We rented with Hanging Out for a couple of years and had a overall great experience! They give little gifts sometimes, schedule regular cleanings of the common areas, and have an easy to use portal. They addressed maintenance tickets quickly and easily. We got our apartment on a crazy covid deal, so our rent was raised $300 after the promotional period and then an additional $300 a year later, but even at that price, it was still fair market for our area and cheaper than comparable options. We had to break our lease early because we purchased a home, and they made that process very simple and painless since we found new renters for the place very easily. One thing to note is you may want to schedule your own cleaners when you move in/move out, as to my knowledge, they do not have units professionally cleaned between tenants. read more

I've had some really awful experiences with landlords in Chicago but this is the first time I've never had any issues! When we signed our lease they even gave us the keys a month early which made moving in a lot less stressful. Any time we've had a maintenance request someone has been there the next day to fix it. They hired a cleaning service to clean the common areas/stairwells and always send an e-mail to remind us of anyone that will be on the property. They even drop off champagne on the holidays! Very responsive and accommodating. 10/10 recommend renting from them!! read more

Rob is S K E T C H Y. I have currently been living in Chicago for five years and have gone on countless apartment tours/dealt with tons of realtors and I have never had an experience as unprofessional as my experience with Robert from Hanging Out. It is a huge bummer because I saw great reviews on Yelp and I was not expecting to be treated the way we were. (This is only my experience with Rob, maybe Bob is more reliable). I should have picked up on the red flags before I even got to the showing so I didn't have to waste my time. I inquired about a unit that was in my budget with my start date and I got a response that they don't have any units available. I understand that could be an easy mistake, but what followed was a little weird. I got a confirmation email and text saying that the viewing would be at 6 pm. I was running five minutes late and sent an email, no response. Called the office and got Rob's number telling him that I was going to be five minutes late. He responds asking for what unit? Which was a little off-putting because I received not only an email confirmation but also a text confirmation that we had a viewing for 6 pm. Rob then responded asking to reschedule because he had to be out of there by 6:05 - 6:10. He was going to give me FIVE to TEN minutes to look at a place I could potentially be living at. When you look up red flags to look for when you are apartment hunting, the number one thing is make sure the person doesn't rush you. Even if he was overbooked, which he made it clear he was. That is completely unprofessional. I made it to the viewing, there were 5 other people there. He didn't even ask any of our names. Didn't give us ANY information about the unit. NOTHING. Didn't show us the laundry. I was asking tons of questions and I was getting half responses while he was looking at his phone. No answer about utilities didn't know what kind of locks there were. I felt uncomfortable and rushed the entire time, which is a shame because I actually liked the place. I would never want to work with someone or give someone my money who I get horrible vibes from. When everyone else was looking through the apartment he was also on his phone rushing us. The other potential tenants and I talked after we left and we all felt uneasy about the situation/Rob. read more

If I could rate negative 10 stars I would. They entered my unit TWICE without my consent! Will not respect personal privacy. I am sure this will be denied but I have it on camera. Raised my rent every single year, and got extremely nasty with me over email when I took exception to this (Bob P, the same gentleman who replied to these Yelp reviews). Extremely childish and unprofessional behavior. Pay attention to the poor reviews on this site. No salting during Winter was also annoying and hazardous. Just rented an apartment from Hanging Out. The place is great but Rob was awesome! Very cool and funny dude. Finding a new place in the middle of winter sucks, but he made it enjoyable. Super knowledgeable of the area, you can tell he loves the neighborhood and a no pressure kind of individual. My biggest gripe in my search- were these agents and the pressure tactics they would use to get me to sign. None here. Rob followed up to see if I had any additional questions and then left the ball in my court. LOVED that. I also value that the same person (Rob) who rented me the apartment is also the same guy who helps manage my building. He always a phone call/email away. Can't express how many times I've rented an apartment through an agent who has no affiliation to the property. They lie and are never to be heard from again after you sign a lease. This landlord takes pride in there buildings and it shows with the wonderful customer service they have provided me and the upkeep of my building. I'm 30 days in and any issues have been addressed/resolved immediately. Bonus points for being in the 21st century. As everything is done online, from rent payments to maintenance requests. Simple. Hallelujah! My last management company was a nightmare. Finding a place is half the battle, the other half is making sure your new landlord will provide peace of mind after you move in. I very much enjoyed my Hanging Out apartment and the service revived from Hanging out while living there. all the guys are very laid back to talk to but if you have a maintenance request or need there is still a sense of urgency to get it taken care of asap. I literally made this Yelp account so that I could leave this review - I lived in a Hanging Out apartment in Wicker Park for an entire year, and I can't speak highly enough them! Rob is a great guy, very helpful in everything and his lines of communication are always open. On top of that, he really tries to get to know his renters and it truly feels like he wants only the best for everyone that lives in his properties. The apartment was also great, everything I could ask for and more for a very reasonable price. Work orders were always answered promptly (never more than 48 hours), and the staff that helped out were just as pleasant as Rob to work with. One example in particular - our dishwasher stopped working and was retaining water, so we put in a work order using the online portal. Within a couple of days, Rob had not only bought us a completely new dishwasher, but sent someone to set it up for us, all free of charge. Don't know what more you can ask for! The online portal is great, it's super easy to pay rent and do tons of other things like put in work orders, access your lease at any time, and even purchase renter's insurance straight from the portal. Contrary to some of the other reviews, Rob and Bob were nothing but professional and genuine to rent from. If there was an issue they had the maintenance team out immediately to fix it, they allow pets for a very reasonable price and they're not uppity, judgmental and stuffy like some landlords can be. They're human and they understand life throws curve balls and will always communicate and be there for their people. If I were staying in Chicago I would rent from them again and again! read more

