Started coming here a little over a year ago because it was in the neighborhood and of course I'd needed a dentist having not established one since moving. My Initial visit was alright. Hygienist was friendly and Dr. Leong came off as knowledgeable and was eager to answer questions. But like quite a few other reviews mention here, she said I had cavities and I needed at least 3 fillings. I was taken aback because while I've had cavities in the past, they were always minor, and I've never, ever needed fillings. She seemed to take offense that I was questioning her expertise, which I can understand, but that surprised me that in just 1 year my teeth were decayed that bad despite for years during my previous checkups I'd get a thumbs up and the usual "your brushing is good, but you gotta floss more, don't skip it!". So, I went with it. I go for the concurrent fillings - paying out of pocket because insurance does not cover all of this, and each time they were painful and just all around unpleasant. After the first one she did I simply asked her, 'if there is usually any discomfort with fillings? I heard root canals were the painful procedures.' She simply said, "I know what I'm doing and have been doing so for xx years." Also, I had pain in my teeth and even now, occasionally have pain when I eat something. That never happened before I got these fillings. Just as she advised I made it a point to brush very thoroughly and floss both twice daily, sometimes I'll do 3. She still remarked that 'if I brushed more consistently, I wouldn't have to scrape plaque under your gums.' Because this was probably my most unpleasant cleaning I've ever had. So, between my recent visit and the fillings, I think this will be my last visit here. read more

I had a great experience when I first started going to Happy Teeth over 2 years ago. Dr Leong helped me a lot with a complication from a wisdom tooth removal at another clinic. The hygienist has always been great, as well. I started feeling a bit judged for tooth stains over the past couple of visits. Comments from Dr L such as, "How's that coffee working out for ya?" aren't really appreciated. I let that go and took her advice on how to prevent excessive stains and plaque, and somehow, my plaque was even worse this past visit? Usually the hygienist cleans my teeth, but Dr Leong did it last time. It was painful and she seemed annoyed with any questions I had. It felt rushed, as well. No judgy comments but she was in too much of a hurry for that. I was on time for my 8:00 am appointment, too, so I certainly didn't hold up anything time-wise. This visit made me hit my limit and I left in near tears. Shame, as I was a regular patient who was ALWAYS on time, never no-showed, nothing like that. I had a very bad experience with this dentist. She is very rude and I very aggressive with her cavity treatment plant. Before this dentist I had hardly any cavities. But once I started going to her she always claimed I had a bunch of cavities I needed to fill. Looking back I wish I had read these reviews and switched dentists earlier or at least gotten a second opinion. Now I have a ton of fillings that I paid for and am not sure I even needed. They also have to be refilled regularly so it's annoying that the damage has been done already. After reading all of these reviews, I agree I had the same experience. She was also very rude and claimed I didn't have insurance once. I gave her my policy number but she claimed it was incorrect, but she had just entered it incorrectly. I would avoid this dentist at all costs. She's after your money and not nice about it. read more

My teeth were happy teeth before Dr Leong put them in her crosshairs. After a painful cleaning she recommended 4 fillings which in hindsight is not reasonable considering I take care of my teeth. It's been a few years now but 2 of those poorly done fillings have required root canals. read more

