This turned out to be one of the best coffee shops I've ever been to. What surprised me the most was their pricing -- I ordered the largest coffee, with oat milk and decaf, and it was only $7. That made me genuinely happy, especially considering that many other places charge way more for the same quality. The pastries were also very reasonably priced -- I got a bagel for just $3, which was another pleasant surprise. The space itself is awesome -- great vibe, beautiful design, packed with people, and clearly a very popular spot. They have a huge number of reviews and an average rating close to 5 stars, which is exactly what brought me here. And once I arrived, I understood why. People really love this place, and now I do too. The coffee is incredibly delicious, the staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is just fantastic. Everything was absolutely perfect. Amazing! My husband and I always make an effort to come here when we're in the area. Lines can be long but service is quick and efficient.

The entire place was awesome! The people, the experience, the coffee! Definitely going into my rotation of places to stop in at while in SB.

Came here a few times when I was in town last. Very trendy with a line out the door if you wait until late morning. I usually came early and so was able to gawk at the slackers. Staff is very friendly and prices on par. They sell beer too which is nice. Coffee was consistently good. Not otherworldly, however these days I'm very happy with good. Did cold brew and also a red eye over eye at different times (I'm boring and predictable). Breakfast goods were alright, with the cinnamon roll being my favorite. I really like this place and use it to study often. I'm giving it a three star however because of a few things. First, the prices are ridiculously high, one in particular being the orange juice in bottle from the fridge. They charged me $10 for what I think was 12 or 16oz of oj. That should be a crime. And you know how sometimes the smaller little details mean the most and say so much? (like their really nice soap in bathroom that smells so lovely ). Handlebar Café has a great atmosphere and a solid coffee program. I ordered a drip coffee, which was well-balanced with subtle high notes, likely a medium to light roast--possibly from South America if I had to guess. It was enjoyable but not particularly unique for the price. My go-to coffees are Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or Harrar, so I would have loved a bit more complexity. To give a sense of rankings, I would opt for Starbucks reserve, Blue bottle, Andytown, Verve. The latte, while smooth, was lukewarm--wish they had held the steam longer to keep the milk at a better temperature. handlebar downtown across from the presidio is operating in a different kind of calm you've got history right there. old walls. tourists moving slowly. people trying to figure out where they are in a thoughtful way and then this place just sits in the middle of it making extremely good coffee without making a big deal about it walk in and it's a little more grounded than de la vina. less bike congestion but still enough to remind you what's going on here. a few leaned outside like quiet evidence i still don't fully trust handlebars. feels like a commitment to control that i'm not ready to make. but again i respect the consistency coffee is dialed. got an americano. same result. clean, balanced, no confusion staff was smooth. no wasted motion. everything happening at the right speed people inside were on different tracks. some clearly starting their day. others halfway through something important. a couple just sitting there taking it in then you step outside with your coffee and you're staring at the presidio like time is layered in front of you it's one of those places where nothing is trying too hard and that's exactly why it works five stars good coffee in the middle of everything read more

Still the best coffee for me and always the first place to drop by in SB, this location or the other. Came by in February and this original location had expanded into the space next door! Much easier to find seating now. But it was still just the single bathroom as before. Hopefully the next expansion plan will go for a second bathroom:) Wife got her cappuccino and I got my usual americano, both excellent as always. Always a line for coffee here, but it moves fast. Owner working hard as always, was tamping espresso pretty much nonstop. That must be the magic touch to the espressos squeezed out here. But then again, I just checked out big sur area this month and had marked a stop at Coast Big Sur (scenic view cafe like place) since I read and had marked on my map they served Handlebar coffee. They made drip coffee and it was fantastic! (their sorbet, ice cream were pretty good too, but great views of course is what you're paying for there) I think next time I may just try the drip coffee here, right at the source!!! read more

Servers were kind, straight to the point. The ham and cheese croissant was really good. The croissant was nice and flakey, the ham wasn't store bought packaged ham. The bagel was a bagel. The place is busy with a consistent stream of people coming in and once you have the coffee you know why. We had the cordata and tumeric latte. Wish the latte could have been a little hotter but the drinks were good. The cordata was very good! They have baked goods (which we didn't try) and indoor plus outdoor seating, plenty of space. Honestly, the coffee was okay. Nothing too special that I would wait in line for or even come back to on my next trip up to Santa Barbara. That being said, be prepared if you order an iced coffee, they will serve it to you in a hot coffee cup. Meaning no lid that a straw can go through and the cup will start disintegrating if you don't drink fast enough. They really should invest in iced coffee cups or at least lids that allow straws to go through. read more

Coffee is okay, everyone's friendly except for a woman that seems to be the manager. Despite us paying for food when we were there, she gave me us multiple dirty looks for bringing in a coffee from elsewhere (I didn't want coffee from handlebar & only came for food). She even came up to me & very rudely grabbed my cup and asked to toss it away-- & for all she knows, the cup could've still had coffee in it. I was a paying customer & this was a very unwelcoming experience. Not sure I'd want to go back. Also, I saw many people bringing in food & drinks from different places or even not buying anything at all & just using the space, and they did not receive this treatment whatsoever. Parking is sometimes a struggle, we drove around twice until we found a close parking. Coffee - I ordered an iced vanilla latte which was delicious!! We have been coming to handlebar for a long time and every single time it is amazing!! Olivia helped us today and just as always the customer service is amazing!! Olivia was fantastic and went above and beyond to anwser our questions- I have never had a chai from here and was asking her opinion and she highly recommended it and said it was a spicy chai which is exactly what I love!! The matcha is also fantastic!! My boyfriend loves the nitro cold brew it is one of his favorites!! The flagship coffee shop is located across from The Presidio State Park (the oldest part of Santa Barbara when the Spanish settled back in 1782) and two blocks away from Superior Court Of California County Of Santa Barbara. [Parking]: I was able to find an available street parking spot just a block away from the coffee shop. Apparently several nearby public parking lots are located just two blocks away from the shop (Lot 9 - 931 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 or Lot 8 - 1019 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101) and first 75 minutes = free. [Ordering]: There was a long waiting line at 10:45 AM on Sunday and I received my drink at 11:15 AM. One of the staff yelled that if anyone wants iced or drip coffee then she can assist them immediately (aka skip the waiting line). [Amenities]: The shop has spacious indoor tables as well as outdoor tables (dog friendly). Unfortunately there's only one unisex restroom so expect to wait a long line for it. [Menu]: Simple espresso menu, but probably a good idea to stick with the top three Yelp highlights - vanilla latte, cold brews, or almond-milk latte. *** Vanilla Latte (8 oz - $5.75): While my initial impression of this lightly sweetened drink didn't blow me out of the water, there was no question that it was an amazing cup of latte with subtle coffee aroma. *** My vanilla latte was surprisingly good and it is no wonder why this coffee shop is super popular. Top notch coffee; one of the best I've had so far in Santa Barbara/ Goleta. Got their iced latte to-go. Decor is colorful, fun, and tastefully done. Quick service and friendly staff.
