While in Denver, tourists look for unique opportunities to make their trip memorable. Nothing brings the family closer together than good old fashioned candy! Sweets have a universal appeal that transcends all age groups because after all, many of us have a sweet tooth! Therefore, we chose to visit Hammond's Candy Factory to view the candy making process for ourselves. Hammond's is located in an industrial part of Denver and is easy to pass up. It is off of interstate 25 with the nearest cross streets being 58th Street and Washington Avenue. However when driving down Washington Ave, you won't see the building from the street. There's a small street that runs through the industrial complex and you'll find Hammond's in the back of the lot. Look to your right and you'll see Santa on top of the building awaiting your arrival. The factory is large and has a no frills exterior but it's all about the magic that happens inside! We booked a free tour that would last approximately 20 - 30 minutes. You'll check in at the front desk and then your tour will begin with a short viewing of a video in the media room. With Hammond's being in business for approximately 90 years, it was interesting to hear about how they became so big! After a brief overview of the company's history, it's time to observe the production for yourself. Your guide will take you into the heart of the company and you'll learn about the meticulous details that go into making each piece of candy meet their strict guidelines. Their staff is trained for a minimum of 6 months and you can tell that Hammond's invests a lot into the quality of their workmanship. Candies that are broken or not formed at the correct angle are tossed in an "oops bag" and will not be sold. Many of those "oops candies" are given away to guests at the end of the tour. This is a no nonsense business in which everyone works as a team. At the end of your tour, you'll receive your freebie and then it's time to enter the candy shop! This is where it becomes interesting! The candy canes seem larger and thicker than what people may be used to. They are about 10 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Some even have a creme filling! Flavors that they have are: birthday cake, strawberry, hot chocolate, pralines, and peanut butter. I'm sure peppermint is here too but if you're visiting Hammond's, you should purchase something that you won't find in your hometown. Hammond's also has chocolate candies in their display case. They have pieces of fudge that are precut into squares. When purchased, they are neatly packed into a plastic container. Assorted chocolates are also featured in the display case. Almonds seem to be the most popular nuts in most candies. Now some may be wondering if their candy is actually that great. Honestly, their candy is very good and worth every penny! It is a tad bit pricey but it's money well-spent. You don't have to take part in the factory tour when you come here but it's an added bonus since it's free. What a fun tour! Tours are free and every half hour. You'll start by watching a 10 minute video on the history of the creator and company and then get to watch the assembly line and what they're making that day. We got to watch candy canes get flavored and made, as well as hot chocolate dipping sticks get packaged. At the end you'll be let out into the store, which has a selection of Hammond's products along with other treats and gifts. My boyfriend and I attempted to show some restraint, but come on! How can you show restraint in places like that? They sell mystery bags for $3 or $5 where you'll get a random assortment of Hammond's candies (and bags will have a note if they include nuts). We got the $5 bag which included: toffee peanuts, a strawberry candy cane, sour grape lollipop, and Valentine's Day gummies. Not sure why Hammond's Candies sent their rudest people to represent their brand at one of the most prestigious food events in the world. I attended the Fancy Food Show in New York City last week. I was shocked to discover that they sent the worst people to represent their brand. This post is not to disparage the taste quality of the brand. The products are very good. This is just what this mama needed during Covid. I was so mentally drained from being stuck inside. So we went first thing on a Monday morning and the tour guide was the sweetest and showed so much excitement through it all. Love this place!! Candy galore! They provide FREE tours (approximately 30 mins each). If you want to see the candy making process in action do come during the Weekdays, Mondays thru Fridays. Time from 09:00hrs thru 15:00hrs. I was fortunate enough to go here with Hubs and my cousin who came to Colorado from Singapore for a visit. Wednesday July 29th 2009, we were there for the 11am FREE tour session. We register at the Candy merchandise and were given a sticker to indicate the time for tour we are going. While waiting, for our turn to go for the FREE tour, we browsed at the candy merchandise area. At least about 1 minute before 11am, we were request to enter the "video" room so we can watch the video presentation about Hammond's Candies Factory. We are allowed to take pictures of the different candy making process via the huge window/glass panels just outside the video room. The staff will answer any questions about Hammond's while you were there. All in all I like to go for such tour to get more information about how the candy is being made. We decided to take the tour last minute and we were told to come on down and try our luck. When we arrived on a Saturday morning we assumed we'd be turned away but we were pleasantly surprised that they were able to take us on the first tour of the day. The tour started with a short video and then a walk down to the glass window where you can watch the workers mix candy. They tell you facts about how the candy is made and interesting information about Hammond's. The entire thing is only 30 minutes - and they give you a piece of candy at the end. I'd say it's fun and worth the stop for families with kids of all ages. At the end of the tour you end up in the candy shop (of course!) where you can buy "oops" bags of candy or individual pieces - which are discounted. I thought this was super cool and a great way to try a larger variety of candies. We really enjoyed it and spent about an hour overall. Plenty of parking in their private lot and clean restrooms. Free 30 minute tour, which was a video plus big windows on two sections of the factory with a guide to explain things. It wasn't the best factory tour I have had, but it's perfect for kids (who are all about the candy anyway). My mom and dad were in town and they love candy! Who doesn't? We signed up a few days ago for the 2:00 factory "tour." We were super pumped! We got there about 5 minutes before the "tour" started. While it's off the beaten path, parking is ample and the building is super cool as you're greeted by Santa Claus climbing the side of the building. We went inside to start the "tour." We were given our delicious tickets, which were mini red velvet candy bars. Great start. Then the "tour" kicked off. I am putting tour in quotes because it was basically a 15 minute video (which was admittedly moderately interesting) followed by a lady who knew some things, but honestly didn't seem to know much, talk, while the candy makers essentially mopped and wiped down tables through the viewing window for another 15 minutes. Luckily their candy is both unique and delicious. We bought pretty much every candy bar they have to offer and did a tasting later in the evening. Peanut Butter and Jelly was the resounding favorite. We also bought some stuff from behind the counter. All good! $50 later we walked out of the store. I have a 6 year old and 2 year old. I look for new things to do outside the normal zoo/park rotation. This was not a winner for these ages. I think it might be fun for like older kids and maybe retirees. The tour starts with a video and lots talking. They pass out a free broken candy cane and then ask you not to eat it in the property. This is the part that killed it for us. My kids sat through the tour and then were given a candy and weren't allowed to eat it. We ended up sitting in an area that looked like where employees smoked (although very clean), no seats, so my kids would calm down enough to let me shop for a few store items. I am pretty sure my kids would have liked a brewery tour more if they got to sit and eat at the end. I thought it would be like a cafe and we could get some snacks, it's not what they are going for. It is a very industrial area, so my ideas of a dessert cafe are silly, but either way I was disappointed in the experience. read more

