We love snorkeling and were planning a trip to Oahu this month. We knew snorkeling on the North Shore was out due to the high surf, so that left Hanauma Bay as our best opportunity. We know the state now has a lottery that requires you to sign up 2 days in advance, and the tickets go quickly. We did not want to risk not getting to go, so we booked an excursion, as they are given spaces for their guests.I checked the reviews and choices and booked with Hanauma Bay Snorkel Adventures several weeks before our trip. We know that mornings are best for water clarity and calmer surf - and we've found the fish tend to be more abundant in the AM, so we booked the morning slot. We received emails and were told the van would pick us up at our Waikiki hotel at 5:40 a.m. We were waiting a few minutes, and then the van came to our hotel. We climbed in, and with 2 other couples and the driver, we were off in the dark. First stop was their dive shop - on the way, on the other side of Diamond Head. Snorkel gear was distributed (we brought our own), and then we climbed into the van and drove a short distance to the Hanauma Bay entrance. We gathered as a small group and went into the park together (you'll bring $25 cash each person for the Hanauma Bay ticket - not included in the excursion payment). There is a mandatory short movie (around 15 minutes) that is primarily a primer to keep the reef and marine life safe. We took the free tram down to the bay (you can also walk - a bit of a steep hill). They have bathrooms with changing stalls at the beach. We were on the beach as the sun's first rays shone across the bay - it was a beautiful morning. We got in 3 separate snorkel sessions going out into zone 2 (through the buoys and past the first reef) where it's deeper, and we saw greater numbers of fish. If this is your first time snorkeling or you are less experienced, I would caution you to check with the lifeguards on the beach before doing this.About 3 hours later, it was time to pack up, and we took the tram to the top, where we waited a few minutes with the group we traveled with in the morning. Our van showed up and drove us straight back to our hotel. We very much enjoyed the day, but honestly would have preferred to be on our own so we could choose when we wanted to leave. But for many who visit Oahu and stay in Waikiki, this is a good way to snorkel at Hanauma Bay. NOTE: I do see a number of reviews that speak of rude staff and substandard transportation. No. Don't. Before you try to book this company, better do your own research or you'll end up getting bitter and expensive experience like us. We booked this company since we couldn't get reservation at Hanauma Bay. So this is the only option to enjoy Hanauma Bay with transportation BUT you still have to purchase Hanauma Bay tickets at the ticket counter BY YOURSELF. And depending on the time and hour, the wait can range between 30 minutes to 2 hours. So the point I'm trying to get across is BOOK YOUR HANAUMA BAY TICKETS AHEAD OF TIME so you don't have to purchase from any third party company. Second issue. is the driver. Unfortunately we had such a RUDE, IMPATIENT, and DISRESPECTFUL DRIVER, JAMES. I had two teenagers kids with me who unfortunately were late by 5 minutes by the time he picked us up. You know what he did/said? He made rude and degeratory comments, jokes all the way from the moment we sat down until he dropped us off. Also, this guy has a short temper problem for sure. The way he drives endangered the passengers. During the trip, somebody stopped in front of him and pissed him off. The guy ended up whipping out his phone and taking picture of him. Not long after that, two ladies were trying to cross the street, he didn't look carefully and almost hit them, then he got angry for no reason and gave them a hand. Those were just uneventful experiences that we witnessed along with 8 other passengers who sat inside the van. After reading all the one review from this company, there are some people who got irritated by the driver named James as well. I know I'm not alone. We still had an awesome time snorkeling in Hanauma Bay regardless this awful experience with the driver. Mind you we paid a lot for this transportation service for total of three people. But what's more painful is the feeling you received after someone made you feel less by his degeratory and sarcastic jokes in front of family and strangers. read more

This snorkel adventure was a nice escape to a beach that wasn't overcrowded. Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve, but you are able to swim with the fish and feel safe from any danger of sharks as there is a coral reef that pretty much prevents them from coming in. Hanauma Bay Snorkel Adventures picks you up at one of the major hotels in a white, unmarked van. The instructions they emailed to confirm the reservation is very thorough so be sure to read it closely. They picked us up at 8:00 and our feet didn't hit the beach until 10:00. We had to meet back up at 1:20 at our drop off location. The driver, Jack, was a great conversationalist and he had a lot of information about the island and gave us some historical background which was great. read more

