I will not shop there again. I went to find a light bulb. There seemed to be just 1 person on the floor. I patiently waited for him so assist with finding this particular light bulb. I tried looking for it my self & couldn't find it. All he did was was point me to the isle. When I told him I needed help in finding it cuz I've looked... He said he was busy helping someone else. It was an elder Japanese man that was on the sales floor. 1. He was rude...2. He doesn't know how to work with more than 1 customer at a time. 3. He also made me feel that my business ( my money) was not worth anything. Well, I try to help local businesses vs big box retailers. The neighborhood hardware store. In it's prior life, this little commercial complex consisted of a hardware store and a small supermarket. This site eventually became the City Mill location we know today. For residents in the immediate neighborhoods, this City Mill has a magnet draw for your hardware needs. They have decent sales and the staff is friendly and usually pretty knowledgable. They have a good selection of items for your hardware needs whether it be paint, tools, bathroom or kitchen fixtures, etc. They have a decent amount of parking, but it can get challenging at times. If in the Kaimuki area, definitely a place to check out for tour hardware needs. read more

City Mill was established on Oahu in 1899. They are currently celebrating their anniversary, with specials through August 12th. What better way to support local, then to shop during their anniversary! Today I came in for a roll of weed blocker fabric. To my surprise, they had a variety to choose from. Medium, heavy, premium 3', or premium 4' wide on a 50' roll. I purchased the 50' roll that is 3' wide and have plenty enough to use around our backyard. In the past, I've been able to find a number of items, simply because the aisles are well labeled with signage. Shelves are stocked neatly. And if I can't find something, I normally encounter a friendly customer service specialist, eager to help me :) I especially appreciate the native Hawaiian plants that are available for sale in the garden section. It is so important that we are not planting invasive things that are detrimental to our unique island. Plant pono! Thank you City Mill for having such a convenient location, with lots of free parking, and an incredible team of employees that have always been helpful to me! Finding your fix... As a crafter I did borrow my dad's tools constantly for many of my projects to get it done including creating an area to store all my needs so as a gift one Christmas he bought me a little set of tools in a cute carry case that I do treasure to this day as it was the though that really brings the sentimental value for me. To this day whenever I need something and it was a cover for a new chair that I got so that it doesn't scratch up the floors including some felt stickers for a smooth flow lol! Sure these items could be found at our local stores but when it's specific sizes and styles I usually run the risk of running around town to find them when you know it can be found right here. Well, if you want to find your item, going to Home Depot will be the best place to go to, they have a lot of items that covered almost most of your need for construction, however, I make it a point to go to City Mill from time to time because we have to support local. City mill has been around long before Home Depot and Lowe's come to town. Actually, shopping at City mill is much more leisure. Their service is good, the price may be a bit higher for some items but can be compatible too. Really love supporting a local business and I particularly like this location because they have really helpful and pleasant staff! They typically have a good selection of plants (often my main reason for going) and their prices are reasonable, which is nice. Over time, screen windows can take a beating - pests, sun, weather, cleaning - and replacement is just the ticket to make you fall in love with a room(s) again. City Mill on Waialae was recommended to me by my contractor. I checked out other places, but the location was convenient and a great value. Burt took detailed measurements of my existing screens, while explaining the process and timeline it takes (their screen guy works part-time, and has a robust demand for his skill set to make replacement screens or repairs necessary. It would take up to 3 weeks to complete (5 screens, varying sizes). 5 days later, I got the call that my screens were ready! Not only were they perfect, but the timeline exceeded my expectations, and the price was great. When I went in to pick the screens up, Tom W. was the professional who assisted me - with the new screens, as well as with the original screens that I left as examples. I've been a loyal City Mill customer since 2000, always choosing to support a locally owned and operated business over big-box stores like Home Depot or Lowe's. I've made it a point to check with City Mill first before going anywhere else -- that is, until my most recent experience. On my last visit, I needed to have two keys made -- one house key and one motorcycle key (with my own blank) -- as well as purchase some lumber and two saw blades for my circular and miter saws. The store was quiet, with only one other customer at the key counter, so I patiently waited my turn. When it was finally my turn, the older gentleman assisting customers at the key counter -- who appeared to be in his late 70s -- greeted me with no smile, no warmth, and a clear attitude of annoyance. I placed my keys on the counter, and he immediately picked up the blank motorcycle key, saying he couldn't make a copy and that I "might as well throw it away." I thought he was joking, but he slammed the key down on the counter and said, "How do you think this company makes money? Do you think we make money taking your blank and making copies?" At that point, it became clear he was serious and extremely rude. As a former business owner of nearly 20 years, I would never have allowed anyone representing my company to treat a customer that way. I told him I'd take my business elsewhere, and he dismissively waved his hands and said, "Go right ahead," as if I were the problem. Still in disbelief, I spoke with the manager to share what had just happened -- but unfortunately, she was less than helpful and offered no meaningful resolution or apology. After years of supporting City Mill, this experience completely changed my opinion of the company. I've decided I will no longer shop there and will instead take all my business to Home Depot or Lowe's from now on. This review is long overdue. Today Thomas in the paint department solved something that no YouTube video could answer, that the big box store made horrible recommendations for, to the point I thought I'd have to order a new desk and pay $168 for shipping plus the cost of my fav desk. I gave him photos and materials the desk was made of... he recommended paint - even had someone help to find the bright white to match - they opened new box and found perfect color and product!!! They are always helpful in every department sometimes there's a wait but they have great customer service skills - aloha all the way. Thomas also helped me last year to match touch up paint when I was moving out of an apartment match color perfectly and taught me what he needed to match it ... always above & beyond at City Mill!!! My goto place for hardware & garden help. PS they are locally owned and operated. Prices ... you get what you pay for. First photos cost me - time etc I was at Costco so I figured it was right there - never again totally wrong unprofessional solution!!! I am loyal to City Mill forever!!! I went to City Mill because my newly installed doorbell was super hot. I asked where I could find caps for my doorbell wires. The young man showed me the caps, helped me pick out the best size, and when asked explained how to put them on. i needed a button doorbell and they had none BUT the young gentleman said that it should be the same brand as the system. I ordered a NuTone doorbell and installed it overa month ago. It has made all the difference. I appreciate the help that I always get from City Mill employees. It has always been my go to place and I always get excellent advice and help from knowledgeable employees. read more

