The pork belly rice bowl was 5/5 - I will be back just for that dish. Lots of meat, very flavorful. Good for sharing or as a main course. However, for a place that specializes in ramen, the noodle soup bowls I've tried so far sit at a 4/5 for my friends and I. The broth is nourishing but a bit thinner than we expect. The shoyu is my go-to. It's a standard offering at a ramen place, and this one is in-line with other eateries - doesn't blow me away, nothing that I can point to that makes it unique and special here, but that is okay. Prices are a touch high for the quality and size. I've had some of their smaller appies like the Musubi and buns - not a must try, but I do typically suggest ordering dishes that aren't as easy to find on a menu (as opposed to edamame, as an example). Appies can range from 3-4/5. The interior is cute, the ambiance is laid back and casual, and you should expect a bit of a wait during peak dining hours. Plenty of free parking on the premises. It's a benefit to me to get seated quickly and due to the nature of what ramen is (pre-coooked soup and freshly prepared noodles), it's fast and you can get in and out within 30 minutes of seating to paying. Maybe because it's in Manhattan Village and is niche Japanese Soup Noodles that it's possibly not as popular for the area. It's a great place to eat. Their broth and ramen are really good. I love the creamy richness of the Classic broth. Ramen noodle texture and toppings are always on point, and their pork belly cha siu is always a thick and tender serving. Combos are a good deal. However, service continues to be lacking regardless of whether you are dining in or picking up. I usually dine in and they always feel understaffed with tables un-bussed and taking a bit longer to get seated or orders taken than you'd expect. My recent visit was to pick up an online order. Estimated wait time was about 30 minutes, however, I had to stand there for another 25 minutes while waiting with all the other pick up customers and Doordashers. It still took 10 minutes for them to bring out my order after I received the order ready message. The restaurant was full when I got there, but most customers had left by the time I received my food. I did see the 3 servers hustling and food came out of the kitchen at a good pace, so not sure what the problem is. First time experience at SilveLake Ramen was.... interesting, to say the least. An unusual rainy evening called for ramen with hot broth. We had always wanted to try SilverLake Ramen, when the weather and time was right. Oddly, upon arriving at the restaurant, we could not log into their portal via the QR code; and an error message appeared on the phone. At the front counter, we were informed that unfortunately they had run out of Pork, so we could only place orders with Chicken or Tofu. (A good indicator that they prepare the pork daily, meaning fresh...) While waiting to be seated, we could not log on, via their App. The basic Shoyu was very good, hot and flavorful, with a good balance of broth, bamboo shoots, green onions, seasoned egg and noodles. The Garlic Truffle Ramen was also hot, flavorful and tasty. After paying the bill, the waiter stated he would be unable to apply our payment to our account, even after we finally set up our account. This was very surprising, and honestly, actually frustrating. This small ask seemed a simple enough request, especially since other restaurants have accommodated similar requests, if needed. Unfortunately, No other option or solution was offered. So, I asked for assistance from another staff member. Fortunately, at that moment, the Star employee of the evening appeared, Fon. She assured us that she could add our payment to our account, but also explained their Internet service in the restaurant was poor. Since we finished dining, I asked Fon if it was OK to step outside and finalize setting up our account, then come back to ask her to add our bill to our account, and she agreed to help us. Fortunately, we set up our account, and because Fon was very busy, we patiently waited for her at the front counter. When available, Fon quickly and easily added our bill to our now set up account. We really appreciate Fon for her excellent service, and great customer relations. It's always great to have a satisfying and filling meal, however sometimes when someone provides that extra effort to accommodate a request, that actually becomes a highlight of the evening. THAT great effort alone is the incentive to come back to SilverLake Ramen, at another time. Without Fon's ability to accommodate our request, the small disappointment may have discouraged us from returning again, ever. The Baseline: For a ramen restaurant the noodles must be fresh, cooked with consistency in firmness, broth must be tasty with good body, accompaniment additions must match with the style, and the plating must work for the ramen presentation/function. Food: The ramen here is really the thing to come for. Tonight I opted on the Chicken Karaage Curry Rice Bowl which was good with a spice level that was enjoyable, but there was no pickled ginger condiment to be added. I had to order a side of pickled onion ($1.75) so I had something to cut the fat of the curry base. All curry dishes need a pickled condiment option. The Classic Tonkotsu Ramen was great as always with good noodle pull and tasty broth and ordered as a combo with a Chicken Karaage appetizer that has a nice mayo based dipping sauce. Very enjoyable. The Rice Pork Bowl was also very good and was a good option for a smaller appetite with a great price ($8.75 for a small). I also had the Spicy Garlic Edamame which was addictive. Love the Edamame! Service: Efficient service in taking my order and serving the food. Everything was accurate.
