This is a high quality sushi joint and I picked up a couple of party trays from here. It's mostly a carryout shop though there are a few bar seats facing out towards their storefront window. Surprisingly, this unassuming looking shop had 5 sushi chefs working behind the counter at 11:15am on a Saturday morning, so business must be good and brisk here. I've been told by a few people about how Ao Sushi is a top tier low-key sushi spot in the north suburbs of Chicago. It's pick up and delivery only. I suggested ordering online as the pick up time for us was about 45 minutes. We ordered and picked up which I was actually thoroughly impressed with the spread already. The Dragon Balls had a nice light fried rice flavor blended well with the spicy salmon, but the spicy salmon was not holding up in their packaging unfortunately. The Godzilla roll was top tier and well assembled. The caterpillar roll had a nice crunch and the spicy salmon roll was good quality but average tasting. The Spicy Tuna special roll was creamy and light. Their nigiri is unreal and has the proper amount of fish to rice ratio. Most of the items will be repeats for me. read more

But I haven't been able to find it quite yet - the closest I've been able to find in the North Shore is AO Sushi. Their prices may not be as good but their quality is slightly better while still being reasonably priced, definitely still better priced than many sushi restaurants in the area. This place is built more for takeout than dine in, so if you're looking for a nice date night spot, this isn't it. This place is pretty affordable and good! Ao sushi showed they closed at 7:30 pm online, but they were still able to take carryout orders at 7:15 pm when I called. I ordered the North Ocean (salmon and avocado) and Eel with cucumber All together I had 16 pieces of sushi for ~$13 and it was very worth it for the freshness and amount of sushi I got. The salmon/avocado pieces were pretty big, so that roll pretty much filled me up. The salmon was fresh, the avocadoes were perfectly ripe. The eel roll was good too! The eel sauce was on point and the cucumbers were crunchy. Everything tasted as expected and I was very happy :) One recommendation I want to make is to use the soy sauce with less sodium. It is much better with the sushi because the saltiness of the original soy sauce pretty much overpowers the sushi. Now onto the atmosphere and restaurant environment. I loved the service during pick up. The workers were very friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was just very calming and nice. You could basically see the sushi chef making the rolls and even the fish that he used. Everything seemed pretty clean. The other thing I really appreciated was that I could take my own chopsticks, napkins, soy sauce, and soy sauce trays. I loved having those options available to me! I'm glad I found Ao sushi. Really convenient, fast sushi place that'll hit the spot for a quick dinner. They had really well priced sushi rolls and maki combinations. I got a white fish maki roll with green onion for $5. The rice was a bit hard, but the fish was fresh and delicious. The chicken karaage was flavorful and the rice was perfectly chewy. Service was friendly and efficient. You can also order your rolls fresh or get them from the fridge. They had 4 sushi chefs working when I went on a Tuesday night so your rolls will be finished within 5 minutes. Had AO Sushi in Wilmette, IL for dinner tonight. It's takeout only and hands down the best sushi I've had in the Chicago land area. The fish is just so damn fresh! And the rice doesn't have that overly vinegar taste that other places sometimes have. It's very decently priced, we ordered 6 rolls for $70 bucks including tip. We ordered from AO Sushi after I had a procedure done at Northshore Hospital and I was starving. I didn't want to risk raw fish post operation so we opted for the all cooked sushi tray. We had ordered from AO sushi several times and were very happy. However, on Saturday we were really disapointed. It took 1 1/2 hours to be ready for pickup (we still had to wait), the rolls fell apart and most of all the sashimi smelled fishy. As we know that is a sign of not being fresh! I am a long time customer and LOVE their sushi, plus the fact that they offer fresh cut fish and other fixings in their case for making your own at home. Love it love it love it!! The reason for the less than glowing review is that the last few times I have tried to place an order, they do not answer the phone! I'm stuck placing an order through their on-line ordering portal which is far less user friendly -- I can't find out if they have specialty items in stock (like uni, etc.), can't find out how long the wait will be until after my order is placed, and can't ask any other questions. AO has high quality grade sushi. I grabbed a to go container of tuna, salmon, california rolls, and house salad, as well as a small miso soup. All the sushi was fresh. The only negative thing I can say is that the sushi didn't include wasabi in the to go container. I would highly recommend coming here for your sushi needs. read more

I came here on a cold Chicago day and was surprised I had never been here before! One half market, one half sushi restaurant, AO Sushi caters to all audiences - grocery, takeout, and dine-in. I didn't have super high expectations once I came inside and I would say the fish quality wasn't amazing for sashimi/nigiri.. That being said, the rolls are truly something else. I love eating sushi rolls that are deep fried or doused in some sort of savory sauce, it's fun! The Chicago Fire Roll has great textures and flavors (no dipping in soy sauce needed) and the cream cheese helped cut the saltiness. The Hokkaido Roll - which for the November Special was great since it came with a small miso soup and side of seaweed salad for only $0.70 more - was quite refreshing! I loved both of these rolls and would definitely order them (and more!) next time. read more

