My daughter had her Strabismus corrective surgery almost 8 years ago, performed by Dr. Handler. She is 12 now and I just got her volleyball pictures back. The office has some uber strict Covid era policies still in place but Dr. Handler & her assistant Kris are very kind and patient with even the most rambunctious of kids who don't really love sitting still. Also they explain everything clearly & thoroughly so the parent understands all there is to know about their child's vision issues. I am a pediatrician myself and would 110% recommend Dr. Handler (and in fact have sent my pediatrician colleagues who have also loved Dr. Handler)! My daughter has been seeing Dr. Handler since she was 7 months old. We were sent to Dr. Handler for a second opinion by the division chair of ophthalmology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (as she is so experienced and absolutely amazing at what she does), and Dr. Handler correctly diagnosed my daughter (after being told something different from a private ophthalmologist). We now drive all of the way from the Westside to Encino just to see her. Because of Dr. Handler's excellent care, my daughter is now two and a half and sees great. Dr. Handler is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and patient. She and her assistant Chris are a DREAM team and will literally jump up and down to conduct vision exams on babies that others cannot accurately do. I rarely walk out of places and I did at this practice! Not only are the staff not friendly the doctor should not be a Pediatric Optometrist because of her fear of getting sick. After our initial first appointment we couldn't even get a follow up until months out. I am not the person to write reviews like this on Yelp and feel the need to share my disappointment to other parents. My husband and I just had the WORST experience with our two twins boys that are 16 months old today because the boys had mild congestion they would not allow us into our appointment. My husband took off half a day of work and the doctor came out and said she can not see the babies because I circled they have congestion. My babies are not sick. We will NEVER return and will find a new doctor for our babies. What a disappointment. Do not waste your time! Hope this is helpful for you parents out there. read more

Dr Handler is very knowledgable about optometry and the physiological problems that can occur with vision. However, I would not recommend her for any vision therapy related problems for young children. My wife and I brought our 5 year old son for a full visual examination since we had suspicions that he was having a hard time interpreting what he was seeing, although we weren't too concerned about the physical properties of his eyes. Dr. Handler performed her evaluation and gave our son a clean bill of health with no recommendations other than how to clean out any build up of "eye boogies". We just got back from seeing a Developmental Optometrist and he performed many other visual acuity tests on our son that Dr. Handler didn't seem to know about. The results of these tests showed us that yes, indeed our son does have some vision problems and needs vision therapy. I'm so thankful to my wife for not taking 1 physicians advice and getting a second opinion. If anyone has doubt about their childrens vision, don't settle if you're not happy with the conclusion of one doctors evaluation, see someone else. read more

Can't say enough positive things about Dr. Handler and her office staff! My daughter started seeing her at around 5 and is now 14. Having a young child with strabismus is already stressful enough for a mom. Within the first 5 minutes of arriving though, I felt completely at ease putting my child's eyesight in Dr. Handler's capable hands. Every visit was a positive experience for my child and for me. Even though surgery was a frightening thought, when it came time to do it, I trusted her completely and I was right to do so. Besides making my child feel like a Rockstar every office visit, the trip to the surgical facility was no different. Dr. Handler is very thorough in explaining everything and answering every question. She will make you feel as though you are her only patient. Plus she and her office staff complete each other which is comforting as well. I haven't visited during Covid so I cannot speak to that but after all of these years the only trouble I have ever had is never remembering if I turn left or right out of the elevator! read more