I made the decision that it was unwise for me to go on the shuttled tour to Hanauma Bay----snorkeling or not. I got on my device in the middle of the night to find out how to contact the tour desk at the Hilton Hawaiian Village where we were staying and where I booked the tour through. The desk opened at 7:30 am----I called at 7:31 and spoke with a very understanding agent explaining that I had documentation of my chemotherapy drug and the side effect of diarrhea I could provide. I knew there was a 48 hour cancellation window for this 7:45 am tour, but she contacted the vendor but he said he could do nothing and would not refund or even re-schedule. I went to the hotel tour deck later in the day after medication began working and met with Jen who I had spoken with earlier. She again contacted the vendor who would not consider a refund. She gave me his name and number and I personally called "Florin" of the company to explain the circumstances as I thought I was doing the responsible thing for myself and his van and his customers with the guarantee that he would have to clean up a mess in his van. He still wouldn't consider a refund for even 1 of our 2 tickets. I followed up with a text and copies of my cancer drug and side effects asking him to forward to his manager or owner. No response. Cancer is bad enough but the lack of understanding or compromise is beyond sad. read more

Customer service and honesty needs to improve. They told me today was not a box jellyfish day and it was when I got there so could not snorkel. They could have rebooked me for tomorrow when the box jellyfish are gone. The state I now know puts out a calendar of the few days to avoid the water - the past 3 days and then not again til after a full moon. Starting at the beginning (hopefully the good stuff will be at the end!) It's 7:10 am. We're picked up at the Waikiki Marriott at 5:50 am. We're standing in our second line. A bit of a harrowing drive getting here. The Ford Econoline van was a bit rickety. The air conditioning worked great but unfortunately all of the overhead vents were all broken so you couldn't tone it down early in the mor. I won't throw our driver under the bus so I'll leave his name out - speed limits were damned this morning. A few 25 and 35 mph zones - we weren't even close. Even a "California stop" at a few stop signs. Passed the entrance to the park and saw the sun after it just came up at the Molokai lookout. We pulled over and waited in the van for about 10 minutes. Killing time waiting to get in line to enter. Once in the park, our driver did a pretty good job of getting us instructions and keeping our group together. We got a 7:30 entry time. So we waited as a group, through two lines, to get our tickets and then to watch the video. All in all, to this point, I think it's been pretty easy. Just wasn't prepared for the waiting (thus my reason for writing this). So it's 11:50 now and our driver just picked us up and we're headed back to Waikiki. Snorkeling and Hanaumu Bay were excellent. When we made our reservation, we paid for two chairs and an umbrella. If you want a little shade but be right next to the water, this is the way to go! So glad we did. The snorkel, fins and mask were okay - not great, but okay. My wife had no problems with the mask, I have a bit of a wide forehead so mine didn't seal great. But made it okay. The current was pretty good today so having the fins was very helpful for navigating the coral. So bottom line, this service is a pretty hassle free way of getting to Hanauma Bay, getting into the park and getting back out again. The equipment is satisfactory for a morning of simple snorkeling. The beach chairs and umbrella makes relaxing on the beach easy if you require those amenities. If snorkeling Hanauma Bay is on your todo list on Oahu, this is not a bad route to take. read more

Your ticket time states that you sell us a snorkeling trip 8am - 2pm. Pickup was 7:45am. So return reasonably is 1:45pm? Well no! The owner and driver cuts off 1.5 Hrs of snorkel time for transport. You don't see that until you purchase a ticket and read the confirmation instructions. We were on time at 1:45, but the owner showed up irate, says his driver didn't even speak English, this isn't Uber, and left his customers stranded in the parking lot on our 2pm departure slot. His hospitality was our worst experience on the island. Clear communication about departure is critical information. And lying to travelers about how much time is snorkeling versus baked into travel is an unfair business practice, borderline scam. Mind you the entire process was sketchy. They had us swap vehicles midway as their van was making a tick noise. Van had no seatbelts. Then the vans stops at a local rental company near the bay for the gear which is a separate company. Looks like the van company uses third party store for a kickback or discount. The tour guide also left us at the ticket gate, and like many other reviewers stated the company is also using walk-in tickets and likely cannot guarantee you all a ticket. Our pick-up time was 5:45 AM on June 16th, and everyone was there by 5:40 AM. Unfortunately, our driver never greeted us, never introduced himself, and seemed unfamiliar with the words "please" and "thank you." He barked out orders to our group of 10 nonstop, which included four people over 70 and two children under 10. He was very condescending and always seemed to be in a huge rush, even though we ended up sitting on the highway waiting since the parking gate doesn't open until 6:45 AM. On the way back, it was much of the same--barking orders and rushing us, even though we were all there 10 minutes early, as he had requested. Never in all my travels have I met such a miserable driver from a touring company. (He also left his lunch on the passenger seat and didn't bother to move it, but in the grand scheme of things, that's a minor issue.) read more

