"Where do the locals eat?" is something I typically ask when I'm in uncharted waters. "The…read moreHideout" is aptly named because it's hidden behind the façade of an American Legion Post and flies beneath the radar of folks from out-of-town. But the public is welcome, and it's high time to share this local treasure on Yelp! Oh, this joint is nuttin' fancy. The Post decided to increase its visibility by putting a small sign on the outside of the building. Period. There is a large front room with a bar, and a few steps up is a spacious meeting hall suitable for groups and private parties. Gaming is between the two rooms. The décor (what décor?) is plain-plain but the vibe is friendly and festive. The recently-expanded menu features diner fare and pub grub with a smattering of Mexican and Cajun items. We dined with a group of friends and passed around a few apps. The crawfish soup earned thumbs-up, ditto the colossal batter-dipped onion rings and piquant fried pickles. I had a BBQ brisket wrap; it was bursting with possibly more than 8 oz. of tender and juicy smoked brisket. A red smoke ring was visible and the sauce was just right. My Missus said her burger, served on a rich brioche bun, was exceptional. Portions are huge and the down-to-earth prices include one side. There are several sides to pick from. I had the tangy but overdressed coleslaw. There are two pasta entrées on the menu - "Cajun" and "Alfredo." The "Cajun" turned out to be Alfredo pasta topped with diced tomatoes. Apart from that one dud, which was sent back to the kitchen, the food, service and value exceeded our expectations. Of note, dessert and coffee are not served here (but there's a Dunkin nearby). We gotta return for a Friday fish fry.

Food was good and service was quick, considering that there were a lot of people around downtown for a bicycle race (they also have a walk-up window outside and a lot of the muddy bikers were ordering there rather than coming in). Ambiance is country casual, with rough-hewn wood tables and at least a couple of chairs made from cast iron tractor seats. The memory of Strum's lingered with me for the rest of the day, since I was full into the evening from our tasty lunch and my clothes were also redolent of BBQ smoke!

I would say the food was very good. It was my son and I -- we ordered 2 proteins (brisket and pulled pork), 2 sides (potato salad and garlic mashed, and 2 sodas (served in cans). It was a little different with everything being served in a bowl (we opted for the non-sandwich route) -- see pic. I guess I'm not overall used to having a shredded brisket, but nonetheless, it was good. They only have 2 varieties of BBQ sauce -- one with and one without jalapenos. Both had a decent kick, but the one had a definite jalapeno flavor (not really my favorite). The owner (at least I think he was the owner) was nice and checked in with us a couple of times for anything we needed. I know meat is expensive, but I thought it was a bit pricey for the serving sizes. Our bill for lunch was $40. And, I wish they had a few more sauce options. The BBQ sauce they had was good, but some other options are always nice. Overall, I don't know that this would be a regular stop for me because of the cost, but it would be decent for a splurge now and then.