I always love coming to the Kaimuki City Mill and I just had one of their sales person tell me "I cannot help you," and when I asked him if he can see if can ask he proceeded to tell me that "no one can help me because the person is not at work today." He didn't seem to comprehend that he indeed could help by inquiring with higher management and the inventory staff. I couldn't find a manager to let them know what happened but I didn't have time thus I'm posting my very unpleasant experience and inappropriate customer service here because it's probably faster and more effective. read more

Ample parking. Lovey employees. Good inventory. I went today (Thursday afternoon) to get custom paint. The legendary Bob O. helped me at the paint desk. He was sweet and very efficient. Bob made sure I knew what mix to ask for if I needed more of the same custom paint. Funny enough, his other half and her friend stopped by, and he was informing them where to find all the things they needed. I swear he knows the whole store! Makes sense given he's been at City Mill for about 10 years. The cashier who rung me up was also super nice. She asked if I needed a shopping bag because I was juggling wiper fluid and a quart of paint. Everything was super affordable! The windshield wiper fluid was only $3.25! Pretty good local hardware chain store with great selections and reasonable prices! The staff were not easy to locate but at least they were friendly. Quite a few people were shopping here when I went on a weekday. Found what I needed here - safety goggles, lightbulbs and gorilla super glue. Lots of different choices for safety goggles! I love how they arranged lightbulbs by lumen. Makes it easier to choose the right bulb quicker, unlike Home Depot where it's all over the place. The bathrooms were located in the gardening section at the back wall and you'll need a code to get in. A sizable parking lot too just for the store so it was easy to find parking. I used to go to Home Depot for all my house maintenance needs but now I have another choice too! read more

Let me start by saying the guys working in the aisles where great and went out of their way to help me look for what I was trying to find even though in the end we were not able to find it. After checking a different location and not finding what I needed I looked online to see what locations actually had the product, called before going down and was told they do have the product in stock. Get to the store, look and can't find it, ask a worker what aisle is it in, look again, ask for help finding the item, all three of us can't find it. Was told that someone probably packed it when they were redoing the aisle and didn't put it back out or something. read more

Longtime customer that has noticed consistent decline in service and pricing at this place. Today I was declined entry because of my bag. So, being in a rush, I asked if they would simply grab some yellow flagging tape for me and then I will just pay at the register ... without entering. It would seem like an easy fix, right? They kept insisting on taking my bag rather than simply helping me make a simple specific purchase. I just ordered it online instead. That is just bad service and was insulting and uncomfortable for a longtime return customer. You can thank whomever the young bearded gentleman manning the entrance area for this interaction. You would think a local chain would treat their return local customer better. I will try to avoid this place in future. There are better hardware stores on the island. read more

Service is never "good" but today, particularly bad. I asked a product question, and the employee clearly didn't know the answer. His partner next to him was slumped over the counter and apparently didn't feel like joining the conversation. Employee #1 just said, "I dunno, I guess you can not use it for that". He didn't bother to find out, and I didn't want to waste my time and money only to redo it. Not a bad hardware lumber store but not really good either. The staff always seem helpful courteous and professional. However the quality of their bins of fasteners though convenient and you can buy one, two or more of an item the material used in their stainless steel screws is sub par. The material is very soft such that a electric driver can easily strip the Phillips head out. They also seem to corrode rather quickly so not good at all for marine applications or exposed to the salt air. In other words not good for Hawaii. The toilet hold down bolts are not solid brass either but steel with a brass plating that also corrodes easily and thus makes a mess for removal or wax seal replacement in a few years. Just plane cheap low quality junk that's not worth buying. I do not recommend their hardware at all if you like to do the job correctly. read more

