Front- Chicken with mushrooms; back- steak

Appears to be called Bistro Amsterdam now. Stopped in on a Wednesday night and luckily they were still able to seat us without a reservation. We actually tried to call for one but couldn't get through. Glad we came in person because it was an excellent meal. I had chicken schnitzel with mushrooms and it was soooo delicious and cooked perfectly. Ate every single bite. My dining companion had a steak and he was also very pleased. The waiter was very welcoming and the atmosphere was comfy with cool decorations. Will definitely return on my next trip to Amsterdam.

My brother and I went here after spending the day exploring in Amsterdam. They had classic decor and played Dutch music. The food was full of flavor, and the waitress/kitchen made sure to accommodate my food restrictions! Highly recommend

Meatball stamppot and one with mushrooms, onions and cauliflower so good!

My husband and I went for a meal. We both had a stamppot. When I said I had a pork allergy they said it was not a problem and would make my meal with just veg. Delicious! My husband had one with meatballs and said it was also great. Very friendly and super nice people running it!

Kudos to Yelpers Dennis M. and John L. for leading us on this Dutch food quest! I absolutely fell in love with this place. The employees and the patrons all broke out into song after song providing wonderful entertainment throughout the night. It was all in Dutch but I liked the singing all the same! On to the food. We got the traditional Dutch Stamppot. It came with a meatball, mashed potatoes, gravy and bacon. A hearty comfort plate. Mom's Stewed Beef with meat, potatoes and red cabbage was homey and tasty as well. We really liked these two dishes. The Dutch steak was good but at the end of the day, it was a normal small steak with fries. Our beverages paired well with the food. A few shots of the traditional Dutch liquor Jenever and a few local brews from Dorpsbrouwerij de Pimpelmeesch. Perfect on such a wet and cold evening. It's not a Dutch feast without some Dutch desserts. Their poffertjes came out hot and fresh, loaded with powdered sugar. Delicious! The Dutch apple pie crust and filling was nicely done. Tante Leen ice cream with eggnog and chocolate sauce was decadent. We were all stuffed but we ate and drank everything! The waiters kept us liquid all night (flat, bubbly or spirited), filling and refilling our glasses, then left us alone the rest of the time until we needed something. In the US, we are used to waiters checking up on us and waiting to pick up the tab. But in Holland, they don't do that until we specifically ask for it. It really added to the family/comforting feel of the place which I liked. We had an awesome evening! Good food and drinks. Great company. Free entertainment. We ended up closing the restaurant down after a 2+ hour dinner. I highly recommend trying Bistro Bij Ons out. We will definitely make it our stop the next time we are in town.

    The house wine is good!

On the hunt for a traditional Dutch dish we asked a couple of peeps we met at a Yelp event and they all seemed to be in agreement that this is the spot we should visit. I am glad we listened! After visiting Anne Frank's house we strolled the canal snapping photos, but for some reason it felt like the temp dropped 20 degrees. We were FREEZING. It was time to eat (and drink wine). Just a block or two from Anne Frank this is the PERFECT place to come and grab some traditional dishes for any tourists in town (yet, still good enough that the locals love it!). Walking in the place is small, and the friendly server/owner (?) greeted us and let us choose a table. As we sat down she asked if we were cold? Still had our coats and hats on as we sat down. Yes, we were freezing! She smiled and took our orders. WINE...we will start with some WINE please. As we sipped on the red stuff, layers of clothing came off. The ice in my veins began to melt and my skin no longer felt like it was pricked with needles. Yes...this is nice. At that moment I got to really enjoy the coziness that is this place. It's decorated with various traditional items such as clogs and Black Pete (I did some research) which is apparently part of their culture, but for Americans can be a bit shocking as it's what looks like dolls in black-face. So we got down to the grub. Both were recommended dishes. 1) Pea soup - Whoa! Any ice left in my soul melted into a pitiful puddle of water when I took my first sip! It was pea soup but with a different flavor profile than you might be used to and it comes with toast (?) with some raw meat that looked like bacon. It was good! 2) Stramppot - THE dish to get when going dutch...no, not splitting the bill, but rather grabbing some Dutch grub! A mountain of mashed potato with sauerkraut underneath. I don't think I have ever had sauerkraut. Then there is a puddle of gravy in the middle and a sausage sticking out of it. *CAUTION* when you are photographing this dish be careful the angle you take the pick at as it could look like something completely different! Aside from the appearance this was delicious! The flavors blended well (once again a totally diff spice/taste profile than what I am used to, but still great!). Filling, and it felt like it was good old comfort food (which our friends later confirmed as this is indeed comfort food.) Good enough to warm your soul! PLUS - Free WiFi! This was great for us as we didn't have service and getting on WiFi was the only way we could check into businesses on Yelp (sad how addicted I am to checking in/seeing updates!) but this was a nice break to get online. The server warned us - she would give the password but we still had to talk to each other! Not just be on our phones. HA!

Dutch Apple pie here is not to be missed!

DO NOT MISS THE DUTCH APPLE PIE! This bistro has incredible character. The food is reasonably priced, but is exceptional quality. The owner, Carla, keeps a mix of modern and classic Dutch music and treats you like (fun) family and is INCREDIBLY welcoming to customers. Amazing food, fun atmosphere, and the best decor!

So glad I came here for Diner! This place has a great authentic to Holland menu. They have an outside seating area allowing you to watch the water taxis pass by, and the view is great. I wish I got a view-side seat, but I couldn't so there's no photo to prove it, but I promise it's worth a stop. The staff are very friendly and openly knowledgeable about the preparation of each dish, and gave honest opinions about what to try out. The dish I ordered was amazing! The beef was obviously slow roasted considering how tender and moist it was. And the vegetables and potatoes were just right! It actually surprised me how quick the food arrived, and how hot and fresh it tasted. The portion was a little light for my preference, but I was about to finish and have a couple of cold beers. Prices were totally reasonable, so please stop by next time your in Amsterdam!

Eating here felt like we were in a Dutch family home. The inside is lit in red with family pictures and Dutch nostalgia on the walls. We had a true Dutch meal and didn't spend a fortune on dinner. I recommend making a reservation because this place can get packed at peak times. PROS: Pan fried mussels with onions Farmer's chicken with mushrooms Dutch experience

Dutch comfort food in a cozy vibe. The food was simple... but great, I expected New York Dinner level food.... but it came out better than expected, the wait staff (there were only 2) put in a great New York Hustle...I expected a much longer wait. Not bad!

And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.

They didn't quite communicate with each other about our need to split the check a specific way, but it worked out in the end. We enjoyed some cocktails and beer (ranging from 9.50 Euro to 12 Euro), as well as the Pork Belly and Pickles to start off (21.50 Euro for 300 grams). Tasty way to start the meal. The three of us shared our mains and enjoyed what we had. The Favorite Ribs (24.50 Euro) were flavorful; the L'Incroyable 300gr (Ribeye; 34.50 Euro) was good, but our least favorite of what we ordered; the Le Cannibale Royale 170gr (burger) was super tasty. We also enjoyed some frites (4.90 Euro) and some delicious Mac n Cheese (6.50 Euros). Good time and good food!
