This is Kailua's quick stop shop for most of your hardware needs. The selection is limited when compared to Home Depot or Lowes, but for being where it is it's stock is actually pretty impressive. In fact I was even able to find a part or two here that Home Depot and Lowes didn't carry. The employees are very friendly and helpful which makes the visit all the more pleasant as hardware stores can be intimidating. Because of all this, Hardware Hawaii is my go to hardware store and will always be my first stop when I have any hardware needs. Usually I'll go into a hardware store like the mainland ones (the one that starts with L) and it'll take me 30 mins to get help! Literally had called for help 6 times! I walked into Hardware Hawaii and I was greeted by security as soon as I walked in and within a few minutes someone approached me and asked if I needed help. When I got to the cashier, she was even friendly and awesome! Now that was the best service I got! From the time I walked in till the time I walked out! As a long time windward resident Hardware Hawaii has always been our go to store for all our hardware needs! On most of my past visits staff has always been friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable in there departments. Stopped in today to purchase drywall and sandpaper. My husband was not with me on this visit so the task in finding where the items were and how much was needed was a bit difficult. Had to hunt down an associate to help assist me and couldn't find anyone who didn't look "overly" busy. Found an associate who only pushed me off to another associate due to the department not being theres. Walked around like a deer in headlights before finding what I needed. The most disappointing part of my visit was when I struggled through the store trying to carry the drywall. Had to stop a few times to adjust the board in my hands. Carried it through the store out to my car without anyone asking if I needed help! So disappointed in todays visit! read more

This hardware store is so close to home and they've always had everything I needed for small refurbishing projects or to fix something up, gardening or remodeling, they've had everything that I needed. Customer service is always friendly and I'm always asked if I need help when an employee passes. It's an extra bonus that it's located in the same parking lot as Good Will. I've gotten furniture there then stopped off at the hardware store for paints/ spray paints, grout, etc. so I could work on it as soon as I get home. I love this store! read more

Rick in the paint department is super awesome! My husband and I love going in and talkin to him about our hardware needs. We just refinished our dining room table and couldn't have done it without his help! He helped me for over 30 mins one day picking out the perfect stain. I shop at Hardware Hawaii regularly and customer service has always been excellent... except today. I went in to buy lumber for a shelf that I'm building and was told that I "should hire a professional to do it". BUT, my husband could probably do it too. Well I have studied carpentry and have probably built more shelves than my husband has. So do I really look like an idiot who can't build a shelf out of plywood?! Being treated like that irritates me so much that I don't think I'll be going back in a while. Other than that, Hardware Hawaii is slightly pricier than some of the other hardware stores on the island but they do have a pretty good selection of stuff. I just hope their customer service continues being great and that what I experienced today was just a one time thing. 4/9/2014 Here we go again: I went in to buy wood for table legs that I'm building. I told the guy working there that the wood needs to be very strong and sturdy to hold the heavy weight of the table and what will be on the table. Immediately he asks me, "Are you building it yourself?". Yes I am. Then he recommends me some already built table legs that they have in the store. When I ask the guy about these already built legs, apparently they aren't even that sturdy or strong. Why would you recommend me something like that when I specifically said that they need to be strong? So, NO, I'm BUILDING this thing, moron! I ask again for his recommendation and he tells me me to step aside so he can help every other man in the line before me. Then another guy comes to the lumber desk to help me, and asks the same questions... Am I building this thing? Yes I am. And that's right, if I'm BUILDING something, it doesn't mean I'm there to buy something pre made. Why is it so hard to understand? Please stop being sexist assholes and help your customers. For that reason, I will be taking my business to Kaneohe. The guys at Citymill seem very nice and polite, and have not (at least yet) treated me the way I was treated in Hardware Hawaii. Recently had two very negative experiences with the Cashiers at the Kailua store. Both times I requested that my items be put in a bag, and I got this attitude from the cashier. The cashiers in question worked the single cashier stand near the entrance closest to Goodwill. Both women need to undergo how to smile and treat customers training!! Seriously, is a 2 cent paper bag too much trouble for you all. That said, I am always happy with the support from the various sales people that roam the store. I'm just stoked that there is a place in Kailua I can go to when I need to scratch my DIY itch, and I don't have to drive all the way to Honolulu. This place has everything I'm ever looking for, seriously, even a wine opener when I needed one. I went here to buy paint when I decided to paint my master bedroom. The color options didn't show me a basic black...what the hell, nobody else wants to paint their walls black? Well, that wasn't an issue cause the rad dude working the paint counter said "I can make you a black paint" And he sure did. I've gone back for some gardening stuff. I bought some plants at the State Farm Fair and needed to buy them some bigger planters and extra soil. While there I saw that the tomato plants were only $.89 each. So I took 3 of them home with me too. Everyone is always helpful and friendly when I go in. Wow horrible customer service. Local lady helping us in the nut and bolt isle was basically rushing us. Very rude and no customer service skills. The other employee behind her heard her and just made an irritated face and told us that we made her mad, like we did something wrong. While checking out, another lady at the business line register really did not want to help us, like we were wasting her time. Prices are a bit high, but hey! it's a captive audience in Kailua. It still beats driving to the "other" side where traffic is stand-still and the scenery well hidden. We come here first, before trying anywhere else for nearly all the things we need for building, maintenance, electrical, plumbing, paint and even some kitchen wares. While there have been a few times that someone has had to call another staff to come and help us, I feel that overall, we have received very good customer service, especially in paint department, where I needed a custom color. As for prices, I figure I save the money driving across the mountain to big box retail and I like to keep my dollars close to home. It's worth a few more dollars to not have to wander the aisles of some huge store. read more