Lately I've been on a plant kick, meaning, buying more and more plants and running out of places to put them, so naturally, after going to my favorite dentist and dental hygienist of all time in Kaimuki (Dr Emory Young and Suzie), I decided to make an illegal U-turn just to have the opportunity to buy yet more plants. It was the plants outside that I saw that made me come in here, because truthfully, without the plants, I wouldn't have come in. Their plants are like what a mouse or rat trap is to a human like myself - it attracted and lured me in, but the great thing is that I didn't die under a metal clapper with cheese flying out of my mouth. The bad thing is, I spent more money and more than I wanted to. I was reeled in like a fish. Being a reeled-in fish is better than being a rat stuck in a rat trap...but whatever. I bought a Bay Leaf tree. I was shocked to find this in a store. I use Bay leaves to cook but never thought I would find one of these trees in the middle of Kaimuki in a City Mill, no doubt! It was so random it kind of blew my mind a little bit. They had some pretty unusual plants too: Lipstick plant, lemongrasses, pitcher plants, etc. I also purchased a Crimson Queen Hoya, which was spelled "Krimson Queen". I looked it up to make sure it wasn't an elementary school kid labeling all the plants and lo and behold, it was really spelled that way!! I have no idea why people think it's cool to spell the word wrong just to look kool. Places like Krispy Kreme drive me nuts. I feel like vandalizing the sign at night with spray paint over the K's and turning them into C's - Crispy Creme...there!! Aside from mind-blowing plants, their pots are expensive, so minus one star. read more

We usually will go to City Mill on Nimitz Highway for our DIY home improvement supplies or equipment but we happened to be in Kaimuki recently and stopped in here instead. The parking lot wasn't particularly crowded as we found a stall right away so this was already starting out on a good note. Walking in and passing the cashiers, we took note of their prominent aisle signs and walked directly to their electrical aisle in search of a water heater timer. It didn't take long for a sales associate to approach us to assist us as we had combed the shelves. Sorry, I missed his name, but, when we told him what we were looking for, he immediately walked us down the aisle and showed us the item. There were only a few water heater timers in their inventory but no matter, we just needed one. Within 10 minutes, we were in and out of City Mill (including standing in line waiting for an available cashier). We got friendly and quick service and most importantly, the product that we came looking for. Supporting this Local Business that has been around since 1899 always feels good. read more

Review #27 for 2022. Wow! City Mill is an example of why local businesses matter. I've been going to City Mill for years and appreciate the great stock of house and garden supplies. I've bought potting soil, bug sprays, and all kinds of tools. Recently a friend built a clothes line for me, and we got everything we needed at City Mill. And I can always rely on City Mill when I need to refill propane tanks. Even more, I appreciate the great service that can come from investing in local communities that big box stores will never have. I recently bought a bug spray with a spray nozzle that I struggled to get to work. When I returned to the store to see if they could help me out, a manager quickly asked me how he could help me. I explained my problem, and the manager just told me to go get a new one - a one for one exchange. I didn't even need to wait in line or anything! These sprays are not cheap, so I appreciate the great service and trust that I just wanted a product that worked. And this new bug spray worked without any problems! Did you know I'm here like over 100 years have great service and everything that you need from your neighborhood hardware store. They have enough parking to make a little solar powered outdoor coffee shop The City Coffee Mill so people can take a break or chat shop talk home repair stuff. It would be in line with image and reputation of City Mill being responsive and better than Lowe's or Home Depot. Now that we can socialize it would be a good time for Home Depot to build a deck above the garden and grow many small trees and noni and mamake and have plumeria lining the river front to add some color to the neighborhood. read more

I had to make four trips to make two mailbox keys that didn't work first when I ordered two keys the guy clearly marked 2 keys ordered and made only one so I ended up getting a bunch of other things since I was there and went back three more times and it still doesn't work I took them back and suggested another technique and the guy tells me he has done "over a hundred of these " well they all didn't work for me! I returned the useless keys and I ended up going to Salz lock and safe down the street and I got two keys that worked the first time! Don't waste your precious time go to Salz instead. read more

This is our neighborhood hardware store. They have pretty much everything the "bigger stores" have and then some. Lately with this whole covid-19, stay at home thing going on and everyone has time on their hands, this place is busy, I mean at times we had to park on the bottom lot because the top was so full. It seems like everyone is doing home projects. Yes I am too as my friend is off from his big job right now so it is a perfect time to work on the lanai. I wish I was as knowledgeable and skilled as he is as he makes it look so simple. What he does in 4 minutes takes me about 10 minutes, it's kind of crazy. I like to think I'm pretty smart and can figure things out but you can't replace experience and I'm thankful he is here to help me or I'm helping him more like, or am I hindering him?!?!?! Anyway back to City Mill... I've come here for things like having them redo my screen frames, getting lumber, to everyday things like fans, lighting things, paint, plants, tools, and misc parts.
