I had the worst experience in this place, please don't get any aesthetic work done by Dr. Chi. On July 4th 2024 I woke up in excruciating pain in my front upper teeth and couldn't find my regular dentist in Lynwood or any other place open due to the Holiday. On July 5th 2024 I was seen by Dr. Chi in Alki Dental (he was the only option that could get me in the same day). When I arrived to the office I asked to get anything for pain since I was having a hard time focusing, but Dr. Chi refused to give me anything until I sign the proposed plan. He took an X-Ray and first he asked me to try to giggle my tooth to see if it was loose, I couldn't even touch it since the pain was too much. Then he said it seem like the root of the tooth was broken even when I told him that I woke up like that and I didn't have any trauma. He said the only thing left to do was to extract the tooth. I was very scared and confused but I couldn't even think straight because all I want was some anestesia for the pain. He suggested a bridge and since it was in the front tooth, we decided to replace besides the bridge, two more crowns to match the color. After I agreed to pay half in that moment ($2,180) (total amount was $4,360) Dr. Chi gave me pain medication. So he proceed to do the extraction. It's very important to mention that the root of the tooth wasn't even broken like Dr. Chi said and what I had was an infection in a tooth that did not have a previous root canal. On July 19th 2024. I went to Alki Dental to get the bridge and crowns done. I did not like the way they looked and felt. I told Dr. Chi I wasn't happy with the result and he said "I like them" and proceeded to cement them without saying anything else and ignoring my concerns. Then he left and didn't even take a last X-Ray to check that everything was fine. A few weeks later I went back with Dr. Chi to have the crowns and the bridge re-shaped because they were causing pain and discomfort, the bridge was too big and it was scratching the roof of my mouth and it looked crooked (I mentioned this to Dr. Chi before he cemented and he got upset and said "you lost a tooth remember? This is not going to look like a natural tooth" and proceed to cement without my consent/knowledge. After a couple months of having the bridge I decided to get it removed and got an implant instead, of course with a different surgeon. My insurance was maxed out and I had to pay out of pocket, and it's funny that now Dr. Chi's office is contacting me to ask me for x rays that need to be claim with insurance....?! I don't get it, I paid full amount out of pocket, why do they need to submit X-rays to the insurance? Sounds like a total scam to me. Do yourself a favor and AVOID this place. This office used to be outstanding, however the new doctor is constantly trying to "upsell" you on expensive procedures... He wants you to use every penny of your insurance benefits. He trys to convince you that work is immediately needed, when it actually isn't. That's dishonest. Also, their bookkeeping is really poor. I just received a bill almost 2 years AFTER a specific procedure! Their excuse?... "We just overlooked some of the additional charges." This office also has a hard time retaining staff... Every time I go in, there are staff that have been "replaced".... which is telling about the work environment. In looking at other reviews, I see that none of this is new.... so, I am researching who I can report the billing issues to.... definitely the BBB and possibly the ADA and the WA state insurance commissioner. I've been going to alki dental for the past three years. They've been really wonderful. I had my wisdom teeth pulled last year, a deep anesthetic cleaning this year, and also finally had my veneers and gum contouring surgery done. Alki dental has great payment options for treatments! Since I have to give one star, I'm going to just go right ahead and dedicate it to the staff at Alki Dental, NOT THE DENTIST. The staff is all very friendly and worth having a better leader. Hanbit Chi is a fraud. Big scam artist. Overbills. Over exaggerates treatments. He's obnoxious and condescending towards his patients. Tried to give me lessons on teeth like I was a 5 year old and basically selling me on doing over $5k worth of work to my mouth. When I started crying he was practically yelling at me. I only went to him because he's close to my house and my regular dentist retired. So, after telling me I need all this treatment and having me at his office to replace a crown UNSUCCESSFULLY for the 8th visit, I called it quits. What a ridiculous place of business. Sending me an insane amount of emails, text messages, I'm getting tons of ads from Facebook and Instagram now, surveys and I get snail mail. All of these things BEGGING me to give a positive review. First of all, before he did anything at all he asked me himself to go on and give a 5 star review. That's just out of line. How could you ask a stranger to lie and give you a good review before you have done anything for them? So of course I waited till I had a service and I'm glad I waited because it was a horrendous experience. I finally saw another dentist the same day I walked out and that guy is redoing all the xrays and exam for free and referred me for my root canal that