I go here all the time, but recently had an experience too good not to share. I needed to install a new toilet in my daughter's bathroom, and after checking the prices online at Home Depot, I wasn't very impressed. I thought I would try out Hardware Hawaii in Kailua, because it's close to me, and local family owned too. Not only were the prices better, we received excellent customer service too. Perry in the plumbing department was knowledgeable and very sweet to my daughter, who's bathroom we were shopping for. He even saved me from a second trip by recommending I purchase shims, which I forgot to grab. Even though the store was extremely busy (Saturday afternoon), I didn't have to wait long for Perry to grab the toilet, and checkout was a breeze! Plus I got everything we needed for under $200, which is less than most of what HD had to offer for just the bowl. Great job all around! read more

This is a great store for any DIYer. The staff is friendly and compassionate, it's a fairly clean store, and there's ample parking. The reason for the 5 stars rating is specifically for the Kailua staff. Inside the store my son was busy looking at something and walked into the corner of a shelf that was at the end of an isle nailing him right in the tempo of his forehead. Shortly after, 2 staff members came over to check on my son and even offered to get him some ice for his head. We kindly declined. With him still crying we paid for our things and the cashier offered to share half of her banana with him. All the crying and tears suddenly stopped. The heavens opened up, music was playing and a big smile then formed on my sons face. All in all what makes a great store is the staff who runs it. This has to be my all time favorite Oahu hardware store. Seriously, if they don't have what you are looking for it pretty much does not exist in our universe as we know it. Admittedly I do shop at the big box hardware stores out of convenience and sometimes shear desperation! But when I want service I head to Kailua. One thing I really appreciate at Hardware Hawaii is the staff who are very friendly and always willing to help or answer questions. Unlike employees at the "other" stores who are more often than not an orange or blue blur as they ditch around a corner at near light speed and go into hiding until the next thaw. Sometimes (well, most times) I prefer the impersonal nature of the big, warehouse stores. I go in, I get what I need, I pay at the self-checkout, and I'm outta there without having to interact with anyone. Easy breezy. On a recent trip to Hardware Hawaii (my first time there), I was expecting to do the same thing, so I was a bit startled when a nearby employee asked me if I needed help. (When has that ever happened at Home Depot? You have to practically tackle those guys to get them to stop and help you). Anyway, I said "no" and went about looking for my items. A minute later, another employee, walking by, asks if I need help again. I think I was in the store for a total of 10 minutes and was offered help by 3 or 4 employees. Even the cashier asked (genuinely) if I found what I needed. Wow. Hardware Hawaii looks, feels and acts like an old school hardware store. Their selection and prices might not compare to Home Depot or Lowes, but they treat their customers right and that's why they keep coming back. I'll definitely be back. read more

Hardware Hawaii offered to do a service for me by doing my material take off for my home extension.. They did a good job ordering all of my materials until it came to my trusses.. All the way through my build hardware Hawaii told me to me what materials I needed and I paid via CC.. same with my trusses.. but when they came they were the wrong pitch!! I told them it was there fault and they replied that it was my fault (home owner builder). They did not own up to there mistake! Very disappointed in there customer service. They say customers first! That's a bunch of bull shit.. I ended up eating the cost of the new trusses.. I don't recommend them and will not be using them in the future! read more

This place is located near Goodwill, across from Walgreens. Just a solid store all around. This is the closest thing you'll get to a Home Depot, Lowes on this side of the island! Great location for Kailua residents. You don't even need to go over the Pali. This is Kailua's quick stop shop for most of your hardware needs. The selection is limited when compared to Home Depot or Lowes, but for being where it is stock is actually pretty impressive. In fact I was even able to find a part or two here that Home Depot and Lowes didn't carry. There are a lot of lumber and home supplies to buy for my home project near the future. read more

They are supposed to have a reputation as "helpful" --- They're not. I've slept on it a couple of nights, and I'm still pissed. I needed a spare key made. They said they didn't have the blank. I bought 2 blanks on ebay, but the clerk. AND the supervisor said they would not as it was against "store policy". I asked who made the policy and could I speak with him/her, but they refused. Yes, it was the style of key that they cut for other cars. I offered to assume full responsibility if the key did not work, but they still refused. She made it seem like this was impossible /not something they do. I usually do most of my shopping at Home Depot and have never had any poor experiences with their customer service. So it's my first time changing a toilet bowl in my house that I'm currently renovating, luckily I went to Hardware Hawaii in kailua which is miles from Aiea where I'm from. I was looking around in the plumbing department for a staff member and I guess I caught the eye of a staff member named Jerry. He seen that I was lost and offered to help guide me through he process and even help me pick out everything that I needed to help make this install as smooth as possible, and it even turns out that everything I purchased was everything I needed. Big Thank you to Jerry and also thank you to Mario for helping pick out the right shutoff fitting for my gas line it worked out perfectly. With that being said I would gladly make the trip over the mountain just for the customer service. read more

