My daughter ate here last night and I asked her to place the pickup order for me and she did. I went to pickup the food after she left. They asked me for $47.12 after my daughter paid for both meals. They double charged me not only for my take out but also for my daughters dinner. When I called them to discuss the duplicate charge, they claimed I should let them know if it was paid or not when I picked it up. I was appalled!!!! It is the restaurants job and duty to let us know if take out order were paid or not. Instead, he was arguing with me that this was my fault and that they have many orders to process. I guess Sushi Kushi can't run a real business if you have zero clue what was paid or not. First, I am a business owner in a service industry, clients are never wrong and if they are.....you apologize and take ownership and responsibility as a business owner. If he had apologized and kept it simple, I wouldn't be writing this review. No one is perfect and I understand everyone makes mistakes. Its the way the they handled it. Even after I visited to receive my cash refund, they were defensive and the lady was talking to me with her arms crossed and continued to make excuses. NOT ONE APOLOGY. Sushi Kushi is great! Affordable prices, amazing ambiance, wonderful service, delicious food. Our server Julia was so attentive and made the whole dining experience very personable. My vegan brother and I dined here and they had plenty of options for us to try! We ordered the AAC maki, sweet potato makis, shiitake kushi, veggie egg rolls, yaki onigiri. Our total was only $30 for all of that food which is crazy, serious bang for your buck with this restaurant. Food reviews below! Shiitake Kushi 10/10 -- Grilled shiitake skewers with this delicious sauce on top. No idea what the sauce was, but it was seriously so good. At only $2 a skewer, you may as well order 10 of them. Similar restaurants sell these for $10+ and these taste the same if not better. Egg rolls 9/10 -- Great! Solid egg rolls. It was a little more pricey for the restaurant, $6 for 3. AAC maki 9/10 -- So fresh, sesame seeds and delicious high quality fillings Yaki onigiri 10/10 -- Amazing. Almost no restaurants have this on their menu. Grilled soy sauce rice ball, simple and delicious! They also offer other onigiris with seafood filling and plum for the vegan options. Definitely recommend. Sweet Potato Maki 8/10 -- Great!! I love the soft sweet potato. I wish there was more of a tempura crunch though... maybe if they changed it so the roll was i/o and had tempura flakes on the outside? I wouldn't mind a higher price if they made this change as well, I think it would taste way better! Great as is though. Overall highly recommend this restaurant. I ordered sushi and asked to have it wrapped in cucumber. Server never mentioned the 6$ upcharge, which also shorted me 2 pieces. I was supposed to have 6 and ended up with 4. Asked about it, and the owner simply wouldn't give me the time of day. Threw the menu and gave me an unpleasant conversation, and told me never to come back. I was shell shocked, mistreated, and disrespected, all for asking about my bill. Maybe she had a bad day but never expected her to flip out like that. Be careful. read more

Oh how I wanted to give this place 4 stars like their counter part in Lake Forest. Unfortunately I just can't after my two trips here. I have to admit I came specifically to try their ramen and neither visit really satisfied me. First off, I don't know why, but they have a separate menu just for ramen which is fine, but they don't give you this menu! On both occasions I've had to specifically ask for it. So I had the Taiwanese Tonkatsu ramen which 1) tasted nothing like Taiwanese ramen as I've had the real thing in Taiwan multiple times 2) was spicy as hell (and Taiwanese ramen is not usually spicy) I don't recall the menu saying spicy either. Now this wouldn't be problematic because I actually like spicy foods and can take it pretty well...however, the soup literally burned my mouth and throat. So that made it rather difficult to eat and enjoy. It was so spicy that my companions started dumping ice water in to make it less so. Second visit. I realized okay, maybe we should stay away from the Taiwanese ramen. This time I had just the plain tonkatsu ramen since I figured you can't really mess it up. Luckily there was no surprise spice so it was much more pleasant to eat. But that was just it. It was a very plain bowl of ramen that's nothing like the real Japanese deal. The broth isn't well developed, the meat is at most average, and the egg seemed like it was just hard boiled and then thrown in. On the plus side, we had no problems getting seated right away and the service was decent. It's a pretty cute place too. Until I return and try an actual non-ramen entree, 3 stars will suffice for this Sushi Kushi location. read more

