We were able to replace the sides with more rice at no extra charge for the plate which was really nice. Honestly, it was way too much rice, so next time I'd just omit the sides altogether if I was to reorder this. The mini katsu was more than enough as well. Each piece was perfectly crispy. I'm giving this place a 4.2/5. It's pretty good for a Hawaiian BBQ spot. I got the Teriyaki chicken regular plate with all rice. The chicken was really good and cooked pretty much perfectly. It doesn't have that "char" to it that Hawaiian's cook it like (if you know, you know), but it was cooked almost perfectly imo. The rice wasn't a true Hawaiian sticky rice, but close enough. It almost had more of an Asian texture to it. But it was still good. There was a lot of food, of which I'd expect from a Hawaiian spot. The teriyaki sauce was pretty tasty. It wasn't the best teriyaki sauce I've ever had, but it's a lot better than Ono's Hawaiian BBQ (their chicken teriyaki is trash!). The service was good and fast! The inside was clean and tidy. Was it the best I've ever had? No. But it's good enough to share it with my friends, invite them to go, and go back myself. I'll need to try the chicken katsu and bbq short ribs next time. read more

Food Quality & Portions: This was my second time visiting this location, and I'll say the food quality is definitely better than L&L. Portion sizes are generous, and everything we ordered tasted fresh and well-made. We got five plates and three musubi, and while the total came out to $185, the pricing felt fair for the amount of food--but just barely. Customer Service: Unfortunately, the customer service didn't match the food. I placed a takeout order and stepped next door to grab drinks while it was being prepared. When I came back, there were two bags on the counter, stuffed to the brim. I politely asked if napkins and katsu sauce were already included. Instead of checking or offering help, the staff member just pointed at a self-serve station and said, "No, it's there." When I asked if they had chopsticks--since the self-serve area was out of both forks and chopsticks--she walked away and disappeared into the kitchen. No response, no follow-up. I ended up having to flag someone else down from the kitchen just to get basic utensils. For an order of this size, it was frustrating that none of the sauces or utensils were pre-packed, especially considering four of the plates were chicken katsu, which obviously need sauce. Convenience & Packaging: The takeout bags were so tightly packed that there was no room to fit anything else--not even a small container of sauce. So I had to stand there, assemble multiple sauce containers by hand, and try to juggle everything around, which really should've been thought through better when packing the order. Most other Hawaiian plate lunch places will pack utensils and sauces for you, or at least offer to put it in a separate box or bag. Dine-In Setup & Amenities: They do have a few indoor tables, with seating options for both small and large groups. The bathroom is basic but available. Nothing fancy, but functional. Bottom Line: The food is solid and portion sizes are generous, but the service is what keeps this from being a 5-star experience. If you're paying nearly $200 for a large takeout order, you shouldn't have to chase people down for sauce and utensils. There are plenty of other Hawaiian places that offer just as good food and treat their customers with a little more care. I may return--but I'll keep my expectations in check. read more

My family was visiting the Phoenix/Glendale Arizona area and stopped by Big Island Hawaiian BBQ for a late night dinner on Wednesday evening. This restaurant was right next to our hotel at the Hampton Inn Phoenix/Gilbert location. There is ample amount of parking available. Inside the restaurant, their is spacious amount of table seating available. It was a little bit chilly inside the restaurant. The menu consists of different offerings such as plate lunches, salads, chicken (bbq chicken, chicken katsu etc..), beef (BBQ beef, beef short ribs), and pork (Kalua pork). My family and I decided to pick a few items off of their menu to try out! 1) Chicken Teriyaki with rice 2) Kalua Pork 3) Chicken Katsu The wait wasn't long before our order was called, approximately 10 minutes. Everything was delicious! My son really enjoyed the chicken teriyaki. The Kalua Pork is some of the best that I've had in several years! The meat was tender and juicy! I would order it again from Big Island Hawaiian BBQ. The Chicken Katsu was yummy! The portion size was quite large especially for the meals being inexpensive. My wife has been craving Teriyaki for a while. And I'm always up for it. I saw Chicken Katsu on the menu and felt like gambling. The problem with Katsu is whenever I've had it out, other than Shimogamo, it's been a massive disappointment; dry, the batter falls off, just lack luster. Big Island did NOT disappoint. My goodness, that was the best Katsu and Teriyaki we've had in a long time. It's sad that we've lived here for so long, and passed it probably 1,000x going to Costco, and never stopped in (even after seeing all of their amazing reviews.) But not anymore. We will be back.