The location was fantastic, however the getting there and getting back was not. First off, the van they picked us up in felt like it had at least 200k miles on it. It was rusty, the suspension was non existent and the seat belts tightned up around enough for me to risk not using the seat belt for a portion of the trip. On the way there, we went to the Hanauma Bay location but then immediately left after we got a ticket (presumably to reserve our entry time into the park). At that point, we went to a strip mall to pick up our gear. I don't know why we bothered to fill in all the details when signing up because we had to go through it all again when we got there. Driving back to Hanuama Bay, we get there and then we get told that we may need to wait for an hour or two before entering. Great time to mention that after we've already spent an hour or so getting to this point. An aside here -- while waiting, we found out that the snacks at the stand were ridiculously priced. $7.25 for a bottle of gatorade, $9 for a pre-packaged ice cream. This isn't on the Hanauma Bay Snorkel Adventures, but I do feel like they could've done a much better job of preparing everyone for what was to come. The park allows you to bring food in from the outside and there was a Walgreens at the strip mall where we picked up our gear. If someone had just mentioned that the food at the park was expensive, we would've picked something up at the strip mall to bring in. When we finally made it down to the beach, the umbrella that we rented wouldn't go into the ground properly. In addition, the latch that holds the umbrella was broken and it wouldn't stay in. We ended up not using it. We also discovered that the pricing for renting equipment at the park is reasonable and in the same ballpark as what we were charged as part of the package. Given that we had to lug around the equipment the whole time and then back up to the van when we left, I would've much preferred to rent at the park instead. Overall, I don't feel like this was a great experience here on the island. Again this is not reflective of the experience at the park itself, but of the tour company that arranged everything else around it. read more

It really is beautiful here and you should most definitely go here once in your life. Went snorkeling and relaxed on the beach here and I have to say, I'm not the biggest I'm fan of snorkeling it feels awkward and the tide pushed me into the reef on a few occasions, which totally made me freak out because they are super adamant about humans keeping their hands off the reef. If I were just focusing on the aesthetics of this experience, it would be easily five perfect stars. The reason I'm giving it less is because of their inability to reserve a spot in any other way than showing up early and asking for a same day visit. This is a shuttle service with rental equipment for the bay. It was worth it to us to have transportation and not have to worry about parking and a reservation. Our driver, Matthew, was awesome! He told us about the area and what to expect when we got to the bay. We rented chairs and an umbrella. It was worth it to have those things when we wanted a break from being in the water. The snorkel equipment was just ok. They also rent this equipment at the bay. We also rented an underwater camera but it was tricky to use. I would skip the camera next time. I highly recommend using this service if it is your first time to Hanauma Bay. This park is a pain to get into, so I definitely think it is worth the money for the time you save and the ease of getting into the park. You do not need a reservation to Hanauma Bay, snorkeling gear or transportation for this service. We were the 2nd group entering the park!!! (Hanauma Bay is extremely popular so this is an incredible feat) I recommend choosing the 6am time. We entered the park by 7:20am (mind you the park opens at 7am). Having the van pick you up by 11:50am is PLENTY of time for you to explore hanauma bay, take breaks, eat, etc. Snorkeling gear: There has been a few poor comments regarding this.. I did not have any problems. It's typical to take a break and clear your goggles and it's important to remember to only breath through your mouth to avoid fogging. Flippers are included and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THEM. Helps you stay afloat and swim longer (even if you have never used them before). Final 2 cents: rent a life vest. My husband and I are strong swimmers, but it's important to not get exhausted, enjoy your time out there, and protect the reefs. The life jackets allowed us to stay afloat the very shallow areas and not touch or harm the reefs. I honestly don't know how ppl do it without them (saw a few ppl touch aka damage the reef, don't be like them!!!) James/Kimo was our driver and he was great. Would not recommend. The service fee included round trip transportation and the rental of snorkel mask and fins. The van was old, dirty and worn down. Seat belts were also old and tattered. Napkin was stuck in the AC vent (see photo). Their way of doing business seemed sketchy. There's an entrance fee to the Bay which we were aware of. However, we were asked to give our cash to a member of the other party in our van... we were told by the driver that only one person from our group was allowed to pay at the entrance. This seemed very odd to us but we did as we were told. Although the driver was very nice, I was expecting somewhat of an narrated explanation of the areas we were driving past; as was the case with all other transportation tours we did. This did not happen. The driver only spoke to the passenger next to him. Once we were dropped off at the bay, we had to find a grassy area to wait at. Next, we had to line up in a long line. Later, we had to wait in another line for the actual entrance to the bay. We were picked up from our hotel at 7:45 am and did not enter the bay till 10:45. It seemed like a waste of precious time. We were taken to a small store where we had to pick up our snorkel gear. This felt very rushed and no one explained anything to us. We were asked if we wanted to rent vests, chairs and an umbrella in addition to the snorkel gear we had already paid for. We honestly did not know if this was needed and no one was available to give us details regarding what to expect at the Bay once we arrived so we ended up renting everything that they offered but I regretted it for various reasons. First, they offer everything you need at the bay for rent. Second, the items we rented through this service were dirty and old. The fins had sand in them when I received them so it was obvious they had not been cleaned and disinfected (see photo). Third, my mask did not work. I called the rental place and they were trying to walk me through fixing it but it did not work. this tour doesn't tell you the truth on how their package works. they picked us up from our hotel at 545am and we did not get into the bay to watch the required 9 minute video until 845am. why do we need to get picked up that early if you don't set up an appt to get in. they just get in a line and what ever number the driver gets is your slot to enter the park. our driver went to a look out but the parking was full because the bay wasn't open yet and other vans/tourist were there also waiting. then he randomly took us to a gun range. the van complained since non of us knew why he wasn't driving us to the bay. then the driver when back to the look out and we took some pictures and all the vans started leaving and our driver was told by the another driver that they needed to go since the bay was opening and he kept ignoring him, until the other driver just left due to the time. we were last van to leave the look out, so other tours got 720am slots to enter the park and we got a 840. the driver lied to us saying we would get in like 730am and that 840am was not the actual time but he was wrong. we also have to pay to get in and the driver didn't have change for the required cash, once he got change and collected the money he wanted to hand it to one of the people in the group. on one wanted to hold onto all of the tours cash and he picked a young couple to hold the money to pay to enter the bay. someone in the group yelled out "you better count it first" which was a good thing since the driver shorted the money holder $50. we all said we paid and he just wanted to leave and let us figure it out, but we insisted he had the money that was missing, and that he must have lost the $60 dollars. He didn't have any answers for how we were getting in if he lost the money and wanted us to figure it out since he had to "leave to avoid a ticket" after a while of the driver searching for the money he finally found the missing money in his pocket outside of his wallet. I saw him pull it out and it was on the outside of his wallet. he gave us the missing $50, we took the snorkel gear which worked and went to the bay after 840am and then the same driver picked us up and took us back and he insisted that he lost $60 and the $50 he gave us was his. even though he didn't have ten dollar bills and needed to get two tens for a twenty for change. Don't use this company other companies dropped people off at 800am for 810 and 820 appt slots to get into the bay. or you can uber/lyft/taxi there and rent snorkel gear at the bay or bring your own from an abc store for less money than this tour. Visited Hanauma for the first time with my children and our driver Peete was clearly intoxicated and a dangerous driver. He showed road rage, refused to give us his name and was swerving in and out of lanes. I attempted to ask him our itinerary or for information about what was going on and he ignored me as if he did not speak English. went with these with my family to Hanauma bay. It was a group ride with several others and an international group. It was horrible. All from the start the driver was passive aggressive, cussing out other drivers. The car was extremely messy and