Came here for some late night tofu soup and it was great! While everyone else was closed on a Monday night, I was so glad they were open so I could get my craving satisfied. Tried the seafood pancake which could have been crispier but there was big chicks of squid and other morsels of seafood in it which I loved. Our other entrees including seafood tofu soup and stone bowl have all been delicious. I love the array of complimentary side dishes and they aren't stingy about refilling them. I have visited this place plenty of times and the food is always great! When you enter you can sit in the front of the restaurant where they will prepare your meal in the kitchen or you can request to sit in the back and have your meal cooked by the server on the grill. We always sit in the back at the table with the grills. The restaurant is always clean but the service can be a bit slow, there are ringers on the table when you need something. Every time we visit the food is always good. This visit we had the All You Can Eat $39.99 per person and it was way more than enough and well worth the price. The only issue I had was that the server added her tip to the meal, I cannot recall if that has ever happened before and after going through the menu it states that parties of 5 are charged a 20% service fee, we were a party of 2. Too bad for her because we tip very generously and she really missed out. So be on the lookout on your receipt. The food here was incredible. The portions are fairly large, as my boyfriend and I each got an entree and a seafood scallion pancake to share and we had plenty of leftovers. They even brought out a complimentary Sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch) for dessert which was a wonderful surprise addition to our meal. My friend brought me here for dinner tonight after claiming it was his FAVORITE Korean place in all Atlanta and he's been here almost weekly since May. There menu is extensive! We were seated promptly and this location had a contactless menu. The restaurant was pretty busy with ample seating. The restaurant looked to be separated into a kbbq section and a 'normal' section. We sat in the 'normal' section and received all their banchan. Their banchan included: - Pickled Cucumber - Bean Sprouts - Fish Cakes (Our favorite) - Seaweed - Pickled Radish - Potato We ordered the Samgyeopsal Kimchi Mandu Jeongol ($32.99) and the Japchae ($13.99). We were soooo fooled by the Samgyeopsal Kimchi Mandu Jeongol thinking it was just enough for two people and it was soooo much. You definitely need 3-4 people to finish it off!!! It has a good bit spice but not TOO spicy. It might be a bit spicy if you cannot handle any heat. The Japchae was really yummy as well! I would most certainly get that again and it was also a hefty portion! Service here is great with a little push button on the table to call your waitress. Two years ago, the food here was unappetizing. I decided to give it a try during the pandemic and whoa, has it drastically changed! I don't know if they modified their recipes or hired a new chef, but this is one of my go-to Korean restaurants now. The Kimchi Jjigae has too much cabbage in it and not enough broth, but tastes great regardless. For fish lovers who can handle heat, I highly recommend the Daegu Maeuntang. However today, three of my coworkers got lunch boxes and they left out all of their rice so we had to make a second trip back to pick up. They've left out rice before but it's been a few months. Always check your takeout orders! I usually get yukgehjang, my fav, but I've been craving noodles and just noticed that they have some Chinese options on their menu now so I gave the seafood noodle soup a try, mainly for the scorched rice that comes with it. The noodles were perfectly cooked and came in a very convenient take out bowl. The broth was spicy and they are very generous with the amount of seafood in the soup. Han Il Kwan in my opinion is super underrated and it's been an established restaurant for quite some time now. Ever since I moved to the Dunwoody area, I've been eating here for quite a bit and I also order via UberEATS quite often. I would compare this restaurant to maybe Jang Su Jang or Seorabeol in Duluth, but it's usually not as busy, and the guests have been more foreign here. I always order the Chadol jjamppong -- it's honestly some of the best jjamppong in ATL. The brisket that's added in has a smoky taste and the portions are really big too. I haven't really tried other menus but I have heard that the kimchi jjigae is very good as well. I'm taking a star off because my most recent visit didn't have the best service, but Han Il Kwan is as Korean as it could get in Doraville. read more

