Went to make a spare key and this guy wouldnt/couldnt make one ?? He said they didnt do chipped keys but its advertise all over the store and then i gave him a key to an older car and he made the spare and it didnt work either he said theyve been having trouble making older car keys from 2000's and down but he also couldnt make a key for a 2007 either so???? i think he just didnt try/care at all total waste of time was a younger guy clean shaven probably 20-26 straight up horrible at his job dude read more

ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT HAWAII. I'm an idiot when it comes to power tools and tools in general, so trying to purchase these type of items can be intimidating for me. Shopping at Yamashiro's takes that feeling away. The last item I purchased from here was a Stihl weed trimmer. I had some heavy brush in the back if our property to clear and wasn't sure what to get. Thankfully a gentleman worker took the time to go over some of the trimmers they had along with attachments. I had bought a Maruyama over a year ago from Yamashiro's and I love it, but I figured another trimmer couldn't hurt since I could use one and my wife the other. As far as prices go, I really don't know how Yamashiro's compares to the big box stores. I really don't care. I JUST APPRECIATE THE SERVICE. Hawai'i needs business like Yamashiro's. read more

I like this mom and pop shop. I've found things here that I haven't seen in ages. Prices can be a little high, but enjoyed the hunt for old stock. I feel old stock are made better than the newer stock. They don't have a lot, but I am sure you'll find something you need. The staff are nice, helpful and friendly. Came with the hubby to buy a new weed whacker - review is based on his experiences, and he says the staff is very helpful and friendly. He first discovered this store when comparison shopping for bulk sand when we were putting down artificial grass in front of our home. He says the prices are comparable or better sometimes to other big box and hardware stores. They seem to specialize in Makita tools, although he picked up a Stihl weed whacker. As a homeowner I try to save money be doing as many household repairs as I can. I have been going to Yamashiro's for 40 years. That's when Ed Yamashiro would be walking around the lumber yard with his cigar. The cashiers are always friendly (and Patty Yamashiro is always sassy) and direct me to the proper aisle. If I need more help one of the sales people is available. I don't need it often but they have a full line of lumber and cement blocks as well. This is the kind of hardware store I went to 70 years ago that has what you need and advice if you also need that. read more

In short: Per the manager, Patty, they are very short-handed here because people don't want to come to work during this pandemic. So this is her excuse for her cashier's terrible, rude, and aggressive behavior towards local customers who want to support them. Long story (TEA TIME): Decided to do some home improvements this weekend, so I decided to support this local business. Everything went well until it was time to check out. I've never experienced such an unpleasant and upsetting situation as today. The woman working the register had some serious attitude! Maybe she had an extra tough day or she just hates her job and life, but either way, she decided to take it out on me, the customer. I wasn't really phased by that, but that was already red flag #1. I then asked the cashier to do a price check on an item, not knowing this was asking way too much of her. Red flag #2. In her ticked off voice, she rudely replied with the price. I told her I would take the other item and this pissed her off royally. God forbid we don't purchase everything we bring to the counter! Then she sees that I have tiles in the cart and apparently none of them have tags/labels? Normal right? Well since I don't work here and didn't take their training courses, I didn't know that if you purchase something from the "lumber department", you need a slip for that. Instead of being polite and explaining this to me, she yells and says I need to get that slip. I explained to her that I didn't know this rule and that it didn't have any workers down by the "lumber department". This aggravated her so much, she then rudely tells me to take one of my tiles back to that department (on the opposite side of the store) and have a worker write me a slip. Then she uses her walkie talkie to tell that worker that I'm coming. (Uhm, can she not ask her co-worker to give her the code or price for my tile??). Anyways, this is where I'm just speechless and puzzled/upset that she had the nerve to demand to me, the customer, to walk across the store, while carrying this tile, just to get a "slip"? The guy working at that department is very professional and polite and writes me this slip (I'm handed their entire inventory book) and now have to walk back to the check out counter with the tile and the "slip" (book). I hand this slip to the cashier and she does not say "thank you" or "sorry for the inconvenience". She proceeds to ring me up like nothing happened and like I did not just do her job. I should've stopped at red flag #2 and just say, never-mind, I won't purchase anything from this establishment. I've worked in retail before and I know it can be an exhausting job and I can only imagine how it must be today during a pandemic. However, this does not give you the right to talk down to your customers and then make them do your job! After speaking to the manager and she basically made excuses for her worker by stating that they're very short-handed (even though it had 4 women behind the counter working). I now know that this is how this place operates and as the manager said, it's up to me. Yes, that's the only thing you said that was accurate. It is up to ME where I take my business and who I give my money to. I'll do you and this company a HUGE favor by taking my money elsewhere since you're obviously too busy and short-handed. This is not a local company I want to support or recommend to any family or friends. I'd rather spend the extra money online or at Lowe's or City Mill and get treated nicely and not like dirt. read more