This is a really nice local feeling hardware store. There always seems like there's someone to help you. This is refreshing since if you head to Home Depot or Lowe's, finding someone to help you is either like finding a needle in a haystack or like having to stand in line and pulling tab #190 when they just called #21. Although at times I couldn't find what I was looking for and had to go to one of the larger hardware stores, I'd prefer to get it here. Parking isn't too bad. Just be aware that there is a lot of activity going on in the parking lot because it shares space with their lumber area. As a result, they have forklifts and employees in addition to customers moving about the area. It's a good place to stop first on the Windward side if you are looking for tools or help with a project. read more

I spoke to Clint in the screen department and had him do 4 of them first. They came out wonderful! I had him do another 5 more. Excellent workmanship and reasonable prices! I came here Bc my friend's husband started a project LAST Christmas Eve and never finished. I had almost $90 of unused unopened material I had in my living room for the entire year. Well, on this Christmas Eve I managed to find the receipt for it and wondered if they would take it back. I went today- just over a year. The young woman working customer service laughed along with me when she realized it was a year, and the system would not allow her to return it. She called her manager krista, who allowed me a store credit. Honestly, it was great. No one made me feel like an idiot but myself, and I appreciated that they were so nice about taking the stuff back and giving me a credit Bc there is always something else I will need! read more

I had to get some shelving while I was in Kailua and my husband directed me to Hawaii Hardware. When I first walked in - I noticed their nursery first. They had lovely plants - strong and healthy and you can tell that they have some first rate people taking care of the nursery. These plants were not dried up and wilted like the ones at Home Depot and some of the other big box stores. When I got into the hardware store I was surprised at how big it was! They had a lot of cool things - housewares, lumber, shelving, gardening items, nuts, bolts, screws, the list goes on. Also they have a friendly and helpful staff of people working for them. I had to cut a piece of wood and the staff there helped me find a piece of wood that would work best for my project and be cost effective. I guess most people in Kailua know about this hardware store, but I didn't and I was happy to discover it. :-) read more

I went there today to pick up a few things. Walked around looking for stuff, see four "workers" standing together talking about the football game. Walked pass them and not one asked if I needed any help. I watched them for a little while, and a lady had to ask one of them to move, so she could get by. I've noticed, many of their workers will not ask "Locals", if they need help, but are quick to ask "others". It has been this way for a long, long time. They probably wish "Locals" would stop coming. Unless your a regular, and know some of them. After going through almost the whole store, having many workers just walk pass me, one guy, walking by, finnaly asked if I needed help. Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!! But I had walked all around the store, was tired of being ignored, and was ready to leave. I go there because the other two hardware stores, on this side, have close to nothing, and have priced themselves out of the market. I've grown accustomed to the selective service, but they do seem to have most of the things hardware stores of the past used to have. We had short amazing experience! I went there with my mom to get three simple things and came out a happy customer. We spent a lot of time at home improvement stores in the last few months. We went to Lowes, Home Depot, and City Mill. I was expecting the same thing, employees walking around and trying to avoid being asked any questions by customers. That was not what happened at Hardware Hawaii Kailua. When we first walked in, a few people asked us if we needed help. There were employees everywhere always checking that you found anything alright or available to answer any questions. It may seem irritating to be asked many times if we need help, but from experience, I'd rather have someone available to me then being felt like I'm being avoided. Great Job Hardware Hawaii Kailua! Since I had a day off, I decided to visit the local hardware stores for supplies to plant an avocado plant and to mount a picture frame on dry wall. The nearby store to my place is Hardware Hawaii located in Kailua. I'd have to say, this place gives the best customer service! I was greeted promptly by many of the employees, but one stood out the most, Celina. She was very courteous, helpful, and guided me around the store for the supplies I needed. Now I am not one of those who knows my way around a hardware store and if it were not for Celina, I would have been there longer than I had planned to be. It was her great customer service skills that brightened my day! I told her why I was here and what I needed to find, not only did she show me what I asked for, she also showed me the different options, gave me her opinion on planting seeds, and even asked an expert on which soil I should use. She sure did got out of her way just to make sure I was satisfied with my visit to Hardware Hawaii. Next I asked about ways to mount pictures on dry wall, I did not expect her to actually take me to the aisle! (Most of the time people just tell you which aisle number to go to). Celina went the extra mile! She took me across the store and again, showed me the different options to mount a picture frame on dry wall. Thank you so much for the awesome experience! This is the closest thing you'll get to a Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware on this side of the island! This place is located next to price busters, across from walgreens and steak rave. They have a parking lot that they share with price busters. For hardware, this is not a bad place at all. They have a decent selection of nails, wood and anything else you might need to fix up a house. Their prices are comparable to your normal home improvement store. The service here is always fast and friendly! The reason this place is getting 3 stars from me is because they have a tiny tiny gardening section. I feel like with all the green thumbs that live in such a lush, eco friendly town like Kailua, they should really think about investing in a better garden center.