This is my life-long best hardware store! A few weeks ago I bought a scrub bucket (Quickie brand), but got around to using it for the first time just yesterday. The bucket was totally unsatisfactory: (1) wheels snapped into place, but first one came off, and then another, when I had already put water and was starting to mop the floor, (2) then the wringer part, which only friction-fitted on, kept coming off when I tried to wring out water from the mop, and finally (3) the handle broke! I had already thrown away the Hardware Hawaii receipt, but I decided to return the bucket anyway, if only to give them feedback on a bad product. The cashier was able to locate my original debit card purchase and returned my money...which I then used to buy a better brand (Rubbermaid) scrub bucket. Ready to mop! Ok I am in here all the time. Typical hardware store, but this is where they absolutely fail. NOBODY has a clue about their products. First time it happened I asked for an extension level over the phone. They said they did not have one. They did, and it was $100 cheaper than the one I got from town. Now I ask for a rotary laser, no idea what it is. While this is happening a lady is asking a longer lenght of 1x8 and dude is playing her stupid and trying to sell her a 1x10 because he does not understand lumber dimensions. The staff here is super friendly and went out of their way to help me find the chair wheels I was looking for. The guy helping me called another location to check inventory when I didn't have quite enough. So nice! Hardware Hawaii is like a local community based hardware store that you don't find very much anymore. They have everything from soup to nuts and a huge lumber selection. Many of my contractor friends enjoy supporting this business because of the personal attention that they give to each and every customer. Staff members are well aware of their products, where they are located, if they have a specific item in stock or not, and if they don't know something they will quickly find somebody that does. This place has just the best customer service from staff and even fellow customers. I've have/had lots of home improvement projects and go here almost on a weekly basis. I'm on a first name basis with many of the helpful staff. They have helped me with everything from gardening to installing floors. Their prices are usually comparable to Home Depot in town. Some things are cheaper at other hardware stores on the windward side, but I'd rather have the better customer service and I don't mind paying some change extra for it. read more

Today I went to the store and I was looking for a magnet because I had lost a key under my seats and a gentleman named David noticed me looking lost and he asked if I needed help and I said yes sir and he showed me where the magnetic wand I needed and not only did he show me where it was he grabbed what I needed took me out to my car and helped me find the key.. I recently moved to Kailua and have been in this place at least four times in the last seven days. Each time, I have been asked within a minute or so by a staff member if they can help me find anything. Returns have been 'painless.' Like all good local hardware stores, usually you can find 80-85% of what you would find at a big box store but with more handyman knowledge/experience and without the drive. Will probably become my 'go to' for normal around the house needs. read more
