The animals are all well treated, the staff is friendly and personable. They really care for and take care of their rescues. They take the time to attend to the particular needs of each and help to carefully match the animal with the right home. When you consider the trauma so many have experience in their prior life, this attention to detail and affection goes a long way to helping the rescues adjust to a new home. They also go over questions, answers and needs of the new pet with the adopting families and offer resources to help with training and veterinary care. They make sure they are altered, have vaccines, microchip and any other care that they might need prior to adopting them out. They also are good at doing reference checks to do their best to make sure that the animals will be going to a good or appropriate home for them. As a volunteer, they have been wonderful to work with. i have 2 teens that i volunteer with and their lives have been much enriched by being able to walk the dogs. The staff at animal friends is friendly and helpful. And the training provided beforehand helps them to know you are committed to coming and being a regular at their facility. They took some down time for covid but have since began opening up volunteer slots. We highly enjoy working with them and i know many people who have adopted from them and loved the process!

But this question is asking about the experience, and to be honest it wasn't great. I have a Loveland address, but it's roughly an hour to reach your facilities. With nobody answering the phone or emails, there was no way for me to put a hold on the dog we wanted, so we had to just take a chance and drive over. With a wait time - once somebody finally came to the door - of over an hour, that means we'd invested at least 3 hours in what we expected to be a waste of time. And I would add that this was not our first visit to LCHS. A previous visit had been completely for nothing. If you think of each aspect of the process as either having a Deterring effect or an Encouraging one, there's too much Deterrent here. I know COVID will be used as an excuse, but that's exactly what it is. People can find a way to get important things done. I also think the price tag is awfully steep, in comparison to equivalent facilities elsewhere. We adopted a puppy for $300 in Austin last year. Why is LCHS double? Deterrent! On a positive note, a lengthy paperwork application would have been an additional Deterrent, and I commend you for not having one; I strongly suggest that you keep it this way if the primary goal is to help put homeless animals into the homes of people who want them.

We had a very unfortunate experience here in May. We called first to make sure that they could…read morehandle axolotls, and were assured that they could do so. However, we took our pet in for an eating issue and came out with the same eating issue, $90 in service fees, and a badly injured pet. While there, something egregious happened (we were told that he thrashed, but a thrash would not have caused the severity of injuries that he suffered through) and the end of his tail was completely torn off, he was bleeding, and had flesh hanging off from his top tail fin, which had gouges ot of it. There was also a small hole punched right through the bottom of his tail. His injuries have required us to take him to Denver twice to an exotics vet, and he is still not back to normal in behavior (not to mention his tail) four weeks later. I do not recommend for axolotl owners.
