Had the usual trepidations when calling around for a plumber the other day...what is this going to cost me and do I really have to see the "crack"? Called Hank and he put me at ease as to be honest he couldn't quote without seeing problem unlike all the other guys that wanted a two and half "Frank" minimum. He was right on time as promised and not quite what I expected. An unassuming gent with a great personality and everything he needed right there. He quickly diagnosed the problem one and gave me a fair price, figuring this guy was on the up and up, I let him work on a 2nd problem too, he said since he was here already he'd take care of the other one for a twenty spot. What a deal. He explained to me the issues that caused my two problems and how to avoid them in the future. He was honest, neat, clean and quick. Terrible experience with Hank's. Called, explained my job (running new plumbing for a bathroom remodel) and set up a job walk later in the week for 10:30am. I get a call at 9am that day. Angry guy at the other end of the line says "Where are you?" I explain our appointment was at 10:30. He mutters about how he was hoping to meet earlier, then says he wrote the time down wrong. I explain I'm still 40 minutes away. I meet him at 10:30, and he's clearly still angry about not being able to meet earlier. First thing out of his mouth is "There's no parking on this street. I can't find parking, I can't work." Honestly, I'm ready to turn him away at that point, but show him the job anyway. I explain again how we want him to run new plumbing for a tub and sink. I show him drawings. He sits there for a second, looks at the drawings, then laughs and says, "YOU CAN'T PUT A BATHTUB HERE!" I ask him why. He says, "There's no plumbing for the tub!" I'm like, "Uhh, buddy, that's why we called you. I explained this, literally, 20 seconds ago, and on the phone when we first talked." At that point, I told him we were finished and showed him the door. Waste of my time and his. He might be good for snaking a clogged drain, but I would not trust this guy to do any actual plumbing work. If you hire him, expect plenty of attitude with your plumbing. read more

Hank could not have been more gracious and on time, when he showed up. He knew my location, having worked for the neighbor next door. Thank goodness he shared that info with me. After looking at the home homes that needed gas shut-off valves and telling me all kinds of issues that might result, how he couldn't guarantee that the job was feasible. Drama upon drama. The price would be $900 for both--- if he could even find a valve and additional piping ect. Something seemed off; the neighbor confirmed this and fortunately I am having quakeprepare do the job, which is standard for a total of $483. Another pleased customer. I had a complicated plumbing situation that was holding up repairs in a 100 y.o. house. After learning the hard way that our shut off valve was routed strangely and also had a leak, a bathroom pipe's threads had completely disintegrated in the valve fitting so that no replacement pipe could be put fitted and all repair work had to be put on hold until the corroded pipe could be replaced. Hank came over a few hours after I called, looked at the problem, gave an assessment and a price upfront, completed a tricky job within an hour, and got us back on our feet within 4h of my call. read more

He never called her when he got to the site, called me to say he'd try to ring the doorbell and then left (we don't have a doorbell!). Hank was able to come the same day to help fix my slow draining bathroom sink. Was a good communicator and quite professional. He pulled out a wristwatch that I had lost years ago, said that was a first for him! He then drew a picture of what my sink plumbing looks like and what should be changed so it could work optimally. I had a toilet that wasn't flusing properly and I thought that I needed the pipe to be snaked. After calling several plumbers and only getting answering machines, I called Hank and HE ANSWERED HIS PHONE. He was in the middle of another job, but he promised that he would come by and take a look at my problem that evening. Hank arrived at the agreed upon time, and immediately went to work trying to find the problem. After removing the toilet and checking the pipe, he determined that there was nothing wrong with the pipe, but the problem was the toilet. Hank was very open and honest about what the options were and how much each option would cost. I ended up going to Home Depot the following week and buying a new toilet and had Hank install it for me. He was friendly and reliable and I was very impressed with his work. He guaranteed his work for one year. In fact there was a small leak around the base of the toilet, and I called Hank, and he immediately came back and installed a new wax ring to fix the leak. Great experience with Hank...dealt with a leaking pipe behind a sink valve (outside the wall), and also caught a poorly-aligned U-pipe under the sink. We actually called him in the middle of the night when we had the leak flooding our wall, and he advised us on best way to stop the flow (house shut-off plus bleed a sink on lower floor), then came out in the morning and solved the problem quickly and for a reasonable price. I also had a bad experience. He was punctual and came same day. But similar to others, he had an attitude since the beginning, saying he was not sure he could fixed the clogged drain because of difficult access and all kind of issues. He was complaining about the old faucets, etc Then, he said he broke the rusted screws so he had to go buy new ones and charge me a second visit, same fee, only to replace the screws. I was surprised he did not have standard screws with him or he did not charge a follow up rate. I wont call him again. read more

