Unfortunately Covid-19 caused Jade Garden to remove their "authentic Chinese" menu which had so many great dishes that I now have to go to Chinatown to get. Today, I ordered some Mongolian beef and some garlic chicken and 75-80% of either dish was onions/scallions. Flavor was mediocre and very heavy on the MSG. I ordered a large beef lomein and got 4 small pieces of beef. I called to complain and talked to Amy. I could tell she really didn't want to fix this but I told her if she didn't replace it and give me more beef I would never come there again. I spen $36.00 there tonight and expect to get more than 4 pieces of beef. She said she'd replace it and add a couple more pieces of beef. More than likely after I get this replacement I'll probably not go back. He'll for the money I spent I could buy 2 roast beefs and make my own which I feel like that's what I'll do next time. There are only a handful of Chinese restaurants surrounding the Valpo area and among my favorite is Jade Garden II. It's as good as it gets in Northwest Indiana. The restaurant is owned and run by Cantonese people. It was always pleasant to converse with them and have them make customized, authentic Cantonese dishes for my friends and me. I especially enjoyed their eggplant with shredded pork, salt and pepper shrimp, and shrimp with peapod. The portions are so large that three dishes for three people were more than enough. The sauces were very thick and flavored, and not hazed like some other nearby restaurants. The shrimp used are also jumbo as opposed to the miniature ones that some would try to cheat of its customers. Jade Garden II is located on Calumet Ave past Town & Country. So if you're ever in the area buying groceries, you should stop by Jade Garden II for some savoring Chinese food. They have a parking lot and it's a very quiet, family-style restaurant. read more

We have been fans of Jade Garden takeout for years but just visited with a group of friends and was very impressed with their recent remodeling too. Very happy to see that the aquarium survived the change which our children always loved! My wife loves the milder items of Moo Shu Chicken and Hot Singapore Chow Mai while I like the hotter items of Spicy, Szechuan, or Mongolian chicken or beef. They can adjust the heat as you request and I always order extra spicy. Today, however, I tried General Tso's Chicken because the menu says "chicken sauteed in a delightful chef's brown sauce" but, sadly, it was deep-fried and definitely NOT sauteed as described. It was very good, and slightly sweet, but not what I wanted (but my wife liked it!). And it is also disappointing that their red wine is refrigerated, not simply chilled. But all-in-all, great quality, preparation, and portions. As a bonus, after dinner our server gentleman, Xiong, did a few magic tricks. He fooled all of us! read more

My girlfriend and I went here for lunch her food was over cooked and the order was entirely wrong. when we called to complain the manager decided to be rude as hell to her refused to get us in contact with upper management so we could report her for insubordination and wanted to counteract everything she was saying cutting her off and not having a solid answer for anything followed up by a "what do you want us to do about it" maybe try having good customer relations offering a refund a discount a free meal or even to remake the food correctly this time. we will never be eating here again and I would urge others to go to Beijing in portage or even just go to China and get authentic food it would be more worth the money and more hospitable then this trash place read more

