I stopped by Hapa Food after spotting malasadas on their menu online, but once I got there, I could not resist and ended up leaving with a mix plate as well. As soon as I walked in, the restaurant smelled amazing, so I knew I was in for a good treat. I ordered the garlic shrimp and garlic chicken mix plate with a few regular malasadas. The garlic shrimp was pungent, packed with flavor, and very delicious. It was prepared in a way that reminded me of the food trucks I have had in Hawaii. The garlic chicken was another highlight--super moist on the inside with a nice crispy exterior. The mac salad, unfortunately, was a miss for me. It was really runny and did not have the traditional mayo-based flavor I was expecting. The malasadas were good, but not the best I have had. They were on the denser side and I think they could have been fluffier. I also regret not getting them with a filling! Came here with my Yelp friend. It had been on my list forever, and I was so happy to finally try it. It's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, and I've probably passed it a gazillion times and never even noticed it was there. My friend had called the day before to see if there was anything gluten-free on the menu. They were so helpful when we showed up. They had remembered her call and could tell her exactly what was gluten free. This is a very casual order at the counter kind of place. The dining room is simple, but that's okay because the focus is on the yummy food. They have single plates and double plates on the menu. I got a plate that had kalbi and kalua pork. It was served with white rice, macaroni salad, and kimchi. It was amazing! The pork tasted Smoky and delicious, the kalbi beef had just the right amount of sweetness to it. The macaroni salad was also perfect. I got quite a bit of food for my money. I was able to make it into two meals because there was no way I was going to finish it in one sitting. I really like Hawaiian food, and this one is so much better than some of the chain restaurants. It's slightly more in price, but it's 100% worth it. We sat and talked for a couple hours at least. This is our favorite spot for Hawaiian food. All their food is really good and the service is always really friendly. We've enjoyed everything we've had but my favorites are the kalbi, poke, hurricane chicken, and the garlic shrimp. The poke is always fresh and never tastes fishy. Their kalbi plates have a lot of kalbi and it's always cooked perfectly. The inside is a little small and it's always pretty pretty busy so keep that in mind if going during peak hours. Orders typically take around 30 min to be ready so plan to order accordingly. Definitely give this place a try, you will not regret it. Could've been a little more pleasant but it was already busy 5 minutes in to them opening so that may have contributed. Also, if you dine in, don't sit at the tables toward the back.
