I bought my Hoka Clifton's in the pastel blue and orange colorway from here about a month ago but just now getting around to writing this review. The people working here clearly know their stuff. When I came into the store, I was wearing a pair of OnClouds with self-lacing system. The man helping me asked me how I liked my shoes. When I mentioned I'd had them for a little over a year, he told me that On has discontinued that style, which was a surprise to him as it is a customer favorite. Hopefully, he'll be in-the-know to give me a heads up if the company decides to bring it back. I have signed up for Hanig's mailing list to be notified of the sales that take place. This is one of the few brick-and-mortar locations that carries Ilse Jacobsen shoes. Happy to support a local business! read more

I am writing this review on behalf of my Mother-In-Law, who doesn't write reviews but wanted to make sure the world knows this place is fantastic. She frequently shops here and will continue to buy shoes, sandals and boots here. The reason for this particular review now, is that a recent purchase put Hanig's and the salesman Walter into a new category of fantastic. This past fall she bought new winter boots. There were warm and comfortable and were great for a few weeks, until we had a big snow followed by thawing that proved the boots were not actually waterproof. It is really hard to tell how well boots will do in Chicago winter, and being waterproof is crucial for keeping feet dry while walking around. When she went back to the store and told Walter the boots weren't water proof, he was very polite, concerned and attentive. He helped her return the boots and exchange them for new waterproof winter boots. Few places have so much good stuff in a small store and almost nobody has that kind of service - making a customer whole after a disaster. This experience really proved how valuable Hanig's and Walter are, and solidified the reason to keep purchasing footwear from here. read more

I have both shopped and browsed at this store, and I can attest there is exactly one helpful and personable salesman, who just happens to be an African-American gentleman, every single time. I have bought many pairs of Thierry Rabotin shoes at Hanigs over the years. Recently I bought a pair on final markdown. They were too wide and I worried that I might slip and fall in them. They were unreturnable, so when the store asked for a review, I shared my disappointment with the shoes. Within one hour the people at Hanigs called and gave me a store credit. Oh, toe shoes! If you are looking for an awesome pair of shoes that just so happen to have separated toes, this is the place! I stopped in here during my visit to Chicago because I wanted to try on the Vibram FiveFingers. They have an awesome selection of them. Additionally, the salesmen are all really friendly and interested in helping you find something you love. I tried on a pretty, ultra-feminine lilac pair and they let me wander around the tower in them to check out how they felt on hard ground since the store is carpeted. I was smitten with my newfound footgloves. I couldn't help it. I had to buy them despite all the funny looks I got from other customers. After returning to Seattle I decided I wanted another pair for me and a pair for my bf. I called and they sent them to me the next day which is extra impressive considering the limited supply and how hard they can be to come by out here. read more

I finally bit the bullet and decided that--fashion be damned!!--I want to train with Vibram five-fingers. But at first I really wanted to try them on and figure out if they would work for me. Enter Hanig's. A quick search of Yelp told me they offer a wide array of Vibrams. Came in on a Saturday around 1pm, and was promptly greeted by a salesman. When I told him what I was looking for, he was incredibly helpful in explaining the different models, especially the ones for running. I proceeded to try on just about every model in the store, and he stuck faithfully by me while I hemmed and hawed over which ones to get. (Indecision is my middle name). I appreciated the no-pressure sales and relaxed atmosphere. They let me run around in the tower to get a feel for the shoes, and while I took a long time to finally purchase, I never got an whiff of impatience. The other salesman helped out as well, as they all seemed to own a pair, so they let me know which models they wear (and for what activities). The price for the Vibrams is on par which what you find from other retailers, the Vibram website, and even Amazon. Score. So thanks Hanig's--when I need another pair of Vibrams, I'll definitely be back. NOTE: The store is located on the North side of the Hancock building (Delaware street side) at ground level. My family knows I'm always looking for the next really comfortable, yet hopefully cute pair of shoes. There are actually stories about my shoe shopping. That admitted, I found a shoe store that I loved, in Chicago. It had brands that I had never tried before. Specific new find~ Fly London! I admit i'm on the short side, yet I have trouble balancing on heels. Problem solved! Platforms! Not really crazy, but a 2 1/2 inch heel made wearable thanks to a 1 inch platform. I bought one pair while we were in Chicago and then ordered another pair in a color they were out of stock in. Nice bonus, free shipping. When I came home i wanted to see if I could find this brand nearer to me. Yep, Nordstrom had the brand. However, I saved around $18 a pair buying them at Hanigs and having them shipped. I'm thinking I have a plan for future purchases at Hanigs! Sales staff was very helpful and knew their shoes!!! read more

