We typically like pour over coffee and we're having try trouble finding some in Lake Oswego. We thought it would be fun to go for a drive and seek out some coffee places. What's the name like happy rock, how could you go wrong? This looks like it is a cute shop inside but we can't know because they're not letting people in. It's just hard for us to believe that they're still forcing people to stand outside in line. When we asked about the coffee for a pour over, the gal pointed to their coffee beans that were over 4 feet away. The information was also laying on the window but something had been covering it up so we couldn't see that. Everything just felt awkward. We finally ordered something we thought we would like and stood outside waiting for it. It was still awkward to get the amount of cream and sugar that we wanted in the coffee. We were also provided with a paper stirrer that disintegrated in about 10 seconds. it was pretty useless. While waited for our coffee, we had plenty of time to see the signs that are in the window. We like good coffee wherever we can find it and we don't care what people's political affiliations are but we're not sure why flags and signs promoting one group over another need to be displayed in a coffee shop. When we left, the coffee had none of the notes that were stated on the beans. It was disappointing and we tossed the coffee. It was not a good experience but the gal helping us was nice enough and it's great they have several options for pour overs. read more

We've entered a new era where smaller, independent coffee roasters are emerging in many cities. These are now referred as "micro roasters", just like the micro breweries. Many of these micro roasters also have working relationships with the micro breweries in my town(San Diego)to produce coffee- influenced beers such as stouts and porters. I would imagine this happens in Portland as well, since it's a beer town like mine. I must admit, I have never been to Gladstone, much less Oregon, but my coworker stopped in and brought back two types of coffee on his recent visit to Portland. He picked up the Little Bear Blend for us to brew at work, and a small care package of El Chupacabra for me to take home. I was impressed with the lower acidity of the coffee on both styles which led to a balanced, smooth taste. They both had a slight citrus flavor and heavier chocolate notes. Flavors were not complex really, just very smooth similar to cold brew coffee. Not sure when I can make it up this way, but I do have a nephew that lives outside of Eugene, so I told him to check it out if he's in the area. How have I not rated Happyrock coffee yet? My go-to order has been the Mexican Mocha, it's delightful. They have plenty of options for alternative milk. During the summer months, they make lavender lemonade! Lately, I haven't been able to make it to the shop so I signed up for a subscription. [1] Happyrock Coffee is a little out of the way, but so worth the effort. A micro roaster in the sleepy little town of Gladstone, close to the river. I regularly drive along McLoughlin Blvd. and consider it an ugly blur between Oregon City and Milwaukie. Just a few blocks off the main drag and it is like going back in time to a small downtown filled with taverns and vintage gas stations. I imagine this is what Milwaukie looked like before the recent gentrification. The owner, Lisa, roasts small batches of beans and makes very good coffee drinks. I've had an equally good experience with other staff. There are a few food items, including baked goods from Two Girls Catering and pizza from DaVinci's. They also have Pop Tarts (2 for a $1). The indoor space is incredibly small and dominated by the roaster. It feels more like a funky living room, than a retail space. No complaints. When I want the world to slow down and have a nice cup of coffee in a quirky environment, this is a fantastic choice. And if I want a breath of fresh air, I head out back to the patio. I am in absolute shock. This place was recommended to us and we stopped on our way to church. When you order your outside the entire time, no biggie for us. My husband stepped away and pulled his mask down while outside and 8+ feet away from anyone. The employee/owner saw him and started berating him about his mask. Before he could say anything or put his mask back on she started yelling at him calling him an "f*$king prick" and continued to yell at him as he left the situation to get back in the car with our four kiddos. Absolutely appalled. We will NEVER spend our money here and advise people avoid this place. read more

When I travel I love to try local coffee shops. They usually have much better quality, ingredients and taste than Starbucks. From the pictures on Yelp I figured this was a quirky shop with good coffee and maybe some local sourcing. The coffee is not good. Got the Jaime latte (cinnamon, hazelnut and honey) with almond milk and it was disgusting. I tasted it in my car and had to go back to return it. Asked for a regular mocha instead....which was not good either. I didn't want to make a fuss so I kept it because it was drinkable. Also got the double cheese breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, & cream cheese). It was edible. The cheese looks like that fake orange cheese sauce they put on nachos at baseball games. I don't think it's real cheese. Overall don't recommend, especially if you care about ingredients. Better off just going to Starbucks, especially at the price. Side note, you can't go inside. It is filled with junk/boxes and a table blocking the front door where you order. I'm assuming this is due to the pandemy (we're still doing that?) Either way their presentation is really poor. The staff was very easygoing, the shop had a very nice country feel, with excellent coffee. I had an Americano with soy, and the perky, red-haired barista poured it right up, even offering suggestions on other roasts to try for next time. I picked this place out of the blue today. The shop is tiny and eclectic, and the customers all seem to be old friends. I was easily pulled into conversation, and the barista was friendly and accommodating, but not overly peppy. The Americano was dark and smooth, and I was glad to see Stevia on the shelf. Love this place! The staff is awesome Margo hands down amazing barista, she pulls the shots just right even for my delicate needs on an americano and remembers how I like it. Venessa and Christina also rock the mixed coffees and style up some winning combinations. These ladies know their stuff, ask any of the three about the drinks teas etc and they will take care of you. They make their own in house espresso whipped cream. The beans are award winning and fresh even to take home whole or ground. Yummy bagels and cream cheese. I always leave happy. Super cute little coffee shop! They have a specialty menu with some really unique tasty drinks. I ordered a cappuccino and one of the specialty drinks, a German Chocolate Mocha. They were both DELICIOUS!! The cappuccino was on point and the German Chocolate Mocha was perfect, just enough syrup without being too sweet. Happyrock is a great little coffee shop that knows what it's doing! They have some delicious looking drinks on their menu...lavender limeade, balsamic strawberry italian soda and horchata with espresso. I ordered my usual...an iced americano! I feel a little guilty since I probably won't ever make my way out here again, but the americano was delicious! The barista with purple hair knows how to pull great shots! Indoor and outdoor seating. Home-y and lived-in feeling. Possibly an old house? I'm here at 12:45 on a sunny Thursday afternoon. It's pretty empty, but it could be due to this weather! There is only one pastry left...a chocolate croissant. So either this place is so popular that they are sold out, or they don't start with many pastries in the first place. I went here for coffee a long time ago and haven't been back since, although my wife has (and liked it). I'll say this: whoever served me at the time was very nice and friendly. So service is good... I just don't like their coffee. They like to roast dark, and I like light. At the time, I faulted them for it (with a lower rating), but now that I understand roasting more, I realize there's nothing wrong with what they're doing. Some coffees are best dark, and they just prefer those coffees. The only reason I'm not raising the rating to 5-star (which was deserved otherwise) is that, when I went many months ago, the coffee beans didn't have roast dates on them. Even if they really are fresh, it always helps knowing how old the coffee is. Anyway, I think it's great that the community likes them, and as they're friendly, I say why not just go try them if you're hankering for coffee and in the area? read more

Stopped here mid-bike ride since I'd seen it referenced as the only coffee shop in the tiny township of Gladstone (it was also referenced as "excellent" in my Biking Portland). I'm not a coffee drinker and was actually hoping for a good pastry, but the pastry case was pretty empty and that's clearly not the focus at Happyrock. However, the ginger-peach tea was fresh-brewed and delicious and the gal at the counter could not have been friendlier. It's a tiny shop, curiously cluttered but totally inviting. On this Sunday morning, there was a (local?) folksinger strumming and singing away for the three patrons present--he was really good!
