Great grab and go spot! I was craving sushi and wanted something super fast. They are cranking out sushi like it's their job! I walked In for the first time and was impressed with all the options. It was so hard to make a decision! I grabbed a box of salmon and tuna nigiri, spicy tuna and I think a dragon- everything was good and fresh. A little bland but it hit the sushi craving. read more

Grabbed a couple rolls for lunch from Van's Sushi Cafe this week and it seemed like they changed a few things. First, the $5 rolls are now $6.99, so essentially $7. You cannot customize them as they are considered "grab and go" and the pieces are getting very small. While they still fill up the entire tray in area, they are sliced much thinner than they used to be so less filling overall. While I used to be good on a roll for a light lunch, this left me hungry and I had to get other food. There is also a wasabi undertone to the rolls that was not there before. As we don't enjoy the taste of wasabi (we like the siracha mayo though) this was a bit off-putting. We will probably give them another chance later on to see if they go back to their original size and taste of rolls that we liked so much, but this was a disappointing lunch. read more

My son had a hockey game down the street, so my wife came here to get us some fresh sushi. We were pleasantly surprised at the available selection and my wife was able to choose something for each of our tastes. For my girls, there were variations on the California roll that were perfect. I had a roll with spicy salmon and my wife had a veggie roll. The rolls were good, especially for the price, but I wouldn't say the "best" in the area. That said, for the convenience, price, and quality... and to support a local business that doesn't have all the bells and whistles, I think Van's Sushi Cafe is a gem! read more

The sushi is top notch especially for a take-out establishment. Actually quite a bit better than most restaurants in the area. Small little shop with a good variety of sushi. I. Ordered the sashimi platter and the salon salad. Overall the portions were good especially for the price. However, when I was eating the fish, I didn't get the sense it was sushi grade. My salmon had had a few pieces in it with tiny bones and my sashimi slices were great in size but didn't taste or smell as elevated as I would have expected for sashimi. Little hole in the wall place, but the food was well prepared and tasted great! My only gripe would be that their website was down and I had to order pickup through GrubHub, but the gentleman at the counter was very friendly and let me know that should be resolved soon. Ugh, I was hopeful with the good reviews, but the sushi was just okay. The prices were reasonable, but quality explains it. The Tempura Shrimp was drenched in sauce, so much that you couldn't even taste shrimp or any other ingredient. The Spicy Tuna Hand Roll was fresh, but it wasn't what I was expecting... just plain tuna and drizzle of spicy mayo (not spicy). Dynamite Tuna Roll was generous with masago, but I think it was to hide the low grade tuna... turned the sushi roll over, and the tuna was pale pink/brown- lacked flavor. The only positive was the Crab Inari Roll- yum! Sushi quality is comparable to grocery store sushi, so I guess I shouldn't have had high standards. However, decent selection if you're wanting an easy, quick meal. read more

Great value for premade sushi. Only the handrolls are made to order. Going on Saturday, the foot traffic was pretty steady so the options were all fresh and delicious. The $5.99 specials we bought were well worth their value - spicy tuna and salmon cado. For quick and convenient sushi, Van's will be hard to beat. But if you're willing to sit down and tip or have time to order ahead, there are some other local sushi places where you're going to find better options. But if you're suddenly craving sushi while driving down Milwaukee Ave like we were, Van's is a great option to get sushi right away. read more

I really wanted to love this place because it's a local place not too far from my house and price is really good. Alas it really comes down to expectations. If you are expecting to-go sushi then it's a good place, but if you are are expecting dine-in sushi then some of it is pretty mid. The good: I really liked their tuna sushi burrito. It was very flavorful and my gf and I really enjoyed it. It's everything you expect from a sushi burrito in terms of texture, fill, and flavor. Price was pretty good too imo. Average: I ordered Salmon and tuna rolls for the nippon combo. The maki rolls in Nippon combo were actually really good. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked the maki rolls over the nigiri. Not so good: the nigiri rolls. I think I didn't enjoy the nigiri rolls too much because the rice was too cold. I'm not sure if it was freshly made or was stored in fridge first but sushi rice should be served room temperature. Cold rice has a different texture. Overall I think the place is good depending on what you order. Price is really good and I def recommend the sushi burrito or maki rolls. read more

After being recommended here by fellow yelpers I finally got to try! We got the salmon spring roll, spicy tuna Philly roll, and the crab inari. Everything was fresh considering it was in the cooler and grab and go. Menu has a bit to choose from and the prices are fair for what you get! A staple in the area for sure. Sushi rice has the rice flavor and the cut of fishes are thick and quality! It's not a mind blowing culinary experience but way better than local grocery store- it probably has the same standard as Mitsuwa IMO. Good sushi at a fair price. This is a staple for us. Although there are a couple tables, I consider it purely a takeout place.

