I can't express how grateful I am to have met Dr. Dorothy Calvin. She is one of a kind ! And so is her husband Dr. Scott Calvin My daughter has had an on going issue with her eye and Dr Dorothy has gone above and beyond for us. She is professional, kind and never rushes you to get to another appointment. One of the very few doctors who in a way treats you like a family. She wants to get to the bottom of it( if there is an eye issue present ) if you ever have any questions or concerns along the way, she will answer them for you! Without ever belittling you for not understanding medical terms. If there is ever an emergency, trust that they will get your toddler / baby in! Ok I have to admit things started off a little unpleasant as the wait was 6+ months to see her but when you have an HMO in Cali, you know beggars cant be choosers. Thankfully they asked if I want to go on the cancel list, which I requested to be added to and then ended up squeezing me in about 2 months after the initial call. First greeted by a nurse, which asks the general questions then if applicable, is the one which dilates the kiddos eyes (super nice young lady). But the Dr, the Dr is AMAZING!!!! She took so much time to answer every question we had, explored all options and was super thorough. It becomes obvious why the wait to see her is so long, she spent about 4 5minutes with us in the room (and my son had more of an initial checkup, nothing serious). Unless you're dealing with some very time sensitive, do yourself a favor and try her out. read more

Great doctor. She's booked to the gills because she is like only 1 of 2 pediatric opthamologists in Los Angeles who take insurance. She's very caring and gives you information without being condescending and wants you to understand what she's looking for. read more

Dr. Dorothy is fantastic! She is great with kids and it's clear that she enjoys her work. My son had difficulty with an ongoing eye issue that other doctors struggled to help with. Dr. Dorothy has not only helped educate us on the issue, but has created a treatment plan that has been successful. Incredible pediatric ophthalmologist. She had wonderful bedside manner with our four year old and is clearly passionate about her work. She also caught an issue with our son's eye that a different ophthalmologist didn't spot because they rushed through everything. Dr. Scott Calvin brought in his wife, Dorothy, to help get a very precise reading for my unusual eye issue. She had clever gadgets which would also entertain young patients. The prescription they provided corrected a reading problem I've had for years! I am thrilled!! read more

My pediatrician highly recommended Dr. Calvin when my 2 year old's eye started to turn out a bit. A new patient appointment was 8 months out for Dr. Calvin but I scheduled it knowing she was the real deal. I got sooner appointments (one in another state while on vacation) and one with CHLA Encino for a diagnosis and some form of treatment as my child's eye started getting worse, but I kept this appointment with Dr. Calvin and I am so glad I did! She is so thorough, warm, personable, and clearly so experienced and knowledgeable. When she talks about the eye, it is clear that it is her passion. That is what you want in an ophthalmologist. AND she's amazing with kids! We need to figure out a way to clone her, but until then, just know it is well worth the very long wait for a new patient appointment. Definitely get care elsewhere during that time, but save your appointment with Dr. Calvin. Future appointments will not be as long of a wait. read more

Dr. Dorothy Calvin is an amazing pediatric opthalmologist. She was able to figure out my son's eye problem and was able to figure out a prescription for his eyes. My son had been seen by 2 optometrists. Neither optometrist could figure out a prescription for his right eye. Worse than that, the last optometrist said my son's left eye was dominant and that he was too old to help correct the right eye. She told me had his eye problem been diacovered earlier, she could have helped but now that my son was 12 years old, it was too late. I felt terrible that I had missed an opportunity to help my son with his vision. That second optometrist made me feel like the situation was hopeless and that my son would never have 20/20 vision in his right eye. Then I took my son to see Dr. Dorothy Calvin. She was able to find a prescription for my son's right eye and she determined my son was not truly left eye dominant. She really took time to thoroughly examine my son and to explain everything to me. Her clinical judgement and expertise were invaluable and because of her, my son sees 20/20 in both eyes now. Going to list everything I like about this office: - I overhear the staff joking with one another, and that gives me a good feeling about this office as a workplace. Employees have a lighthearted (yet professional) attitude, which is not the case when you're working for a tough boss. So it says the office is a well-managed place where the staff feels at ease. That translates into a feeling of ease for patients. - I heard Dr. Scott Calvin speak to the optician, and he questioned something she remembered differently than he did. He said, "Are you sure? Well, I guess you would know better than I would." This comment tells me that Dr. Calvin shows respect for his staff, their roles, and their knowlege. (And the optician turned out to be right!) Again, a staff that is treated with respect by their boss will in turn treat patients with respect. - Although this office specializes in pediatrics, they also treated my mom, a senior citizen, very well. They were thorough, took their time, were slow and patient, and Dr. Scott asked his wife, Dr. Dorothy, to come in and give a second opinion to verify his diagnosis. Again, this demonstrates an atmosphere of teamwork and mutual respect, for each other and for their patients! - The optician is really warm, friendly, and charming, always with a smile. -This is the most important factor: we came to this office out of frustration for the rude, "we don't have time for you," uncaring attitude we experienced at another ophthalmologist in the nearby area, so that experience underscored the contrast with this office so strongly. That office could not even accurately diagnose the problem -- because they did not have the thorough, patient approach the doctors here do. From Dr. Calvin, we got an accurate diagnosis, and the outcome turned out exactly as he predicted it would. Note that most of the negative reviews here revolve around "I didn't get the appointment time I insisted on." Take them with a grain of salt. Really an outstanding experience here on many fronts. Dr Calvin is wonderful. We were introduced to Dr Calvin in the NICU. My son was born very premature and Dr Calvin was called in to examine and treat our son. He had a lot of serious medical issues and his eye development was just one of many medical issues. Dr Calvin was patient, caring and so very kind. I highly recommend her. We have been seeing Dr Calvin for years and absolutely LOVE her. She is such an incredible eye doctor, so great with the kids, and I truly believe our care would have been very different if we had taken our kids to any other eye doctor. I would refer her to friends in a heartbeat and wouldn't want to take my kids anywhere else. However. For years her staff has been rude, difficult to contact, and two years in a row now we have had our appointments (which are scheduled a year in advance) bumped because her schedule changes. It just happened again, and when her office staff called they were aggressively rude to me on the phone, as if *I* was the one rescheduling! I honestly don't know if the doctor knows just how ice cold and rude her staff are- I'm sure she would be mortified if she did. This is no way to run a business, especially when patients are waiting so long and scheduling so far out just to see her. Hopefully she reads Yelp and can address what is an ongoing issue. As my kids get older, it's getting harder to justify putting up with such a belligerent staff for an eye exam. read more