I have been meaning to write a review even though my experience was a couple months ago (though I have been coming here for ages since it is a very long-running restaurant). I honestly don't understand why people rave about this place... maybe because they still use charcoal. Who cares. That doesn't make up for the lack of service. I went there about an hour before closing. I am very aware of how it is frowned upon to go to a restaurant right before closing; however I thought an hour was decently acceptable. I also came with a large party, which I thought was a good thing. Apparently the staff didn't think so. I am Korean myself and I know how Korean ajummas are; I understand their humor and how they act when they are displeased in general. Well this night, they were very rude and it was obvious they just wanted us to get out. They pressured us to order all the expensive stuff. Because I was with out of town guests, I obliged thinking "at least the food is good." It wasn't. The meat was undercooked and the workers didn't care. They didn't refill any of our waters or give us any service other than telling us without telling us to GTFO. Then it was about a million dollars for probably the worst service (again, I'm Korean and know that our idea of 'service' is different from American service) but even for Koreans, it was horrible. Because I was with guests, I didn't say anything for the sake of saving some drama. Anyways, I never leave reviews but this really stuck out in my mind that I had to come back and say something. Just because a place is long-running and stays authentic doesn't mean it's okay to treat customers like that. If you're going to treat customers like you're still in Korea, then don't charge an arm and a leg. read more

This was the biggest rip off for the worst BBQ and even more terrible service. Paid more money here than at 5 star beach front restaurants or 5 star steak houses, and got the worst food and service. The place was dirty, old, disorganized, and the staff do what they want to do regardless of what you ask. I asked the waitress for a knife for us to use with the ribs. They only gave us chopsticks. The waitress told us that tongs were better. Who is she to tell us that we should use tongs, and not knives with our ribs. This place was great! We went for lunch one weekday and had a great experience. It has the feel of a real Korean tofu house, even with the button to get service. I got the chicken lunch box and she got the tofu soup. Both were delicious, especially the chicken that came in the lunch box. The service was amazing to be frank. Everyone was friendly and helpful. My go to for Korean food is usually So Kong Dong down the street but I honestly have to say that Han IL Kwan is winning my heart. They're menu is diverse - they have some Chinese options as well. On my most recent visit I ordered a mild tofu soup with beef and it was delicious! We also ordered the medium seafood pancake and it was amazing! I really liked that it wasn't overly greasy. My bf ordered his usual dish - bibimbop. The dish was HUGE and very good! He almost couldn't finish. The service is awesome and the staff is very friendly. Great food, wonderful service. We we're a little skeptical when we pulled into the parking lot. The outside sign is a little beaten up, restaurant looked a bit deserted. We we're worried that we had gone to the wrong place or that it had closed down. However, as soon as we stepped it, the vibe was totally different. The interior is quite homey, but still very spacious. We we're seated by a very cute older lady. My boyfriend and I both ordered bibimbaps, and with korean seafood pancake to share. The seafood pancake was fantastic, banchans were also great. The star of the show is the bibimbap. This is THE BEST bibimbap I've ever had (and if u look my recent review, I have had A LOT). I love that the bowl they serve it in is flat, kind of like a big plate. This provides more service area for the rice to get crispy. There are also soooo many vegetables toppings. More than any other restaurant I've been to. The ladies who run this place are super attentive, every time I needed help someone would run over before I even raised my hand. My parents live in Brookhaven and while we were down here I wanted gopchang jeongol and found out this is the only place so we ordered togo. IT WAS REALLLLY GOOD! It's shocking that the waiter checked our receipts and gave us a rolling eye, shook her head before we left and forced us giving them at least 18% tips impolitely! I went to Han Il Kwan last night for the latest Buford Highway UYE (http://www.yelp.com/events/doraville-buford-highway-uye-han-il-kwan). Han Il Kwan is an old Korean standby restaurant that has been on Buford Highway