Third time coming, and we will be coming here more because it's so good and so worth it! We tried two new ones: Red Dragon Roll-- smooth and not super spicy, the taste of tuna is pretty refreshing against the creamy sauce. Generally I don't like the texture of the tuna, but I think the creamy sauce and the top layer spicy tuna mix made it more smooth! Hot Fancy Roll-- definitely got some kick to it. The inside is imitation crab meat, avocado, and cucumber. Outside is salmon sashimi. The sauces didn't stay put very well with traveling, and got squished by the container, but it's still super delicious. Next time I think I might try coming here and just pick up the premade ones so it'd be faster. I put in the order online at 10:45am (before they opened), which said would be ready by 11:03am, but when I got here at 11:15am, it's still not ready, but I can understand why because they just opened and already had a line going (on a weekday)! Also, I plan on getting the non spicy ones so my kids can have more options, and they are a bit cheaper than the fancier rolls! read more

We were driving by and saw this tiny place, next day decided to give it a try. When we walked in, this place is small but clean, only 4 seats, you can see them making sushi while waiting, staff is very nice. Food was good, for the price I can't complaint at all!! One of my favorite places in the suburbs. I was skeptical at first, since the sushi is mostly grab and go (though you can order fresh as well), but every roll I've had is delicious. The crab inari is my favorite, and I will happily wait for it if there isn't any already made. The staff is very nice and the place is clean. The strip it is on has finally been repaved, so it's easier to get in and park now. This is my go to when I want sushi and don't want to spend too much. read more

My sushi craving has been intense this week. Discovered this sushi place which was the closest one to my workplace. Got there exactly at 11 (when they open) and ordered one of their special rolls online for $5.99 before tax: salmon cado roll. What a great deal. When you see the roll, it's even better. The best fish to rice ratio I've seen in a roll! It's a small sushi cafe with limited seatings inside. More of a grab and go system. All the pre made rolls looked SO fresh and delicious! People inside were so friendly and welcoming! I am so happy I tried this place. This is definitely going to be my go-to place for sushi cravings when I'm at work. What a great place we have just found! This is a family owned sushi store in Vernon Hills which just gained our love! We had friends coming over last Saturday night and we wanted to get some sushi for them. Thanks to Yelp's search I found this wonderful place! We ordered the Dragon Party Tray (82 pieces for $79) and some appetizers. Let me tell you, it was so good! I cannot believe the how fresh it was, the quality is just wow! A new sushi cafe that just had it's grand opening today! Grand opening sale - sushi for $5! Heard that a friend's family was opening up a sushi place and came to check it out. A quick to-go sushi cafe (it does have a few window bar seats and a table for a few people to sit at). They have a some quick pre-packaged sushi you can grab quickly and go or you can order more sushi from the menu. We were just stopping in to order to go, so we picked up a few to-go boxes of sushi (great deal for this week!) to take to go. The sushi had big chunks of fish in it. I loved the ones with just salmon/avocado...even just having those two items in the sushi, there were large chunks of both and a good proportion so I could enjoy the smooth avocado texture, yet still taste the fish well. This may have been one of the few times that I enjoyed the cooked sushi as much as the raw ones. The spicy shrimp (cooked) was delicious, possibly my favorite out of all the sushi. And what stood out the most to us was the crunchy california rolls (recommended to us by the owner, especially for my husband who doesn't like raw fish). What is usually just a typical item was raised to another level here. They added fried onions to the top of it, making this a much more elevated california roll (a must try, especially if you're a california roll fan). Staff is friendly. We also felt pretty safe during covid times (everyone in there was wearing a mask). Will be back to try more things on the menu next time! read more

I've been wanting to try Van's, especially their $5 sushi rolls, for a long time now...but it's not in the most convenient location to my house. However, when I happened to be in the area this past Friday figured it was the perfect opportunity to bring home Van's for my sushi lovers at home. I ordered poke bowls for myself and my husband + a bunch of sushi for the fam (rainbow roll, shrimp tempura, salmon and California). My kids can usually eat 2 rolls on their own, but these rolls were pretty big (even though super affordable) so 1 was plenty. My boys were thrilled with their rolls, although my picky daughter complained that they put avocado in her shrimp tempura roll despite me asking for it plain. My tuna poke bowl was absolutely delicious and I enjoyed a few pieces of the kids sushi as well. Between their prices and amazing quality I can see why they have so many fans. I wish they would open a location closer to Glencoe so I could enjoy Van's more often! For those lucky enough to live/work in the area I would be eating this at least once a week! read more

I would have rated them a 5 because it is a great place to pick up great fresh sushi instead of a grocery store. But I'm only giving them a 4 based on 2 little but important things for me. For background, I used to purchase sushi from Fresh Market until they closed. My favorite was the salmon and tuna spring rolls. Once they closed I couldn't find them anywhere else. I was so excited when I happened on Van's upon returning to the office after COVID. Not to mention that I found may favorite lady, Wun, behind the counter making sushi. She is a gem. But I can't help but thinking that Van's is limiting the sushi makers expertise with cost cutting measures. I pick up my favorite rolls at least once a month along with other fare. But the rolls stick to one another and fall apart. Very difficult to eat, much less dip in sauce. It has gotten to the point I simply make my own version of a poke bowl adding spinach and an Asian dressing. But doing so misses the point because I wanted a roll. Also, I had asked if they would consider making brown rice maki and was greeted with what was almost a growl from (who I think is) the owner, which was a resounding "no". I will continue to frequent Van's, but I would more frequently if they improved the integrity of the seafood spring rolls and offered brown rice maki. read more