Husband: "By the way, how many stars on Yelp does this place have?" Me: "3.5" Husband: "What? We're going to a 3.5 star restaurant on date ngiht?" Me: "Well it came highly recommended from friends." Unlike Abigail's we were able to get a table immediately here. There's a lot on the menu, but nothing really appealed to me. I was in the mood for special rolls, but none of them sounded great so I opted for an unagi hand roll, shrimp tempura roll and 2 pieces of tobiko instead. My husband went w/ one of the sushi dinners. I noticed a few people at nearby tables eating the ramen, which actually looked pretty good. I'd probably opt for that next time since the sushi didn't wow me. Sushi Kushi Too is a comfortable, neighborhood sushi restaurant offering quality at a fair price (given that it is located in downtown Highland Park). My sister introduced me to this place as she works up the road at Fort Sheridan, and we've eaten here on many occasions over the past few years. The atmosphere and decor is sort of a contemporary Asian motif, with the long sushi bar dominating the room and space for a few tables. Upon walking in you might think it is trendy but the food is really more traditional. Ramen noodles here are a good choice for a lunch meal if you don't want sushi, but I think you'll want to at least try some of the rolls. I like the Central Roll best but all of them are beautifully assembled and presented, and most importantly, are delicious. The only nitpick I have here is that there sometimes is a heavy hand on the sauce they use to dress the rolls. Fish is standard in terms of portion size and freshness. I tend to prefer sashimi these days over nigiri but both are recommended here. Service is inconsistent, usually attentive but sometimes slow, especially on busy Fridays and Saturdays. It's best to arrive early because once the crush hits, it stays crowded until the later hours. Sushi Kushi Too is on my recommendation list. read more

I have been going to here for years on and off. I've found that the sushi is consistent and they have a nice menu of non sushi Japanese dishes. The atmosphere is nice but can get loud depending on the crowd. It is a fun place that my family likes to go to. The meals can range from moderate to costly. It's been five years, but time for some updates (five years!?!). I went here last night and ate outside with a friend. When we first got there, we were told there was a wait, and I usually am Not Here For That, but we had time on our hands and weren't super hungry, so it was fine. After we walked around for 15 minutes, we came back. Throughout this whole process, most of the people who work here are very obvious when it comes to showing how annoyed they are with people waiting around for tables. We had slow service outside - but we weren't in a hurry. The brittle hot tuna is smaller than it used to be but still tastes fine. Pretty noticeable downsizing though. And the Red Dragon roll was predictably good, in all its Americanized glory. This might seem like a small complaint, but if you get soda there, be prepared for flat stuff that tastes like it's been sitting at the back of the fridge for two months. I could easily go back here, but it's gone slightly downhill. Of course, people will still go, so they really have no reason to make it any better. read more

There are a number of Sushi Kushi places in the north suburbs of chicago. This one is tiny compared to the one in lake forest. Waits can be long on weekends. Rolls here are OK, nothing special and are a bit on the pricey side. The entrees are ok as well, again nothing to speak of. The sauces tend to be a bit strong and overpowering. Service was efficient and a bit cold. Inside its so cramped that its really hectic. For some reason I feel like the quality and service at the other locations is better. read more

My friend took me to this place and claimed it had better ramen than even places he tried in New York! We had the tonkatsu ramen lunch set with fried rice and gyoza, and the Taiwan tonkatsu ramen. Everything was very tasty and after having their ramen, I'm definitely not going back to that ramen shop in Mitsuwa! Free parking is available on the street. The food was excellent and served in large portions. I read prior reviews about poor service, and they almost kept me from going. Fortunately I went anyway. The service was 100% great. If we took two sips of tea, a server was there to fill the cup. And the whole staff was super welcoming. When I asked for a knife and fork instead of chopsticks, the server smiled and brought them elegantly on a plate. read more

After sweating it out for a little while at the Taste of Highland Park, we decided a nice, air conditioned restaurant is where we wanted to eat dinner. We had originally decided on Tamales, but as we walked there, the unassuming sushi place next door that we'd never tried, caught my eye and I said, "let's try here instead." My first impression of the restaurant is that they had a lot of staff on for the night. At least three sushi chefs, plus a handful of servers. The restaurant isn't that large. The menu was pretty standard, a lot of their specialty maki consisted of something that had eel and/or eel sauce. We ordered three rolls, the Highland Park, the Highlander, and I think it was the Red Dragon (the menu that is shown online is not the same as the menu in the restaurant.) We also ordered four pieces of nigiri. The flavors on the rolls were good, and the filling-to-rice ratio was better than some other places we've tried. One thing I cannot stand is if there is too much rice. It kills the whole roll. What I did not like about our experience at Sushi Kushi Too, is as follows: 1. While the rice/filling ratio was good, the rolls were sloppy. They do not take any pride in presentation here. 2. For the amount of staff working that evening, service could've been more attentive. 3. There was a fruit fly hanging out near our sushi all night. This makes me question the cleanliness of the whole establishment. 4. Someone who works there's girlfriend was (seemingly) drunk and hanging out at the sushi bar all night, being generally loud and rude. 5. No background music. 6. Servers complaining about their tips right in front of us. I cannot say that I'll be back. Mark another failed sushi attempt off in Highland Park for me. Sad. read more

