    a bento box of food
    Caroline N.

I was in the northbrook area and wanted sushi and saw they had this place tucked away in a plaza. Parking in the lot of course. The place inside is pretty small, but it wasn't busy on a Thursday night. Was seated right away. I got a bento box with chicken. It was honestly so good but I couldn't finish and had to take it to go. I think there was only 1-2 staff working so I know they were working hard filling up orders and answering the phone. No one really checked up on us but it was honestly fine. Food was delicious. If I'm craving next time I'm in the area, I'd probably go back!

Experience: With a party of two, we were able to be seated and served fairly quickly. This was a Thursday night. Unsure how it is during the weekend. Parking: Since it is part of a strip mall, parking is included. Depending when you go, spots may be limited right in front of the business. However, if you walk a bit, there is a bigger lot. Worth: If you are by the area and are in a mood for some Japanese food, this is the place to go. It seems pretty authentic and the staff spoke Japanese the whole time. In addition, you know this place is legit if Japanese families come and eat.

Fujiyama used to be my favorite sushi spot. It was my go to- and then they sold the business and everything went down hill. From Paul's famous spicy Mayo, to the quality of fish, it's simply not the same anymore. It's one thing when something looks nice, it's another when it has the taste to stand behind it. Please bring back the quality!!

I normally don't review suburban restaurants, but I give credit where credit is due! Northbrook is very far from me, but I was at the Chicago Botanic Garden and we were looking for something good for lunch. Thank goodness for the yelp app! When we stepped inside the restaurant, I quickly noticed that this was an old school Japanese joint. Nice! I ordered the Makunouchi bento for lunch. It came with ginger salad, miso soup, tempura, 3 large pieces of california maki, chicken terriyaki, saba terriyaki and rice. The ginger dressing was light and citrusy, not mayo-based. Miso soup was good, but didn't come with any seaweed. The tempura was great! The batter was perfect and light, there was plenty of veggie variety and came with two shrimps. I usually don't like when I see shredded crab in california maki, mostly because it's often mixed with mayonnaise. Luckily, this cali roll had no mayo in the shredded crab. The terriyaki sauce was not thick and overly sweet, like most places. The chicken was smoky and comes chopped up. The mackerel was very good! It also tasted smoky and I think it was broiled. The mackerel was very fresh, tender and a bit oily, as it should be. This bento box was a great value for the quality and amount of food. I barely was able to make a dent in the chicken terriyaki. The sliced oranges at the end of the meal were a nice touch. I was very happy with this lunch choice. If I'm ever in this area again, I wouldn't think twice about coming back. Service was good, attentive and straight to the point. We didn't have any issues like others have mentioned about the service. But then again, I'm kind of used to old school restaurants in Chinatown and Korea town in Chicago where the waitstaff isn't always super duper friendly. I wish this place was closer to me!

Very high quality mom and pop sushi shop. The wife is friendly with those who are friendly, but she doesn't take crap from anyone. You have to remember the crowd they have to deal with up north here. Most folks either work in the city and know sushi or you have insulated high maintenance soccer moms/dads who would only eat a california roll. They have to deal with both types. So their fish is fresh but dont expect too many items outside the standard ingredients they have to stick with for the clientele. They try to be authentic while still catering to thier client base. Sushi places in the burbs are someone trapped by their clientele's tastes (for example see the one negative review where the high maintenance customer was pouting over being told the truth that this place gets PACKED and so they dont like over promising and underdelivering) So given the limitation of suburbanites who want immediate gratification and who dont realize REAL authentic japanese food is NOT covered in spicy sauce) this is as good as it can get out in the burbs. I eat sushi all over the world, the things I look for are: Rice - is the texture right? Is it too soft or mushy? can I taste each grain separately while it not being undercooked? Rice --Is the flavor of the rice right? Not overly sour, not sweet, but with a slight umami flavor and very slight acidity from the ingredients - sea weed, rice vinegar, sake, preferably no sugar but rather Mirin which is a sweetened rice wine for cooking. Is the fish cut correctly? I mean is it a hunk of fish? Ewwww! Is is cut too big for white Americans who love to shove huge pieces of fish in their mouths to know they got a value? NO THANKS! I would rather have two perfectly bite sized negeri for the same price as a large piece. I want to see the fish cover the rice but not hang over the edges of the rice like some weird tail. Is the snapper fresh? Notice this is LAST? because it better be a given!!! People can talk about the fish being fresh but have no clue how to judge this. Maguro, sake, and yellow tail are almost always fresh. Why cause thats what most folks eat when they dont know much about sushi. Ask for a piece of negeri snapper! If that piece is chewy and doesnt melt in your mouth like a piece of maguro than the guy doesnt know how to cut it and/or their fish is not that fresh.