day. No waiting at all. I'm working through a payment plan for the root canal with the endodontist because HANBIT CHI used ALMOST ALL of my dental insurance without even fixing my ONE TOOTH. I had been seeing him since mid August, had the permanent crown on September 3rd and went back 4 times and every time he just said to wait longer. It is October and I had my root canal with a new endodontist today who let me know that all this waiting and aggravation brought my root inflammation to a 10 on a scale of 1-10. Luckily he did amazing work and has hopefully fixed what Hanbit Chi was doing besides being busy billing me and sending out marketing messages. I missed a ton of work and I had nothing to show for it except a guy who literally took my credit card from my hand prior to working on my mouth and a worse tooth than when I had walked in the door. RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. Side note, before we were sure he was a terrible dentist, my husband went for a cleaning and checkup during this 2 month time period and they estimated almost $8k of work for him. I would be vary wary of this place - I went after missing a year of dentists appointments, and had no cavities. However, the dentist told me that my two fillings were worn out, and needed to be replaced. $500 later, I had new fillings, not a big deal. For background, i'm almost 40 and have had two cavities in my entire life (these fillings from my early 20s). He also told me that sonicare toothbrushes and 'normal' colgate toothpaste wear down your enamel, and told me to buy a different brand of tooth paste (which this place sells funny enough). They were not pushy, but this seemed odd - as every other dentist i have ever talked to swear by sonicare. I go back 6 months later for my regular cleaning and the dentist tells me one of my teeth is cracked, and shows me via a camera what is apparently a crack in my tooth. They quote me $1500 - at this point, i'm suspect - after a lifetime of needing almost no dental work, two appointments in a row require dental work? So i went for a second opinion, where they took x rays. The second dentist said there was nothing wrong with my 'cracked' tooth, and showed me the x rays to prove it. I last went to alki dental ~18 months ago, and they keep calling me to schedule a checkup, even though I asked them to stop contacting me. They even went so far as to call me twice in a 5 minute period this morning because I didn't pick up. The experience of the doctor either not knowing that a tooth wasn't cracked, or lying about it makes me suspect about my replaced fillings - webmd says amalgam fillings last 10-15 years or longer, and its been around 10 years since my fillings were initially put in - so it could have been ok. I would never go to this place again - and they say you need dental work, get a second option. read more

GUM GRAFTING: GET A SECOND OPINION If you were told you need gum grafting, I strongly encourage you to get a second opinion with an actual periodontist (not a dentist who acts like a periodontist but never completed the extra schooling.) I was told I would need gum grafting in two areas because I "brush too hard." I brush everyday, morning and night with Sensodyne, floss every night and use Act mouthwash. My husband went in at a later date and got the same exact speech and was told he needed grafting as well. We both went to different dentists and both got second opinions and both professionals said we absolutely do not need this. My hunch is that since it's considered a "major care" in the dental insurance world, it doesn't cost the patient too much but the dentist gets a lot from insurance. This procedure baffled me. Surgery at a dental office? They assured me they do these at least once a day. PLEASE! He also tried to frighten me by saying I could lose the tooth and strongly recommended to both of us on separate occasions this CX brand tooth paste for a whopping $14 for a TINY tube that they conveniently sell right there. Also the Nimbus toothbrush. We both assumed he must be getting kickbacks for these products. When I told my periodontist about Alki Dental's gum grafting process, he was clearly distraught. I was told they'd draw blood from me, put it in a machine that splits up the cells in blood which would allow them to use my own blood cells to bond the donor gum to my gum. (Donor gum?? gross!! - although they did say they could use my own gum tissue but it would be sore but WTF?!) My periodontist said that the procedure could be done without that fancy machine and the machine was an extra business expense for them thus reason to charge more to patient. Regardless of the shady stuff listed above, I think Dr. Chi is a nice guy... However there were times he gave me attitude and made me very uncomfortable. For example, as I was leaving one of my appointments, he asked me my marital status, if I currently have children and if I plan to reproduce. Dr Chi is very aggressive in pressuring you to have services you might not comfortable with. When I did not agree with him he proceeded to poke harder at my teeth than any dentist has done before. My teeth hurt for several days afterward, which has never happened to me. With so many great dentists out there I would never suggest him to anyone. read more