You really can't see much as your looking through a window at the entire operation. You are not really touring or walking through the candy making area. Much of what goes on cannot be seen very well as it is in the back of the workroom or out of site completely from the viewing area. Or the areas are blocked and all you see are the workers head and neck area. The narration by the guide is over a microphone and is hard to understand. She frequently directed us to look at a screen above the viewing window. Then was surprised when the camera wasn't working in one area. Also, younger children, around 2-4 really can't see much unless you hold them and then all they see is the area right in front of the windows. Most of which means nothing to them. Furthermore, the staff are not very friendly and very unprofessional. A free broken candy cane is given to every guest. I would not recommend this for children under 8-10. read more

Something we all grew up with. I'm this case, I was gifted Hammond Candies from my birthday. I would have taken a picture but I really don't think y'all want to see an empty wrapper at this point. So, what's awesome though, they are a local company so it's definitely worth buying into because we are also supporting a local business (but also have seen nationally). Definitely loved the taffy sticks (especially the blue berry ones). Next time, I'll get pics before destroying them. Today was our second time visiting the factory and doing the tour, and we only did the repeat experience because we now have a toddler who appreciates these kinds of things. Plus, we love factory tours. Safety procedures were in place and there weren't that many people in the store or on our tour, so the whole thing felt OK. The candy shop has every kind of sweet imaginable and we also appreciated their sale section--yes, we *will* purchase your adorable dreidel cards, thank you very much. Our daughter was pretty well behaved here all things considered (we negotiated with her beforehand that she could pick out four items but only eat two pieces, which was a shockingly effective strategy). The tour is a 10 minute movie and then you get to look through the windows into the candy making operations and followed by the packaging operations. It's pretty astounding that this place is still doing everything by hand after 100 years. The staff is nice and it's always fun to have candy now and again. It's more off the beaten path as a Denver "to do" but we've enjoyed ourselves both times. read more