Boo hiss on Hanig's customer service. I was in last weekend and while they were busy, there were also 2 or 3 workers milling around the cash register at any given moment, and not one person even glanced at me or said "1 sec". It's a shame b/c I typically have good experience with Hanig's. On top of this, I wanted to try on vibram's and barefoot shoes and there were four or five other people trying them on at the same time. In my experience, having multiple customers trying on the same product is easier than running in five different directions. While they are expensive, they have the selection I like. Great comfort shoe store, great selection, great service. I came in to try the Vibram FiveFingers, but am not a convert yet. I did however get a pair of "barefoot" shoes that don't look like I am wearing some kind of crazy scuba glove on my foot. Yes, barefoot shoes that are actually cute do exist, and you can find them here! A lot of beautiful, well made shoes in here. They also seem to focus on comfort, but without sacrificing style. Prices are on the higher side. But, I guess you get what you pay for. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and super helpful. I even got a tip for a chocolate-malt-pit-stop on the drive home from Chicago, but we changed routes and did not get to try it out. read more

To set the stage, I think I am one of the only women on the planet who truly hates shoe shopping. Like, I loathe it. If left to my own devices, I will wear a pair of shoes or snow boots into the ground...and then keep wearing them for an embarrassing amount of time as they fray even further while I hmmmm and haw about having to go shoe shopping for a replacement. I am a creature of habit. If you guys hadn't noticed, Chicago has been extremely snowy this winter...and my three-year-old "professional" work attire snow boots were so terribly busted that they were leaking. So pathetic. And then I broke the zipper after having one last (triumphantly stubborn) fight to get them on one morning. After a rave review of this place by my husband (yes, my husband has to MAKE me go buy shoes), I decided I would check it out. He went with me and said, "Just talk to my dude". You know, because every good shoe store story starts this way. Ike did not disappoint. It was a crazy-busy day, and he took time to figure out what I liked about my old boots and helped me get set up with a new pair (just in time for more snow storms). Painless. Perfection. Ike. I am only being honest that it might be another three years before I stubbornly replace this particular pair of snow boots, but the moral of this 5-star review is that I will go back to Hanig's for other shoe purchases in the meantime. This was the worst, most hostile, aggressive behavior I have ever experienced from employees in a store. Two identical pair of shoes got wrinkled linings and inner linings. I owned them less than 6 weeks so I wanted a refund. Although they offered to repair/replace the linings, I still requested a refund believing the shoes to be constructed from poor materials. When I did not agree to a repair the manager verbally bullied me while two other salesmen stared me down. The manager said they couldn't send the shoes back to the manufacturer. He was so hostile I walked away and sat in one of their chairs to figure out what to do. Then a second staff member approached me and shoved a repair are ticket at me as the manager left the store. Yes, they are charming while they are selling and do know their merchandise. read more

My boyfriend and I were shopping around before Christmas while waiting on dinner reservations. We walked in to this shop and needless to say, I'm wearing new boots. The staff is extremely attentive, friendly and most of all...knowledgable about what they sale. Our staff member (I'm the worst and can't remember his name) was phenomenal. They were a bit busy but still greeted us and asked for specifics on what we were looking for. Anything I asked or needed help with didn't seem to be a problem at all. I bought 3 pairs of Thierry Rabotin shoes 3 months ago at the store on Michigan Ave. One pair developed a defect. I wrote an email to the store, not counting on getting a response, and I not only got a response, they said to send the shoes, and they would repair them or replace them. They replaced them. I am thrilled and will promote and buy more shoes from Hanigs forever! read more

I have been shopping at Hanig's for more than 20 years. It is the only place I buy shoes for two reasons. First, because they specialize in comfortable shoes for men and women. Second, because it is one of those rare stores where the staff truly knows the merchandise and how to fit shoes. And they never push you to buy. Everyone that works there has been there for years. The quality of the staff is a reflection of James, the manager, who is warm and welcoming and goes out of his way to find sizes at other stores, add inserts to shoes as needed, etc, making every effort to ensure I get what I want. And they even have trunk shoes twice a year where you can customize you shoes! It is a true pleasure shopping at Hanig's. Why go anywhere else. read more