Full disclosure: I'm from Chicago but have lived in LA for the past 7 years, so I'm accustomed to above average sushi at the very worst, simply because of the general freshness of fish on the west coast. Sushi Kushi is a casual neighborhood joint in downtown Highland Park. It has an extensive menu of sushi, rolls, teriyaki, shish kabobs, hot and cold appetizers. Kudos to the broad menu and reasonable prices, particularly for sushi. But the quality is simply average. Not terrible but nothing great. On a recent night we had: Gomae Edamame (too watery, not salty enough) Spicy scallop roll inside out with wasabi tobiko (best roll of the night) Rainbow roll (usually my favorite, kind of bland) Fresh salmon and avocado roll (fine) Chicago roll (meh) This place is fine if you're looking for reasonably priced sushi. Great sushi? The best! (and I worked at another sushi place for 4 years!) Kushi yaki? Excellent! But one huge reason why I love Sushi Kushi? Real, authentic, Japanese home cooking, and great prices too! Delicious yaki soba (pan friend noodles), don buri (rice bowl meals), and even oni giri (rice balls)! Japan doesn't live on sushi, they have other great food too, I'm so glad to have a place to get it! Staff is always super friendly. They are always really busy, and they have to work in a tight space, yet always fast and friendly! Just a couple tips: - PLEASE do not ask for Chinese food here..... or any Japanese restaurant for that matter. There is no beef with broccoli, egg rolls, or sweet and sour chicken. Scoot yourself to Panda Express for that. - DO NOT stick your chopsticks in your food and leave them sitting up straight. It's considered bad luck (like incense sticks at a funeral.) - The soda with the marble is called Ramune. It's not 'Japanese Sprite'. It tastes like bubblegum, nothing like Sprite. - Tell the staff how much you like everything! It's a really tough neighborhood to cater to, show them some love! read more

I have only had takeout from here, but I've gotten it a bunch of times now, so I feel like I have a pretty good sense of the place. First of all, sometimes when you try to order takeout, the phone just rings and rings and rings, or it's busy for like, a solid hour. Do they not hang up well? I can't imagine they're THAT busy. On those nights, I eat something else. But when I DO manage to place my order, not bad! Now, I'm not a fan of the giant sushi rolls you see so many places -- I like my sushi nice and simple, with the occasional spicy tuna roll. The fish here is nice and fresh tasting, so it's definitely good enough to eat in non-roll form. I do wish the rice was a little more tightly packed-- they often seem to fall apart! and the weird omelet thing I love so much other places really just tastes like scrambled egg here. it's really good home-alone-on-a-saturday-night takeout food, but I wouldn't make it my go-to sushi date night location. For up here in Highland park, this place is solid. Ambiance is decent. Servers are eh, but the sushi chefs are very friendly. Sushi is decent for the price. The ramen here however, is fantastic. In particular, try the taiwan style - it is a solid meal on it's own. I have never had a bad meal here; at worst I've had an okay meal and at best I had a fantastic one. read more

I think I found the best ramen noodles in the northern suburbs here. Went here on a recent Saturday night with my wife, jonesing for some ramen. Voila! They had Taiwan Style Ramen on the menu. Nice big pieces of pork, delicious and perfectly cooked ramen noodles, and a great broth. It's on par, but different, from the ramen you get in the food court at Mitsuwa. Great sushi here too. Great menu...lots to choose from, including some entrees I haven't seen at other Japanese restaurants, and I've been to quite a few. Service is friendly. A bit of a wait on weekend nights, but that's testament to the oishii eats here. Located in downtown Highland Park. Street parking on a weekend night is a bit of challenge, but there's a large lot east of the restaurant about two and half blocks away. read more

I used to love this place. It was my go to place for ramen but something happened here. It changed somehow. My husband and I used to deliberately come here for ramen but after today's visit I am probably never going back. The appetizers were great but the donkatsu ramen and Taiwan ramen were pretty bad. The broth was just too salty and didn't have the deep broth flavor. The Taiwanese ramen also had changed. The meat might not have been cooked because I could smell the pork. The broth was also salty and just sub par. We both did not finish the ramen. Other than the entrees, appetizer and service was good. read more