There are many reasons my husband and I both stopped coming here: first, I found Dr Chi to be condescending. I'm a health professional myself and was disturbed by the way he would ask questions and treat you like a punished child for finding cavities. Second, every appt seemed like one long sales pitch. He claims every toothpaste other than the specific, overpriced one they sell at the office is bad for your teeth. Mostly, we were disappointed with what we found with billing. After establishing care there, he insisted I pay the full bill right away despite realizing I left my FSA card at home. I asked if I could leave my credit card there, run home and get my FSA card and they were firm that I had to pay it all there. What was even worse was that Dr Chi came to the front of the office himself and made me pay. I paid the full amount then when I took a closer look at home, I realized they charged me my deductible as a line item (not going towards any treatment). After calling them and explaining several times what a deductible was, they refunded the $150. My husband also recently received a bill 1.5 years after seeing the dentist! (We are still investigating this and have not heard back after phone calls and emails to their office over the last few weeks). Last but not least, the cavity he filled for me (which wasnt bothering me one bit before I got it filled) bothered me for months afterwards. another dentist at the office tried to fix it when I gave them another chance but ultimately I had to go somewhere else. Dr. Chi has been my dentist for over a year now and i couldn't be happier. he has repeatedly gone above and beyond expectations in ensuring my comfort. i had multiple procedures on a few different teeth and had a speedy and easy recovery from all of them. any pain issues i had were addressed immediately even after hours and on the weekend. the staff is like a family and everybody is equally accommodating and kind. the view is also a huge plus! best view i've ever had from any dr office! if you're looking for a great dentist office look no further, Alki Dental is the best! read more

Bret, the dentist, is a nice guy, and so is the staff. However, he found more issues wrong with my teeth on my first "routine" visit than regular Seattle well respected dentist have done over the last 7 years; Alki Dental then presented me with a "much need to do list" of $5,000, pushed by the gal receiving payments, also pushing cash payment. I have gone to 2 other high scale Seattle dentists thereafter (including my old dentist, who I have used over the last 7 years - I go twice per year - always), without telling them about the Alki Dental findings; (only informed them after the fact), and NONE of the issues found by Bret could be proven or found. I am tempted to call this a scam - but I'm sure he is good as a dentist; maybe a little too pro-active.. Too bad - location is great for West Seattle Admiral residents. I have dental anxiety, dental phobia whatever you want to call it. I sweat profusely in the chair to the point that an extra set of clothes is required, not just suggested, but required after the appointment. I've even been known to leave mid appt simply out of anxiety. Must tell you that Alki Dental does everything possible to keep you comfortable and relaxed. They'll try every single possible solution to make sure that you don't have any pain. Dr. Shupack is sweet and charming and will always check in to make sure that you are ok. Their office is right on Alki they have a zen garden to play with and massage chairs in the waiting room and they play lots of Jazz. The place is decorated with the good Dr.'s artwork and is just really pleasant. Great view and the best toothbrush ever. I love the convenient location, pleasant view, and friendly staff, but what is new is Dr. Chi's attention to products and patient convenience. He recommended low abrasive toothpaste and gave me samples of local, sustainable floss. The best is the toothbrush. The free sample brush they give you with the cleaning is the best I've ever used. BEWARE! Their introduction offer is a scam. They target folks who do not have dental insurance and tell them they need work that insurance would not approve. I went in for their killer deal and after my check up and Xrays, the doctor pulled me into a separate room, dedicated for sales, and then pitched me like he was selling a time-share. He told me I needed eight crowns. Since that would be thousands of dollars, I told him I would get the work done over the next year and asked him which ones I should get fixed first. He told me they were all an emergency situation, which seemed odd, because they weren't bothering me and I am one of those weirdos who flosses every single day. So I told him I thought I'd better add dental insurance back onto my health plan and then get the work done. He discouraged that, which seemed highly suspicious. I made an appointment for my old family dentist (a very reputable, great dentist) for a second opinion. It took me over a month to get my Xrays from Alki Dental. They told me they had sent them twice when they had not. When my family dentist finally received the Xrays from Alki Dental, it was confirmed that I did not to need to have the work done - not a single crown! I can't