I brought a large group here from my office this past Friday, 9/28. I chose Handlebar because the vibe is very laid back with a fun party atmosphere later in the night. It's a bit of an "edgier" bar for the people I work with, but knowing me, they understood why I picked it and why I love it so they were happy to venture out of their comfort zones. There was another large party that showed up the same time our group did, so that must have been overwhelming for the daytime bartender who may not have expected such a rush. She handled everyone as best as she could though, and we all managed to have a great time. Shortly after, more staff was behind the bar and everything moved even more smoothly. Drinks were flowing as fast as we ordered them and people were having a blast. As it came time for me to leave, I have to say I wouldn't have left until close had I not had somewhere else to be. We were having such a great time. It was a great experience with an incredible staff who handled what everyone had to throw at them. Even the qualms some people had that evening (things are bound to happen during a busy Friday night at a popular city bar), things went swimmingly. I got the pleasure of meeting Roy who was lightning fast with drink orders and tickets and had a killer personality. Everyone raved about him come Monday morning back at the office, as well as a really awesome bearded gentleman who assisted him behind the bar (sorry---I never got your name if you read this). I know firsthand it isn't easy and not always pleasant dealing with inebriated folks all night, but I have to say our overall experience was fantastic. I had worked with Roy for a few days before the happy hour was scheduled to take place, and he made sure to reserve several patio tables for us, as well as extend drink specials for our group being that there were so many of us. I could not be more appreciative of how accommodating he and the rest of the staff were for our group and I cannot wait to go back. I highly recommend Handlebar to anyone looking for great drinks, a fun patio, and a cool atmosphere in the city. If they see this----thank you again for everything, guys! read more

They are open for lunch, which was a pleasant surprise. The hummus had paprika and was delicious. I had the Russian dumplings which came in a flavorful broth. My only disappointment is they did not have any soups yet prepared. Service was friendly and helpful with the menu read more

Decent beer selection. Need to carry a few Belgium beer in my opinion. The food is odd but fresh. Had the potatoes with anchovies on them... I let the man friend eat that dish while I nibbled on the hummus. Sometimes the music is great, other times there's no live deejay, simply a playlist. This place has a pretty good beer and food selection. The food is definitely different from your average barfood with the Russian twist. The pizza is pretty good especially the chicken and jalapeño pizza. I appreciate that they carry a lot of local beers and they have some pretty good happy hour as well. I give this place a 2 simply because there is good music, unless it's 80's night. That is simply horrible. The door guys are always rude and there is a cover for what again? A cover to drink in a bar... hmmmm? They have one good bartender and the rest of them don't know how to make most any shot you ask for. They are good at opening beers and sometimes pouring them. When the bartender asks me the ingredients for a shot or a mixed drink, it's usually when I leave. Also it doesn't make you a cool bar, because you have a theme. I ride a bike for exercise, not to be cool. Also I think drunk bike riding is just as dangerous as driving. Don't drink and ride people! read more

I went in this past Friday night . It was really loud in the place, I placed my order with the assistant manager/bartender and he had a hard time hearing me. I told him my order again louder so he could hear me. Once I placed my order which was a Cabernet, he proceeded to yell and say very aggressively "No cuz of your attitude" and moved on to the next patron. I was totally in shock and flabbergasted. I didn't know what he meant he couldn't hear me the first time so I said my order louder. I asked for the manager and he told me he was the manager. I left because I was just done with this establishment. I started driving and then I realized that I should not just let this go. I came back and asked a lady who was working the bar what her title was, she told me she was the manager and that the rude one was the assistant manager. I explained to her my experience and she apologized on his behalf, and gave me her contact information for follow up and explained she was very busy as they were the only two working that night. I will never go back at all. I have never experienced being refused to be served in any establishment. I will follow up with her soon. I never got an apology from him either. Customer service was at a all time low that night in regards to the "assistant" manager. read more