I wish I could make this review 10 stars! My son started wearing glasses at 1 and 1/2 years old. Until yesterday, we had no idea exactly what was going on with him. We knew he was farsighted, but we never knew that he had an additional issue as well. Dr. Handler and her staff were AMAZING! They made us feel like we had all the time in the world to ask questions and receive information. My son is still taking about them!! They treated us like gold and made us feel so welcome. We've seen a few ophthalmologists in Australia and California and hands down Dr Handler is the best with kids!!! Our 3.5 yo has been seeing eye doctors since she was 3 months old, and Dr Handler is the only one she will cooperate and sit still for. As a parent I'm thankful for Dr Handler's bedside manner. She goes above and beyond in her explanations of the process and diagnosis (what's happening and why). Something we've never experienced from any other Ophthalmologist. Every staff member we have had the pleasure of meeting has been so warm and welcoming. They are amazing with children and are able to capture their attention and get them to do exactly what's required without any issue. Everything is made fun! We had a great experience with Dr Handler and her staff today! They were all so kind and patient. They made the whole experience fun for my 2 year old, and told us what was going on with every step. I went to Dr Handler for a second opinion as I went to another Ophthalmologist with my 14 month old son. 1: when I called I got a same day appointment... took me 2 months for an appointment with the other doctor. 2: the staff is awesome and very friendly (not like at the other Dr's office) 3: they helped me distract my son and made sure the appointment was just fun and entertaining and didn't feel like a Dr's appointment. 4: after the consultation DR Handler took her time to explain to me exactly what was wrong with my son's vision (which was the number one reason I went for a 2nd opinion as the other Dr just told me my son had very bad eyes and needed glasses when he actually never showed any signs of bad vision). She even showed me how he actually sees things and what are the options to treat him. 5: I was upfront with Dr Handler regarding the fact I had gone to another Doctor the day before and she was very classy and was not pressuring me to come back to her or to use her prescription. I did wait a bit in a room but it is because she does take her time with her patients and I am completely ok with it as she did the same with me. I 100% recommend them, even if they are out of network my child's vision ( and therefore brain's development) is definitely worth the extra $. read more

I can not say enough good things to justify the amazing work Dr. Handler and her wonderful staff have done with my daughter. My 6 year old had a recent eye exam at her school and we were asked to go see a doctor. After seeing another ophthalmologists and being scared to death as he suspected tumors in my child's eye, I quickly did my homework and wanted a second opinion before I make a drastic decision, and found Dr. Handler. She had a look at my daughter and quickly found that it's merely a vision problem ... Absolutely NO TUMORS or anything as such. Just a vision problem on one side of the eye. The professionalism, patience and knowledge she has is a blessing. I took my other two children (4 and 1.5 yrs) just to be sure they are clear, and she made them feel just as special and at ease as she did with my 6 yr old. Hands down, one of the best experiences I have had with a doctor. I brought my 2 month old daughter in for an appointment today. Our pediatrician recommended we see her - in fact he takes his kids to her! What better recommendation than that! Chris, who assisted Dr. Handler was just so sweet and accommodating and gentle with my little girl. Dr. Handler was the same and beyond thorough. She spent a good 15 minutes just looking through my iPhone pictures of my daughter with a magnifying glass to asses her eyes. These two are the dream team. Dr. Handler has seen my 3 children and she is always so caring and loving to the children. She has a lot of patience with them and with us, the parents who sometimes don't understand all the technical terms. Her staff is superb. Dr. Handler has done surgery on one of my children and is now patching my oldest. She's just very generous in everything she can do to help. Dr. Handler and her loving, experienced staff have cared for my two sons' eyes for almost 10 years. Each boy has worn glasses for some time now, and each has improved greatly with Dr. Handler's care. Every visit is extremely positive, caring, and comfortable. Dr. Handler is truly gifted at making little ones feel at ease in what could be a scary situation. She is professional and so talented, and she instills the same qualities in her staff. Her staff have been with her many years, and go out of the way to be courteous and helpful. We would never trust our boys' eyes to anyone else! Over the last few years, we have also appreciated that she has not raised her fees, and is sensitive to the economy and the needs of parents to find affordable care. Her staff works with your insurance to file claims, and we have paid far less for her expert, specialized care than we have for our own adult eye care. Finally, we love that she is only about the kids and their eyes. The office does not even sell glasses, and you will have no icky hard sell at the end of the visit. read more
