As a local, Ravinia resident, I'm glad Happi Sushi picked the corner spot for the block after 2 years of being available as new construction. It gives the neighborhood more life and aesthetic. Service was quite relaxed but very friendly, so no complaints. Very Nice, enjoyable Al fresco dining at the corner. Miso soup was enjoyable and the tempura shrimp was delish. The Japanese Ramune soda was unjustifiably priced / expensive at $6 +Tax + tip for a 200ml soda - that needs adjusting even after account for inflation. New Bathrooms are fresh and clean, and I LOVE they are ALL GENDER. However, they really need a paper towel dispenser in there close to the door, otherwise impossible to open the door handle without re-soiling hands after washing. While the fish and avocado is fresh enough, the rice is not great with gummy texture and spongy nori on the inside. Overall, I want them to do very well in the neighborhood and will continue to patronize them. read more

We ordered from Happy Sushi the evening before Thanksgiving. We were out running errands, so we stopped in to place our order thinking we would grab a beer across the street while we waited for them to fill the order. It turns out they are extremely busy and there was a 50 minute wait. So we placed our order then went back to pick it up. The staff were extremely friendly. We ordered a variety and they kindly packaged the rolls for each person together. I thought their prices were fair and the quality was good. We ordered several rolls, a sashimi combo, some sides, and a bento box. I do think in the future when we order for pick up that we will only order cold dishes. We live about ten minutes away, so sadly all the warm food was cold. My filet steak was ordered rare, but it was cold and dry by the time I was able to eat it. I can't wait until we can dine at the restaurant again so I can try some of their hot dishes at the restaurant. I am glad that Happy Sushi is doing a good take out business despite the challenges of Covid. We will keep supporting out local restaurants as much as we can. read more

The rice cracker roll is very good! The bibimbop is just terrible. They dump a lot of clumps of iceberg lettuce into it, poor quality vegetables and very little meat. I realize that bibimbop is a Korean dish and this is a Japanese restaurant and that may be the reason. Nevertheless, they could not have made it any worse. read more

I've ordered take out and for pick up from this restaurant several times. Today, it was highly disorganized. I placed my order without issue and gave a CC via phone. Then whoever I spoke with said it would be around 50 min and that they would give me a call when it was ready. I waited 2 hours and no call. Then I went to try to pick up the order. They said they had called but had not taken my correct phone number. But they had accurately taken my CC info. I am disappointed bc normally the food is warm when I pick it up. Today, it was cold. And the server who gave my food to me for pick up said it was my fault for not coming sooner. I had assumed that they were busy and perhaps my order had not been cooked yet. But it had been sitting there for 2 hours. It's a poor system to indicate they'll call when it's ready when they did not. read more

This place is a local hidden gem! My friend and I went on a Thursday night and were seated right away. We ordered the rice cracker, edamame, volcano roll, mango salmon roll, and ice cream mochi. Food tasted amazing and fresh, and the price was appropriately higher as the quality is better than most places. After reading some of the other reviews, I have to disagree about the service; the service was great - the servers were attentive to us the entire night and were super friendly! Happy Sushi has changed ownership and I can't tell you how much the food has improved overnight. The fish is amazingly fresh, the salmon egg sushi was perfect and the little eggs burst in your mouth as they should, rather then being slimy-soft. They even brought us a special sea urchin that was wonderfully fresh. It still has a nice family atmosphere, but this is a place the Ravinia and surrounding community can be proud to call local! I encourage you to give it another try very soon if it's been awhile. My 7 year old daughter and I still hang at a table and play hangman while we wait, but it might start getting too crowded to relax soon. read more

Now I may be spoiled, living in Chicago, but my internet has been out for days so I came up to HP for work and had to eat. Decided to go for simple, the litmus test. Spicy tuna, spicy salmon. Spicy salmon was bland. Spicy tuna was not spicy (ok no biggie) but the most troublesome was the texture. I get this won't be a super fancy chunk of tuna. I was prepared for that. But it wasn't a mince, either. More like mash tuna. Bottom line. My super simple rolls were mediocre at best. And frankly, for the product, price is a bit steep :/ I realize it's drastic times right now, so I don't want to be too harsh but it seems I should have relied on reviews from months past. What you see is what you get, and you have to see this place! In a relatively small and unobtrusive storefront is quite easily the freshest fish I have had in years. Attention to detail appears to have gone into the preparation of everything, from the sushi, to the rice cracker, and even the size of the tofu in the miso soup. New Owner = Great Sushi! Wow, so glad there is new ownership here and they've nailed it. The sushi is really really good. The crispy rice spicy tuna appetizer is money - I think it's the best thing on the menu and its incredible. As for the other rolls, unlike the old (un) Happy Sushi, these rolls have a lot of fish and everything is fresh, with not too much rice. All meals come with salad and soup, which is a nice plus too. All in all, Happy has moved into a new class that stacks up well compared to most north shore suburban sushi spots. Well done!!! read more

I asked what was good and a man behind the bar yelled "sushi!" I was in the mood for soup and requested feedback on them and went with the woman's murmured suggestion. After I slight wait I was home with my soup. She gave me the Veggie Yaki Udon. I had mentioned I wanted a chicken soup but I think due to the time they were out of chicken. It was a large portion and very hot : ) temperature! But I gotta say for the ~price point~ $9 plus tax and tip it was a disappointment. The base was very miso taste and just bland. There was only 4 kinds of veggie whuch were sparse and flavorless. The looong noodles were gummy texture. A giant bowl of Snoresville. Besides the price and taste. The atmosphere of the place is odd and tables close together. I also think at that look and location they should be a BYOB joint. It is typical and casual. However, the service was good (though not informative about the soup contents). They let me bring in my doggie since no one was there and we're supernice to little man. I would go again to try something different. The Twister Roll and Evergreen Rolls sound rad. I guess that's why it's called "Happi Sushi" not "Happi Soup." This one deserves a 5 star among the others, which mostly were rated 3-4 stars ( not incl Katsu, 153 Akira, Asahi). Its a bit pricy as per the portion. But the flavor is truely touching. So disappointed. I chose this restaurant because of the ratings. My eel sauce taste burnt. The Fiesta roll (A takeoff from the Mexican roll) was completely bland. Very nice atmosphere and NEW OWNERSHIP. They have a nice normal selection of fish, nothing exotic but as sushi snob I was pleased to note that the fish was not pre-cut YEAH! Ok all I can say is the fish is WOW fresh and the rice is FAR FAR FAR SUPERIOR TO THE PRIOR OWNERSHIPS. I loved the old places owner and chef, he was very friendly BUT he used really marginal rice for negiri and to me this is the mark of a bad place. Now, the rice here seemed perfectly cooked al dente - not chewy but not mush and it ads with Japanese or Californian rice as opposed to Chinese rice. Whomever thought the food was flavorless before must have had a hankering for Americanized sauces and was talking about rolls as opposed to what I am more concerned with - which is the subtle flavor of a well seasoned rice with a melt in your mouth fresh tasting fish. The place while it didn't have my favorite (UNI) it did have good fresh toro and I also tried the chefs favorite which was the akami or big eye tuna. read more