Booked a tour online, was pushed back an hour because their system over-booked, and then toured an empty facility - not fun. We heard from our cashier at King Soopers that Hammon's has free tours and we were so excited to bring the kids and surprise them. We booked a tour to Hammond's on their online website for 2:00pm today. When we arrived the front desk attendant was flustered and said that the online site overbooked and we would have to wait until 2:30pm for your tour, which was disappointing. We then toured the candy store there and bought some candy. Once the tour started at 230pm, we all watched a video and then went to the rest of the tour where they show the candy being made. Except NO ONE WAS MAKING CANDY. No one was doing andy candy making for the whole half hour! The announcer kept apologizing and all the kids are crying. After the tour, I spoke to the woman at the front desk and asked why they were giving tours of nothing happenings. She said the workers were let home early, and they didn't control that. I asked again why they would be giving tours if no one was there, because they absolutely could have warned people ahead of time or not booked tours. She shrugged her shoulders and said nothing could be done. We would have never driven all the way here and waiting a half hour for the tour if we had been notified ahead of time. Save your money and a headache by just buying their candy in a store. read more

Last trip we were there we toured the facility, got to see them making their famous candy canes, ribbon candy, and their famous hot cocoa spoons. This place made me so happy! I have told everyone I could about it- it was such a fun surprise and experience! They offer free tours and the tours are really great- there's a really cute and informative video that you all watch together first, and then you walk through looking through windows into the different kitchens. It was so cool and interesting seeing handmade candy being made and the popcorn kitchen people were especially fun- they waved to us and even danced! The tour guide was friendly and fun too. At the end we got a free lollipop that was either a mistake or broken, but still good, and you end in the big magical candy store that has SO many choices! We spent over $90 because we wanted to try everything. My favorites so far are the strawberry marshmallows, the tiny striped peppermint candies, and the unique flavors of chocolate bars! We will totally bring people visiting back with us and we'll try to go on a weekday next time to see more candy being made than on a weekend. We visited here for a free tour with our son, which was a lot of fun for all of us. We watched a short video about candy making, which is actually more interesting than it sounds, and we received a tour of the factory. The candy-makers' skills were impressive to watch! On the way out we were handed a broken candy cane as a treat. I appreciate their desire to avoid wasting food, but a broken candy cane was a disappointment to a 5-year-old who looked at it in dismay. We were led into the factory store, which is full of handmade candies, chocolates, toys, and much more. It's impossible to leave without a bag full of goodies. The staff are very friendly and kind. They stop doing tours 2 hours before the store closes so we missed the tour which we were looking forward to but that's ok. The tour is free & I was told it's about 15 minutes long, so check the schedule and get there early if you would like to do the tour. A couple of times a year they have a big sale, right now they have a sale running until June 9th. The store is giant and has so many choices to choose from! There are large candy canes in about 25 different flavors. They sell every flavor of their chocolate bars. They even have an entire wall of candy including jelly bellies that is $12.50/lb. Some cute gift ideas like hot chocolate stirring spoons, T-shirt's, magnets & more. I bought one piece of candy from the fudge/deli style area and it was very good, it was a dark chocolate cluster with pecans in it. One piece was just the right amount! read more

We briefly stopped here before heading off to visit a couple other nearby places. Unlike some other tours, we had no problem getting on the tour despite arriving two minutes before it began. The tour began with an interesting, informative video. The tour was fairly simple but offered a good view of the factory and the candy being made. For what couldn't be seen, they had tv screens which streamed camera views of the different parts of the factory. The cameras didn't always show a good view of the factory, but it still seemed like a neat concept. At the end of the tour, we received free taffy and spent some time in the gift shop searching for deals.