for years. It's located on Buford Highway just inside I-285. Despite the immediate surrounding area and tall, weathered sign outside, the restaurant was nicer than I expected inside. It's bright, clean, and the furniture isn't worn-out like some other Korean establishments on Buford Highway. There's a Korean BBQ section, regular dining area, and semi-private rooms. The main dining area even has a huge TV mounted to the wall. Sparse decor such as floral arrangements, artwork, and a chandelier make the space more inviting. When dining at Han Il Kwan, you first have to decide where you want to sit based on what you want to eat. If you want Korean BBQ, you'll be seated in the back with the tables that have built-in grills so you can cook the meat yourself. If you want to order off the "traditional" Korean menu, you'll be seated at a regular table. You *can* order Korean BBQ while sitting at a regular table, though it's highly recommended more than just one person order BBQ. They do have portable grills they can set up at your table for smaller BBQ orders. Han Il Kwan has arguably the best menu of Korean food on Buford Highway. Whereas other Korean eateries on BuHi may focus on value (So Kong Dong, Go Hyang House) or a special type of food such as tofu soup (Cho Dang Tofu House), Han Il Kwan doesn't hold back. It has a more robust menu like a place you'd find in Duluth, the mecca of Korean cuisine in metro Atlanta. Like nearby Hae Woon Dae and maybe even Cho Sun Ok, Han Il Kwan feels a bit pricey. You do have to pay a premium for good Korean food (meat) and I thought the quality of the BBQ was very good. Expect to spend about $20+ per order of Korean BBQ, which is good for 2-3 people. They have 10 different types including harder-to-find ox tongue, spicy pork (bulgogi), and chicken. They also have hot pot (~$35 for two). The traditional dinner menu has noodles, soups/stews, and rice dishes like bibimbap (Korean mixed rice). Most of these entrees are about $10-15 each. There's a lunch menu with some of the same items at reduced prices. We each ordered different items and everything looked appetizing (noodle soups, tofu soups, stone bowl rice, etc.). Here's what I tried: Banchan (small side dishes): Kimchi Pickled bean sprouts Cucumbers and carrots wrapped in daikon Baby bok choy with brown sauce Potatoes Potato salad Tempura zucchini Appetizers: Hae Mul Pa Jun - Korean seafood pancake Jjin Man Doo - steamed pork and vegetable dumpling Entree: Gal Bi + Naeng Myun - marinated BBQ short ribs + cold buckwheat noodle soup I would've liked to sample more dishes, but was stuffed with the above. Han Il Kwan's banchan selection was OK at best. Banchan offerings differ between each Korean restaurant. Everything seemed fresh enough. I was disappointed there were no anchovies. The cucumbers and carrots wrapped in daikon was one I'd never seen before. Kimchi was sufficiently spicy. Tempura zucchini wasn't very good - cold and bland. Seafood pancake was presented nicely (as was Kristin B's bibimbap), both served still sizzling on an iron skillet (bowl). The pre-sliced pancake was thick and included ingredients such as shrimp, squid, sliced bell pepper, and jalapeno. The steamed pork and vegetable dumplings were savory. Both the apps went great with the provided (salty) dipping sauce that had scallions and sesame seeds. The gal bi (short ribs) was excellent. Unless you don't eat meat (or beef), I don't see how anyone cannot like this dish. I highly recommend it. The meat is marinated well, has great flavor, and is very soft and tender. It's a little bit fatty/greasy, but that's what makes it so delicious. I also thought the portion size was generous considering I had the gal bi paired with the naeng myun (buckwheat noodle soup). The naeng myun was decent. This is a cold noodle soup (popular in the summer) served in a large metal bowl. It's so cold that it's served with chunks of ice floating in the broth. The broth was thin and light and the noodles were very chewy, as they're supposed to be. Other ingredients included slices of beef and various root vegetables. Overall, I thought it was a decent bowl of naeng myun noodle soup. (Note: Naeng myun can also be ordered "dry" without broth and instead mixed together in a bowl with a special paste.) For an ordinary Monday night, the restaurant was busy. Our small group was seated in a semi-private room. Service was very good, polite. Like other Korean restaurants, each table has a button you can press whenever you want a server's attention. It's practical and convenient. Each time we pressed the button, a server was at our table within a minute or two. Open until 1am, 7 days a week! 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. read more
