The menu is a standard takeout stapled to a cardboard box on the counter, behind which sits a man as ancient as the video cameras in the ceiling which for all I know were installed with wooden bolts around the time of Henry V. $45 for two plates and two small soups, no drinks, we didn't have to wait long. The food was hotter than the Boston tunnel in August but that couldn't mask the shocking mediocrity of their beef which swam in a tray of gravy so deep we needed rescue divers to find it. But the real kicker was the soup. Hot and sour? More like sweet and soapy. A science project of blurry-eyed paste. Three bites later it was on its way to offend a landfill. Most of these places serve food that is the same from one spot to the next, usually with some decent flavor, good portion for the price, and a kind smile. Horrible MISERABLE people work there. I went to order on the phone after looking at their menu. Asked for a total. When I realized that it was WAY over, I asked for an itemized list. Turns out that she was charging me $13.95 vs 895 that was listed on their website for the spare ribs. She didn't give me the courtesy of staying on the phone instead kept taking orders on another line. When she came back I told her that I wanted to charge the order on my credit card. She refused. When a friend went to pick up the order, this horrible woman refused to take my order!!!! My friend said she was a real bitch and would never go there again. Very average Chinese food. Most of the fried stuff: crab Rangoon, chicken fingers and shrimp were under done and 'pasty'. The subgum beef fried rice was unspectacular as was the Beef Teriyaki which was almost raw. The chicken wings were 'red' inside after I requested well done. Overall, 'live and learn' all cooks are not created equal. However, the worst part is they treat you like a second class citizen. No smiles, no thank you's and you better check the order thoroughly. They missed my extra 'duck' sauce and hot mustard. There is no ambiance to a purely 'take out' restaurant with two chairs while you wait. Drive on to Royal Garden in Kingston or the Way Ho at the Bourne rotary to get the real thing. read more

Okay now, this is coming from someone who used to live nearby and had Happy Garden as the go to Chinese takeout and has now moved south for the past 10 years or so. The thing is, Chinese food just isn't the same down here. Whenever I'm back in town, I try to make my way over here for a quick or maybe drunken meal. Last weekend I was in town for a visit and out at the Bars with some friends. Leaving the next morning, I was accepting the fact that I likely wouldn't get my northern Chinese food fix before I skipped town. That's when my buddy suggested we sneak away from our group at the bar to satisfy my craving... brilliant. We hauled ass down the street and shared an order of pork fried rice, chicken fingers, and boneless spareribs. For me, the kicker is the brown gravy Boston style lobster sauce to pour over the rice. Everywhere else in the country it's a white sauce with shrimp and it's gross. We ordered a small lobster sauce to share as well and it was the perfect drunken meal to satisfy my northern Chinese food craving. There's no atmosphere in the place and the service isn't particularly excellent but, it's one of the foods I crave after having been gone for so long. If I still lived nearby, probably not too exciting but, still a great take out spot. read more

The best Chinese food I have had in my life. I am from California and have never had Chinese food this flavorful. Great prices and great portions. Everything here is amazing, esp the lobster and cream cheese rangoon and their duck sauce. Literally the worst Chinese I have ever had. Ordered crab Rangoon and beef chow mein. I got a hefty amount of rangoons but they were mediocre in taste. The chow mein was supposed to come with noodles. What I got instead was a box of soggy bean sprouts and lettuce with barely any beef and no noodles. After over a month and a half I heard those wonderful words, "pick up or delivery?" They hadn't had delivery during the shut down. They opened up with just a husband and wife for pick up only. The order was delivered much faster than they said it would be and we were so happy to see it was our regular guy. This guys been delivering for at least 20 years since we moved here. Reliable. Have gotten takeout here a few times. Phone ordering is quick and friendly. Order was filled accurately and quickly. Lots of soy sauce, duck sauce, rolls, etc. Egg Foo Young is pretty good. House fried rice is also tasty but seemed a bit to oily. As previous Yelpers have mentioned, their crab rangoon is a treat: perfectly fried and tasty, and you get a lot for the money. He told me that the chicken tasted like McDonald's chicken nuggets covered in shittay sauce with an excessive amount of water chestnuts. Everybody knows water chestnuts are disgusting. They get 2 stars for politely taking the order, getting it right, promising food ready in 10 minutes and having it ready for pickup within that time frame. As for the food? Pad Thai was excellent(according to my husband), pork fried rice was good, but the cashew chicken was not what I recognize as Chinese food, and since that was my dinner and this is my review, 2 stars. There was a dark "gravy", peas (not pea pods), cashews dropped on top and not cooked in, and not available without MSG (even though menu says available upon request). How great is this place! First of all, the inside reflects the same ambiance of an Eastern Bloc outhouse. As for service, When you call ahead to place your order, they answer with some facsimile of "Happy Garden". After you hang up, you are left with zero certainty that they understood what you wanted. On to the Food, Unlike virtually every other Chinese food joint, Happy Garden has actually managed to compile a combo plate that has nothing offensive tasting on it...the F plate. It is a bounty of dark fried rice, teriyaki beef, ribs and golden fried fingers. Everywhere else has two out of three items you want on it, plus some snot and onions like mixture. And a $47 substitution charge for what you and any sane person would want on it. If your arrival at the restaurant happens to bring you face to face with what I can only assume to be the owner, you are in for an experience most Americans have never witnessed. After you hydroplane across the greasy floor, you come upon a set of foreign eyes so filled with the hate of your presence, it's like acid on your soul. I made the gravest error in asking for another thimble of hot mustard to go with my $50+ order...he said "No". I discovered only later to find that no mustard was in the bag to begin with. Don't get me wrong, I love this place. I wouldn't change it for the world. The food is everything that you want Chinese food to be. Chicken wings so crispy on the outside and moist on the inside it makes you believe all the other joints are boiling their wings. The cook staff looks like nothing short of a gang of war prisoners and there is not a chance that they are paid in actual money. Let me say, don't bother calling there to complain about something because they will just argue with you and tell you you are wrong (for me, more then once have they ruined the rice, pork fried being burnt and house rice being spicy, this happened twice on both). And now they may be giving you the same number of things in their dinners but they are way smaller items..chicken fingers are little, teriyaki is half the size. Not going to bother complaining, just not going ever again..its useless. Oh and the won't replace burnt or over spiced food! I know I think its really fun to have to have my rice replaced.. By far the best Chinese food around. Try the General Gau Chicken, it is sweet and spicy. All the food is cooked fresh right in front of you. they absolutely will substitute most items. I asked for Pineapple in my rice which is not on the menu and he said No problem. It is mostly take out or delivery but they have 4 tables you can eat at. The late hours make it convenient for me I work 4-11. I always get the F plate, (chicken finger Boneless ribs Teriyaki and Fried rice). my wife gets the J plate, (General Gau Chicken, crab Rangoon, and White rice). most of the time the delivery is fast but occasionally we have to wait awhile but it is always hot and fresh. The regular delivery driver has been there for more than 15 years. so I guess they are doing something right. read more
