The Rainbow Lookout met all our needs and had everything we needed in the kitchen, plenty of towels for bath and beach, beach chairs, ice chest, and extra scuba equipment. We could walk down the private road to catch the sunrise; we drank our coffee In the hottub and we swam in the very nice lagoon style pool every single day. When we return to Maui we will definitely come back. We loved the home and surrounding areas and enjoyed the natural setting as well. If you don't like nature and want to be pampered by hotel staff then don't come here. If you don't mind seeing a gecko scramble across the rocks, then you'll be ok here. If you want to see what it's like to actually live like a Maui denizen then this is the place for you. Sharon could not have been more responsive and accommodating. Huelo is located on Maui's rugged north shore, 20 minutes east of the small town of Paia on the…read moreroad to Hana. Since you're 20 minutes' drive from the nearest town, this place is super-secluded, but offers all of the amenities you could imagine. The road down to the place is only partially paved (last time we were there in 2003, anyway,) and so you have a very slow, bumpy ride down. We first did it in some kind of crapmobile rental, and whenever we tried to take the road too quickly, residents along the way come out and give you the stink-eye. Not worth busting your axle anyway, so take it slow. Huelo Point Lookout is just about the last place, down the last driveway on the last road as you make your way off the Hana Highway and down toward the coast. Some of the cottages on the property offer ocean views (the main house, for example,) but for the most part the coast is hidden from view, so if you're looking for beach front, this is not for you. What we loved about Huelo is that it's much more of a rapidly changing environment than getting a cookie-cutter chain hotel place in Wailea, Kaanapali or in Kapalua. It's a more rugged and unexpected experience with lots of wind, quick, fleeting rainstorms and amazing tranquility and seclusion. No kids in the communal pool yelling all day, no one next door making noise. You literally feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Both times we have stayed there, we opted for the Haleakala Cottage, which is basically a studio apartment (free standing, no immediate neighbors) with a full kitchen, patio, its own Jacuzzi and the best part: a FANtastic outdoor shower. The small office, with 2 sets of washers and dryers plus all the linens you could ever need (including fabulous, huge beach towels) is just around the corner from this cottage, and me being a laundry freak, I was in heaven (guests have free access to the laundry facilities anytime.) Owners Jeff and Sharyn Stone and their sweet son, Kai, have gone out of their way to provide their guests with privacy and seclusion, without being so absent that you don't feel well taken care of. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of fresh, whole-bean coffee, and you can also order special treats like additional flowers or chocolates for your arrival (my husband surprised me with this on our honeymoon.) In all, I think we've spent a total of almost 3 weeks here over our two trips to Hawaii, and I would stay there again in a snap. The only perceived drawback might be the distance from the place to the nearest sign of civilization, but keep in mind that Maui is only so big, so any place, including Hana or even Wailea on the southern west coast is only 40-60 minutes drive away. And when you're in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, on vacation, what do you have more of than leisure time? Recommendations: - Take your watches off when you arrive and put them away someplace. Go with the light and rise when you want, eat when you want, be active when you want and sleep when you want. - Bring some food in from one of the places in Paia to keep around -- fruit, milk, etc. - daily supplies that will keep you going since you're a good 20 minutes from the grocery store, and driving that road at night can be precarious. - I'm going to write a review of this as well, but the Paia Fish Market, right on the main corner of town is unbelievably good. I recommend the fish and chips with lots of vinegar and Tabasco. Ugh. I am drooling thinking about it. - Pack a picnic and head to Hana for the day. Take every opportunity to turn left as you head out and get to the coast for amazing, out-of-the-way waterfalls. Ignore signs for private property if you're particularly adventurous (which we were.)