I have been coming to Fujiyama at least 2x a week since my move to the general Chicago area, 3 years ago. Out of my appreciation for the wonderful owners, Paul and Irene, and the incredible quality of fish, customer service, and impeccable presentation that they have showed me since the first day I stepped through their doors, I thought it was due time that I wrote them a well deserved 5-Star review. When Fujiyama is not packed like a can of sardines, I like to sit up close and personal with Paul, the chef who's been running the one-man-show for the entire restaurant, spanning over the last 23 years. Paul's wife, Irene, takes care of all of the customers. She is quick, clean, has a great sense or humor and is impeccably sharp. Do not mess with this woman; she was a professional skater and is a skilled martial artist. If you're someone who enjoys flashy lights, attractive waitstaff and standard food that's dressed-up to look superior, go to bluFish. Fujiyama is a family-owned restaurant run by two hard-working individuals that stop at nothing to provide UNBELIEVABLE QUALITY. Furthermore, they are the only providers in the greater Chicago area that order wild-caught salmon from Iceland and Holland, so as not to sacrifice their dignity or quality. I guarantee you that anywhere else you go, you're eating farmed or frozen fish. DONE. To summarize, if you prioritize the quality of your food over all else, Fujiyama BEATS ANY SUSHI OPTION in the North Shore, by miles.

The size of the rolls are small, the fish isn't particularly fresh, and the prices are thus too high for what you get. Not going back.

The young woman at the host station wasn't exactly rude but not super friendly either, but she sat us at our table just fine. The decor inside is really attractive. Lots of Asian style decor and little bridges as you walk to your table. Why isn't there water in those little ponds! That would add so much to the overall aesthetic! I had the sirloin and shrimp with chicken fried rice and my boyfriend had the filet with beef fried rice. Our food was very good and prepared well. The sirloin was very good, as was the shrimp. I didn't know egg sauce came on the shrimp, considering you already get a shrimp appetizer with egg sauce. It's a very heavy sauce and I would have preferred it on one serving of shrimp and not both. The only side sauce you receive is a little dish of soy sauce. No ginger sauce and no yum-yum sauce. Service and waiting did take a bit of time, but this isn't the kind of restaurant where you go if you're in a hurry. We had a older woman as our table attendant and a man who did the grill work. They don't do any of the little hibachi tricks like other restaurants do. I kinda like that, but maybe Ron of Japan is too classy for onion volcanoes and such. My biggest complaint are the plates. A traditional round dinner plate is really nice as your food is being prepared in staggered stages. When everything is cooked, you have a nice full plate. Here, they give you a small rectangular plate that rests on the hibachi grill and it's slanted downward towards the grill surface. It's searing hot, so you can't touch it or move it closer to you. I found it a bit awkward and could easily see myself dropping food in my lap or something. Overall, we had a really nice dinner and a really nice family sharing the hibachi table with us. I would come back here, but honestly, I don't see much difference between Ron of Japan and any other hibachi restaurant in the Chicagoland area, such as Benihana or Tsukasa.
