While I should have known what I wanted in a cut, I applaud the barber for being professional, efficient, and accommodating when helping me style my 90s Kobe Afro into a cool fade. I just moved to Oakland and my hold shop was too far to go to..I didn't have a set barber but Al cut me. There were 2 other barbers there but I wen't with age figuring that experience would help him cut my hair. I have mixed hair and its difficult to get a great cut the first time but I know after a few times the cuts usually get better w/ barbers. I was specific about how to cut my hair cut the curl off but leave it long enough so that I would have waves. I wet my hair prior to coming in so that whoever was cutting my hair would be able to see where the curl ends and to cut. Al dried my hair first, cut a sample in the front and asked me if that was acceptable. I let him know i couldn't tell where it was supposed to be and explained once again that I was looking for the top to be just below the curl but long enough for me to have waves. The fade itself isn't the cleanest.. the length well when he spun me around I told him right away this was waaaay too short. His response was this is what you asked for.. I trust in him to be the professional and give me what I ask for and not make excuses when it isn't. all in all I watched other guys cuts and will try someone else if I go back. but Al will not be cutting my hair. read more

I wasn not impressed, at all. I'm not picky with my hair but I do have curly hair (3c), and that is hard for some barbers to uunderstand.. I don't know the name of the guy that cut my hair, I tried to talk to him, but he really wouldn't talk to me, maybe he was uncomfortable talking to a really really hot girl, LOL. he didn't do what I asked. And my my hair was not even, I brought it to his attention and he said he just couldn't see what I was talking about. But that was easily fix able at home. It was almost like a little mullet on the sides of my hair. Near the nape there were just chunks of longer hair. The one thing that pissed me off was the part that he put in my hair. I asked for a very thin part on the left side. I asked that he use the straight razor so it was more precisely cut, and I thought he would have parted the hair before just going in with the clippers. The part was the last thing that he did. Throughout the cut he gave me the hand mirror to check if I liked how it was going. After he cut the part he was patting my hair, (I should have known something was wrong) At the end he turned the chair and I looked in the big mirror, it looked fine. I got in the car and looked in the mirror, and there was a little puff near the part. Well, it was hair that the barber had patted back into the part to hide the mistake he made. The part is so big, and choppy. He is lucky that I have really thick hair and it grows fast. And it took him 50minues. You get what you pay for. It was $12 hair cut and it shows. It's really dirty in that place, there is dirt caked on the floor, I don't think anyone has ever swept the floors, especially under the waiting chairs. I've been to a lot of barbershops in my life, and this is not the top of the line. read more

Just moved to the East Bay and really wanted to find a real barber and not a stylist. In my YELP search, Hamilton's Barber Shop always came out on top so decided to venture out to International Blvd. Al and the guys were very pleasant and easy to get along. Please do not be intimated by the location and the neighborhood, but do use some common sense and head there during the daytime. Everyone is welcome there so take that leap! Now the haircut itself. Al took care of me and he really knows his stuff. I have coarse hair and it is always tricky finding someone who can handle it. Al was a real pro and understood it right away. His easy demeanor and expertise really showed. Basic haircut is $12 so it is a true value. Looking forward to future visits! read more

Apparently they're not open Monday thru Saturdays 9 to 6. I drove across town to come here with my son and found out they were closed on Mondays and close at 4 on Saturdays. I've come at 430 on a weekday and they turned us away stating that they close at 5. They have numbers they call when a chair is free. However, instead of calling that one number, they call three numbers; so three people are walking to the same chair. I came here after checking out reviews for the many barber shops in Oakland. I recently relocated to the area and lost the world's greatest barber. I came here slightly scared due to the fact that i had a horrible haircut experience within the first week of being here. I walked in and was welcomed by a nice hello from a large group of Barbers (6). I was not recognized as a regular and two barbers stood up and asked if i needed a cut. Don't know why exactly it took me so long to review. I'd been to a lot of different barber shops, and I'm glad that I found this one. Very friendly atmosphere, they are great at asking me exactly what I want (instead of assuming I want something because I'm a woman in the shop - which I've had happen before.) Needed my hairgame to be on point, so I ventured out to Hamilton's to get a shave and a trim. Benjamin took great care to make sure that I look fresh. ( It's about time that fresh came back into our daily vernacular...) My lines were tight and I got a great shave. I like the fact that he takes the time after the cut to clean you up with alcohol to get loose trimmed hair and then the spray to give your hair a nice sheen. I also have a pet peeve about barbers who don't shave/trim your neck after taking the cloth off, but Benjamin had that covered. The overall vibe of the barbershop was loose and friendly. The barbers made sure that you felt like a long time customer. The place was also appropriate for children and ladies as well. Parking was easy, with street parking readily available, and they have a small lot on 61st. This is a place that made you feel like one of the guys, regardless of your race or gender. read more

I have nothing but respect for these guys. They run a clean shop, and were doing a great business. They were friendly and everything was cool. You take a number and have a seat and before long they call the numbers out. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have straight hair and I don't usually keep it super-short. The experience was good, but now that I'm home and looking at it, it's a bit uneven and lumpy. If you have really short hair, or African-American hair, this place will hook you up, no doubt. There were guys in there getting great haircuts. I'll go back again, but I'll be prepared to explain in more detail what I'm looking for in a haircut. read more

Some of the best cuts in Oakland. I've been coming to Hamilton's since I was a kid, always reliable. Basic old school barbershop. Old chairs, old floor... historic. Old school music playing in the background, good conversation. No flatscreen TV's, fish tanks, hoop courts, none of that. Just some magazines and an old soda vending machine (still works; 75 cents). You'll see some comedic figures around the shop and get a good laugh. Black, White, Latino/Hispanic, Indian, Asian, man, woman, kids, everybody is welcome, no hatin'. After my third visit to this barber shop the verdict is in. These Guys are the man! Each time the barber asked me what I wanted and delivered precisely. They stop periodically to check with you to see how they are progressing. In this shop it's all about be careful what you ask for, because that is exactly what you'll get.