Great accommodations and clear instructions on procedures and policies that they send and communicate via e-mail. Also a wonderful location in the center of Hana Town. Loved how they had the kitchen set up and there was instant oatmeal and coffee among other things provided. In this post-COVID era, you are assigned exclusive use of a bathroom. Codes are provided in the e-mail a few days prior to your arrival...one is for the downstairs main living room and kitchen, and the other is for your room and assigned bathroom. The rates are reasonable and much cheaper than the resort or even other B&Bs nearby. I guess the only issue was having to deal with any mosquitos, knowing this side of the island tends to be more lush compared to places like Kihei and Lahaina. Luckily, I did have my own mosquito repellant, but maybe for those who are more prone to mosquito bites and may have forgotten to pack some with them, perhaps some bug repellent spray could be provided. Anyways, I hope to stay at Hana Inn again sometime down the road. It sure beats having to deal with the crazy and bad traffic where I live in Honolulu.

But above all that, three things stood out 1. The host! Claudia was the ideal host: extremely friendly and welcoming, but also happy to let us have our privacy and enjoy the property. 2. The pool! What could be better than a private pool with a view of a volcano? According to my 5 year old, not much! We loved being able to splash and play every day. The house also has a great supply of pool toys (floaties, balls, loungers) available. 3. The fruit! The house is surrounded by orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees, and after a quick tour and instructions from Claudia, we were welcome to pick whatever we'd like. My in-laws were particularly delighted by the chance to have fresh passionfruit. It was an upcountry Maui experience we won't forget.

At the same time I want to rave about how wonderful this stay was. A beautiful hidden gem located in Hana. There is an option of staying at the bungalow or at the guest house. We stayed at the bungalow in June for our upcoming 1 year wedding anniversary, the surroundings were breath taking. A time warp into the jungles of Maui. The bunglow is better suited for couples, it has one bed, a jetted tub, and the tub is located on the patio. Although there are no privacy windows surrounding the patio, you will feel very comfortable because of how high up you are in the bungalow and the number of tropical foliage surrounding the bungalow. Picture a 600 sq ft tree house for grown ups. As ironic as this may sound, a five star hotel normally would not have any critters running around, but I give this place a 5 star rating for the taste of serenity that I have not experienced at any other hotel before. Here in beautiful Hana, you get the true experience of sharing with nature. At night the geckos come out from the rafters of the bungalow and you share the home with the geckos. At night you hear them running across the glass. You also learn survival skills of turning off all lights in the bungalow and leaving on the magic moonlight switch on the patio to lure the bugs and geckos to one side of the home to feed the geckos. If you can live with the geckos and bugs, this is as close to heaven you can get. Without glass windows on the patio, it is instead covered by netting that allows the sounds of nature to come through, you can hear the ocean waves from coast of Hana Beach at night. In the morning you can hear the birds chirping. The short bursts of pouring Maui rain can also be heard and is a calming sound. The laundry machine is