So so disappointing. I saw some social media love for this place and decided to give it a shot. Ended up with more reasons to not go back than it was worth. Chili is pretty decent. I can see how cincy chili fans would like it. I was really looking forward to trying the gyro. It was fine but not very impressive. Not a fan of when places are too lazy to actually grill the gyro meat after shaving it off the spit. The size was disappointing too. Probably some of the smallest gyros I've ever had. More like a gyro snackwrap than a proper gyro sandwich. Value was ridiculous, too. Far too overpriced for what we got. I like the old school, relaxed feel of this place. There are old photos on the walls. The employees here are really nice and pretty quick at getting your food out to you. I am a born and raised Cincinnatian, my husband a Cincy chili convert. He has been trying all of the chili places he can in the greater Cincinnati area, so while driving through Kentucky we decided to stop at Dixie Chili. Ordering at the counter is very convenient and by the time you slide your tray down the line your order is ready and waiting for you. Lots of cheese graced our 3 ways, they looked well made. My only complaint is I did not care for the chili. Tasted more like a coney sauce to me. Guess I really am a Skyline girl. But I suggest you try it for yourself. read more

How disappointed we were. The vegetarian chili was an embarrassment for any restaurant. The standard chili is good, but tasted old/reheated. The hot sauce was sweet and not "hot." The restaurant was in need of cleaning. After visiting Skyline and Gild Star in same city (Florence), Dixie was a noticeable step down. A shame. I ate there during the covid 19 scare not long after dining rooms were reopened. I was a bit uneasy that none of the staff preparing and serving food bothered to wear masks. Although I grew up in northern Kentucky I had never been to Dixie Chili before today. The concept is the same as other Cincinnati chili restaurants with the addition of fresh minced garlic for the 6-way. Hubby ordered the regular and I had the small. The small was enough for me, but the fresh garlic was overpowering while eating, and afterwards! The cheese on top was plentiful, as were the chopped onions and the beans, but the meat seemed a bit skimpy. This location is the one I grew up on in Erlanger and it really has not changed since I was a kid. Quite simply, the BEST coneys in Cincinnati. I can debate their 3-way vs. others too, but the coneys win hands down every time. The chili here is just more consistent and has more and better flavor. And as always, this meal calls for a Red Creme Soda to wash it all down, I really can't have Red Creme with any other meal. This is the only chili that I like in this area. Chili has a great flavor. I really enjoy their chili cheese fries, tastes great, good portion size and they're waffle fries which holds the chili much better than regular fries. I also recommend the Greek fries. No, this isn't gourmet. No, this isn't the cleanest place in the world (although I've never called it dirty or filthy). No, the food doesn't consist of the highest quality ingredients. Yes, the food is delicious and consistent, whether it's for a meal on your Tuesday lunch break or the end of a drunken stupor on a Friday night (it is Erlanger, so you better have a DD!) Yes, the meals are cheap. Yes, you can get free refills. Yes, this is the Cincinnati encapsulation of, and twist on, Americana...except you can't find this restaurant in Cincinnati, as the best in Cincinnati chili is actually across the river in northern Kentucky. Don't piss off the ladies behind the counter. They are quintessential northern Kentucky/Cincinnati Scots-Irish blue-collar types; helpful, attentive, chatty, focused, but can out-man even the most alpha men you know when they're provoked. Rough around the edges, but delightful. And, with all this said, this is what brings me to Dixie Chili nearly every time I fly into and out of CVG; I visit the Lexington area 2-3 times annually and fly into CVG because of lower airfare costs. Dixie Chili has become something of a staple, a tradition, during my visits back to the region. Like I said, this is (Greater) Cincinnati's encapsulation of, and twist on, Americana. The only other place in Greater Cincinnati that I've found that makes eating Cincinnati chili an all-out experience is Camp Washington, and you don't want to be around Camp Washington after dark. read more

Currently, my exhaustively researched chili rankings are organized like so: 1) Camp Washington, 2) Skyline, 3) Dixie, 4) Gold Star, and a distant 5) Empress. Now, with Dixie so far down, one wonders why I'm giving it five stars. Well, the devil's in the details on this one. See, Dixie Chili may not have the best actual chili in town, but it does have some advantages the others sorely lack. First and foremost, waffle fries. I cannot possibly overestimate the value of waffle fries. Something about them just baffles my senses, so that I think they're somehow vastly superior to regular fries (but only because they are). Second, garlic. The six-way chili comes with chopped garlic, which as far as I know is unique to this particular chain. And as we all know, garlic is the reigning king of garnishes. Finally, there's vegetarian chili. I never eat it, because I'm a mammal, but I'm told it's quite good. And again, I haven't seen a similar offering at other places. Dixie actually boasts a fairly comprehensive menu for a chili joint, and a slightly more endearingly retro decor than other places (looking at you, Gold Star). There's gyros and greek fries, soups, pies, chicken fingers and spaghetti for the kids, and something called an "alligator": a hot dog with a dill spear, mayo, mustard, and cheese. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but hey, it's there! Add to this the convenient drive-through at the Dixie Highway location, and the fact that you can get an adequate meal for five bucks, and we have a place that I can count on if I feel like Camp Washington is just too far away that day. read more
