I'm very disappointed in my experience with Harkey Tile and Stone. I went to them for my bathroom remodel, worked with Terri Wheeler on design and tile choices. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until she recommended a tile installer. When we were working on measurements, Terri stated that they don't sell tiles "by the tile" they come in square feet. Technically this is correct but when trying to figure out the square feet needed for each tile, Terri kept saying that they are not responsible for measurements and the installer is responsible. Well, Terri had the measurements and did the math but when it came down to doing the deal she wanted to release her liability and I ended up ordering more tile than I probably should. Because the installer broke my tiles I had to reorder and guess what- The person at Harkey taking the order never asked how many square feet I needed. My 24 x 48 tiles came in a box of 2 and my 12x24 floor tile came in a box of 6 tiles. Getting Terri to call me back was a process, there was ALWAYS an excuse and on one call she even divulged personal information about someone at Harkey that was none of my business. I'm not sure if she felt this would soften my bad experience but it only made me question her even more. After having a very challenging and bad experience with the installer that Harkey recommended, I reached out Drew Messenger, manager, to try and get my problem resolved. At this point I was already 2.5 months into a very small and simple bathroom remodel. Drew said he would assist in getting it resolved. Well, he did to a certain point. After back-and-forth with Harkey and the tile installer I ended up having to threaten litigation to the tile installer to get my bathroom completed. I was left with a USED vanity that was improperly installed, etched marble floor, grout haze on tiles, damaged drain cover and personal items that were used and or taken from my home. During this whole process, I was also getting a quote from Harkey on installing my kitchen countertops. Terri forwarded me an email with my updated quote that was $665 over my original quote with a note in the email from Drew to "increase each at $200 each". When I asked Drew why he emailed Terri with the increase his response was "Since you retained a lawyer for your issues regarding your tile installation and threatened to use them leads us to believe you'll be happier with a different fabricator and to consider my quote null and void." Drew is right! After my experience with Terri Wheeler and Drew Messenger at Harkey Tile and Stone, I do not want to work with them on any other project and I would advise you to consider what I wrote. Definitely do not rely on them for install recommendations! Know your measurements and don't let them tell you that they don't know how many tiles come in an order because they do. The tile I purchased was "their most popular tile" so to say you don't know how many tiles come in a box is an outright lie. In addition to the lack of customer service, their prices are higher than others that I have found in the area--SAME product and better customer service. read more

From the second I walked in, Lexie was very helpful! She said down with me unscheduled for 1.5 hours to discuss what I wanted, gave me a tour and let me see all the Stone in the warehouse!! Then she helped take down my information and scheduled me to meet with someone. Very helpful! Yes it's a little pricey, but if you want it done right it's worth it. You can see from the moment you walk in, this is a family owned and why they've been in business for 80 years. The personal attention from one of the owners, Jeff, was impeccable. He spent almost 2 hrs with us. He was able to make suggestions from the broad selection of products within our budget that we didn't think possible. When I first went to Harkey Tile & Stone to get them to install granite in my kitchen, they were so nice and helpful. I had them to install some granite in my kitchen 3 years ago. After the granite settled on the counter top, it dropped down Just a little. (Which is completely normal for that to happen) I called Harkey Tile & Stone and ask them If anything could be done about that to fix it level again..I was talking with the manager and he said, "Yes, we can fix that with no problem". He told me he would send someone to my home in 3 days. Honestly, after they came and fixed the seam in the granite, the granite was completely level and very smooth on top of the counter again. I was so so pleased with their work. I called the manager the next day to ask him how much I owed them and he said, " You don't owe us anything". I was shocked! He was so nice about it. I had also purchased some tile for my bathroom floor from them. Never have I had anyone to take over and help me pick and matching colors the way they did. I bought tile floors for our laundry room. Carol helped me and was wonderful. She even caught a mistake my contractor's assistant made and was on top of everything. Will definitely use again when we remodel our bathrooms. read more

