I love that they often host free events (both family friendly and adult oriented) and also things like fitness classes. There are places to take a seat and relax and there are some nice amenities and fun attractions like Shark Girl. There is ample surface lot parking plus there is the Harborfront garage. There is currently an indoor exhibit that is free (and air conditioned) about the history of the Erie Canal. There is also a canal boat, the carousel and the navel park. The one down side is that there seems to be perpetual construction. There are always fences, road blocks and other construction around. Great that development is happening, but it means that it might be a challenge to get around. A great place to enjoy the Buffalo waterfront and spend some time outdoors.

Darien Lakes State Park is not the amusement park. It's the state park and campground less than 15…read moreminutes from the amusement park. If you like the amusement park, and like to camp, and need accommodations, staying here will save you a huge change chunk. We camped here for the first time last summer, mid-August. It was our only kid-free camping trip of the season. The hub'ster and I had concert tickets at Darien Lake Amphitheater (basically in the theme park), and made a getaway out of it by staying here. The proximity to the concert was great. We didn't get sloshed, so drove back and forth to the show, but the desk told us that Ubers are a safe, easy option for transport that campers who are concertgoers use often. Speaking of the front desk, the staff was excellent. Very friendly, offered up useful suggestions without us asking, happily replaced our parking tag when I accidentally ripped the first one. It's nice when customer service staff goes above and beyond to make sure you know what you need to know. We stayed on electric site #22. The site was grassy and pretty level, with good shade. It was a larger site that we could actually wrap around, instead of having to back in. That's always winning in my husband's book. The bathrooms here were kept very clean, probably the cleanest state park bathrooms of all our camp travels so far. The facilities weren't new, but they were well cared for and tidy. Great job facilities crew! The park's amenities include a small lake with fishing and swimming, some sports courts/fields, great nature trails, and pavilion/picnic areas. I believe there is disc golf too. The hubs and I relaxed at the beach, and explored the trails. There was definitely more trail to trek than we had time for, so we're looking forward to getting out there again someday. Both my husband and I enjoyed our camping stay at Darien Lakes State Park very much. We ventured into nearby cute lil' Alden to poke around a bit, relaxed on the site, had a great time at the concert, and didn't miss our kids for a second! In our defense, it was only 3 nights away. Give it 4, and good-mom-miss-my-kids vibes would have probably kicked in. Probably.

PROS: - There is no lifeguard and no swimming allowed, which means it's mostly child-free and thus has a much calmer environment than other area beaches. - I've visited twice (each on a weekday) during COVID and it's been not crowded and easy to socially-distance from the few other folks. - Immaculate bathrooms easily accessible from the beach. - Close, ample, and free parking. CONS: - More rocks than sand. if you're going to relax and watch the water, simply bring a camp chair and that won't matter. The rocks are really pretty, too! - No swimming allowed, so if you're looking to take a dip, head elsewhere. - Very little, if any, shade on the beach itself. Bring an umbrella.

When you enter, there are soccer fields…read more They are used by a local youth soccer organization, so don't be surprised if it's crowded on a weekday evening during soccer season. Overall though, this park sits mostly empty. The property was formally owned by the Wendt family, but the county has not maintained the house, guest house, and stables. They are all Boarded up and painted white. I think in the 60s or 70s a restaurant operated in the main house. People come to this park for the quiet beach access. Between a cut in a hill, you can access the beach. It has twigs and stones scattered about. It's certainly not maintained or swept with a tractor. If there were any recommendation, it would be to sweep this beach with a tractor regularly, I think the park would really generate a lot more visitors. The bathrooms were in great condition and very clean. There is a mural on the exterior bathroom wall. And, this year, the county's bike-hike trail was entered through the park. You could travel to Bennett beach from there by using the trail. There are picnic benches. I was there recently where a small birthday party was held.

When my husband and I were walking, there were a lot of kids playing basketball or little league in the fields. They didn't have a restroom accessible, but they had a porta potty next to the street. No need for maps or worries of getting lost, it's perfect for a nice walk. My son loves looking for all the wildlife especially if there are any ducks or fish. Luckily for him, there are plenty of ducks around here. Another nice thing about this park is that it is very scenic for photography. There were a few different groups there doing what looked like senior pictures or photos before an event. I am amazed at how restful and beautifully maintained it is. The flowers were welcoming, the small waterfall enchanting, the trails curious and winding, and the wildlife amusing. I felt more relaxed and grounded after my visit than I have in a long time. The only negative was that someone was smoking weed on a park bench and the odor instantly turned me off. I'm sure smoking is not allowed, but I was chagrined that in this little section of The Garden of Eden someone would assume to make the place smell like a stoner's living room.
