Located in the marketplace, it has the perfect seating with comfy chairs and couches. There is a fireplace to add to the ambiance, especially on a chilly winter evening. I opted for the S'mores with a waffle cone this time and was so happy with my choice. The graham ice cream was velvety smooth and the mini marshmallows and chocolate chips added the perfect contrast. Ice cream - Chocoholic chunk. It IS a Deep Dark Chocolate Ice Cream with Dark Chocolate Chips. It was very thick and did taste like very dark chocolate. Atmosphere - You order from a window in a wall. It reminds me of ordering a movie ticket from a window in a wall. A strange and strong odor or smell was coming from inside the shop. I am not sure if it IS floral bleach or incense. I have smelled the same scent at another ice cream shop as well as at a boba shop and also at a fresca shop. I most recently smelled the same scent at a grocery store. Seating is only outside on picnic benches. Service - There were about six or seven employees. The service here was quick. The employees in the back listen to the orders and scoop the ice cream. There were maybe two registers at the front. Order and pay at the counter. Self seating outside only. Parking - Surface parking lot. No parking meter or parking structures. Would love some shaded parking with solar panels or trees. A large parking structure would be amazing to help with traffic congestion in the parking lot. The parking lot is a bit weird. Unique - Nothing to note at this time. I've been to the Handel's location on Guadalupe in Gilbert and have loved it, and this location is no different! It's interesting that this one is a walk-up when every other food place in Tempe Marketplace has an inside component. Nonetheless, it makes the ordering and picking up process smoother. Can I start by saying: this place always has someone in line! Luckily, when me and a couple of friends went on a Friday night, they had a lot of staff working, so it never took that long to get orders out. The selection of ice cream flavors is quite impeccable if I do say so myself. Anyone can find something they like. I ordered a single scoop of their lemon bar flavor in a bowl and when the guy at the window handed it to me (not even a minute after I ordered, love that) it was massive. I'd say at least two medium-sized scoops. So, in this economy, you get what you pay for. The quality is there, the quantity is there, what's not to love? Anyway, the lemon bar flavor was delicious. So refreshing and decadent at the same time. The chunks of pie crust throughout had a perfect dense, yet light texture. I'm glad I ordered it it in a bowl because the thing melted in the 100 degree heat so fast lol. At this location, this shop is a walk up experience and doesn't offer a inside seating option (so be prepared for that). They have quite an extensive selection of different custard options. Our group tried the Black Raspberry Chunk, Salty Caramel Truffle, Birthday Cake, and Buckeye flavors. Each flavor combination was a solid 10/10. We talked about this custard for days after, it was so so good. I will caution that when we arrived, there were maybe only 6 people ahead of us, but it took a solid 20-25 minute wait before we could place our orders (they had 3 employees working). The pacing of service was not great, but the sheer deliciousness of the ice cream balanced that out. The thing that did frustrate us about this business was that the smallest size of ice cream they offer is a two scoop (even though it is advertised as a one schoop). I recommend splitting order with someone as they just give you a lot (what a problem to have, right?). I though the pricing was fair for as much as you get. read more

Lol tremendously generous, the equivalent of three ice cream scoops. Stopped at Handel's Tempe on our way home after dinner tonight - it's one of our fave ice cream places we like to go too, however this was NOT the one we normally go too - but they are all the same right? NOT! We asked for a half and half pint of ice cream which the junior behind the glass said "we don't do it that way".. really? You can't put ice cream side by side in a pint tub? It's not that hard! All we really wanted was our 2 ice cream choices side by side, not just dumped on top of each other. Our local Handel's on Nth Scottsdale Rd ALWAYS is able to do this without any problems - this location, I had to explain it 3 times how easy it is to do, but kept getting the same answer "we don't do it that way".. Not only that they got my wife's order completely wrong.. they gave her key lime pie instead of banana cream pie - not rocket science to serve ice cream. Also, Mr Handel's Store Manager, please ensure your staff are not sitting and eating ice cream cones in the store when their teammates are serving customers - looks completely unprofessional! I'm super happy to have Handel's so close to me now. Best part is they have so many dairy free/ vegan options. I'm in love with the chocolate coconut flavor, it's actually pretty rich and thick unlike most dairy free ice creams. The one downside to Handel's is that they don't really have smaller sizes and even though you are getting a lot for the price, they don't really have the option to size down. We were wandering Tempe marketplace just to enjoy the nice day and stumbled upon it reminding me I wanted to try it. I loved seeing that the ice cream is made fresh daily at each site. There are so many flavor options and in so many forms. You can get cones, cone bowls, ice cream pops, etc. There seemed to be only two people working but they moved quickly and we had zero wait for our scoops. Not knowing the size of a "single scoop" my son and I each got our own. My kiddo got the one with vanilla/chocolate ice cream with both brownie and cookie dough chunks. I got the salted caramel truffle. When I tell you they DO NOT mess around and absolutely FILL the ice cream with the mix-ins it's the truth. Every single bite was insanely delicious and matched the name perfectly. The ice cream was balanced and perfectly flavored and the truffles in mine were full of caramel. The cones were also delightful. Be aware, a single scoop can feed multiple people so next time we will get an edible bowl and share.