I needed a replacement pull switch for the light kit on the ceiling fan over my boss's (wife 's) desk. I looked for the switch myself and found one that could work but wasn't right. At checkout, Patty asked if I had found what I needed and I explained that it was close but not right and that she didn't have the one I needed. But Patty knew there were 3 places in the store to check, and she found the exact correct switch! I was able get my job finished the same day I started. No need drive over the hill. I normally shop at an Ace Hardware store in Kaimuki, Not much selection and the help is ok. Walking into the Kaneohe Ace Store, you are back in time to the old hardware store. Good friendly help that are also knowledgeable. They have a large selection of products in a nice little store. There is a lumber yard. We bought more than we were planning since there were things we knew we would need at some point in life. My first time patronizing this place. I've passed this place like a 1000 times every time I'm in Kaneohe, but was totally unaware that this was a hardware store. I don't know why...........but for some reason, I thought Yamashiro's was like a Mid-Pac Lumber business where they sold stuff strictly for building structures. I was looking for some supplies with my co-worker as we were doing a job at the windward mall shopping center. We were drilling out a safe, and busted a screw in the safe as were trying to breach the safe. Lucky for us, Yamashiro's had exactly what we needed to finish our job. The nice lady clerk on the floor was very helpful, & friendly. I must say, this place kinda reminds me of a City Mill, where the staff is also very helpful whenever you need to ask questions about a project. As soon as you walk in the store you get the feeling like they're staring at you as if you're going to steal something. A lot of workers looks like all family through generations just standing around and don't know shit about their products. Finally found what I needed all the way in the back no help bundling it up Worker gave me a receipt told me to take it to the front I figured he would follow me with my product no help at all went upfront to pay for it had to walk all the way back of the store and retrieve my product. I needed parts to fix a toilet. The young kid who helped me clearly didn't know much about plumbing, but he tried. He even double checked with a seasoned veteran who was busy fixing something to make sure he was finding the right parts for me. I live in town and was in Kaneohe over the weekend visiting family. Needed to pick up some ant bait and my father suggested we check out Yamashiro's since it was across the street. So happy we did! As soon as we entered the store, everyone at the cashier greeted us and asked how they could help. I told them what we were looking for and they guided us to the correct aisle. While debating which one to get, another staff member came by and asked if we needed help. We told him we didn't. He said no problem. But if we did, to just ask and he would be happy to help. We decided to wander around the store to see what else they had. And discovered they have a little bit of everything! Which is fantastic if you ask me. Anything from a door, sink, door stops, cleaning supplies, 1" screws (the big box stores have been low on stock), shelving, rain boots, etc. We could wander in there for hours! Funny....I thought I was the only one who has been dissed by the "grouchy" cashier who never smiles but is quick to complain. She should be fired. She is really the reason I will only frequent that miserable store only in an emergency. Also there is nobody offering help of any kind. Not even offering to carry a 40 pound bag of leaking mulch to my car was the topper. The store is filthy on top of grouchy, unhelpful cashiers. There are other stores out there with caring salespeople......hey you cashiers need to remember the customer is important. I was convinced by a Yamashiro employee, to buy into the gas cylinder exchange program, saying non metal tanks are safer, dont rust, we just exchange the tank each time, and I can always get my deposit back. I exchanged tanks recently and the valve was defective. When I called to let them know I was told they discontinued the service, and there was nothing they would do for me. I spoke to the manager who said they lost money and Hawaii Gas is at fault. I didnt enter into a contract with Hawaii Gas, I did with Yamashiro's Their response was "sorry". Well thats not good enough, when you promise something, you should keep your promise. I am now stuck with a broken tank of gas I cannot use! Yamashiro's cannot be trusted.. No Aloha. Ace hardware in Kaneohe does NOT price match and most pricing is a 50% up charge compared to island big box stores (ie Lowes, Home Depot). No military discount. Recommend going elsewhere, not a good store, you will get significantly more for your money at other local establishments. Until today I liked this store but I don't think I will shop there much more due to the customer service I experienced. I am a homeowner and there is aleays things I need for the house and I like to spread the money out to support most stores. On Saturday I purchase a Craftsman chainsaw from Yamashiros. It broke within an hour. The saw simply died after cutting though 6 logs each about 8". It should of handled it but seized and started to smoke. I did the usual maintenance check and the blade was clear. I took it back today with receipt in hand and they didnt want to refund me, instead trying to direct me away to Sears. I asked them to call Sears as I wanted to be sure they would refund me. The lady ponned that task of to a floor guy who then started to chat up another customer and dropped the ball and then he ponned it off to another floor guy. Sears had him on hold. Then after about five minutes the lady at the till approached me and said "okay I talked to someone (the manager maybe??) and we are going to return your money this one time (with the tone if a cop letting me off with a warning) but we aren't going to sell you another one." And then she criticized me for opening the blade area checking the blade, which is basic maintenance for anyone who understands chainsaws. It felt like she was saying "you broke it." She did express concern regarding my safety, and I appreciate that. In general the staff were nice but the whole experience left me feeling like a brow beaten child rather than a valued customer. Rating would be zero because I'm caucasion and they're extremely racist. They've always had sketchy service and treated me poorly except for one girl. I've been a contractor for 40 years and I filled out the form for the general excise tax discount many years ago. Today they said they couldn't find it yet I showed them my three licenses. She laughed at me and said you need your general excise tax number. They should have had it, because they used to. Prices are high and they will never get my business again. My wife is local and had problems with them many times! They filled up her propane tank but not until they did their friends tanks first. She was waiting for 15 minutes and was their first. I had to go to this hardware store to buy a particular drill bit made to help install metal security doors, and this seemed to be the only store that had those type of bits in stock. The store has this mom and pop feel to it. Apparently this business has been a family business for many years. This was the first time I went to this store. I went in and greeted by the 2 women cashiers in front. One of them asked me if I needed help finding something and I mentioned to her that I am looking for a particular drill bit. She called someone to assist me. The employee came and I showed him a picture of what I was to get alone with the product number. There were several different sized, but I wasn't sure which one it was, so we took the size 14 of the drill bit. Later took it to my boyfriend and he noticed it was the wrong size. The next day I went back and since product wasn't open it was easy to get a credit back for purchase. I then asked for help on the drill bits and ended up getting 2 different sizes and was told, if one of the two doesn't fit, then just save the receipt, make sure to open up the the original packaging nicely so that it's not ripped or anything so I can return the bit. The people here at this store was very pleasant to deal with, there was ample parking, and I will definitely go back for more supplies if needed. read more