I've been living in an apt owned by Hanging Out for the past 2 yrs in West Bucktown / Humboldt area. I have been so impressed with my experience with them that I felt compelled to write a review. It's not everyday we renters have great experiences with mgmt companies! Rob is very thoughtful, communicative and honest - he's been that way since the beginning. Daniel is usually the one responding to maintenance requests, which are done through a very user friendly portal and he is super prompt / efficient. If I could put 0 stars I would. First, we moved in with ceilings breaking, countertops broken, unpolished floors where every dirt particle gets picked up. By the time I walked from my kitchen to my bedroom my feet were black due to the lack of maintenance the floors had. Also, we had 3 gas leaks within 6 days. For the first one, we called the landlord and they said, "how bad is it? Can you open up a window? Is it bareable?" Umm.... NO!! Why the hell would we stay in a place with a gas leak. Right away we call People's Gas after and they said to leave the building and they arrived within the hour. Then, once people's gas fixed it, they needed Hanging Out to come back to replace the pipe, which they said they fixed the next day, and they didn't. Then, People's Gas came again, saying that whoever "fixed it" didn't know what they were doing and caused the gas to leak again in the same spot after People's Gas had fixed it. Then, People's Gas had insisted on getting a plumber, so Hanging Out decided to lie to us saying that they did, when they didn't and turned out that the gas leak was still there for a third time. After People's Gas came a third time, they finally fixed it. It was ridiculous! Also, when we had the ceiling repaired, the workers decided to leave all the dust particles that were remaining in our kitchen after they finished the job. The dust was all over our food, counter tops, cabinets.... We had told Rob about this when he came over to see the gas leak, and he decided to have the decency to take his fingers and run them across the counter tops, picking up dust and showing us his fingers saying "this is live able. Put in a maintenance request..." WTH. Really? What kind of landlord says that. One that we will never EVER refer to anyone. All I can say, is that our lease was terminated within 1 month of being there and we have never been happier. I would never recommend this company to anyone. read more

Bob is by far the best landlord that my now-husband Todd and I have ever had -- and that's saying something, given that we've lived in a combined more than 20 rental units over the past 15 years -- almost all of which were with very good landlords. First, Bob does a great job fixing everything up before you move in. Our unit (1914 N. Wood #3, where we lived for two years) was in great shape when we moved in, and in addition to being attractive, there were very few occasions when we needed to call him for repairs. My now-husband is very handy, and they chatted quite a bit how well everything was put together (all of this was way, way over my head, but I did think the unit was gorgeous aesthetically.) The only time that I can recall having a problem we needed to call him for was when there were some overly-smart birds who figured out how to make a nest in our bathroom venting, but he shut it down. He's also very affable, and he actually gave us a bottle of wine for some reason or another around the holidays since he was having a particularly good year. Second, Bob isn't a jerk when you screw up. I don't remember the details, but things got a little out-of-hand when I was out of town before our wedding, and the downstairs neighbor complained about the post-bachelor-party shenanigans upstairs. Bob did a good job letting us know that our neighbor had complained, but also wasn't harsh with us and understood this was an unusual, one-time occurrence for a special occasion. Finally, even though we've had a lot of great landlords through the years, Bob is the one who answered the phones when our current landlords gave him a call. We live in an insanely competitive rental environment now -- we relocated to the Silicon Valley -- and when we asked our landlords why they chose us out of all the people we were competing with, they specifically brought up his glowing recommendation. Thanks Bob! We would have definitely renewed our lease if we had been lucky enough to get to stay in Chicago, but alas, life brought us to California. We would definitely rent from Bob again if we were in Chicago. read more

