I have been here numerous times, bought custom kid aprons, cookies for fun, cupcakes for a rainy day, did a camo birthday cake and cupcake theme for my son's birthday and a full sized Elsa cake for my daughter, all excellent experiences. This last time, had an atypical snafu with my holiday cupcake order and Amber, the general manager, was incredible- because my cupcakes were wrong and it was honestly too late too fix even though the cashier tried her best to add holiday colored sprinkles, the general manager refunded my entire order and hooked me up with courtesy cupcakes! I called a week before my friends birthday to have a cake made up. I spoke to a person named Jade who asked all the appropriate questions. I ordered a vegan (and clarified this was possible) red velvet cake with icing that was decorated like an Italian Rainbow Cookie. I arranged for another friend to pick up the cake, not knowing that there was a possibility for delivery. My friend picked up the cake at the time I arranged. The cake was not ready and then I got an email asking all the same questions that Jade asked. So then it was arranged for delivery in a couple of days. The bakery decided to deliver that day instead. Flavors are great, but art work for theme party seemed rushed. I ordered a lumberjack theme for my sons first birthday: smash cake, cupcakes, and sugar cookies. I sent photos of what I wanted it to resemble and while I get they aren't going to make it exactly as in the photos, I feel it was a rushed attempt. The buffalo plaid I asked for was not really the flannel plaid id asked for, it resembled a sloppy checker board cut out and for the sugar cookies I had ask for different types of animals and they just made Fox. Also the evergreen tree I had asked for on top of the smash cake was just a fondont cookie cut out of a tree, (I could've went to the store, got fondont and done that) not much effort and I had to pay $10 extra for it. However the flavors were really delicious and the birch tree look on the smash cake was good, but I just wasn't impressed with the art work that I'd requested for the price I paid. I am a pervert. I like to watch my husband devour cupcakes with voyeuristic glee. The way his eyelids flutter, his deep-throated moan - I love watching him eat cupcakes as much, if not more, than eating them myself. In the past week, I've been to Happy Cakes twice. I've spent $25 on 11 cupcakes. (The $2 Tuesday deal helped me with this.) I'm planning to go again on Saturday. The Red Velvet was scrumptious with the cream cheese frosting. The Chocolate on Chocolate (CoC) Todd declared to be "the cupcake of his childhood" and his official favorite. I didn't expect to like the Jack & Coke based on previous reviews, but tasted the smooth flavor of the bourbon more than I expected to. The Pom Pom was interesting, but I'm not a huge fan of sugary cereal so will probably give that a pass in the future. The Snickerdoodle cupcake tasted just like a snickerdoodle cookie and is an easy favorite. The peanut butter cup cupcake was pretty good, but something about the frosting didn't hit home for me. The oatmeal butterscotch cupcake was very tasty and far more butterscotchy than oatmealy. In each case, the cake is firm but not dry and the icing is creamy and not too sweet. Saturday I'm going back for the Guinness cupcake and the Maple Bacon cupcake. That's right, two Yelp favorites combined - Cupcakes & Bacon. I'm not sure if I'm excited or scared. My only complaints about this fantastic bakery is that I have hurt myself trying to stretch my mouth big enough to take a bite of the cupcake from top to bottom and that they have too many delicious flavors to tempt me. I appreciate that they specialize in cupcakes. They have multiple sizes, but primarily have a very reasonably sized medium cupcake that I think is "just right." They also have a Papa Bear big cupcake and teensy tiny Baby Bear cupcakes, but they are special order only. I'm impressed that they offer gluten free cupcakes as I have several friends with Celiac disease. Right now they are offering a pretty cool contest. When I treat myself I also like to do good. Thanks to the pink and white cupcakes I ate at Happy Cakes this past weekend I was able to accomplish this. The cupcakes were vanilla with pink frosting and a portion of the proceeds went to a breast cancer foundation. Truly the definition of sweet. Besides the cupcake I had they also had really interesting looking flavors like the pom poms which were covered in Trix cereal. Yum. Or a mocha chocolate something delicious. I'm conflicted about Happy Cakes. The shop itself is really adorable, and the cupcakes on display are picture perfect. They have three flavors that are offered everyday, and then featured flavors that are different everyday of the week. I went on a Friday where they have a "happy hour" theme, with cosmopolitan, arnold palmer, margarita, and jack and coke cupcakes. The lady working was kind of snobby, and treated me as a nuisance instead of her only customer (which I was). The price was pretty average for a cupcake shop, except they charged extra