outdoors. You share with the guest house. The guest house is quite a distance from the bungalow and you do feel like you're alone even if you are on the same lot. The kitchen is stocked with all the cookingware you may need if you want to cook, dishes, utensils, and dining ware. The bungalow even has a coffee maker, toaster, and stove. In the garden patio, there is a barbecue that you can use. You will have to bring a bag of bbq coals with you unless the previous guest left some behind. The room also comes with a small radio with cd player and some Hawaiian CD's. This might sound cheesy now listening to Hawaiian music in Hawaii, but while you are staying there experiencing the rain, nature, and that feeling of bliss inside you, the Hawaiian music you listen to at the bungalow will be the sounds of serenity you will remember when you're back at your cubicle working the following week. There are a few cats that roam around the home, they live there, and if you're lucky enough, you'll get a happy greeting from them. You have to make a private reservation with the owner of this home to stay here. $225 per night plus 11.42% tax, 3 nights minimum reservation. We booked the minimum of 3 nights here to stay in Hana for the beginning of our trip in Maui and the rest of the trip in hotels in Kaanapali resort area, the first 3 nights was the highlight of our Maui trip. The reservation was a very simple process: 1) Email hamoabay@maui.net or call the owner at (808) 248-7884 asking if the dates you want to visit is available. We booked the trip around being able to stay at the bungalow, we were open to June or September. 2) After setting the available date and reserving, you provide a 50% deposit with the balance due 30 days in advance of the arrival date. You can book with your credit card over the phone. 3) You receive a confirmation receipt by email. 4) After final payment you get your secret directions to finding the hidden gem. 5) Upon arrival you call to tell the owner that you've arrived. 6) You try to cope with your much removed state from the busy life you've escaped from. 7) Day 2, you've succeeded in step 6. Now you explore Hana. 8) Day 3 (if you book only 3 days), you're now sad that you know that this is the last night at the bungalow. 9) Day 4, checking out. You're now sad you have to go and you actually say goodbye to the geckos. 10) Day 5, back at work. You think about booking a trip to Maui again to stay at the bungalow, Go for it! First of all you are tucked away in the jungle seemingly alone i.e. far from others staying there, and separated from nature by screening. Sounds of jungle birds are unreal! Since our bungalow was up in the trees and our view was of the treetops, we really felt like Tarzan and Jane. There is an Indonesian feel to the place. The shower seemed outdoors since on the lanai and surrounded by floor to ceiling screening. I loved the batik material panels surrounding the shower/tub. The breeze running through the bungalow kept them flowing. Lots of bamboo in the decor, the bed base etc. The soft lighting was accomplished by the large white paper lanterns that we've all seen before -- so charming in this setting. The owner has Kona coffee for your breakfast in the little kitchen with beautiful jungle view and brings homemade banana bread every morning. She also had a sound system on the lanai with a choice of great music. - We loved the Hawaiian sounds. Lovers who had stayed here wrote their experiences in a beautiful journal which we found ~ wonderfully romantic reading ~ we added our stories ~ Exotic, Enchanting, Unique, Unforgettable, Extraordinary!

