Hanilul Kitchen is a Somalian Food restaurant that serves some pretty unique and delicious foods. All of which is Zabiha Halal. We were greeted right away by a really nice gentleman who answered all our questions about menu items and helped us order. I tried the drink called Bissap which was made from hibiscus flowers and mint. It was very refreshing and went well with the food. We tried the Somali Sambusa appetizer which was a filled crispy pastry pocket with shredded seasoned beef, onion and seasoning blend. They were really good. We then ordered the Chicken Suqaar which was thinly sliced chicken breast, onions, exotic spices with red and green peppers. It was served with a fragrant Somali rice. All the food was delicious, service excellent and ambience was fun and unique. Don't be scared to try this place. You'll be surprised by the food. The menu is simple but the food is prepared fresh, has unique spices (not hot) and will satisfy your appetite! read more

We ordered via grub hub on yelp and were so excited to try this place! However when we went to pick it up the restaurant not open and there was a sign that said permanently closed for business. Doors locked. Chairs up. The works. Still took my money though so I had to file a dispute with my bank. Super frustrating. read more

Both the chicken suqaar and the sambusa were nicely seasoned and tasty. They were accompanied by flavorful sauces, one yogurt based and one spicy. So the food--or what we had of it--gets five stars. Perhaps it's a sign of the restaurant's authenticity that it is staffed by people who speak almost no English, although that poses some inconvenience. Asking if we could bring in a service dog took several attempts to be understood. The menu lists no prices!! When we asked the waitress how much the chicken suqaar cost, she did not know. She got a handheld point-of-sale terminal and looked up a price of $16. Although the menu explains some items, it lists mandazi, chappati kaykay, canbulo, caloley, and anjero with no explanation. If "Anjero Ethopian" are "Ethiopian sourdough crepes," perhaps they have some kind of filling? What is in the "Anjero Ethopian"? The waitress said she did not know. What is "mandazi"? The waitress said she did not know. Of course, it's probable that she just did not know what we were asking, though we did point to the item on the menu. Once the food arrived, the waitress never, ever came to the table again. So getting a refill on water was out of the question. The entire time we were there, we were the only people eating in the restaurant--though a couple of individuals stopped by to pick up to-go orders. Her restaurant appears to be an unassuming African market from the outside, but inside you discover a stylish boutique with intricate wood trim, gold accents, and stylish decor. Formally known as Rahma, it has been reinvented as Hanilul Kitchen, simple and delicious Somali comfort food. For starters order the Sambusa! It's like an empanada stuffed with delicious spicy ground beef. For the main dish you have to try the Suuqar with chicken or beef. The chicken has a similar sweet flavor profile to Indian masala. Definitely order some Mandazi sweet bread to sop up the flavor of rice and Suuqar! It tastes like a sweet naan bread. For an after dinner drink try the Shaad Adays spiced tea with milk(it's like Chai) paired with Mandazi. This place is absolutely fantastic. Every dish was so flavorful and a joy to eat. We had sambusa which was super crispy and full of filling, served with a spicy green sauce and a creamy yogurt sauce, chicken cooked in Somalian spices, and lamb shank on rice. While I was in Kentucky I was looking for something simple to eat. Hanilul has tons of chicken, beef and goat options. The chicken plate I got had chicken, onions, peppers, rice and lettuce. It was really good and had tons of flavor. Employees at the restaurant were very nice and checked on me frequently. If I'm ever in town again I'll be returning. read more

A small oasis after a long drive! The owner warmly greeted us and was so hospitable despite us walking in an hour before closing. She described the dishes to us and we all settled on something different in order to share. The goat was my personal favorite, although everything was excellent. The sauces that accompanied each dish were exquisite and the rice was beautifully seasoned with aromatic spices. We will definitely go out of our way to revisit this gem on in future travels! read more

Best sambusa I've ever had. Very cool interior I didn't expect and the server was incredibly kind and helpful. Loved it.

Me and my husband came here looking for something new and it was 100% worth it. Our waiter was a sweet heart and let us taste the specialty drinks in a small cup before committing to one which landed us on the DELICIOUS hibiscus drink. We got the nakaqo which is like a crunchy wrapping around seasoned mashed potatoes and bellpeppers around a hard boiled egg and it was AMAZING. They have this homemade sauce that is spicy and tangy and lemony and it is so good we took some home. I got the goat and my husband got the chicken suqaar which both came with a bed of the best rice of my life. The chicken was beautifully flavored and moist and the goat was melt in your mouth amazing. Although we joked about the outside looks like they are gonna steal your kidneys the inside is beautiful. You can tell they took their time to make an amazing experience. The staff was so nice and ensured we liked everything. When my husband went to pay he had a conversation with the owner and he was an awesome guy. I love this place and will be going back. read more

A cozy little restaurant sharing a building with an African market, Chef Lul welcomes you to taste a surprisingly range of Somali, Ethiopian, and Senegalese dishes. We had the sambusas--crisp and full of richly spiced beef; goat (with bones) in with a thin bread to scoop up the flavorful sauce, and roasted lamb with cardamom rice. The green sauce on the side added fragrant spiciness to the dishes. All the dishes were excellent and very different. Lul and others (family?) were created a warm, friendly environment.