I am beyond happy with my check-up! Our company recently switched dental insurances and that's when I found this office! (Blessing in disguise) I felt comfortable; I didn't feel rushed. They were really great with everything! I loved my dental hygienist! She was super sweet and very awesome with x-rays as I have tori (bumpy bones) she took great care in making sure I was comfortable the whole appointment. Penny was amazing! She was so friendly, caring, and professional. She took a lot of time with me and was genuine about the interaction. I've had terrible experiences before so I was so revealed. I had to have 3 separate appointments, which I highly recommend, so that they could adjust my bite correctly. Unfortunately, during the first two appointments I wasnt numb enough. I wish I had read the reviews before I went to get the treatment. I would like to say it was the worst filling experience in my life. The doctor said that I have 6 cavities that need to be filled. I cleaned my teeth half a year ago at that time my previous dentist didn't mention that I have any cavity. After finishing the treatment from Dr.Leong, I read the reviews on Yelp and Google Maps and I found a lot of patients had the same experience like this. I had to stop Dr. Leong my last appointment during a routine "cleaning" and walk out because she was being so rough and heavy handed using a metal scraping tool between my gums and teeth causing severe pain and my gums to bleed so much that her gloves were covered in my blood. She seemed to be in a hurry the entire time. (I showed up early for my appointment.) Also disregarding that I am on blood thinners. The initial cleaning I had about a year ago was not as nearly as aggressive, forceful and violating. She said "your gums are bleeding a lot." After this amazing observation I asked if this was supposed to be a normal cleaning and why she was jabbing this instrument so forcefully into my gums and making me bleed to which she replied "you have a lot of tartar." She also asked what kind of toothbrush I used, I told her and she had no response back. So apparently this was all my fault? She tried to give me X-rays at the beginning of this appointment that I didn't need and I stopped her and she blamed her new employee for making a mistake. Again, not her fault. The pain afterwards from this appointment has been more intense that when she gave me a root canal and I can still taste blood in my mouth the next day. That wasn't the first time I left with my mouth bleeding. My previous appointment was a filling. During the end of this appointment she had me bite down to check my alignment. She had given me so much anesthesia (multiple shots) that I couldn't feel my tongue which she knew because she kept getting frustrated on where my tongue was placed because I couldn't feel or move it correctly. I bit down and bit my tongue causing it to bleed profusely. Thinking to myself this should have been her responsibility to make sure this wouldn't happen because I couldn't feel or control my tongue or see into my mouth. She just said you bit your tongue, shoved gauze in my mouth, gave brief instructions and got me out of the door as quickly as possible. Before this appointment she asked why I had to reschedule the previous one even though I had already explained on a message and I told her again and she seemed frustrated at my response and was silent and again worked as quickly as possible through the appointment. Another appointment previous to these she administered so much anesthesia my throat swelled and it became difficult to swallow and breathe afterwards. I asked her about this on my next appointment and she told me it was how I held my head when the anesthesia was setting in (even though I had never moved my head.) While at first Dr. Leong seemed accommodating to my needs and the work I needed, it's clear she takes little care with her patients and rushes through her appointments as though she has something better to do afterwards. She had a "plan" she spoke of for my teeth. Numerous fillings, caps and root canal which I thought we had completed after several appointments and thousands of dollars later but apparently she still had to redo two teeth and put caps on them because the previous work was a temporary fix. Through out my visits she didn't explain what next steps were or made a clear explanation of what this plan entailed. I had to always ask the front desk employee what the next appointment was for. Dr. Leong also consistently seemed frustrated with employees and anyone that assisted her while working on my teeth. Her employees seemed to change frequently. She also had a condescending tone and when anything went wrong she was quick to blame me or one of her employees when it was obviously her fault and negligence. read more

I went in for a cleaning in October as a new patient. They tell you upfront you'll be charged a $15.00 PPE fee for the staff (patients bring their own mask). The hygienist who cleaned my teeth was very nice and knowledgeable. I don't have any complaints about her or the cleaning. However, I have one concern that I would like to share to other potential new patients. After the dentist exam I was told I had nine cavities that needed to be filled. I've gotten my teeth cleaned every 6 months since I was a kid (this spring being an exception because of COVID concerns). I anticipated having maybe one or two cavities just because I hadn't been to the dentist for a year, but nine seemed like a lot. Before I moved fo Seattle the fall of 2019, I had my teeth cleaned by the same dentist who had been treating me since I was a teenager. I'm 28 years old and I've had a couple small fillings, braces, one root canal and my wisdom teeth removed. Before moving forward with the first round of fillings (treatment was going to be broken down into four appointments), I called my old dentist from home to find out of any of these teeth were on any kind of cavity "watch list". He told me to send him the x-rays. He reviewed the x-rays and said nothing stood out to him. He had no record of watching those nine teeth in my file. He told me to get a second opinion before moving forward with the filings. My coworker referred me to her dentist and I went to see him this past week. After examining the x-rays from Happy Teeth/my mouth, he confirmed I did not need to have any fillings. He identified one tooth that he referred to as a "half cavity". He suggested I continue to brush, floss and use anti-cavity mouthwash. He said he couldn't justify drilling the tooth as is and that he will revisit it when I come back in May for a cleaning. He said my teeth looked healthy and had no reason to believe the stains on my teeth were anything but stains (not cavities). He told me I could come in and have them fixed for cosmetic reasons, but he said that was only if I wanted to. I also let him know I started experiencing dull aching pain on the upper right side of my mouth which is where one of the alleged cavities were located. He retook an x-Ray of the upper right side and confirmed no cavities or root canals were found. He suggested I was clenching in the middle of the night due to stress and anxiety. My advice is, if you're told you have multiple cavities and don't have a history of having many issues, I recommend going for a second opinion before moving forward with the fillings. Although I had to take time off of work and potentially be responsible for second exam/additional x-rays, I'm glad I did it. read more

