Having thick and straight Asian hair and spent a ton of $$$$$ at highly recommended salons with $150+ per haircut places without much to show, I had given up. I took the advice of a friend and went to a barber instead (my hubby's) and without much ado, Van took good care of me. I walked in with a shoulder length mop. No nonsense, quick and clean textured and layered cut (can't see texture on the pic because I didn't blowdry or put product). Van definitely knows his way around asian hair and how to add texture to it. So Ladies, if you want a good razor cut or texturing and don't mind paying double digits and without the nonsense, you should bring a pic of what you want and let Van do his magic. I asked for a cut and style and got no wash, no product and the cut was so bad I had to go to Great Clips Rockridge to fix it. It was bad to the point of questioning if this person was even licensed. VAN IS THE MAN! Skin fade, trim the top is my go-to style. Van always does it well. He's fast and efficient, and he gives a nice tight haircut. Van at Top Cut is one of the only shops that not only still takes walk-ins but also its good value. Every other barber shop is appointment only and charging $50+ for a cut. I don't need the barber with the sleeve tats, I don't need the whiskey and fancy pomade. I just want to straight forward quick cut. Van delivers every time. Also, bring cash! read more

I've cut my hair four times since the pandemic started. I thought I did a "passable" job on my high skin fade. At least on the sides. For the top, I'm just chopping away as if I have two left hands. And for the back, I'm literally guessing and praying. Through the low-quality Zoom pixels, no one's going to care. That is, until I finally butchered it so badly that my colleagues actually noticed it on Zoom. OK. Right. That's the end of my self-hair-cutting run. Salons were recently given the go-ahead to accept customers indoors. Decided to try out Top Cut. I think I've found my new go-to! Van cut my hair. I asked for a high skin fade. No problem. The cut turned out clean and right on point. He was not only skilled and proficient, but a friendly guy to talk to, too! It's not easy to find a solid barbershop/salon that can comfortable execute a skin fade. Very happy to find this gem in my neighborhood. Price is a substantially higher than at my former barbershop in SF. But happy to support this business, and will continue doing so. They clearly have a lot of long-time, happy customers, as every now and then one would stop by to shout hello and welcome back. In terms of COVID-19 precautions, they were solid. Socially-distanced seats. Everyone work masks. Hand sanitizer at the front of the store. read more

I'm frankly disappointed in my haircut. I showed Sue a photo of a haircut I used to have that I wanted to emulate: a full comb-over with shaved sides. I also specified that I wanted my comb over to come down to my left ear, creating a more asymmetrical look. Lastly, I wanted to establish a clean line between my comb over and the shaved side. I don't know whether she misunderstood or didn't care, but she proceeded to give me a more traditional comb over, cutting my hair an inch shorter than I wanted (which she then said she would "blend", which I was forced to accept because she had already cut off too much as it was). She didn't establish a clean line. And she kept commenting how I had too much hair. Maybe she is better at providing more traditional, conservative cuts for men, but my experience felt haphazard and rushed. Not worth the $32 I paid. Suffice it to say I'll be looking for a different barber. read more

A friend of mine was in need of a nice haircut to prepare himself for an upcoming professional election. He had been cutting his own hair for as long as he can remember-- seriously, no exaggeration. However, he figured for such an important professional event, he deserved/needed a fitting professional hair cut. Having little to no experience in salons/barbershops, he got me and another girl friend to accompany and help him. I'm so glad that we went to witness the transformation. Watching my friend go from before to after provoked the same emotions as 6 year old me had when I saw cinderella go through a sparkly swirl and end up wearing the baddest dress & shoes in town. I guess what I'm basically saying is that Van is your fairy godmother (er, godfather) reincarnated. You got a fancy place to be? Need to look fly? Then come to Top Cut Barber Salon. The end. And a happy ending too. My friend looked so unbelievably and almost unrecognizably handsome when Van was done. I have a feeling Van does this kind of work on the regular though. Uhhh so I went here because I needed a quick, inexpensive haircut and saw this place had pretty good reviews. To be fair, Marty wasn't there when we went and most of the good reviews are for him specifically. My haircut was ok, nothing special, but it ended up being $25 (before tip) instead of the $16 advertised price??? Very disappointing. Also the seats for customers waiting are RIGHT behind the salon seats so there is no privacy whatsoever when getting your hair cut. I won't be back. Moved to Oakland recently, it was time for a beard trim and a haircut, decided to try out Top Cut. Called to find out they didn't take appointments, so ended up walking in during lunch time - got seated right away, great! The haircut was swift with efficient conversation. :) Made me a little worried about my beard-trim but Van took his time and paid extra attention to get things right. Both the haircut and beard trim lacked the structural approach I had become accustomed to, but I am definitely happy with the outcome. I really like this barbershop located in the Piedmont neighborhood of Oakland. When I first moved up from LA, I had a hard time finding someone who paid attention to the details. My hair grows out curly, and thick, so I prefer to sport a tight fade on the sides with minimal length up top. I tried many shops and found this place about a year ago and a half ago. Sue is comparable in her talent and attention to detail like my old barber in Santa Monica. I highly recommend calling in on weekends to inquire about waiting- can get busy. If you can, ask to have Sue cut your hair. She does an awesome job, and that matters to someone like me concerned with appearance. Man am I glad I gave this place a shot. Great experience, low-key, prices are on point. Generally speaking, I frequent Slick and Dapper or the Alley Barbershop. But they are often, very often booked for days (and in the case of the Alley Barbershop, they have jacked their prices up sooooo high that going just feels like a ridiculous waste of money. After putting off a haircut for weeks, I stumbled here and Marty (I believe is the owner) took me as a walk-in. Awesome music playing in the background, lots of funk and R&B. Many tunes from the 70s/80s. I really enjoyed the music. Marty was even rocking a swanky tie-dye button up made out of what I'm guessing was silk. The unique and odd combination of attire, music, and overall ambience was a wonderful melting pot of swag. It was a trip. An awesome trip! I enjoyed the clean fade on the sides with an electric razor, and a scissor trim on the top. The haircut took a while, but it was certainly well worth it. So many barbers mess up fades. Top Cut is another local East Bay barber that is the master of customer service. Note they prefer cash payments but will accept credit with a fee. Call for an appointment to test their business but you're pretty safe to go as a walk in. The cut is precise, short and sweet.