Hanging Out Properties was one of the best property management companies I've ever had in Chicago! Bob was easy to work with during our move-in. Whenever there were issues with our apartment, he had the fastest response time of any landlord we've ever had, I don't think we ever went more than 6 hours without a response. We had a kitchen fire in our unit, and they were extremely helpful and understanding during the fire and renovations. They even gave all of the tenants in my building a gift and card for Christmas I've been renting in Chicago for 10 years, and never have I received a gift from a landlord! I have mostly had positive experiences with my landlords in the various places I have lived (Cincinnati, Long Island, NYC, Chicago), but Rob and Bob have been the best. From the moment I began working with them when searching for a place, they have been extremely helpful and accommodating, forthright and respectful of privacy, and organized excellent communicators. I am legitimately sad to be moving out of my apartment, which is a wonderful value and location (only moving because I am moving to Seattle). Paying rent and submitting maintenance requests online has been very convenient, and the requests are addressed promptly. I hardly ever write reviews, but Hanging Out is worthy of this and so much more. They are the best landlords we have ever had by FAR, and my husband and I lived in a lot of different city rentals over the years. They are responsive to requests (usually same day, even when it isn't urgent) and take great care of their properties. They were so accommodating when we thought we might need to sublet, too, when our family expanded. Anything that was needed with the apartment, they took care of it for us without any hassle. They go above and beyond, even coming out at odd hours and weekends for what other landlords would consider small things. The handyman, Daniel, was also incredibly helpful and kind! He can fix almost anything! The only reason we left is that we bought a place of our own, and honestly, we miss renting from Bob and Rob so much! What we will always treasure about Hanging Out is that they actually CARE about their tenants. They are nice people and show their appreciation to their tenants. They even sent us a basket of cookies when our son was born as well as a card! How many landlords have done that?! Rent with Hanging Out. You won't regret it. Hands down the best landlord I have ever had. Bob and Steve is not only extremely nice guys, they also fix things right away, are very understanding and keep their buildings in good shape. So far we have had some minor things thats been needed to be fixed or replaced, and they have literally fixed it the same night or the day after. Renting with Hanging Out has been extremely EASY. Our other landlords in Chicago have always been rough. Hanging Out always responded to our emails/maintenance requests extremely quickly (submitted through their simple portal) and their maintenance guys are always super nice and friendly (and professional/quick) when they stop by. The main owner, Bob, responds to e-mails with questions and issues very quickly and their "handyman," Rob, is equally responsive. Hanging Out is a company run by a bunch of untrustworthy and narcissistic people. If you would like your wife, brother, daughter, son to live in a building where they don't care about your safety, THIS IS THE COMPANY TO RENT FROM. I would never rent again from Hanging Out. Period. Me and my roommates left our unit after a month because we had 4 gas leaks that they failed to fix due to negligence. Gas leaks are VERY serious, but they told us we were never in any danger. Because blowing up I guess isn't dangerous to them. This management company failed to hire a professional plumber to fix the gas leak but lied to us saying they hired one and lead us to believe we were safe. We WERE NOT. We have physical copies of People's Gas forms as documented proof. They are narcissistic by telling us that "all the other tenants like their management." Their excuse by telling us why they didn't repair our gas leaks: "we are human and we make mistakes." There is a difference between making mistakes on accident and doing them ON PURPOSE. Their terrible management is also reflected by their comments on here. Whatever bad review left for Hanging Out on YELP is posted because people are just telling others they weren't satisfied, but instead of apologizing and using those reviews to learn and improve by not making the same mistakes again, Bob will leave comments on the bad reviews to make the company seem different than what the person reviewed it as, essentially telling them that they were wrong. No company is perfect, but this company is not trustworthy and very dishonest to their tenants and should not be in business at all. Bob, do not comment on this review with your excuses or to tell people to only look at the good reviews and not this one. Because everyone has their own opinions and you don't have the right to tell them their experiences and opinions were wrong. read more

I am not sure how these guys get away with a Rule that is against City Tenants Code. All Tenants in the City of Chicago have till the 5th of Each Month to pay thier Rent. However, these guys claim if they receive their money any later then the 1st it is considered Late. Not according to the Rental/Tenant Guide, provided by the way Through City Hall for Free. read more