I asked her when the soonest appointment would be for my daughter She asked me why I would be coming in? My children have been seeing Dr Calvin for many years now. She is thorough, thoughtful and explains everything she is doing and why. We came from a previous Pediatric ophthalmologist who was none of those things. Plan ahead if you want to make an appointment, because she gets booked. I wouldn't even give them a one star! We have been going to Dr. Dorothy Calvin for 9 years and this one time we had to cancel at the last minute because I just had jaw surgery and didn't remember about the appointment since it was made A YEAR AGO! We called to ask them to forgive us and to please reschedule our twins! Instead KATHY the front office clerk says NO that she will add $ 100 cancellation fee to our chart and will not reschedule until we pay the $50 for each child. She was unrelenting and rude and is trying to hold us to what she calls a policy from 2013. Of all the Dr.'s office's we have never ever been treated with such cold, rude and obstinate behavior. Here is what I don't understand whenever the Dr. needs to cancel our appointments they don't have a problem in canceling the patients and rescheduling us so why is it such a problem to give us a one time fee waiver? I will be forwarding this to my attorney and let her deal with this. read more

Getting your child to see her is another thing. She has her clerks cancels your appt with her for her convenience. Don't schedule appt with her on any day that is seemingly a holiday. She will butt you for her own good time. Her office hours are limited. For a working parent and school age children it is impossible to see her. I don't think it's worth a bean. The office is actually at a new location now. Anyway, Dr. Calvin is awesome. She specializes in neurological disorders as the relate to the eyes. Unlike other eye doctors that I've been to, she explains things to her patients. It's not just, "Oh, I'm gonna check your eyes.". She explains what she's doing and what she finds during the examination. She may even go into great detail with her explanations. As a patient, the more I understand the better. She helped me understand a great deal of what was going on with my eyes. She will help her patients in anyway she can. read more

Dr. Dorothy Calvin provided a very thorough vision exam for my child who has a medical condition that may affect the eyes. She was kind, patient and very sensitive to my child who was feeling anxious about some of the procedures. Dr. Calvin took her time with us; asked lots of questions and explained everything she was doing. Yes, the wait times can be long, but this is because she gives each patient the time they need. She is worth the wait. We just brought things to do to keep us occupied while we waited. An early morning appointment is helpful to minimize the wait time. I honestly didn't even want to give this doctor 1 star. Wish I could comment on the quality of care but I never made it that far! This doctor is over booked with extremely long wait times! They told me when I booked my appointment that it could take up to 2 hours to be seen! Then my appointment was turned away after driving over 1 1/2 for $13. I only had $57 cash on me and left my ATM at home and I wasn't able to pay the full $70 up front so they refused my appointment! So embarrassing and they seem to be more worried about the money and not the well being of their patients. Decided not to go back and will be looking for somewhere else to take my son! read more

We had another excellent exam with Dr. Dottie for my 7 year old. Surprisingly, my shy 5 year old jumped into the chair when it was his turn. Then my two-year-old wanted to stay in the exam chair hoping that there was more to come even when the eye exam was over.