We are here for our honeymoon but this place would be awesome for two couples or a family to get away that's right on the beach with great dining, shopping and activities close by, but not overrun with people like the major hotels.

The king bed is firm but comfortable. The outside kitchen area is perfect, you may share a refrigerator with others but the empty wine cooler serves as another refer. Price is pretty good when comparing to other B&B's in the area. The manager is awesome, he can even help you get a table at Momma's Fish House. Now that is service. Plenty of beach gear is available for guests also. They will do a lot to make sure your visit was a good one. I'll be back for sure.

This was our first trip to Maui, and honeymoon, and I had SO many questions. Brete was patient and such a great resource. You can really feel the aloha and pride they have for Maui. Not only was he helpful in our Airbnb chats, but he had one of the most thorough guidebooks at the condo. And a lovely touch, we had a handwritten welcome note and a few Maui treats to start our stay! Now on to the condo, G110 in the Ginger cluster (so cute) this is such a beautifully appointed home with the most wonderful patio (lanai) view! I am not a morning person, but I was up by 6:30 with my coffee on the lanai enjoying the sounds of the island waking up. The patio alone is reason to book this condo! All sorts of birds and of course, the famous Maui chickens, walk the lawn. One morning I saw a cute little mongoose of some sort! That was definitely not on my bingo card, but a magical moment. Also, the property is immaculate in its care...beautiful landscaping and I loved the Christmas decor. We had our own parking spot super close to the unit too. There is something so special about traveling to an island during Christmas time...we ended each night cuddled on the comfy couch watching holiday shows. Speaking of comfy, even though I don't prefer a soft bed, I slept like a baby in the master bedroom. I really appreciated having 2 bathrooms, to get ready faster for our adventures! There's even a 2nd lanai right off the bedroom, beautiful light in the mornings. Brete is thoughtful to offer beach chairs and fun equipment for the beach, saving us more money for Mai Tais! I love to cook at home, but I took the honeymoon off...I did look into the kitchen, and not only do they have a lovely new stove, but they also had everything you could possibly need if you wanted to whip up meals. We only used the stove to reheat leftover kalua pork & pineapple pizza from South Shore Tiki Lounge. Please don't judge, it's fantastic with jalapenos! We ADORED our stay in Kihei, it's such a great middle point between Lahaina and Wailea. So many wonderful beaches close by, Kamaole 1, 2, and 3, as well as Keawakapu. Parking was a breeze at all of these beaches and if you love snorkeling, you must add Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve to your list, 25 minutes south! My list of faves from our time in Kihei: Water: We rented paddle boards from Aunty Snorkel, great service and integrity. Ask for Mark or Jake! They checked conditions before completing our transaction, there's no refunds for weather or wind conditions. Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel-the highlight of our trip, based in Lahaina. Try and reserve a tour with Captain Jill and Casey. I am an avid snorkeler and have been on countless excursions. These two ladies were so knowledgeable, and you could feel their "malama kai" care for the ocean. Two snorkel stops & we were fortunate to see whales, even though it was super early in the season November 28th!!! Breaching, blow spouts and three whale tails, great show. I can only imagine how it is in the swing of the whale season. Food: Nalu's South Shore Grill had the best island pancakes, and my hubs raved about their fried mahi fish and chips (the chips were tempura green beans, yum) Three's Bar & Grill had the best Happy Hour, top-shelf Mai Tais for $9 and an extensive HH food selection. Ask for Paul's section or sit at the bar with Chris...yes we went twice! FYI, there is a Maui HH app you can download and search by city! Ululani's Shave Ice-get the Roselani's ice cream in the middle and the milk topper, you won't regret it! South Shore Tiki Lounge is in the perfect spot, right next to Kihei food truck's (must get the chicken katsu curry at Happy Belly) and shopping at Kihei Kalama Village. My tip, sit in Janey's section & have a few HH drinks and listen to live music here! Great way to unwind after a day of water activities. Kahale's Bar- I love a dive bar and Kahale's fit the bill! Local live music by Kenny K. Roberts and bartenders Dylan, Jeff, and "Stiffy" were an entertaining cast of characters! This condo is also really close to a Foodland (a Maui supermarket institution that is not to be missed!) The salt & vinegar chicken wings are to die for, and they have a fantastic deli, lots of great poke & local treats. Finally, we cannot recommend more, the talented artist Kiko Yamada, Ninjasketch! I had been following her for over a year, we had our honeymoon caricature done at Kalama Village. It was such a pleasure to meet her and hear her story. The ants will find it. We put everything in the fridge or hanging baskets. There are paths to waterfalls and the ocean although you would have to be in decent shape to get to the ocean. It's treacherous and very very steep. We woke up everyday to watch the sunrise. Although you can't watch the sunrise from this side but it's still very beautiful. Kutira is very gracious and such a great host. They keep this place immaculate. I noticed the details like everything is dusted and clean. I love that they compost, recycle and feed their chickens with scraps. I love that there is no TV and we really enjoyed the sounds of the tropics. Me and two friends stayed at the Thai Houli place for 6 days and it was very comfortable. Be warned though, there is no AC and the geckos come out at night. For any sort of trails in the area, you must have hiking shoes or something with traction. No flip flops. You will regret it. The volunteers here are friendly and come from all over. There are great amenities that will cost extra. Like the yoga ($10) and Thursday evening Sound Baths ($25), Beach Towels ($3), coconut keifer ($13) So be sure to bring cash for tips and extras.

The room was dirty. There is no privacy in the bathroom. There is a curfew of 10 pm. My husband and I needed a quiet break from life to help our marriage and create harmony in our souls - the opposite happened at this place. Worst of all, these people advertised to have people vacation at their campground when the fires hit Maui. They did not open their doors to locals to give them a place to stay. They encouraged travelers to come vacation - even after Ed Sniffen, Hawaii's director of transportation strongly discouraged travel due to needing airlines and roads cleared to help aid people in need. I would give 0 stars if I could.