Just found my new favorite quick sushi pick up spot. Got a few rolls (spicy tuna HR, spicy scallop, philly, sweet potato) and sashimi and a large miso. Spicy tuna hand roll didn't have much spicy mayo in it. I'm glad they have a large assortment of sauces you are able to purchase, I got an eel sauce, wasabi mayo (favorite!), and a gluten free soy sauce which is awesome because most places don't have that! Sashimi tasted fresh. Sweet potato roll was just o.k.. Soup was decent considering it comes out of a 'soda fountain' type machine, would love to know where I could buy one. Ha. read more

After Covid and all the inflation, I just went back again and I have to say it was just adequate. Nothing wrong with the food but nothing special and all I got was two rolls and a small miso soup and it was $22. This spot was "just okay" for me. I got the California Deluxe roll and Tempura Oishii roll. The California was okay but fell apart a bit. The Oishii roll was better, so I'd preferred​ that one instead. I tried their salad with the carrot ginger dressing. It was a bit on the sweet side for me and was flavorful. Parking here can be a challenge when it's busy. They have an awesome selection of sauces and fish you can buy to make a nice DIY rice bowl. read more

My go to sushi spot! Love how fresh the sushi rolls are and how convenient pick up has been during Covid. Portions are amazing and I love how customizable the rolls are. While what I get tends to vary, the Wilmette roll is a personal favorite! The roll is packed with salmon, tuna and avocado and is a substantial size for a roll. Prices are very good as well. My mom was excited to order carry out from here with me. She placed the order online and I believe the first online order you place gets 10% off. When we picked up the food, the employees were very friendly. We ordered a bunch of different things...way too much for 2 of us. We got the Sushi Deluxe Combo, yellowtail roll, California roll, Russian roll, Oregon roll and Tower roll. The chili mayo in the Oregon and Tower rolls weren't very noticeable. Overall the rolls had a good amount of fish in them so it was worth the money! They were all good, but I liked the Russian roll the most. They close at 6:30pm on Sunday's so be mindful that you need to get your order in before 6pm. read more

We've ordered from here twice now and both have been great experiences and tasty food. But last night what could have been a terrible experience turned into something really nice. So we ordered one of their DIY sushi kits(more about that below), but they forgot the rice. Shame on me for not double checking the bag to ensure everything was in there before I pulled away, but I was in a rush. Anyway once I realized the mistake I called and let them know. They sincerely apologized and then sent a driver with the rice to our house. I didn't have to even ask, they took care of the problem without hesitation. That's the kind of experience that makes me want to go back. The DIY sushi kits are a lot of fun and a great activity for quarantine. They come with rice, nori, fish, fake crab, spicy mayo, scallions and more. But what's great is that you can get creative but adding on sides like crunchy tempura, tobiko or add more fish. They even have the sushi mats for sale. We have ordered an extra side of sushi rice just to be sure we had enough. Definitely will be back! read more

Sea Ranch moved a few doors north in the same shopping center and is now AO Sushi. I use to come to Sea Ranch so I was a little surprised that they were gone. After going into the new location under the new name AO Sushi I asked the woman behind the counter and she told me they moved in April of 2015. The new store is small, but is laid out very nice, efficient and modern. I was surprised by the number of people working in a relatively small space. I spoke to the cashier whom I assume is the owner. She is 2nd generation Japanese or Nisei. I ordered 2 small items, an Unagi roll and a squid salad (both delicious). The squid salad is marinated in sesame oil, w/sesame seeds, brown bamboo, and tiny pieces of hot red pepper to give it a little bit of a kick. read more

I was ordering my weekly takeout from AO Sushi via Yelp last week when I noticed my 3 star review from 2014. AO Sushi and I may have gotten off on just a "A-OK" start, but it's my go to whenever I want to bring sushi in...which is at least once a week. Favorites include the Sriiracha Roll & the small sashimi tray (perfect for 1 person). Their sushi platters are also a fun, tasty, healthy & relatively affordable option for get togethers, ravinia etc. Everyone who works here is super friendly and even tracked me down after I once left my purse while eating there. Oops. Speaking of eating at AO there are just a few seats, but I've stopped and enjoyed my sushi there a few times for lunch while in the area. I tend to bring home for the entire family for dinner...my kids are big fans of their carrot rolls...and even bigger fans of the cupcakes from Gigi's a few doors down. For dining in BluFish (Glenview) and Tanoshii (Highland Park) are my go tos, but IMO AO is the best takeout in the North Shore...or delivery if you're lucky enough to live in their delivery zone. read more