It's been a few months but a review is due to the best plumber I ever met. He came out at 7 am on Thanksgiving. Did not over charge us. Was ethical, honest and clean, got my kitchen sinks drain working again in time for me to throw a party at 2pm the same day. I can not express my gratitude to him.. Oh and he answers his calls. Hank has been to my house 4 times in the past 2 years. He always has an attitude, and difficult, when asking questions, very defensive, but I have been understanding. BUT, This time I called him to fix a leaking outdoor faucet that was shaking when I turned the water on for the hose, which I first called him for 1 week before BUT he denied that there was a problem, Even tho I showed him the wet ground, and ran the hose. Later, When I removed the hose, it was dripping alot of water, so I called him back. After he turned the main water off and back on, the toilet made a loud noise when I first flushed it, from air pressure, and NOW does not fill with water in the bowl. He denies that this is a problem related to the recent changes and wants to install a water pressure regulator. He is not willing to come and look at the toilet or take any responsibility. Agree that Hank is a real find! Hank has done work at our house to fix a severely leaking (and ancient) faucet that other plumbers had "fixed" before without resolving the problem for more than 6 months. Hank assessed the problem and said that, although we needed a new faucet, he wasn't sure if he could extract the rusting pieces in the wall that would allow him to install one. He said he could either take the chance, which could potentially fail and then we'd have to open up the wall and go through tiles to fix it or we could just do the same temporary fix the other plumbers had done. We opted for him to work on it as the others had, but it began to leak again soon after. He came back without charge and we decided to have him try to pull the rusty attachments out, he succeeded and was able to install the new faucet without having to tear up the wall. He responds quickly to calls and texts, and makes every effort to fit us into his busy schedule. As other have mentioned, he is very fair and honest, and gives you a good idea of what could go wrong with old plumbing before he starts working. Highly recommended!! read more

Hank is a real find! We were out of town when our tenants called to say their water heater broke and was filling their living room with water. I found Hank in the Berkeley Parents Network, and called him from Oregon where we were working, at 9am last Friday morning. It was chaos, since we had to ask our cat sitter to wait for him, give him the combination for the garage lock (where the heater is) , tell him where the spare key was for the tenants apt, and trust him only from the reviews we read. He not only responded right away, but by 1PM (4 hours later!), the job was done, and according to our friend who is a contractor, he did a fabulous job. I am so happy we found him, his price was reasonable, he is really responsible and a consummate professional. He's a gem!! read more

I used Hank who was referred by my contractor. Hank ran gas lines correctly (thank god!). He hooked up a water filtration system below my sink and told me if there were any problems to contact my insurance. i found this odd. Late that night in the wee hours, the line dislodged and flooded my kitchen. What a mess, it ruined the brand new cabinet,the wood flooring and things in the pantry. We immediately called him at 7am, he arrived a few hours later and said to call my insurance because he didn't have any! We told him he was responsible and the replacement costs =2500.00. Many months passed and he refused to pay until I contacted his bondsmen to file a complaint. Finally he payed back most of the money and said that was it. This mistake cost me 500.00. Mixed reviews... he was one of few plumbers that agreed to come give us a bid on a Saturday, so that's great. But, we arranged our whole morning to be home at 11 when he was supposed to come... and he didn't show up. We called him at 11:30 and he said he'd be here in 20 minutes. 50 minutes after that (an hour and twenty minutes after our original appointment) he arrived, and he clearly didn't actually want to do the job that we had (which was challenging), telling us that everything we had was wrong, and he couldn't guarantee the work. So, 2 stars for showing up on a saturday, but not more than that. read more

Hank told me he is located in Concord and the check should be made out to Hank's Plumbing with an address in Concord (2770 Calpine Place, Concord 94518); however the phone number Hank uses (1800-411 4265) is the same listed for Hank's Plumbing located in Berkeley; my review petains only to the Hank that responded to my call and that states checks should be made out to Hank's Plumbing. I requested his services for repair of a water leak and faucets; he showed up three times (I called him and said not to show up on the fourth time); he initially told me the leak was from missing grout in the tile shower and when finally convinced that we hardly ever used the shower cut one of the pipes to replace it; after the new pipe was installed; it immediately leaked and he conceded the new leak was from the poor sodering (sp?) job he did; after again cutting the pipe and installing a new pipe the leak was evidently repaired; he then attempted to fix one of the faucets and went to the hardware store to replace the stem valve; he purchased the incorrect stem valve and still tried to install it in the faucet (Oakbrook valve purchased for Am Standard faucet) then said he had to leave and said he would return in two days to finish repairs; before leaving he attempted to repair upstairs faucet (slow flow of water);( faucets and ped sink installed within last 2 years); claimed he could not take steps to repair unless I guaranteed he was not responsible for undisclosed damage that might occur from repair; I called and cancelled his final appointment after finding that valve correct valve could have been easily purchased. I heard great things about Hank and was really pleased that he could respond quickly to do an in-person estimate. We had two issues that needed to be addressed. The day he came back to do the work, however, was a disappointment. He was 45 minutes late and didn't seem to remember our phone conversation about what we'd decided we wanted him to do on the first issue. As a result, he didn't do what we asked. I apologized first for any misunderstanding and he moved on to look at the toilet, the second issue. After a few minutes, he called me into the bathroom and chided me for my toilet apparently not being clean enough to meet his standards (uh, hello? you're a plumber...). The toilet was cleaned the day before. After calling my cleanliness into question, I noticed that he did not replace anything he took out of our kitchen cabinet , left dirty crap in my sink and a Home Depot bag of trash on my kitchen floor.
