My favorite drinks here are Grapefruit Oolong Tea w/ Aloe and Black Tea with Cream (25% ice and sugar). I don't have a sweet tooth but I don't feel the need to adjust sugar. Compared to most chains, this place doesn't use grapefruit syrup. Happy Lemon used real grapefruit so each sip is balanced by the bitterness of the pulp. It's a clean and fresh drink. Black tea with cream is a standard to try if you want to get in on the salted cheese craze!! The cream itself is a little salty so my tastebuds were shocked since I've never had salty creamy tea before. But I found myself craving it after each sip. The black tea is also very fragrant; reminds me of the teas I've had in Taiwan. Only downside is parking at the location. I haven't been back to this location in a while so I came here on Sunday and ordered 2 Mango Yakult Smoothie but with different sugar level: 25% and 50% I saw the girl making the drinks, she poured the smoothie from the blender into two cups. On the weekends I always like to indulge in a light beverage. I was on my search for a nearby tea shop that could satisfy my cravings when I came across Happy Lemon in Berkeley. The service: All employees were welcoming and warm. When I inquired about their menu, the girl at the cashier was able to give me a great breakdown on the menu in helping me decide what to order. The drinks: I ordered the milk tea salted cheese with boba added and my girlfriend ordered a mango matcha. It was my first time trying salted cheese and I have to say that I was quite delighted with the taste. It sounds very strange and had initially intimidated me, but like everything else in life, I conquered the unknown. The milk taste and the tea taste had a nice balance and one taste did not seem to overpower the other. I can appreciate a place that does not have watered down milk tea. The boba was also chewy and I have no complaints about it. The mango matcha that my girlfriend ordered was also extremely addictive. She finished her drink before I did and we almost went back so she could get another one for us to share (the mango matcha only comes in medium size and not large). The environment: Warm shop with the yellow wallpaper that makes it feel lively and happy inside. I was surprised to see the counter tops so clean as many tea shops that I visit always vary on levels of professionalism. Went here for the first time today to get my go-to jasmine milk tea and I see on the menu they have soy milk as a milk substitution. Cool. I order and request the soy instead of dairy and I'm told they can't substitute the milk for milk teas.... I've never been to a milk tea place that doesn't do this. Excellent customer service from the person taking my order who recommended me drinks when I was being indecisive. I got a jasmine milk tea and I forget the one I was recommended and they were both so good. I got the default sugar levels for both which was a little too sweet but otherwise the drinks were perfect and more creamy than other boba places. I find it very cool and new that you can pick the sweetness and ice percentage but I still prefer my usual boba place. The one star is for a terrifying event that my daughter experienced here with one of her drinks. In the past we would go to the Sunnyvale location regularly which we had no problems there and we would have it almost every day. She started college at UC Berkeley in Fall 2017 , which she was bummed about not having one close by anymore. She was so excited when this location opened ! She came the first week they opened which was her first , and last drink here . As she was drinking her drink with a straw , she felt something very sharp in her throat . It took awhile for her to pull it out with her finger , but luckily she got it out without damaging her throat . I am assuming they used wire brushes to clean the machines that they make the drinks in ,so that's probably why one got mixed in her drink . I have yet to get in contact with someone in corporate offices about this matter , so that they are aware of this danger . She's so scared it might happen again , so she won't go there or any other locations. So sad. After reading reviews , no one else has complained about this thankfully , but I guess I'd be cautious. Love this place! This location is right in Downtown Berkeley and near the Bart Station, perfect spot. Happy Lemon has some great drinks and I would say it's better than most spots in the Bay. My personal favorites are the Mango Matcha Slush or the Salted Cheese Green Tea. Their salted cheese is a tad bit different from other places, and I really like the taste of theirs.
