I've seen good, great, disappointing, & have heard/watched videos of horrible things. It's totally understandable why people are apprehensive. I would only want Better-Than-The-Best for my loved ones who worked so hard raising me & my siblings to have every opportunity to thrive. (In all honesty, I can't bare thinking of ANYONE taking care of my loved ones better than me... but I've seen & experienced enough to realize, I can't do it all & there are quality places that can help.) I HIGHLY recommend you check out ANY of the Pacific Sunrise Homes. Call them! Visit! See for yourself & ask about their homes all over southern california & where they're expanding. The genuine FAMILY-style care in these homes are so uplifting & comforting to see & experience. They don't feel like facilities. They certainly don't smell like most elderly homes I've been to (with all do respect). They're always so clean & smell of essential oils. The staff are incredibly loving, patient, hard-working, creative, & so clearly passionate about every client, relative, & visitor that comes into any of the homes. Everyone eats together at meal times: staff, clients, relatives, guests. Everyone participates in the activities & always seem to be laughing & truly having fun in the numerous parties. The food is always freshly made from weekly groceries. It's literally like my grandparents homes! It's homey & welcoming. It's AWESOME to see the residents so active & not just left in front of tv's or lonely rooms. Nursing facilities really break my heart seeing how little interaction many of the clients seem to get from their jaded reactions to people greeting them. The residents in Pacific Sunrise Homes seem so much more lively & it shows how accustomed they are to being spoken to & interacted with whether they struggle with Alzheimer's or speak at all, the smiles & openness says so much about their care. It's a big thing to have such involved management, evident in how the owner shows up & is well known all over LA & San Bernardino County... the amazing upkeep shows how well trainings are maintained... yet, to have such cooperative & assertive staff is such a rare find & so deeply appreciated. All the staff of the homes know each other & meet regularly so there's always extra help as needed. It literally feels like one huge family. For whatever my opinions are worth, I sincerely hope you check these homes out for yourself & decide based on your experience. I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed! If it so happens their availability is limited, they also refer out to homes they've vetted & vouch for. They always go out of their way to help. Well by some miraculous fate, (THANK YOU Maria Cantoria!), we found Rachel and her family at Pacific Sunrise Home in Rancho Palos Verdes, that surpassed anything we could have hoped for. Rachel has so much experience with so many different kinds of needs that her patients come with. She has a practical working knowledge of medications, from hands on treatment, that certainly helped me to navigate through the evolution of that as disease progresses. She doesn't give medical advice, but she can tell you what she's experienced, and guide you to questions you can ask your providers. She also knows if the outside services you might contract, are actually doing their job. She knew when to recommend hospice for us, and then connected us to a hospice that is nothing short of angelic. When you visit, you might get a whiff of the delicious fragrances coming from her kitchen. Rachel makes fresh healthful and delicious meals for her patients. She cares. We are so thankful to have found Rachel and can't thank her enough. Finding her and Pacific Sunrise was nothing short of a blessing for us.

Unsafe…read more I moved my mother into the memory care wing of this facility just over a year ago and could not be more horrified by the conditions and lack of care that I witnessed. This includes multiple, documented incidents of: 1. bed bugs infestation 2. gross medication mismanagement (my mother was given a triple overdose of one medication, dispensed another resident's medication, and had her emergency inhaler destroyed without authorization) 3. residents left soiled and neglected 4. serious falls among various residents that resulted in broken hips for two of them 5. constant staff turnover and 6. increased dependence on poorly trained temp workers, etc. Given other glowing reviews, my comments may seem like an outlier. However, it is actually a reflection of the drastic decline of Merrill Gardens in the past 10 months. Despite repeated efforts by myself and other families to address these issues with management and several, separate, filed complaints to the Department of Social Services, leadership has failed to properly respond and course correct. As a result, we have been forced to remove our loved ones and place them elsewhere for their safety and well being. Given how Merrill Gardens treats its most vulnerable residents (those with severe dementia), I would highly discourage anyone from considering this facility; it not only demonstrates their lack of care and quality but also their lack of humanity.