About two months ago, my boyfriend and I stopped in to get him a pair of Ecco shoes. They're pricey, but comfortable & professional for him. The sales staff we talked to were really polite, professional, and knowledgeable. They seemed to take the customer service side of their job very seriously, unlike other retail shops that have similarly priced products, but absentminded sales staff. I usually don't spend a lot of money on shoes, but one time I was in a bind (i.e. only pair of sneakers fell apart) and they were the nearest store. The sales people were very helpful (but not pushy) and when I left without buying (to check out the shoes at the opposing North Face store) they were very polite. I went through a lot of trouble to get to this store by 7 on a Friday (during Christmas shopping season). I walked through an ice storm in an air cast all over chestnut looking for it. They locked their doors 20 minutes early despite me and 2 other customers peering in and trying the doors. I fully intended on making a quick, easy purchase that day. Hanig's Shoe store out of the Chicago area is fabulous!! I have ordered two pairs of shoes from them and the customer service is the best I have experienced. One pair of shoes cost $40 less than the identical pair in a store in the DC area and the other was the lowest sale price on the web as well as stores - and there is MORE - since I live in another of state there is no sales tax (saving an additional 10%) and no shipping charge. Both came quickly and in perfect condition. The shoes carried at Hanig's are from the best lines for comfort, style, and qualify and I am grateful I found such a good source to satisfy my shoe needs. I've been shopping at this store for 7 years. Always had good service but the last visit topped them all. Cheniece Mosley went above and beyond.. I didn't buy a thing this time but she gave me 30 minutes of her time and treated me as if I had bought the store out. Customer service may be a thing of the past in some places but not this store. I like good looking shoes but have wide feet and have to be careful about Plantar fasciitis and the staff at Hanig's has always been great. Sometimes I see a shoe I think I want and they steer me towards shoes that will better meet my needs. I've sent friends here and they like it too. read more

I have glowing things to say about Hanig's. They stock high quality footwear, but it's the people that are of a truly exceptional caliber. I was visiting from out of town and with a little time on my hands and their sale going on, I spent quite a while trying on different shoes. Ike was perfectly happy to bring out multiple pairs and to give me the time and space to reflect on which discounted pair was best for me. Then I spotted a pair that weren't on sale and for a lark, tried those, too. Well, those felt and looked fantastic. I went for those, ultimately, and while they were well out of my usual price range, I know those Thierry Raboutin Tao's are going to be a huge upgrade for my wardrobe and I feel confident that they'll last me for years. Ike was a gem--easy-going, knowledgeable, affable, patient. He shipped them to my California address and saved me the considerable sales tax. And then there's my Hanig's epilogue adventure. At the airport, I realized I'd left my prescription glasses in a restaurant the night before. Yikes! I called Hanig's. Was there any way someone could go pick up my spec's and include them with my shoe shipment? Steve was great on the phone, great to walk over the restaurant and retrieve them, and fantastic about calling me back to let me know they were nestled among my new shoes (currently jetting across the country). By the time I'd landed and turned on my phone, there was a reassuring voice mail message from Steve, letting me know that all was taken care of. And this on a Sunday, too. I have bought perhaps a dozen pairs of Thierry Rabotin shoes there for a prince's ransom. I returned a few months ago because one pair, though correctly sized by their helpful salesman, would not stay on my feet. They put in inserts and I tried again. Still the shoes -- which basically lack enough structure to stay on -- fell off my feet. The manager could not have been less interested, saying they had been worn too much (maybe 6 times after the inserts had been put in.,) Sad because it's hard to think of spending that kind of money with store that doesn't stand behind it's product. Fortunately, I know my size and shop elsewhere. AT $500/pair, I expect more service. read more

I took my mom here yesterday since she has a hard time finding comfortable shoes. She was a nurse for 40 yrs and developed problems from having a job that required her to mostly be on her feet. It sounded like a perfect store to bring her to, and she was very excited to see the shoe selection. I was very disappointed however by how rudely she was treated by the salesman who was helping her. She would have definitely bought a pair of shoes yesterday, however his rude behavior prevented that. I even overheard him say to another salesman that my mom was being a "pain in the ass". I've been looking for some comfortable and cute black walking shoes for months. I tried Hanig's on a referral from my mom, who lives in the area. I usually have trouble finding shoes that fit my foot, which is a women's size 11 and pretty wide at the front because of bunions. I had several shoes to choose from in my size, though, and the salesman Walter Perry was very nice and helpful. It was an enjoyable, low pressure shopping experience. read more

Dropped in as the window looked interesting ... a guy came out from behind a back door, still chewing his lunch and with grease on his hands and asked if he could help ... So the proverbial "first" impression was not excellent. The rest of the interaction went downhill from there ... we weren't necessarily in buying mode but shoes are (mostly) bought on impulse and the chewing guy did not steer us down the acquisition path ... probably even away from it to another chie store with better service and nicer manners ... didn't his mom tell him not to speak with his mouth full? The other assistant in the store, a nice black man, stayed away from the scene (probably he was more junior and commission would have been involved). I would not put Hanig's towards the top of my shopping places and neither should yous! read more
