Musashi Sushiya completely exceeded my expectations with its exceptional quality and inviting atmosphere. Every roll we ordered was impressively fresh, bursting with vibrant flavors, and incredibly satisfying, with generous portions that left us full and happy. The Rainbow Roll was a visual masterpiece--brightly colored and beautifully layered with slices of pristine, sushi-grade fish that melted in your mouth. The California Roll was perfectly balanced, featuring creamy avocado, sweet imitation crab, and crisp cucumber, tasting far better than your standard version and clearly made with care and high-quality ingredients. The Spicy Tuna roll had just the right amount of heat--bold, flavorful, and not overpowering--packed with fresh, perfectly diced tuna in a spicy mayo sauce. The Mickey Roll stood out as an inventive specialty--deliciously inventive, with a combination of tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, and avocado, wrapped in seaweed and rice, and topped with a drizzle of eel sauce. What truly impressed me was how fast and efficient the chef was, skillfully preparing each roll with precision and care without sacrificing quality. The food was served promptly, looked beautifully arranged, and tasted even better--fresh, flavorful, and expertly crafted. Portions were hearty, making this an incredible value for the top-tier quality you're getting. Honestly, I can't believe how delicious everything was--from the expertly sliced fish to the carefully seasoned rice. This is the kind of sushi spot you'll want to keep returning to--and definitely tell your friends about. If you're anywhere near Lake Forest and craving high-quality sushi, this place is a definite must-visit.

Came here for my grandmas 93rd birthday and was so disappointed. I wish we never came here. It will definitely be the l We had a reservation at 6:30pm and got our dinner is 8pm. They brought the kids meals 20 minutes after everyone else was fed. We constantly were asking for assistance. They did not take any dirty dishes away so we ended up stacking them on another nearby table. Teriyaki steak was so tough we had to send it back. Service was crappy. They do have a lot of options for food, but it isn't worth the frustration and bad experience.

We ended up at Musashi Sushiya after another nearby spot closed at 2pm. The restaurant was completely empty, but service was slow since the waitress seemed overwhelmed with takeout orders and phone calls. It took quite a while just to get water and place our order, even after asking the sushi chef (who was not happy to be asked). We ordered the cucumber salad, shrimp tempura, and soft shell crab to start. The cucumber salad was plain and lacked dressing, the tempura was decent, and the soft shell crab was tasty with a small side salad with sesame dressing that was actually the best part. For mains, we had two bento boxes -- one with chicken teriyaki and baked mussels, and the other with mackerel shioyaki and fried shrimp. The miso soup was solid, but the salad could've used more dressing. Overall, the food was okay, but the poor service really hurt the experience. This was our second visit, and unfortunately, I think it might be our last. It feels like dine-in guests take a back seat to the takeout business here.

Great local sushi spot in lake forest. A big variety of options here to choose from bento plates, rolls and sashimi boats. Overall enjoyed our dining experience. Fairly priced too

Love this place! Been coming here for years and they are always so hospitable. The food is delicious, I've tried almost every roll and haven't had a single one I don't like! Highly recommend.

Really great sushi place for kids or for a date! It's very dark and moody which would make for a good casual date spot but I brought my kids here and they loved their sushi rolls and their kama fish here. The service was amazing and we came around 2:00pm so it wasn't busy and the service was fast. I highly recommend their rolls and their shishito peppers the best peppers I've tried with just a pinch more salt it was perfect. I also recommend their Kama fried fish they cooked it to perfection and super soft! Would definitely come back

Have you reestablished the actual sushi bar, or is it still restaurant sit down?

Nope, they still have it as sit down.

Is there a Happy Hour or AYCE Special?

I'm not sure about Happy Hour, but I know that there is nor AYCE nor and AYCE special.

Is there a copy of the 50% off happy hour menu?

It's in the "menu" section of the pictures here on Yelp, the black and white paper.

Is this AYCE SUSHI? OR false listing as Happy Hour..?

It's not AYCE. The simpler rolls (California, spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, etc) are super cheap though. Averaging about $3 a roll.

Do they still have the 50%off happy hour menu for all day?

    yes they do (:

Are the California rolls gluten free?

    Yes...