I've ordered from several Asian restaurants around Valpo and Chesterton over the past year. This one is better than the rest. By far! The service is great, they have online ordering, and the food is served hot and fast. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. The menu is average, but thorough. It has all that one expects from a Chinese restaurant without a lot confusing, infused other cuisines that degrade the experience. Let's face it, Chinese food is basically like McDonalds! The menu could be read from memory by most people over the age of 12. Mu Shu Pork, Chicken Kow, Egg Rolls, Pot Stickers blah, blah blah. Yep! Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt! Well, I believe I have just had my last meal from Jade Garden. The last three meals have been bad. Tonight, I ordered the large order of shrimp with lobster sauce and there were four shrimp, and not big ones. I also ordered a large moo goo gai pan, which from there was normally chicken, mushrooms and green onion. What I got was nowhere near that. Both sauces were extremely runny. BEST CHINESE FOOD...EVER, EVER, EVER!!!!! I LOVE this place and go there every time I visit my parent's in Valparaiso. It is the BEST (did I say BEST?!?) Chinese food that I have ever had-- better than anything I've found in Chicago's Chinatown! And I have found lots of great places to dine in Chinatown. The staff is great too- very friendly, quick on take-outs (take-outs always warm, fresh & perfect) and super nice people. Jade Garden has been in business for a long time and I understand why! My favorite dishes are the orange or sesame chicken- also family favorites. But the pot stickers are my favorite by far. The pot stickers are unique and the dipping sauce is to die for. Dipping sauce has red vinegar in it and sooooo sooooo sooooo yummy and better vs. just a soy sauce. I now have my parent's going to Jade Garden on a regular basis. Like me, my Mom cannot get enough of the pot stickers. (It's the unique dough and filling they use too). We've tried all kinds of their other entrees as well and loved anything we've tried. When the whole family was in Valpo for Christmas, we ordered take-out from Jade Garden. My sister and her family were in town from Cleveland. They consider themselves Chinese food experts. I just recently acquired a liking for Chinese food- would never eat it until my 30's. I'm a picky, picky, "Sally" (When Harry Met Sally) eater too. Well, they were blown away by Jade Garden and LOVED the food, said it was the BEST Chinese food ever (and they've been to Chinatown to dine in NYC, San Fran, etc)! Tonight, we ordered in some food from Jade garden. When the delivery guy arrived, he started talking about how "sexy" my girlfriends feet were to her, making her feel totally uncomfortable. The food was delivered by a black man, about 35 years of age. I was not there at the time or i would have dealt with it then. I called the restaurant and looked for the manager/owner. I'm sure they don't want their delivery drivers making anyone feeling uncomfortable and even threatened by one of their employees. The manager / owner was not available so I'm waiting on a call back. We ordered Kung-Pow Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Orange Chicken, Pork Lo Mein, Fried Rice and Egg Rolls. ALL entrees were soggy and had a light hint of rotten gym sock. The egg roll was edible and the steamed rice was good, but honestly, how could you mess up rice? I love good Chinese food and I hate this place... We have ordered from Jade Garden in Valpo about 4 times now. The previous orders were very good. We ordered this past Saturday afternoon and this time we were disappointed. The Wonton Soup was starchy with very little meat. The Egg Foo Young gravy was too salty this time around. The Shrimp Lo Mein was disappointing as well with 2 shells still on the tiny shrimp and not cooked as thoroughly as previous orders. Everything just seemed a little off. read more

I was a fan of Jade Gardens in Valpo for years. My recent order included a Beef and Broccoli. They should have just called it Broccoli. My container was filled to the rim with broccoli and had about 2 serving spoons worth of beef in it. Previous orders provided me with leftovers for at least another day and had as much beef as broccoli. I called them to nicely voice my complaint and received the following response, "I will pass it on to the chef". Good riddance Jade Garden II. read more