We came in for lunch for Dine Out for Life. It was the first time here for most of us. We LOVED it! Decent prices, great beer selection and good drinks. The best part? Joe, our server! I went the the Handlebar for the first time last weekend and I'm pleased to say I've found both my new favorite restaurant as well as my new favorite night time watering hole/dance club. I arrived for a late dinner last Friday, not expecting anything fancy, but was more than blown away by my meal. I had a terrible time choosing just two things from the menu as everything looked great! I finally settled on the solyanka (Ukranian stew) and the sausage blinchkys both of which I've been thinking about since! I love the modern American twist on traditional Russian food. I think the Handlebar's going to be starting a trend here!! Just as I was about to leave to head out drinking at another place, 80's club began and enticed me with a few Blondie songs to start. I wasn't even planning on staying, but wound up being there until the lights were flicked on at 230. I never had more fun at a dance party. So, I went to this bar a couple weekends ago and it was very busy as is to be expected on a Saturday night in this area of town. My friend and I went up to the bar to order some drinks and stood there for at least 15 minutes being ignored by the bartenders. Several female customers came up to the bar after we were already there and most of them were served somewhat promptly while we still waited. Now, I am used to being skipped for drinks by bartenders before just because I am a man, but this isn't the reason I felt it important to write this review. When a bartender finally came over to me to ask what I wanted, I told him how long we had been waiting in a polite and respectful tone, and he kind of just blew it off, which I expected. Anyway, after I got my drink and paid at the bar, I went outside to the back area to meet some friends. My friend, however, remained at the bar waiting for service. What he told me he heard after I had left is what this review is about. The bartender who served me, right in front of my friend (who is white), then said to another bartender, "Did you hear that n***er? He was complaining blah blah blah..." My friend didn't stick around to hear the rest. He immediately came and found me outside and told me what he had heard. Now, being a black man in America, I have had to deal with racism before, but not by someone I was paying to serve me, and usually not so unprovoked. Upon confronting the bartender that had said this, (after waiting another 15 minutes at the bar) he just denied it and blew me off. I asked him if I could get my money back for my drink, which I hadn't even had a sip of yet, and he refused. After pressing the issue a bit more, he turned to me and said, "Fine, get the f**k out of here then." Disgusted and offended, and realizing that I was not going to get anywhere with this person, I obliged and left the bar. I normally don't write yelp reviews, in fact this is the first I've ever written (and I'm sorry it has to be a negative one, not one that sings the praises of great service), but I felt this was important to at least bring to people's awareness what goes on when you voice a reasonable complaint at a bar like this. This incident happened a couple weeks ago, and I realize now that I should have written this earlier, but after deciding at first to not write about it, some time has gone by and I have come to realize that something had to be done about this, even if it is only a yelp review. Needless to say, I will never be returning to the HandleBar, and I advise those of you who care about things like this to do the same. Being from out of town, this has to be the worst experience I have had so far in St. Louis, and I very much hope other bars in the area do not treat their customers like this. read more

The beer selection is good, but the food is only okay. The last time I went, I tried the pork pelmeni, which wasn't particularly memorable and rather bland. Their flat breads are pretty good and there is a good variety to try. HandleBar is a decent place to have beers and appetizers with friends, but I wouldn't go out to dinner there. read more

Megan is not only a great bartender, she's an outstanding waitress. The food is excellent! We started with the pickle board and pimento dip. Dip was great and the pickle board offered some amazingly unique flavors. All very good (especially the pickled apples). I tried the Zavtrak Blinchiki and it was delicious. The others in our group tried different pizzas, and all were very pleased. Excellent variety of local craft beers (raspberry stout makes an excellent 'dessert'). But the best was last, the bill. Fantastic beer list - rarely disappoints. I also usually love their pizza and the patio.

When my friends suggested going to the handle bar while on vacation I was so excited thinking they were taking me somewhere fantastic. Instead when I first got in and asked about the "hand crafted" brew on tap which was all new to me they treated me very rudely and tossed me a beer and that was that. Next I went up to get a round of shots from the bar and the bartender again asks for my ID s second time and I was curious as to why. After standing at the bar for 5 minutes they returned and told me my Kansas drivers license was fake AFTER already carding me and serving me a beer. I was appalled, so my three other friends whom also had valid Kansas license and presented them to the bartender. He was so rude and couldn't admit he was wrong he had the nerve to say ALL of our IDs were fake. All of us in our mid twenties. I suggest not to waste your time at this lousy bar and go spend your hard earned money somewhere else. I have never been treated so badly in any establishment ever before in my life. read more