dirty. I wouldn't mind it if it was only old, but dirty, smelly and untidy is not what I expect. There was plenty of information materiel in the car, but the driver just threw a laminated map of the bay at me, asking if I knew the state fish. Upon arriving at the bay things quickly got worse. The driver got a ticket with a time slot for the group, but offered no particular information why this was important or what we we where supposed to do. He then drove us all down to a shop where we got our rentals. He then started yelling about money for the fee to the bay. As it eventually dawned to the group it was necessary to be exactly the ticket price for all. This being an international group everyone didn't understand English as well. The driver did nothing to remedy this, just going round the car screaming for the money. We, the customers, where left to our own, figureing it all out with everyone, using Google translate gaping the language barrier and finding an ATM. The driver then appointed me to be responsible for making the payment for the group. The driver eventually drove us to the bay, dropping us of without further explanation. Luckily we all have learned to ask for help. Before he left though, he cut 20 minutes off our time at the bay, stating he would pick us up at 01.10, even though our confirmation clearly stated 01.30. Pointing this out was just brushed off. This was the best, as the people at the shop where fairly organized. We got our beach chairs, diving masks and unbrella whiteout any trouble. Getting our swimming fins, though went not nearly as smooth. Remember the unorganize, messy car? This is where they keep the fins. In an unorganized mess, with the representative not making a single effort sorting it out- wasting more of our time. Hughely disappointed with this service. read more

Had a relatively smooth experience with Hanauma Bay Snorkel Adventures (as many have said, this company isn't related to the actual Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve). We purchased the travel package and we were picked up on time from a Waikiki hotel that was close to our Airbnb. The rental equipment also worked well. That being said, a couple tips and things we'd do differently next time: 1) If you can, plan ahead and reserve on the official website of the Bay ahead of time (I think 48 hours in advance, spots open at 7 am). Then, rent your gear either at the beach or at any snorkel store in Honolulu and you can just show up to the Bay and not wait in line for walk-in reservations. Then, your total cost per person becomes $25 (entrance fee for Hanauma Bay) + snorkel rental + transportation as opposed to $75 here ($50 transportation package + $25 entrance fee). 2) Going with the snorkel adventures company is a good option if you were unable to get the reservation. We went for the 8 am slot, and we'd probably do the 6 am next time so we'd have to wait less in line. 3) We rented underwater cameras (similar to Gopro) from this company as well. It was $25, and an additional $20 for a memory card that was required for capturing your footage on the camera. After reviewing the footage, it was extremely choppy and low quality. Would really love if the company here could upgrade the gear (either to real older model gopro cameras instead of cheap knockoffs) and also advertise that you need to purchase the memory card. I use the same card for my drone and if I had the heads up I would have brought my own card. The footage was basically unusable and I kid you not, looked like it was from a webcam in the early 2000s. Not worth $45 IMHO. The bay itself was beautiful, and we were able to see tons of fish, including parrotfish, triggerfish, etc. The fish were not afraid at all of all the snorkelers and knowing what I do now, would definitely go again, try and reserve a spot myself, and bring my own gear + a better camera. Just a heads up, this place is not a part of Hanauma Bay. We booked online thinking it was in the park. I contacted them about the mix up and confusion and they would only refund 50%. I'm sure they've gotten a few visitors this way. So just be aware when you visit their site. Pretty sure this happens or more often than none. And they just take half of your money. They should make it clear for visitors that they have no affiliation to the actual bay. We ended up going to Hanauma bay and getting our tickets and snorkel gear there. Great place for beginners to snorkel. Had both of my kids in the water neither of really have done much in the past. They loved it. Was busy early in the morning and started to clear out by noon. read more

