I was staying with the family at a Best Western in Chesterton for a couple of days, and I was looking for a good place within walking distance for lunch. Happy Wok showed up on my Yelp at four stars, and I was excited going in. I ordered the Hunan Chicken and my son went with the Mongolian Beef. Both were from the lunch menu and both were labeled as spicy. I took one bite of mine and I immediately knew that there was zero spice. Additionally, there was zero flavor. I'm saying tasteless. To add insult to injury, the chicken was rubbery and the vegetables were undercooked and stiff. Very difficult to eat. So, I figured I had ordered the wrong meal for the day. Surely my son's meal of Mongolian Beef was better. Wrong. No spice. No flavor. Beef was rubbery. Hard vegetables. Those poor vegetables didn't even have enough cook time to soak in that lack of flavor. Luckily we had a side of rice and an egg roll to salvage at least something from this meal, right? Nope. They equaled the main meal with their total lack of flavor. It was a sad walk back to the Best Western from Happy Wok. I really wish it was good. The service was excellent. The owners seem super nice. I'm giving two stars just because of them. But this one is an avoid in my book. read more

What a disappointment...this food was absolutely terrible. The pan fried pot stickers were soggy and had barely any filling along with the filling having an oddly dark brown color. The chicken fried rice was god awful. The rice was orange and the chicken didn't even resemble cooked chicken. It was bleach white and had a gross consistency....very questionable. No flavor at all in the fried rice. I can only complain so much about each item so to wrap it up, the general Tso's chicken followed suit and was terrible...the only thing that was remotely ok was the white rice. We ended up throwing away the chicken fried rice. Do yourselves a favor and find somewhere else for your Chinese fix. read more

This is the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten in my entire life. Chinese food from the mall is 100 times better. We got the fried potstickers and, these were tiny wontons, not potstickers. On top of that, it smelled of old meat. We also got the orange chicken with fried rice and the chicken was old and possibly fried multiple times. The rice was just dark and also smelled of old oil. Last, we got the chicken lo mein and the noodles are so fat, I thought it was udon. Overcooked and bland, and smelled of old meat and oil. Don't ruins guy dinner by ordering here- it was so bad. We found this place near our hotel while traveling. The food was excellent. The staff were all very friendly and the service was great. The dining area was comfortable but there were many more take-out orders than in-house. Would definitely recommend this place. Husband and I had beef lo mein, fried dumplings, and Mongolian beef to go. Everything was hot, well seasoned, and the portions were generous for "smalls!" The fried dumplings were stuffed with filling! Nothing was too salty, which is a big win. Customer service was cheerful and friendly. Wow, color me surprised with Happy Wok! This whole time I dismissed it as a dive inferior to Tao Chen right across the street, but that really isn't the case. Happy Wok is standard American Chinese food, but it is done well. If you are getting dinner for two people or more (or even just for 1 person it might work out), you should def get the Family Dinner. You get soup, several appetizers, and an entree for less than how much getting them all separately would cost, and you get a ton of food too. Anyway, eggrolls and crab rangoon were just okay, but sesame chicken and beef chow mei fun were good. I really liked their hot and sour soup. Lots of the vegetable ingredients seemed quite fresh, and the flavor and spicy level was very good. Service was also very friendly and good. Also, I really liked that among the other condiments on the tables, they had a thing of duck sauce. Anyway, there's like two Chinese food places in Chesterton, so you can't say there's a ton of options, but Happy Wok is a decent one. read more

Happy Wok in Chesterton is very consistent, and the staff are super nice... seems to be a father, son and daughter, and they're always pleasant. They'll make pretty much anything special you ask for, and provide extra sauce, etc. with a happy attitude. The veggies are always fresh and never soggy... the only thing that I would avoid is the fried rice (that variety that's just yellow-stained rice with no eggs or veggies or seasoning). Excellent, I was quite surprised. I had the combination appetizer and the Hawaii Five-0 dinner plate. Both were better than I expected and priced relatively good. Great Chinese food. My favorite is the Thai Fried rice . crab Rangoon and traditional Chinese chicken dishes are great too. Prices can't be beat. Our family of three typically get out of there for less than $20. Stay away from the Pad Thai. Not terrible but if you are a Thai food fan you will be disappointed read more

Stopped here last minute, hubby is a vegan and they have a lot of different choices. The were very accommodating to his food preference, they explained all the different dishes that they had, what was in them and what he can exactly eat, which most places don't do. Absolutely my favorite Chinese takeout! I've been eating from here for a very long time and have tried the majority oftheir extensive menu. Everything is delicious and authentic. The take out containers are made of plastic very much like a disposable Tupperware rather than the traditional cardstock box. I appreciate this small feature because it serves well to keep the food piping hot on my 20 minute drive home. I have only dined in twice and while the food is still l, of course, high quality the dining room does leave something to be desired. I will give that it is well cleaned and maintained, but it is very plain and white, reminiscent of a cold hospital wing. Love the food but would recommend take out as opposed to dining in. read more

This is the hang out spot of my friends and I. Great food at great prices with excellent service! I usually order the vegetable lo mein, and the crab rangoon. The rangoon is always crispy, but never greasy. Their potstickers aren't that great, the crispy ones aren't crispy, and the filling leaks too much moisture into the inside of them. Great food! Always fresh from the dinners to the rice. My daughters love the Orange Chicken which is actually really light, not heavily breaded and just the right amount of spice. Happy Wok is the place to go for a quick Chinese meal. It's not at all fancy, but the food is quite tasty. The atmosphere isn't up to the standard set by Tao Chen's a few hundred yards away in the same parking lot, but that doesn't matter when the food arrives. It's also perfect for take-out. While most of their offerings are very good, but not something to get really excited about, their egg foo yung is exquisite. read more

Happy Wok is very good. Recently they have cut down on the amount of beef they give you in Mongolian Beef probably due to their cost. But all of their food is fantastic and flavorful. The lady that takes your order is very sweet and is willing to help you make choices. Fried rice is just "ok". Lo Mein, hot and sour soup, all the chicken dishes and Happy Family are awesome choices.