While this dentist office is convenient, the nickel and diming is a turnoff. Three times I got estimates for what my cavity fillings would cost. (I have insurance). Then, after they're filled the dentist charges me an extra $50 per filling because "I had to go deeper than expected." Exact same line used several months apart. I didn't get this added expense when they had a front desk clerk doing the check out process. And now an extra $15 out of pocket to pay for PPE. Come on! Time to find a new dentist. read more

Do not trust this dentist. She told me I had 4 cavities, went to my usual dentist and he said I had zero cavities. I don't know if she's hard up for money but I think it's terrible to drill holes in people's teeth and cause them pain for no reason. Go elsewhere and find a dentist you can trust. read more

Dr. Leong is a wonderful Dentist. I admittedly have not been to the Dentist in about two years and when I did finally overcome my fears and go it turned out I needed a lot of work done in terms of fillings and root canals. Dr. Leong explained to me my options and after 3 months of several appointments my issues have been resolved. Dr Leong was not only really efficient in treating me but she was gentle, understanding, and you can tell she truly cares about her patients. I really appreciated they have early morning appointments because I did not have to miss work for my several appointments. The billing was also upfront and concise. One of the best dentists I've been to this far! Just moved down the street from Dr. Leong's office and needed a new dentist. I made an appointment online and heard back within two hours with all the necessary information I needed included. Came in to refill a filing from nearly a decade ago and I was the only patient at 7 am, which was awesome. Literally the quickest filling ever! Dr. Leong and Vanessa were nice, efficient and professional! Dr. Leong is very transparent with cost and will breakdown the numbers with you. Dr. Penny the unicorn of dentists. Except she is real. We found her initially due to location as we previously lived across the street at Leva. We then found that she was friendly, personable, and makes your trip to the dentist quite easy. My husband is terrified of the dentist and for a full year we had a tough time finding a dentist that would prescribe him valium or do laughing gas. I'm assuming it was due to their fear of liability or just due to irresponsible people who try to get a quick prescription. That is not the case here. Due to the fact that dentists weren't even willing to listen to the story, he just didn't go to the dentist for 3 years. GROSS. Fast forward, and needless to say that my husband actually said that it was a "pretty good experience." That's basically like a 5 star review from someone who is extremely disturbed by the simplest of dental procedures. We have now moved to North Beacon Hill and Ballard feels like the opposite end of the world. However, we will stay with Dr. Penny for as long as we are in the Seattle area. read more