for a "premium" flavor. I had ordered a Jack and Coke and a Margarita cupcake. The Jack and Coke cupcake was pretty unimpressive. The flavors were a little peculiar, and certainly did not deliver what was promised. The Margarita cupcake was better. Coincidentally, it's the same day Happy Cakes rolls out the Two Dollar Tuesdays discount so you can save fifty cents a cupcake. Don't be afraid to go any other day of the week, though. The Red Velvet (a chocolate cake dyed red served with a cream cheese topping) and Black & White (the cupcake version of the aptly named cookie) are crowd pleasers. Happy cakes? No, they should call it sad cakes. I'm super glad I used my Living Social deal to redeem for the dozen cupcakes I picked up this past weekend. These things are abnormally small. We planned our day around a late lunch to be followed by cupcakes from Happy Cakes. They closed at 6PM so we couldn't do it for an after dinner dessert. We had been looking forward to it all week. They had just a few cupcakes of each kind, but they had quite a few kinds. But the more we looked the more we realized that it wasn't really anything creative. They had the usual things you can get anywhere (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, vanilla cake with vanilla frosting) along with a few kinds that were a bit more interesting but not hard to find anywhere else (carrot cake, red velvet cake, spice cake). We ordered a spice cake with vanilla frosting as well as a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. We were eating them for dessert but they have nowhere to sit. They have a single bench outside in the cold. We ended up eating them in the car. The cake was only so-so. We expected better than what you can get at the grocery store and the cake was dry and a little boring. The frosting was better but you can't make up for cake that doesn't cut it. In the end we were both kind of bummed. We'd both had better cupcakes at other places. With nowhere to sit and enjoy your dessert I doubt I'll be back. I was so excited when I read the article to learn that we had finally gotten our own cupcake place. I finally got to check out Magnolia Bakery recently and I think I liked these cupcakes even more. The cupcakes were amazing. I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I tried the chocolate, the vanilla and the carrot cake. The chocolate was my favorite. It did have a LOT of frosting, but in my opinion there is never too much frosting. And it wasn't too sugary. The cake parts were all very moist, which can often be the killer in a cupcake. I'm very sad to say that Happy Cakes did not make me happy. Just a little background...when I was unemployed for a few months, I made extra money by running my own baked goods delivery service. I LOVE baked goods, and my friends know me as a baker. And this place did not meet nor exceed my expectations. Cute little shop, but quite small. Not a problem, because the courtyard outside was beautiful. I got 4 assorted cupcakes and 2 scotcheroos, one for me and one for the mr. I liked the scotcheroo, but I think they're hard to screw up. The cupcakes were unimpressive. The cake was okay, a bit on the dry side (and we went right when they opened, when they should have been at their freshest), but the icing was way too sweet. All of the icings were hard and grainy. Whatever they use in their "buttercream" didn't seem very buttery....butter doesn't just solidify at room temperature unless there is a crapton of sugar in there (which, maybe, there was). Although they advertise fresh-baked cupcakes every day, I wonder if maybe I got yesterday's stuff? They were "refreshing" their display when I ordered, so who knows. And their prices are just ridiculous. Almost $3 for a cupcake that's nothing special? Um....okay. I found Happy Cakes on Yelp and wanted to get cupcakes delivered to my sister who works in downtown Denver. I ordered online (12 dozen and a delivery) then received a call a couple days later to give my card info over the phone. I never received an invoice or how much it was going to cost and was never told there was a delivery fee on-top of the cupcake costs.I called to see when I would get charged and was told that I would not be charged until the day of the order. That's when I found out they had added on an $18 deliver fee for a 2-3 mile delivery from their shop. I have no problem paying for a delivery fee but they could have let me know ahead of time that there would even have been a fee and I would feel much better about the situation. I should have been told up-front about the whole costs (cupcakes+delivery) not just charged a random amount for a delivery fee. No happy cakes for me. read more

