Do yourself a favor and pass on this place. I read through the mixed reviews, but decided to take a chance on Happy Wok - oh boy, wish I would've heeded my fellow Yelpers' warning. I typically enjoy a good "msg greasy spoon" type Chinese joint - you know, the kind of place with pictures of the various dishes up on the wall where you order and a one page menu with 100+ variations of similar dishes sorted by pork, beef, chicken, etc. Although this place was straight up gross! I should've known as I approached this stripmall takeout spot and there was an inch of grease on the storefront windows, stepped inside and just seemed... ugh, not clean. The food: The overly breaded mushy chicken in the kung pao was inedible. Disgusting, absolutely disgusting! Spit my first bite out and threw away the rest. Egg rolls were overcooked, had little to no filling, and were basically just a crisp greasy empty cylinder. Pork fried rice was as expected - yellow msg rice with reddish pork chunks. Not bad, tho not good. Crab rangoon was okay. Clearly, I will not be back for a return visit. read more

Second time here. I just ordered the shrimp fried rice today. I love love love my shrimp fried rice if it's made with bean sprouts and green onions. The great thing about that is if they don't make it that way, you can always have it made to order at most restaurants. Before ordering I asked the welcoming woman behind the counter how is there fried rice made. She began to tell me with shrimp, chicken, or fried plain. I said yes but what do you put in it because not all restaurants make it the same way. The young lady behind the counter working on her homework chimed in, "We don't know how everyone else makes it." (Minus one star.) And the older women continues to explain what they put in their rice, which is how I wanted mine without adding any extras. I place my order, me and the older woman continues to talk until my order is done. Not disappointed at all. I can see me getting this every Wednesday during my daughter's tutoring. If I could give 0 stars I would. I didn't want to leave a bad review, I tried calling to fix the issue and didn't get anywhere. She did not care to fix the problem. First time visiting the happy wok, and we were not happy! Got my order to go, got home, it's nice and hot yet no flavor! The worst fried rice I have ever had. We ordered shrimp fried rice and a pork fried rice. Wish I had gotten the lunch special, would have lost less money the trash. I think plain white rice has move flavor! We even added soy sauce and it honestly didn't change the flavor. We also got 2 egg rolls, wasn't much in them and they were pretty well done, to the point that we didn't eat it all cuz it was just burnt and tough. Flavor was there, but way over cooked. 20 bucks and we threw it away. I called in and asked, did you forget a sauce or something cuz it just had no flavor, just plain and bland, and she was useless, said they use sauces and then dead air, she didn't care and we won't be back! read more

I've ordered carryout from here for many years, but the quality of the cooking and the dishes seems to be declining rapidly. Tonight I ordered beef chow mein and it was mostly cooked onions in a slobbery undefinable and tasteless translucent sauce. The beef is some really cheap shaving of mystery meat that appears to have been breaded and fried, then drenched in the same mucous-y sauce until it's soggy. No detectable beef flavor at all. Fortunately, there was not much of it. But most of all, chow mein is supposed to mean noodles, and there were none. A few pieces of broccoli and carrot shavings tried to give a hint of variety, but mostly this dish was soggy onions with rice. Very disappointing. We're going to look for a new place to get Chinese carryout. read more

I used to come here often. It started off pretty good simply because I haven't had any luck with finding a decent Chinese food restaurant in Columbus, OH. Now that I have done some exploring, the quality here is just average compared to others. The sesame chicken was a let done, Crab Rangoon, is barely stuff with filling, egg rolls come out too greasy. When I'm home, this is my favorite place to get Chinese food. It may look unassuming, but trust me: the food always hits the spot. I'm a simple girl and love the chow mein & eggrolls. Portion sizes are massive, which is always a win, and they tend to use less grease than typical fare. More importantly, I prefer Happy Wok over other Chinese restos because the service is 10/10 and consistent. First sign should have been there was only the workers present. No one else in sight. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken. Well I can't say it was not chicken but it was not like any chicken I have ever had. The egg rolls tasted like they were fried in last years grease. I normally don't post reviews but this food was gross. I came home at a couple bites and threw the rest out. Very disappointed. If I get Chinese food, it's usually always from Happy Wok. Since I only eat sesame chicken, this restaurant's is great - not tangy, not tarty, sweet orange, the sauce isn't too thick. Regardless, the food (authentic or not) as nothing to rave about. When I try a new Chinese restaurant, I always order standard, staple items. If they do "simple" right, then other things will be even better. Crab Rangoon and egg rolls were sloppy and mushy. Sitting in oil for way too long. Tried this place when we discovered our normal Chinese place was closed on Sundays. Food was average tasting. The same you find everywhere except the they seem to like to fry their food an extra 3-4 minutes. Crab Rangoons were burnt inside and out and the chicken was very extra crispy to the teeth. I use this restaurant for take out, mainly because it's close to me. The menu is pretty standard, the food is, too. Some of the dishes I have gotten were actually outstanding and others a bit substandard. The good news is that the prices are good and the portions immense, so once you find something you are very happy with, you'll return time after time. They are fast and accurate with your order and if you call ahead, your food will likely be ready when you get there, even if you are close by. The bad news is, it's not a pleasant place to eat. Although they do have tables, it's not comfortable or attractive. Best to just take out. The other thing that makes me sad is that, although the egg rolls are better than at a lot of strip mall take out joints, they have bad sauce. The little packets of sweet sauce and mustard are not authentic tasting and they don't keep any of the good stuff on hand for dine-in, as most places do. So if you love your egg rolls, better go home and use your own good sauce. P.S. Some of the best ma paou tofu I've had in this part of the country. read more

I used to get carryout from here all the time. They provided great food that wasn't too expensive to feed my family. As the years went on, the price increased and the quality decreased. The last time I picked up food from here, I paid $18 for 2 combination plates that I ended up having to throw out completely because the food was inedible. The egg rolls had almost no filling and were definitely a huge disappointment. English is spoken when ordering and paying, but not when there is a problem with an order.