I like going to the dentist as much as the next person, which is to say not at all. But it was time for my decennial check up, so I decided to give Happy Teeth a try. Dr. Leong and her staff were quick to get me in. The checkup and cleaning were thorough and well done. They took care of all of the insurance making the whole process simple and hassle free. Of course when one only visits the dentist on a decadal rotation problems do arise and lo and behold I had some cavities. Dr. Leong went over what needed to be done, what my options were, what insurance would cover, and what would come out of my pocket. As for the fillings they went as good as fillings could be. Don't let this iron façade fool you I hate anything involving needles and my mouth, but this process was made as relaxing and painless as possible. In fact they did such a good job in the process that I went back and had two more cavities taken care of a couple of weeks later. I never take the time to leave a review, but I want to warn other people about this dentist. I went to her for about 3 years (2016-2019) Each appointment (every 6 months) she would find a new cavity and say I'd need at least two fillings. I trusted her because she was friendly and I assumed, as a health professional myself, that I could trust her to have good morals. I have since been to two different dentists, who have never recommended fillings to me. I wish I had taken the time years ago to get a second opinion before getting the "cavities" filled. I now have MANY shallow fillings that will at some point wear down and need to be replaced. I always had a good experience with the dentist's dental hygienists, but Dr. Leong is not to be trusted. The receptionist named Tanya is very rude during the phone call. I was trying to find a time slot that works so I called her multiple times. She just said "we have talk about this so many times, what's wrong with you?" And she sounded very impatient as if patients are idiots. The dentists are nice. You guys are doing a great jobs taking care of patients as dentists, but when it comes to customer service, it is disappointing. Happy Teeth is just an amazing dentistry. I've been a patient here for more than a year, and the front-desk service has been consistently friendly, appointment-setting is fast and easy, and Dr. Leong is wonderful. Having been to bad dentists in the past, I am glad a place like Happy Teeth actually exists. My partner has also gone in for some good visits. He got several cavities identified and filled within days. He had a bad toothache at one point and was able to set an appointment the same day to get it checked out and fixed - so awesome. For some reason I'm really sensitive to dental tools, especially things that whir and buzz at high frequencies. Dr. Leong used a new buzzy tool to remove plaque during my last visit, in lieu of the usual scraping-and-wiping method. It was faster, but it also made my hairs stand up and my skin shiver. I get the sense that, like most dentists, the Dr. has developed a keen focus on teeth which allows her to ignore things like random muffled noises from a protesting patient. I am taking my cue from her and striving to be more resilient. I'll continue going to Happy Teeth for as long as I'm a north end resident. Terrible! At first, they told me I need deep cleaning, and my insurance covers it. They also told me many other problems, but I said I just want to do the deep cleaning, because the insurance covered it. After deep cleaning, one day the bill was coming, I checked it, it says I have to pay the all , because my insurance doesn't cover even the deep cleaning.It was very expensive. Thoroughly impressed! This is the best experience I've had going to a dentist. Dr. Leong and her staff were very thorough with my examination and cleaning, and they were also very kind. Vanessa cleaned my teeth. She was very gentle (even with X-rays which usually cut my gums) and also explained some technique for hitting the difficult spots. Dr. Leong explained what we were looking at on my X-rays, and took extra time to make sure that all my questions were answered. I thought about maybe getting my teeth whitened but after the cleaning, they were so white and sparkly, I didn't need to! Everything about this experience was great. I've had bad similar experiences to some of the other reviewers (Jia, Anna, etc.), the dentist directs her staff to upsell you and push services that aren't covered by your insurance or even needed. I was very happy with my cleaning and service. The office is very clean and professional. I received a diagnosis of 9 cavities with 4 needing to be taken care of ASAP. This was odd since I have never had a cavity before. I called my previous dentist and there were no notes about existing cavities at my last visit. I had an excellent experience with Happy Teeth. I was terrified of the dentist and didn't go for a long time (too long!) but after having been to Happy Teeth for a few appointments I can say I definitely feel better and not as scared as before. The team is great, especially Ashley who took care of me. She's really gentle and understanding, regularly asking me if I'm ok during the procedures and making small talk before and after to make me feel comfortable. She's also giving great advice on oral hygiene and following up on the next appointment. Dr Leong is also very nice, taking the time to explain everything and go through the x-rays with me, and no scolding for not taking better care of my teeth (despite the fact that I deserved it!). You get detailed dental treatment plan with cost estimates and schedules, so there are no surprises. The only thing I can think of they could improve is that they don't have a panoramic x-ray machine, so they need to take multiple x-rays to get a complete map of the teeth. I also had to make an additional panoramic x-ray at the oral surgeon office for a tooth extraction, so overall that's a lot of x-rays... read more

Go to this Dentist. I have extremely high standards for dentists, as my father is a (retired) dentist and both my mother and my sister are dental hygienists. But Dr. Leong and her staff are great. Dr. Leong really takes the extra time to explain exactly what is going on with your teeth. She has a special machine that takes pictures of your teeth (not just your typical ex-rays) that she then shows you and explains to you what you are doing well and what you could be doing better with your dental care. I have never had a dentist do this before, and sure enough, once I was able to see what the dentist was seeing, I was very motivated to improve. If I could rate them lower I would. I had a terrible experience from cleaning to root canal. My current dentist was so upset with the current condition of my teeth that they've requested records to see if they should recommend action against Dr Leong through the state dentistry board. The root canal I received here not only left a broken bit in my root, but might need to be re-done due to infection, my current dentist asked for records months ago, but has been ignored. edit: It's official, I have to have the root canal re-done, since the instrument broke in it, and there is still root behind the instrument. Happy teeth has ignored requests for records and x-rays as well. Definitely steer clear, the work here has cost me ~5k+ to fix. read more

After moving to Seattle, I have been a little skeptical of the dentists in town. I had a couple of bad experiences that really turned me off. Then I came across Happy Teeth Family Dentistry (since I live in Ballard). Dr. Leong is great! She makes the entire experience comfortable (whether you are going for a cleaning or getting a cavity filled) and she is super quick (which makes coordinating with work easy). One thing I really appreciate is the fact that she doesn't pitch unnecessary dental work - she genuinely wants to make her patients feel good. Her staff (Vanessa) is very friendly.