believe I almost fell for that scam. The dentist and the dental staff are nice, but, I've run into issues every time I've been in the office. Once in particular, a cavity was overfilled and I spent the night up in severe pain once the anesthetic had worn off. In addition, I was surprised at the amounts charged.....other dentists that I've been to (with just as quality of care) charge a considerable amount less. Dr. Chi and his staff are great. I recently had my wisdom teeth removed and having a mild dental phobia I was pretty anxious about it. Dr. Chi assured me it would be easy and painless. I didn't really believe him but it turns out he was right. I'm honestly astounded with how smoothly it went. The procedure was quick and afterwards there was almost no pain, the next day I felt like I would have been fine to have gone back to work if I had needed to. My wife even said she wished Dr. Chi had removed her wisdom teeth since her experience with a different dentist was not nearly as pleasant as mine. read more

Just had another visit at Alki dental and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Chi fixed my front teeth and also did a bone graft- I can smile again! Due to jaw dislocations, I have to have IV sedation for every visit and he is one of the only dentists that do this. He does as much work as possible during each visit, in order to try to keep the cost down for me. All of his staff are wonderful, caring workers. I just wish I had found him years ago! The rest of my family is now going to him and have been thrilled with the care they've received there. I strongly recommend Alki dental to anyone needing dental work- with or without sedation. Very bad experience. I have gone to the dentist every 6 months since I grew my first tooth and I have never had pain after a cleaning. When I left here not only were my gums super sore, but my teeth actually hurt. The doctor showed me x rays and told me I had 2 cavities, I couldn't see them, and I studied skeletal forensics in college. He also told me I needed extensive work done, $3000.00 plus. I was not interested in having this "necessary" work done. He refused to give me a price to fix the cavities. He said I should understand how important the "necessary" work is and he was not going to bother fixing the cavities unless I had everything done. He also told my husband he had 2 cavities. My husband and I just went to a new dentist. I did not have any cavities and the $3000 plus work Alki Dental told me I needed was complete nonsense. My teeth are in great shape and perfectly healthy. My husband had a single small cavity, not 2. The new dentist is charging half what Alki Dental was try to charge to fix a single cavity. Quite frankly, I believe this place is a large scam. What dentist invents thousands of dollars worth of problems and then refuses to fix legitimate issues? The doctor and his staff all spoke to me like I was an idiot. I assume they speak to everyone like this hoping that someone buys the bull they are selling. Don't waste your time or money. Wow! Dr.Shupack is professional, thorough and a wonderful man. Hi support staff has clearly bought into the business model and are all cheerful, professional, and provide lengthy explanations for everything about to happen or that has happened. Peppy music throughout the very clean office is great, as is the strange eye-bending, excellent-distraction art on the ceilings. Lastly, the scheduling person was AMAZINGLY communicative with regards to insurance and the best way to strategically use it. My daughters and I have been going to Alki Dental for at least 5 years now and we've always had a good experience. The hygienists are all warm and really good with kids, as well as efficient and friendly with me. Bret is a very kind and authentic person who has gone out of his way to support me and my girls with our needs. I was in recently for my daughter to get her first (very tiny) filling and he gave me a head, neck and face massage to help me get rid of a sinus infection. The staff here is nice and Dr. Hanbit is far better than the last guy. He patiently explains procedures and recommendations. Kelly (in billing) is also very accommodating and thorough. However, I've had two bad experiences with Alki Dental. The first was a lack of professionalism and was on the part of the last owner so I won't describe it. My most recent negative experience was last week. I received two reminder texts and an email to confirm my appointment. I thought it was strange that the reminders said it was two appointments back to back but I called, got confirmation and went in. When I got there the newer front desk person said I was more than two hours early. I showed her the reminder text and she told me the dentist wouldn't be in for two hours, which was a fairly big inconvenience. She said the soonest she could reschedule me for the time I wanted was a month away. I politely said ok but wasn't very happy when I left. My brother recommended Alki Dental years ago but I lived too far south to make the switch but unfortunately I recently had several issues back to back and my brother once again recommended I go see Dr. Shupack. He got me out of the pain quickly and and somehow was able to fix everything in a single visit - both times actually.