no pick up with an attitude we paid for transportation for pick up at Twin Fin on July 13. Our pick up was scheduled for 7:45 am. I called around 7:30 am to confirm they were on their way. I was told the driver was coming. At 8 am there was no driver. I called and all of a sudden I was getting the run around like they didn't have my reservation. I was put on hold and came back and was told he forgot to pick us up. The agent then proceeded to tell me to take an Uber at my own expense. He was yelling and I was yelling too. he basic said take an under and I will give your money back. What! I had to rent a car and go there ourselves. we used their company name to get a parking spot but that's it. It was 9 am and had to do no reservations entry at 12:05 pm . what a disaster! In the end they refunded our money and we paid $3 to park & the entry fee. It was way cheaper on my own and we could stay until closing. Just do it yourself and go early. 5 Stars for the transportation 0 Stars for the fact that even though we were in the park sooo early we still were issued tickets for the mandatory film that were much later and had to wait a while. This might be a Hanauma bay issue but if we are picked up at 5:45am and enter the park at 6:45/7AM seems strange to get tickets for a 9:40am Film screening. Though we didn't have to wait that long, it was very misleading. 0 Stars for the snorkel equipment - The "ninja mask" and standard mask did not work for the both of us! I did really like the fins though but obviously not the most important part. 2 Stars for the beach rentals - the umbrella kept flying away so we had to disassemble it. There were many other umbrellas that were up near us with no issues but they were built better for the wind. The beach chairs were fine. In short, I would use them for the transportation (because you are guaranteed entry and don't need to reserve tickets) and maybe some beach chair rentals but DO NOT rent anything else especially the snorkel equipment - it's garbage. I first visited Hanauma Bay in May of 2010. It's THE most fun experience. If you are on Oahu on vacation, then this is definitely one of the places to visit if you have never been here. It's absolutely beautiful here and I've blown up photographs that I took of the Bay and hung them in my house. Before you can enter the water, you will be required to watch a wildlife safety video. Basically, you are not allowed to step on the coral or touch any of the wildlife. As far as snorkeling equipment, we had our own and brought it with us. You can find them pretty much everywhere... even at the Wal-Mart. I can guarantee that you will see wildlife here. Approximately 400 species are known to live at the bay, including Green sea turtles, Butterfly Fish, Tang, Triggerfish, and plenty of parrotfish. Watch out for jellyfish and Moray eels. Along the left point of the bay is the "Toilet Bowl" which can be describe like a natural spa tub that gently rises and falls with the tide. This area is usually closed due to injuries suffered by visitors. You don't necessarily have to be a strong swimmer to snorkel here. I can't swim... ...so, snorkeling for the first time was a bit scary for me. But DAMN it was fun. We paid $7.50 each to get in, watched the most amusingly corny video about not feeding or stepping on anything, and snorkeled for a good 4 hours. This place is especially good for non-swimmers like myself because it's pretty shallow (maybe about 4 feet) even when you go pretty far off the beach. You can even see fish even about 10 feet off the beach. It was absolutely amazing and definitely a must-do in Oahu! read more

I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw this place. It was freaking amazing. There was absolutely no parking so my boyfriend, his fam and I ended up parking on the street and walking ten minute up to the place.by the time we got up there, the security puts away the parking lot full sign away. Ugh...but its okay, at least we were avoiding traffic when everyone decides to leave. when we hiked our way through the traffic (felt like a hike) there was a line. Yes, theres an admissin fee to get into this bay. (crazy aint it?) Made sense though. This was the best place to snorkel. I kind of forgot how much the fee was for each person, but I think its around $5-7$. Bring your own food! there is a small food place but its about 10^$. I remcommend you all to get there early because it closes at 5-6. This place is perfect for a family adventure. By the way, your own water. their water is a bit pricey. Their food stand is pretty expensive as well. If i remembered correctly, they only had nachos and hot dogs as food and only can eat before you enter. I think it's because they don't want people to feed the fishes. . REMEMBER to get a waterproof camera @ Walmart! It will be worth it! :) Hope you all have fun like I did! Reminder: if you can't snorkel or it is your first time, i would suggest you to practice before coming, there are a lot of sharp coral reefs all over the place. I took my bf to snorkel on our annual visit this summer, he is not a strong swimmer (basically he can float and semi doggie paddle) and I knew this would be a safe place for him to enjoy seeing the fish and at the same time not fight the current or drown. At one time I was lifeguard certified but that was ages ago! My review from 2011 still stands, although I have since lost my kamaaina status (cue sob fest) and paid $7 admission and $1 for parking. Summer is def better for snorkeling than winter, and there were probably at least 15-18 species of ocean life we were able to spot on our 3 hour snorkel adventure. I have my own gear so I didnt rent any there. Make sure to bring water and a snack, sunscreen, and towel. I forgot a towel this time so I just air dried myself up the hill back to the car and then home. May I suggest Koko marina shopping center for a bite or shaved ice after your snorkel adventure? read more