First meeting was in Jan. Spent an hour picking out floor tile, backsp and counters. We realized that Holly had lost our info (WE followed up). She didn't have the order, needed to be reminded. We reiterated we needed samples. When the samples came, she only ordered 2/3. Samples of the backsp did not match what we thought we ordered. I took a photo of it when onsite, and sent to her to prove it. She asked the manuf. to send her pics. We looked at the pics and picked new tiles from those. Holly got sick (which I do not fault her) and it seemed like she only communicated at 4:45 on Friday to ask a critical question (they close at 5), and then we'd not hear back. Were convinced she only worked Friday from 4-5. Understood you are limited when ill. When ill, people should source a backup to take care of their customers and fill the min amount of duties to keep going. Most people when coming back from being sick and have a backlog will put in extra time to catch up, because it's right. Harkey will let work get several weeks behind without follow up, not their problem. I continued to check in, and magically she realized that the warehouse did not have the full qty we ordered of this 2nd tile. At that point, we declined to do that part of the backsp due to the hassle. We switched to a similar version at the Tile Shop. They had the product in 2 days. The floor tile was next. When the order came in, it was 2 boxes short. Installers realized it. Not certain if this was because the contractor miss measured. Once again, our problem as we had installers ready to finish the floor. Ended up having to take off work and run around to find a distributor that had it. I'm not even sure if Harkey was aware, we took it out of their hands because it wouldn't get dealt with due to responsiveness. Side note - when we picked up the floor tile, they told us to come back the next day to get the pencil tile (a diff part of backsplash). I took off lunch to go to Harkey to get that tile, but when I got there they had to ask Holly about this (who was not on the phone), and she at no point got up from her desk. She sent someone to tell me to come back, tile wasn't in. At that point we also cancelled the pencil and switched it to the Tile Shop. Now countertops. The originals came in, and to their credit (fabrication), they noted swirling in the stone. They asked me to come down and take a peek, and I saw that it looked bad. We used that trip to pick out new ones. Ordered that afternoon. They called and wanted to discuss the cuts. The stone they sold us the 2nd time was not available in the correct size. They sold a quartzite stone that comes in a size under 63" (rare) and we needed 63" to have barstools under it. They called to confirm it was OK to cut off 3" of the island. This would then make the island not barstool depth. I told them I needed to discuss with my husband, and we want the island look strange when we had planned for seating, we decided to go elsewhere to find stone. 3rd time is the charm - went to AGM. The last thing that Harkey was responsible for is still in progress. We ordered painted tiles (also a part of the original backsp and the only thing not moved over to the Tile Shop). Contractor picks them up. Harkey says they checked them. We checked the first box and confirmed. The 2nd box was opened by the installer, and confirmed 2 were chipped. The 2nd box appeared to be in original shipping, unchecked. These tiles run $80 each. They are made on demand, hence they have no stock (not explained earlier). Instead of re-ordering to moving, they went back and forth with the manuf. to prove the damage. Sorry, but that's your supplier. You can take the damage up with the manuf., especially when you did not check the box. This cost us 4 days of getting this resolved and new tiles shipped, and when it was agreed to that the manuf would ship new, it would be 10 days min. There is a good chance of one of those getting broken again. They say now that they won't stand behind the tile if we cut a hole for a pot filler so if they don't stand behind tiles that ship or cut well? Before all this happened we referred a few people to Harkey and they have decided to do business elsewhere with similar stories. MGMT: If you are not into selling tile or being educ on the process/products, then I would stick to fabrication where you have a good rep. Don't sell tile if you hire people that are incompetent. When you go home to your clean house, your customers are living in dust waiting for you to follow up on mistakes. Others go the extra mile, especially when they are causing mistakes. With fabrication we had no issues once we finally got a stone. Harkey was flexible in dates for install, but I don't think I'd use them again. We've spent money with them on other projects, but we've also met a lot of great resources in the Charlotte area on this project that want the business more. read more

I cant stress enough how pleased I am with everyone that works with customer interface at this fabricator. They all work together to help each others customers. I had a layout meeting this week and they know there stuff and listen to their customers. read more