I'm really surprised at the low star reviews that I see here. My experience and meal was five star!…read moreThough, keep in mind that my five stars is based on dining here only once and not at peak hours. We arrived just after noon on a weekday. The restaurant wasn't busy and we were seated right away. The vibe inside was authentic feeling Japanese style, smallish with several tables and sushi bar seating. My chicken oyakodon was a bowl of cozy comfort to me. It was topped with two slices of yellow pickled daikon. I'm sure it was homemade daikon, not like what you get in a jar from Tokyo Central. We were served their delicious miso soup as a starter. My sister ordered beef teriyaki and tempura. She said it was good. The restaurant started filling up as we ate our meal. A good sign of good authentic Japanese is when you see a lot of Japanese/Asians filling up the place, especially older people (haha, like me), because you know they know well prepared authentic. And that's the crowd that was coming in. Located in a busy center with limited parking, it must get crazy busy later in the evening because the sign outside the entrance says where to form the line. Anyway, my oyakodon and miso soup was so good!

It's recommended to get 1 portion and order more as you go since it'll be fresh and not soggy. I tried their recommended dipping so as, the beef and the duck. Both of them had amazing flavors that made me keep wanting more! The soba was nice and chewy with the perfect al dente texture, and it paired perfectly well with the dipping sauce. Also tried the shrimp tempura soba and was pleased with the portion they provided. The tempura itself was also nicely coated, not too heavy on the crumbs. The staff there were all very friendly, and helped guide the menu since it was my first time. Amazing service and great food. Definitely a must try if you're in the area!

I don't think many restaurants offers cold soba option so if you never tried it, here is the probably the best place in south OC to give it a shot. This restaurant is located in a large plaza so there are plenty parking. The wait is usually not long at all. I have been here a few times with my family during lunch and dinner and it is never that packed. I think it is located in a pretty secluded area so it is not busy but the food is very good. The decor is simple but clean and has many tables. This most recent visit I ordered the marinated beef hot udon and my daughter ordered the Kakiage cold udon. I didn't know what Kakiage is so the staff kindly educated me that it is a ball of Tempura vegetables. Please don't mix it up with Karaage which is Fried Chicken. They are two different dishes. The broth of my beef udon is deep with umami flavor. The soup base has a legit dashi flavor, not the instant udon flavor. You can tell the difference right away. We also ordered the grill squid. The grill squid is tender and has a unique tastes like the dried squid snacks that I get from the Japanese market. The staff even offered hot water for my daughter's left over dipping sauce. She mixed her dipping sauce with hot water to drink it as a soup. Overall the food is great and we'll definitely be back for more.

Very disappointing experience…read more I want to be clear that I did not get a chance to try the food, so this review is strictly about the customer service and ordering experience. I spent about 25 minutes trying to place a takeout order through their website, but it kept giving me problems and I couldn't get to the payment screen. I called the restaurant, explained the issue politely, and asked if I could simply place the order over the phone. I was told they only accept orders through the website and there was nothing they could do to help. Since I was nearby, I decided to drive to the restaurant and order in person. I explained again that the website wasn't working and that I already knew exactly what I wanted to order. They still refused to take my takeout order and told me they were "first come, first served" and that the employee needed to take care of the customers at the tables. What made this even more frustrating was that this is a very small restaurant with around 10 tables, and only about half of them were occupied. Most of those customers already had food in front of them. At that point, after trying online, calling, and physically driving to the restaurant, I simply left. I understand having an ordering policy, but when your own website isn't working, there should be some reasonable way to help a customer who is actively trying to give you business. Unfortunately, there was zero effort to find a solution. Extremely disappointing experience and customer service.

A little disappointed. I'm usually not one to leave negative reviews, especially for Japanese…read morerestaurants, but I feel like they have potential to do better -- which is why I wanted to leave an honest review. FYI -- no photos because we were busy with a cranky toddler. First, the service was genuinely great. The sweetest lady helped us with the menu and served our food, and we really appreciated her kindness. We were also given complimentary edamame, which was thoughtful, although it was bland, dry, and cold -- almost like it had been sitting in the fridge for a while. Since it was complimentary, we didn't think too much of it. For the mains, we ordered the beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki bento specials. Unfortunately, both proteins were sliced extremely thin. The chicken especially had a jerky-like texture, and both the chicken and beef lacked flavor. After reading other reviews, they had similar experience. The teriyaki sauce itself was also pretty bland. The tempura was okay, but the tempura dipping sauce tasted watered down and lacked the usual savory depth you'd expect. The one standout was the roll topped with salmon and avocado with spicy tuna inside. It was presented beautifully and tasted fresh and well-balanced. Based on this, I honestly think rolls are what they do best. I really hope they improve the preparation and seasoning of the chicken and beef because it was a major turnoff -- and this is coming from someone who eats pretty much everything. It's hard to justify paying around $22 for a bento when the main protein feels flavorless and insubstantial. With so many good Japanese resto in Lake Forest, I would skip this until the proteins are fixed.
