I was desperate for gelato or ice cream after dinner one night and my friend recommended we give Hansel's a try. I loved their huge selection of flavors, the amazing service, and the knowledge and patience of everyone who works there. I tried several flavors and opted for the sampler which allows for four smaller scoops. My least favorite flavor was the one closest to chocolate chip and my favorite was one with honeycomb. Handel's had become known to have long lines and fun flavors. It's not an ice cream shop but rather an ice cream window - there's no seating. The line went by quickly, and you can't go wrong with any flavor you choose. Someone dropped their ice cream right in front of a window though which is causing customers to step into a sticky mess that appeared to have only been cleaned with napkins. The employees could have taken a break and rinsed the sidewalk with hot water, at least! You can never go wrong with Handel's. I love to see how many locations they have now! I remember when the only one I had seen was the one in Long Beach. They deserve all the hype! Their watermelon sorbet tastes like the pink jolly rancher so it's pretty sweet. I really liked it. My favorite is the Graham Central Station. We wandered over to Handel's after tacos and cocktails and it hit the spot. You order right from the sidewalk, so it's easy to walk up, pick your cone, and keep moving. Service was quick and everyone was friendly. I got my favorite, mint chocolate chip on a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. When me and my family went here to get ice cream I got blue monster and my sister got strawberry. The blue monster does not hit the same like the Cookie Monster does at Callie cream. The strawberry ice cream does not have real strawberries in it so it makes it less good. I ordered a small pistachio ice cream cone. It was huge I asked for a cup so I could turn it upside down to eat. LOL, I know with my luck I would of dropped it. Exterior looked clean. We decided to get the Sampler which comes with 4 scoops of your choice of ice cream flavors. It was perfect for us since we had 4 people. I got my favorite... salted caramel truffle. My youngest daughter got mint chocolate chip. My eldest daughter got strawberry something. I don't remember what my brother got... sorry Bro. Thank you Brother for the sweet treat! Staff was okay. Service was quick. Unfortunately, 2 of the 4 flavors had already melted by the time we got the ice cream. The scoops looked small, too. We should have said something, but we didn't. I know they make their ice cream fresh daily and maybe those 2 flavors were a fresh batch and haven't solidified all the way through yet at the time. Always where I'll grab a quick dessert - just before leaving Oceanside on the train - this location is about 5 or 6 blocks from the transit station! The Service is excellent here ... even with sampling it is almost too difficult to settle on just one ... they have been very kind and patient with me. I'll always wind up ordering a 4-scoop 'Flight' - four scoops - 4 flavors - best price per scoop ratio ... I can usually narrow it down to just the top 4. And there will often be a theme to my selection - Bing Cherry / Peach / Strawberry Cheesecake / Key Lime Pie - a four fruit flavor medley ... as an example. Or the one with Some form of Chocolate in each scoop - you know - indecision like that. And you only can take it to go - there is no 'there' there - to eat it at ... literally no place to sit. You makes your choices, as you line up on the sidewalk, and when it is your turn at the window you quickly narrow it down to 4 flavors and get that. Just a walk up window or two - and the line sort of being 'roped off' with little signs along top of the anchor posts saying such things as "Remember, there are no lines for bad ice cream." on them. (Burma Shave ... ;) LOL). But, seriously, don't even think of trying to eat it there - unlike the Handel's Ice Cream in every other location where there ARE Benches to eat it at! This is the ONLY "To Go Only" Handel's location - that I know of! Handles is the best local ice cream shop around in my opinion. I've been going to the Carlsbad and the Oceanside shops ever since they opened respectively. The ice cream is always consistently delicious and through the times decently priced. I personally like the 4 scoop sampler as it gives me a chance to try more than one flavor.