I never stopped to think it was a hardware store. Truly my loss, as they carry an incredible variety of my shopping weakness: Makita tools. In fact, it was the Makita rep who brought me to this store. After I clashed with the folks at Woodcraft of Honolulu in Kalihi over whether, as an Authorized Service Center, they would repair a warrantied Makita tool not purchased at their store, the Makita rep suggested I could try another repair center like Yamashiros. (Yeah, even the Makita Representative could not convince Woodcraft to honor the Makita warranty.) Anyhow, I'm glad I stopped in. My tool is awaiting repair, but meanwhile, I shopped. And boy did I shop. They have the biggest variety of Makita tools I've seen in Hawaii. The repair guy, Mike, went out of his way to explain the differences between each of the tools and offered his suggestions on which ones to buy first. I really liked this store & despite the difficulty of getting to these independently owned stores (i.e. Mom & Pop), this one does have something extra to offer. Tried to exchange something I got for Christmas and was given the hardest time from Patty, one of the owners. All I wanted to do was exchange my item for another size, not a refund...just a simple, even exchange for one size smaller. Patty would not let my daughter exchange it for me, because we did not have the receipt and that is their store policy, I totally understand that. Patty then went and looked up the purchase and printed my daughter a copy of the original receipt, though Patty would still not let the exchange take place. She told my daughter and myself after speaking with me on the phone that she physically needed our charge card to make the exchange??? I questioned her on why we needed to physically show the credit card and in her words she said "She needed the charge card to make that thingy on the card" I asked her what "thingy" would she be doing on our card? it would just be an even exchange??? Not a refund, but an even exchange???? Patty then told me "how I was so lucky she did us a favor by printing a copy of the receipt" my reply to Patty was "that was not a favor, but something we call "Customer Service"!!! I was again told that I would need to bring down the credit card. Hmmmmm Guess what??? I jumped in my car, took my boots and credit card to Yamashiro's, found my correct size, took both pairs of boots to the cashier and made a simple item exchange...was never asked to see my credit card...no "thingy" was ever done. Just a simple item Exchange!!! Auwe!!! Too bad, because I really did like this store, You pretty much can always find what you're looking for. Just be careful when you need to return something or simply don't deal with Patty. That is all! read more
