My bike in front of Hannaford with a slashed tire.

They suck! The deli people are all old men with long beards and do not wear bear nets. Gross. Also they are rude. I had my motor bike tire slashed outside there store and they refused to look at the cameras. F them. I will never shop there again. I had to fight to return all my food since I had no way to bring it home. I had to take a bus and walk back with tools to fix my motor bike. The store treated me like I was the problem. Screw them. I came in to buy food. In fact I might go back there and buy the exact same things.

Local maple products for a fraction of the cost

Whenever I come up to Vermont or Western Mass to visit friends during Sugar Shack season, I conveniently stay at the Colonial Motel and spa across the street from Hannafords. I love to support local businesses but sometimes things get super expensive.. especially when you have to bring gifts home for friends, family and co-workers. I always stop in Hannafords at some point during my trip to stock up on things to bring home. This last time around i found a bunch of local maple syrup (almost half the price of the sugar shacks) maple candies, local honey and I even picked up Vermont maple bread. They are open until 10pm, never crowded at night, which is great, especially when you forgot last minute items or snacks for your trip. The store is super clean, prices are reasonable and the staff is always friendly. And, (unlike the supermarkets by me in NY) they sell wine! But best of all, they are stocked with local maple products at a fraction of the cost which is why I love this place.

    Snowy store front.

We just had an overnight at the Colonial Motel in Brattleboro, VT, and my sister in-law recommended Hannaford's for some drinks and snacks.

We knew we were soulmates when Indian was both our favorites, and our first date way back in the stone age was at a wonderful Indian restaurant back in California (also sadly closed--tough times for restaurants in general, but especially for niche ones). Then, out of the blue, we found out another Indian restaurant just opened in Keene...and a Yelper mentioned that Indo-American Grocery in Brattleboro, who also owned the defunct India Palace, still did take out! You can bet your bottom bippy that we got takeout the very day, a Wednesday. They don't have the full menu that India Palace did, but it's not bad, and it's only available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Which is a heck of a lot more than we *were* getting, so we're ecstatic. We tried the vegi pakoras, which are spinach and onion fritters. Heavy like hushpuppies, but very tasty, especially with the chutney they added to the takeout bag. Samosas were big and very greasy, needed salt to perk them up. The saag paneer was the best I've had outside of California. Long-cooked, well-spiced (but not too spicy, for the heat-phobic) but again, needed a dash of salt. Channa masala was very, very, very good. Possibly the best I've had, period. The kids loved it with the basmati rice, the mister loved it with the diced onion chutney (and he is NOT a channa fan, in general). We can't wait to go back. They don't make their own bread, but it's an Indian grocery; there's all sorts of frozen and shelf-stable choices if the rice isn't your starch of choice. Parking is a little tricky on that side of Elliot but I had no trouble finding parking just around the corner.

Aldi isn't like that; it's compact, easy to navigate and has pretty much everything you need. A little bit about Aldi first... It's a German owned company. They also own Trader Joe's. Think of Aldi like a Trader Joe's, but a bit more bare bones. Their business model to run lean: They don't have people collecting carts, they don't provide you with disposable bags, they don't sell a lot of name brand stuff, their stores tend to be on the smaller side, the shelves are usually stacked boxes and they only sell the most frequently bought items at your typical grocery store. There's no deli counter, butcher or seafood counter; everything is prepacked. Just about everything in this store is a "house" brand. But let's face it, it's all made by the bigger companies; just labeled differently. Everything I've tried in this store tastes exactly like the name brand. The boxes/packages even look similar in most cases. You save a ton of money buying the off brands; we've cut our grocery bill in half after shopping here for about 4 months. Before you go: Bring reusable bags Be ready to bag your own groceries after checkout Bring cash or a debit card; no credit cards (Credit cards charge a fee at the terminal) Bring a quarter so you can use a shopping cart (It's refunded when you return it) One of the nice things about this store is it's very easy to get around. It's laid out so you can move around quickly while getting what you need. At most, I've seen maybe three employees working here. They've all been friendly and helpful. Even with a few people ahead of us, checking out has been efficient. You unload your cart, they scan everything, reload it and then you head over the bagging area and pack it up. If I could nitpick one thing: The hours. They don't open until 10AM on Sunday. I'm sure they did their homework and found the peak hours of shopping. However, if you want to get out early and get your shopping done, you'll have to wait. Overall, this is a great store. It makes shopping easy, fast and you're going to save quite a bit over the other establishments.

The low prices are clearly coming at the cost of literally everything else about this place.read more

The lot was small but many people were coming in and out so we didn't have to wait long to get a parking spot or outdoor seating. There are two shops: the deli and market with different vibes and items inside. The market is a quick shop with some snacks, drinks, coffee, and knickknacks. The deli is where the hot/cooked foods are at with some other specialty foods. The food was overall ok, nothing noteworthy. The main attraction is their Mac and cheese that had been circulating my IG feed. Don't think it's life changing but the shops have curated selections of local goods that are reasonable priced to get some last minute treats. Pass on the general tso(?) and the potstickers in my opinion unless you're really craving it. The desserts looked amazing and would definitely get one next time

We were able to get a spot in front with no issue, but I imagine that this was because it was a week day. We chose the Mac and cheese and the maple pulled pork. Both were worth the hype in my opinion. The mac and cheese was super creamy and paired well with the tender pulled pork. The baked goods were nothing to write home about. Maybe we just chose the wrong items? We tried: Oatmeal cookie - good, but not amazing. Chocolate chunk/ peanut butter cookie - stale as heck and basically inedible. I always am leery of saran wrapped cookies that are out on display because its impossible to know if there are actually fresh. The giant stacks of cookies were too enticing to pass up on. The chocolate cookie we purchased was definitely not fresh at all. $3.29 down the tubes - lesson on saran wrapped cookies learned (again). Carrot cake whoopie pie and original whoopie pie - both tasty, but the cake was too thick for my personal liking. We sat in the small outdoor seating area to eat. This was a nice little reprieve from the car ride.