I still really dig this place. When I am in the neighborhood this is a great treat. I have had the cosmopolitan cupcake which I believe was featured on Martha Stewart and it was fancy enough for me as well. On the cupcake tour I couldn't resist the red velvet which is a favorite flavor of mine and it was finger licking good and they even offered to give my cake no frosting, but for I really wanted a taste of everything. I think Happy Cakes is basically a great template for what the Highlands has turned into for the most part-- yuppified, snobby, over-priced, and over-hyped. I was in the neighborhood and decided to swing by, only to encounter rude, unhelpful employees. The cupcakes were very small and bland, and there was so much frosting I wasn't even sure if there was a cupcake underneath them. I tried both the vanilla and chocolate ones, and both were similarly flavorless with way too much super sweet frosting-- reminded me of the hard kind that comes out of a tube in the bakery isle in a typical grocery store. If you've ever bought the cupcakes at King Soopers, Happy Cakes are about the same except they have tons of super sweet frosting at about 4 times the price, and they come served with an unfriendly attitude. read more

I have heard good things about this place from friends who live near it, so I decided to go and try them today. I bought two - the pumpkin and the snickerdoodle. First, they are pathetically small. I realize I didn't pay much for them, so I guess for what I paid they were about the right size - but still, too small for my liking. The snickerdoodle cupcake had good flavor, but was very dry. It also didn't have much frosting, but what it did have was super sweet and overpowering. The pumpkin cupcake was more moist, but still not AS moist as I would have liked it to be. This place is amazing! My daughter's red velvet cake was delicious! It was moist (I know, we all hate that word but it really is the only word that you can use to describe a good cake) the perfect size, and just sweet enough. The fondant character was based on one that my daughter and her friends draw. Just perfect and she loved it! Ok, so I'm a little obsessed with this place. I think the blonde girl who works there recognizes me, which probably isn't a good thing. So the cupcakes here are of a dense variety with a very thick frosting - so if you're looking for something really light and fluffy this probably isn't the place for you. If you're looking for cupcakes of substance, take yourself down here. Hey, if you walk, you can even tell yourself it's healthy. So they have seasonal flavors, as well as a random flavor every Thursday which is usually creative and follow some kind of theme for the month. I had this dream once where the cream soda flavor and I got married. Of the current crop I'd say the best are the chocolate salted caramel, pumpkin, and the coffee/doughnuts. Or get ANYTHING with the cream cheese frosting, which is the awesome. You can also buy the frosting in bulk and put it on your own baked goods if you want to trick your friends into thinking you're some kind of a confectionery wizard. They also make tiny cupcakes for dogs if you want to walk your dog here, then reward them with one for the indignation of being tied to a bench while you go inside. First off, I love cupcakes. I don't care what shape, size, or flavor (well I might draw the line there) I will eat them. I found these cupcakes to be little bundles of heaven! I absolutely loved them. I ordered the raspberry ganache and red hot velvet cake and they just melted in my mouth! I don't think my husband got more than two bites of each. Although that is probably his own fault for not fully understanding my affinity for cupcakes. My mouth is melting right now just thinking of them. Yummy! We went in here because my GPS returned this as a result when searching for "wedding cakes" . We went inside and decided we should taste a few things anyways (in case we want to use them) and got a carrot cake cupcake, and a VOV ( Vanilla on Vanilla). We asked about if they do Wedding Cakes and the girl said 'yeah' ... and then we stood there akwardly for a moment while I THOUGHT she was going to say something more. So I then asked what is the procedure... she said to call the wedding consultant- and then asked if we were buying anything else. DId not give me the NAME or confirm a number of the wedding consultant....just acted like i really didn't ask the questions. So, we were discouraged and just left. Had my first experience with Happy Cakes yesterday and it was a delight! I placed an order online (not following the 24-hour rules) and had a response from Rebecca within an hour. They were so accommodating, despite the somewhat last minute notice. When I showed up to get my order, everything was all packaged up and ready to go. Since I wasn't serving the cupcakes until the next day, they happily wrapped the boxes in saran wrap. I tried the Coffee & Donuts mini and while it was just ever-so-slightly dry, I'll overlook that because that flavor was SPOT ON. You think you've had good pie, but then you walk into Happy Cakes, purchase a pie and discover that all that so called "pie" was just a oddly shaped imposter. For my first experience, I was lucky enough to try Pecan, Pumpkin and Apple. I can report a flavor explosion of the finest quality. The pecan was not too sweet, not too greasy and clearly not big enough to support my new addiction. The Pumpkin and Apple will be supporting my expanding waistline in the coming days.
