Why does Hannaford's seem to have limited inventory and selection in every department? It's as if they're trying to justify higher prices on many items by offering a tightly curated collection of groceries. I found Hannaford's competitors to be head and shoulders above them, particularly in the produce department. I bought vine-ripened tomatoes and shallots because we were there and to cross last-minute Thanksgiving purchases off our list. We checked out at the self-service department and received help quickly when we were stymied weighing shallots. Still, the oddly empty and sterile vibe of this grocery store was unsettling, especially the day before Thanksgiving. read more

Does anyone at this store know how to bag groceries? Raw meat and ready to eat food doesn't go together. Soap and food don't go together. Square pasta boxes don't go with round glass jars of pasta sauce. It rips holes in the bag then there goes your glass jars. Keep squares with squares, round with round. It should make sense. Not be too heavy. So frustrating. This is probably the 20th time. I don't get why it's so difficult. I'd rather bag my own groceries. read more

I go to Hannaford 99% of the time. There's a handful of employees that should be recognized for their kindness & great attitudes. Thomas is number 1. This man has an aura that shines & a beautiful smile to go with it. He's engaging & funny. Great guy. The Bakery Manager ~Missy. I pray I've got her name correct. She's super sweet. I always make sure she hears me say "hello"!!! She comes out to have a welcome chat or to assist me with what I need. She's a sweet young lady. Congratulations on your new Management Position!! You deserve it. She's a lovely young lady & never fails to say "hi", to maintain her pleasant nature, kind & helpful!! Jim does the stock or other in back. He is a sweetie & we always have a good talk. He rides his electric cycle to work. We relate on a few subjects. He walks out with me to ensure I'm safe & helps me with my bags he's a wicked good guy!! Thanks Jim!! Lastly there's Karen. She works FOH. She is sweet & helpful & kind!! She's a cool lady & helpful. These employees deserve kudos!! I have to do this. It needs to be mentioned. It's on a low note:/ Many see me & know I am in the store. They know me by name but can't be bothered saying "hi"! I ordered using Hannaford to go the first time you use it. It's free other than that. It's $10 unless you spend $125 nobody really wants to spend $125 unless they're doing like a weekly grocery shopping but if you only want one or two things, not worth paying $10 for but their products are good. Hannaford brand products are very good. The only complaint I have is toilet paper. Hannaford's one ply brand is horrible. Other than that I have no complaints. read more

We used the HTG service during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike the services of other stores you are not able to approve or reject substitutions before paying. So you either need to trust them on their substitutions or select NO at the time of ordering. You also do not have a clue what the removed items are until you start going through the items to tick and tie. 12/30/21 at the front entrance of hannaford there is a huge sign literally in your way stating that masks are mandatory per exeter town ordinance. This evening, during my brief visit I saw at least a dozen people without masks, NOT ONE hannaford a employee said a thing to these people. Last year at Hannifords, I was misinformed when ordering a seven pound angus beef cut, trimmed and tied. I was quoted one price which I checked on three times before pick up and at pick up the price was $5 a pound greater, because of the custom cut. I ended up paying over $35 more for that cut of beef. This year I ordered the same cut of angus tenderloin of beef (5.25 pounds). When I unwrapped it this morning to prepare for roasting tonight, I found the silver strip still on the beef. I called Hannifords and asked why, when I asked for a trimmed and tied beef why the silver skin was still on it? I was told I had to ask specifically for it to be removed. I told them I asked for the same cut I had last year and the silver trim was gone and why would anyone want to pay extra per pound to have the roast cut trimmed and tied for roasting and only to find the silver skin still on it? I was, to say the least, perturbed! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I will find another "go to" market for my custom cut tenderloin of beef in the future. Ok, I regress. Their thanksgiving sandwich was mediocre because of the lack of gravy. However, I gave them a second chance. Today I got a chicken club sandwich, and it honestly was pretty good. Shopping at this Hannaford's is a real pleasure. It's a gorgeous store, well organized, clean, bright. The produce always looks great, no complaints. Nice bakery and deli. This is about 20 minutes out of my way, so don't shop here all the time BUT always stop in if I'm in the area. This week, they have the best prices on several things I need, so definitely worth the trip. And the story that Market Basket has better prices? Not true. Many times I've found better elsewhere. I've shopped at Hannaford in Exeter for years. I was there tonight and checking out. One of the women bagging in a different lane came over and started fussing at the woman who was bagging my groceries, saying she wasn't putting enough in the bags. She had a terrible cough and proceeded to open all the bags that were complete, cough in each one and all over them without covering her mouth, and grab other groceries off the counter and shove them in the bags. I said something to the Service Leader who was running the cash register and she just apologized but since I had just paid seemed unwilling to help. I left and went back to try to speak with a manager but got another Service Leader who said he'd look into it but didn't seem to care. It's just common courtesy to cover your mouth with your arm and not hack all over the fresh food that a customer just spent a lot of money on. Ask customer service anything or make a suggestion you'll be met with a blank look and quick response of "sorry can't help with that". Hannafords in Exeter has zero customer service. They have what they call "express self check out but allow for customers checking out over 20 to 30+ items consistently, so not worth sbopping there for that benefit. The grocery store was beautifully arranged and many of the staff was pleased to locate things for me around the store. To say the least my experience was FANTASTIC, that was until I arrived at the check out. I was waiting in line (which was down the AISLE) and there were only two lanes open. Willing to wait my turn I watched the cashiers provide exceptional customer service. When it finally got to my turn I was greeted a very friendly young man who was pleased to check me out. Although the wait was long I didn't mind. But when I looked over I saw two grown women standing around and talking while the kids worked hard to get people through quickly and efficiently. When I took a closer look I read their name tags. Karen and Deana. I was disgusted at how little they did to help out the kids. I am not impressed. Fix this Hannaford's and get workers who are willing to do their job. It's not appealing seeing employees stand around and blab their mouths! I asked the cashier if it was normal for these two to stand around and they confessed it was. Not to mention the minute one of the kids got a break they asked them to go do a task they could've easily done themselves. It's concerning that this store is okay with leaving two women in charge who are unwilling to do more than stand and talk. I've had some issues with the Hannaford To-Go service, but manager Bryan is extremely caring and addresses any concerns to make your experience a good one. This store has some really bad policy not to take back an expensive dry good that was found to contain certain cancer causing ingredient, Splenda, which my wife did not understand upon purchase. The Item was brought back next day and refused. Very poor policy when it comes to this as the container was not opened or damaged in any way. read more

Prices like Whole Foods, quality generally lower than Market Basket, which is why I tend to shop Shaws across the street. Tried to order a birthday cake for an 80 year old today and the bakery staff was clueless, not able to fulfill my first two requests (nothing exotic, a picture on a cake which they claim was copyrighted and second choice, a cake from THEIR own catalogue which "wasn't in stock," whatever that is supposed to mean since I was ordering the cake a week ahead of time). The woman at the bakery then asked me for my "second choice," which was the unavailable cake in their catalogue, so I just looked at her, and said, "Three strikes, you are out," and wheeled my 80 year old buddy in his wheel chair back to the car and to Shaws, who by the way, were happy to help me order a birthday cake with the design I actually wanted in the first place. I am actually almost grateful, since as other reviewers here have noted, Hannaford's overpriced produce is often moldy and the bakery goods are sometimes stale, and I have also had to look over expiration dates with a hawk's eyes since they are infamous for selling past the sell date (no discounts!). read more