When I arrived, she was welcoming and had such a positive energy. She showed me the entire facility, including a couple of available room options. She also answered all of my questions candidly, which I truly appreciate. She also brought in Lauren, the Resident Care Director, to provide a preliminary care estimate. Both were very patient and extremely kind, listening closely to my descriptions of my dad's care needs and preferences. I got a definite sense that I could trust Lauren to be accountable for my dad's physical well being based on her descriptions of protocols for the residents' care. The facility is lovely and spotless and is located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Rolling Hills Estates. It has an upscale vibe, and the residents I observed appeared very happy to be there. It is definitely well worth checking out for your loved one!

Sometimes the cleaning staff does unwittingly throw away esoteric, specialty food given by friends & relatives to my resident relative since the staff is not sure of its shelf lIfe, but the complaint by my relative's earlier claims of missing personal items possibly by staff members now seem to be unsubstantiated. Overall, Spring presently is a desirable assisted living home. The residents are from middle class backgrounds so there is an air of civility and dignity. The facilities are clean with a comfortable "living room" for residents to gather for directed activities & occasional entertainment. My past review and others' reviews were not as complimentary, but under Linda Hiles and the amenable staff, I feel Spring would be good to look into for an assisted living situation. Some units have been recently renewed, Front desk staff does not know how to use their computer properly, all the times we've been there they couldn't use the sign-up program. Lately we've been just walking in. One thing that I didn't expect is good tasting food, I was expecting hospital-grade and I have to say everything we ate so far was very good. We also were concerned that just taking tours with a sales person was misleading. We were aware that people were leaving one failed facility and going to another with the hope of better treatment. We felt uncertain about leaving our beautiful home and moving into this unknown world. We have been at Cogir of South Bay for just over a month. We are going no further. We are here to stay! We are both overjoyed with our decision. Each day brings us a dining room with our new friends. We all have learned to expect a tasty and attractive looking meal will be presented to us. In our past we only dined so well on special occasions at our favorite expensive restaurants. At dinner time I get my wine. Instead of sleeping in late and watching lots of TV, we attend the 9:30 AM exercise classes in the gym or outside alongside the pool. In addition, we now do our weekly exercises at 1:30 PM inside the heated pool when the sun is strongest. Today the pool water temperature was over 90oF and the air was 73oF. The pool exercises included music and aquatic hardware to enhance our experience. I love my daily swim. Thursdays, before dinner, there is always going to be a singer who performs alongside the bar and also comes up to each of us seated at our table. It already started. We enjoyed our drink from the bar, snacks from the side table, and a bouquet of flowers on our table. A resident took the microphone from the performer and did a few songs that he mastered during his singing lessons. Two couples got up and danced. One of the assistants working for Cogir took the microphone and sang Edith Piaf's famous song and sang it French. My hands were sore with all the applause. There is an exercise room loaded with weights and other typical hardware that I use, a game room where we learned how to play adult dominoes, and an arts and crafts room where my wife just painted a silk scarf under the supervision of a guest artist. And all that was in the past few days. We enjoy the trees, shrubbery and plants that surround every area. They were each planted at their full size. It is a pretty scene when we look down at the grounds from our balcony, day or night. When there is a breeze, it is even more enjoyable. We have a pantry, refrigerator, freezer, stove and microwave that we have not yet used. Why shop, cook and clean-up when your meals are prepared for you? I store my socks and underthings in the empty food pantry. We no longer have monthly TV, electricity, gas, and garbage pickup expenses. Since this place is brand new and all expenses are included, we don't worry about scheduled maintenance and surprise repair bills typical of our 50-year old home. Since I was an engineer I focused on the material parts of Cogir. What make this place run smoothly are the executive director and her staff. The Matre D' in the dining room makes each meal personal.