The quality has dropped drastically since they reopened. We have ordered several times since then and there is less and less meat each time. Last night we ordered three different large entrees and each only have four small pieces of meat in them and the sauce tasted the same in all three. Fairly decent Chinese food, probably the best in Valpo, if you stay away from the standard American-Chinese restaurant dishes. My current recommendation is the Garlic Eggplant, a.k.a. Yuxiang Qiezi. Good flavor, a little bit spicy. (It is not vegetarian by default, but you can ask I suppose.) This is one of my favorite Chinese dishes, and Jade Garden does a quite creditable job on it. Another option is the Singapore rice noodles. It is called "hot Singapore chao mai" on the menu, but it isn't very spicy. It is tasty, not at all oily, and a healthy meal all by itself. Another reliably good choice is the Mapo Tofu. Jade Garden has a Chinese language menu! Which I can read only a little of, but I regard the menu as a decidedly good sign. I recognize a lot of Cantonese dishes that are the same as the English menu, e.g. beef with broccoli / beef with string beans, chow fun. I also see a few dishes which I think are not on the regular English menu: Xiamen fried rice noodles, eggplant in brown sauce, roast duck, san bei ji (3 cup chicken). A dish which might appeal to western tastes but seems to be only in the Chinese menu is Sour-hot potato shreds. As it says; a whole dish made up of slivers of potato in a spicy sauce. (You will probably want another dish to go with it.) You can order it in English. Note on San Bei Ji: If you are a food adventurer with a bit of flexibility and have never tried san bei ji before, this would be an opportunity. It is chicken chunks thoroughly marinated in spicy sauce. The spice level cannot be adjusted on request. And most importantly the chicken chunks are NOT deboned. The chunks contain so much bone and cartilage that it was very nearly inedible to an inexperienced person like me, the first time I tried it was my last. But Chinese people seem quite fond of this Taiwan-style dish, so if you are adventuresome I recommend trying it. Note on Singapore Rice noodles (summer 2015): My apologies to the person who was dissatisfied by the Singapore rice noodles. It is indeed mostly vermicelli rice noodles. Very small chunks of pork, egg, etc., plus vegetables are mixed into the noodles. Those tiny shrimp that the other reviewer didn't like are quite common in this dish. There is hardly any sauce, it is seasoned with dry curry spice and some frying oil. The preparation of Singapore rice noodles at this restaurant is fairly typical. If you have never seen it before, now you have a better description. Edit (summer 2017): As another reviewer noted, there was a major change of staff and ownership in mid-2016. Now, I've never eaten inside the restaurant, but the countless times that I've picked up food, the dining area looks pretty nice. As a family of vegans/vegetarians, we love the tofu peanut plate with crispy noodles, fried vegetable rice, and vegetable egg rolls. Oh my gosh, so disappointed!! When I first went here years ago, maybe 12 or 15 years ago, as a dine-in customer with an old friend, I lived the place! Maybe it was because I was with a good friend having dinner, but I have always remembered it as being great food. Over the years we've ordered take out from there a few times, and it has progressively gotten worse. Tonight I ordered a small beef lo mein and it was horrible. The noodles were slippery and oily, the vegetables were hard, like the ends hadn't been properly cut off, and there was very little beef. Like maybe 3-4 bites of beef. So essentially it was a load of oily, watery, almost flavorless noodles. I'm so disappointed. The last time we ordered from here it was ok. I ordered the moo shoo pork, and wasn't thrilled, but it was ok. This time dinner was horrible. We won't be going back. I'd rather have cereal for dinner on a Saturday night than greasy wet noodles, especially those that were barely room temperature. I hope this place shapes up and goes back to quality Chinese food. I'm so tired of getting bad egg rolls. I either get a cold one or one that's burnt. Several times when I was ordering something else, I would tell them about the problem I had with the eggs rolls in the past. The order takers response was ."Ok." Not....gee I'm sorry about that, I'll make sure this time it's cooked properly. He just said ok. I have NEVER gotten an apology from them....EVER. I haven't ordered from them in a long time, because I'm very tired of lousy egg rolls. But I thought I'd try them one last time. I ordered around 5:15 pm. Boy was that a mistake. I would bet my bank account, that the egg roll was left over from who knows when, but at least the night before. It was burnt to a crisp and on top of that, it was barely warm. I think they reheated it and couldn't heat it up anymore, because it would have turned black! How can a Chinese restaurant be so careless so many times? I even commented on their FB page a long time ago. I never even got a response. That shows me that they could cares less about their customers. I have always enjoyed jade garden and compared to the other Chinese delivery in town I thought they were superior however they have a horrible person who answers the phone. I have put up with this many times because I like the food -BUT when A CERTAIN person answers the phone they seem completely 'put out'.. that you should NOT BE BUGGING HER?-have put up with this attitude in the past but tonight took me completely by surprise, SO I finally decided -I do not need Chinese food that bad-. As a person who has owned a restaurant in the same area, I learned about great customer service and making the customer feel comfortable, this person answers the phone like she wishes she could have gone home an hour ago & when I said I was looking to place an order for delivery she immediately says in a very uncomfortable negative tone.. So, instead I called her out and said well do you not want me to place an order I don't have a problem with the time and she immediately got defensive and made me feel completely uncomfortable and she was very angry -was extremely cocky with me -which made me realize how much I do not need to get my food tonight she would probably spit in it for all I know - maybe she is new to the industry or young in general but anyone knows, it's a good thing in business to be busy and before icing and maybe take a different approach when your job gets busy and stressful.... We shared lunch with friends here yesterday. It was the first time my wife I ate here. Our experience was mixed. It started off terrible. The tea was watered down. I had two sips and switched to my water. We chose the chicken rice soup. This soup ....is why I gave the two star rating. How anyone one could have the gall to serve this is beyond me! It tasted like way over cooked rice served in water. There's No excuse for allowing a customer to be served such a horrible soup!!! Then our main dish arrived and everyone liked their choices. Been going here for years, love the value at lunch time. They have remodeled and it is a much more pleasant place to eat, if in the past this has kept you away, you should give it another try. I switch from the sweet and sour chicken, witch comes with an egg roll and a choice of soups, i would recommend the egg drop soup. Hot singapore chow mei is the other meal I enjoy and it comes with a choice of soup. You also have a choice of fried or steamed rice. This is at lunch time at a special price till around 3 I believe. I really like their fried rice- especially since they allow you to add bean curd (tofu) upon request. Cheap and fast.

Although stuck in an older, obscure strip mall; tucked back out of the way and hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for, Jade Garden is worth investigating. The food is consistently good: standouts are Lemon Chicken, Crab Rangoon with that sweet dipping sauce, and Orange Chicken. I was encouraged during my last visit to see a group of Chinese students from V.U. eating here. My only major complaint is that everything seems sticky... yeah, sticky. Nevertheless, it seems to be on par in cleanliness with most other Chinese places and the food is pretty darn good. Big portions, served hot and well presented. read more
