Before receiving a BK amputation after dozens of surgeries and years of immobility and misery I went to Hangar for a consultation with hope they would help guide me during the uncertain and scary time that it is to be a new amputee. I scheduled an appointment and upon entering the office I was immediately turned off by the terrible foul smell of old kitty litter and stale newpapers: the kind of old office smell that does not bode well upon first impressions for a new and innovative medical office. When I checked in with the receptionist her day was "just one of those days..." and she went on to elaborate on how stressful her day was to me. I'm not trying to make everything about myself here, but when entering a doctors office to consult with a prosthetist regarding a pending BKA and ensuing necessary devices needed for the ability to WALK again, maybe the receptionist can consider that when she decides to share how stressful it is for her and whether or not she decides to share this with patients she doesn't even know. Lastly, while I felt that the consultation was fair enough and my questions were answered, I basically left the office with a "call us if you need anything!" Well, considering how my amputation was a couple weeks away, I needed a lot! I had no idea what steps I needed to take post-op to even make them my care provider. They could have asked how they could co-ordinate with my surgeon, where my surgery was taking place, the dates, and other points of key information if they were actually serious about offering me care. Since they didn't seem to give a flying F about taking care of me, I took my surgeon's advice and am receiving the most excellent care from a team of professionals at UCSF's mission bay Orthopaedic institute. Bottom line- FELLOW AMPUTEES: FIGHT HARD FOR YOUR RIGHT FOR QUALITY CARE AND EXPERTISE. DO NOT GO HERE. read more
