Just ate here today.......usually our go to place for last 15 years.... I got the Osider roll which used to make me full on its own. Tonight and last months visit, roll was undersized w virtually no topping (steak) and a small sprinkle of onions. It was mostly cheap imitation crab and drowning in cheap chili sauce. I honestly wouldn't pay over $10 for the roll anywhere. I added a salmon roll to the order which all 8 pieces were cut different sizes and half missing salmon and avocado- only rice present. I was really unsure about this place at first because it wasn't the traditional sushi place that I thought it was, but the food was really good. The sushi rolls are really Americanized but they are quite delicious and the quality of fish is high, and it was fresh. I was pleasantly surprised. The service here was also really good, the server was attentive without being too over bearing. We were allowed to enjoy our food and still ensured that we had everything we needed for our meal. The ambiance is a bit loud here, it is busy and the music is played at a high volume. It didn't bother me. The decorations were a little weird for my taste, maybe some kind of urban Japanese feel? The rolls were a little heavy on the rice, but the flavors were great. Our favorite roll was the Ana Roll, it had a little bit of a smoky flavor and was very tasty. The Harney Penos are definitely a must order. They are jalapeño poppers with a Japanese twist, and they were SO good. The rest of our sushi was just okay, although I would probably try different rolls next time. The drinks we got were pretty good too, nothing crazy though. Went once on a (not very busy) Friday for dinner. Appetizer took way too long to get to our table. Drinks were not refilled. Saw 2 huge cockroaches crawling across the restaurant. The middle of the floor. One made it to our table, went underneath, while a hostess watched and just said "I'm sorry". During the time waiting for our food leading up to this I noticed its dimly lit and rather unkept all over. This has been mentioned in other reviews I've seen. I do believe this is a clear depiction of the attitude of the whole place and imagine the kitchen and how they are preparing the food would be unacceptable as well. The speciality sushi rolls are a bit unorthodox and expensive; you have to ask for a separate "classic role" menu if you just want what you would normally expect at a reasonable price. My husband pointed out that the rainbow roll says it comes with "5 types of fish" so unless they are countering avocado or imitation crab as a fish, it's really just 4. The Ocean Water drink was really pleasant and refreshing though, and I enjoyed the espresso Martini as a unique drink to try once. We waited a long time to get our 2 rolls, and our server spent a lot of time sitting at the bar socializing with someone she knew which seemed unprofessional even for a lounge. HOWEVER, with all of that said, the dessert is worth it. If you are staying in O'Side and plan to come here at all, just spend $10 and get one of the desserts. Ultimately, disappointing. We moved to Oceanside this year and have gone to Harney multiple times to get my wife her sushi fix. We won't be returning, unfortunately. We came in and were promptly seated (fantastic service by the hostess). From there, it went downhill. We asked for the menus; our waitress then came by maybe a minute later and we ordered a drink and app. We then didn't see our waitress again until the end of the meal (we ended up needing to order from the person that brought our app). My wife ordered the chef's special (9 piece Nigiri) and I ordered the the terriyaki steak bento box (wanted to try something new tonight). About 20 minutes later my wife's Nigiri came out, but not my bento box. Not to worry, steak takes longer to cook. My wife then ate her entree, her entire entree, while I sat there waiting for my entree. It didn't come. The waitress then reappears, asking if we want to order anything else before she gives us the check. We say no, I ordered an entree that never came, but they should just take it off the check and we'll be on our way. The waitress looks shocked and comes back a few minutes later, with my bento box, complete with stone-cold steak. I am surprised that they'd try to serve this to me and send it back, asking for them to take it off the check. The manager then comes out and says they will box the food up and give it to me half-off. And this is where they lost me. Why would I want to pay for cold food at a restaurant where my bill will already be over $100 with the tip. I ask them once again to just the item off the check, which they do, I pay, tip; and leave. They tried to apologize and say the kitchen was slammed, but the place was maybe half full and that would explain the steak coming out late, not cold. The service overall was disjointed and nobody checked in on us to check on the quality of the food (which would have been a perfect way for us to be able to ask about my bento box during the meal). It felt like our waitress was actively avoiding looking in our direction the entire meal. Both weird and disappointing when you are planning on dropping over $100 on a meal. Not the end of the world, but a good indicator that this place is not for us. There are plenty of similarly priced sushi spots in the area with better service, better ambiance, and, honestly, better food. read more

Took my family here when they came to visit me. It was a really nice place with friendly staff and wonderful decor. For an appetizer, we got the spicy garlic manchego edamame which was tasty, but honestly nothing special. For dinner, we split four rolls: crunch roll, mellow yellow, diablo and lightning. They were all pretty tasty, but the mellow yellow was the least favorite. I really like eel and when I mentioned that to our server, she said they don't serve eel, but the black cod tastes very similar hence why we got the lightning roll. Spoiler: the black cod tasted nothing like eel, but it was still an overall good roll. The two favorites of the night were the diablo and crunch rolls! The flavors were perfectly balanced and I would definitely get them again. The drinks (BlackBerry Mojito and Lemondrop) were not strong at all and was definitely a waste of money to get as they weren't that tasty either. As much as I enjoyed the food, the price is pretty high per roll. The sushi wasn't amazing enough to make it worth it for me to go back anytime soon. They have many fancy rolls but they also have traditional rolls, but you have to request the separate menu. The spicy salmon was on the spicier side but the tuna was fresh. The salmon roll was just okay. Not bad but not great either. Our only complaint was the ratio of rice used on the more traditional rolls. There was a ton of rice & my partners traditional rolls were the same size of my crunch roll which had way more filling. I think they spend a lot of focus on their specialty rolls & the more traditional rolls fall kind of flat. The service was great and the food came out very quickly; no complaints there. read more

I haven't been here in a while because it's a splurge for dinner, but made an exception for Valentine's Day. I made the smart choice of reserving a table and the restaurant was crowded but not too much so. The hostess was very sweet to give me a rose as she showed us to our table! There was a saxophone player, which I thoroughly enjoyed although the overall noise level in the restaurant made it hard to have a conversation. Our server seemed a bit distracted but I cut him some slack due to the "holiday" craziness. Honestly this is going to be my new go too sushi spot! The fact that every night they have a different $5 martini is literally amazing! Their sushi is also extremely good. Super light, the rice is cooked well and I also love the nigiri they had basic nigiri but me and my friend got salmon with lemon and avocado the music was amazing and they have a restaurant with a speakeasy on the side. The restaurant was packed so instead of waiting we went to the back. Me personally, I love a good speakeasy. The bartenders were friendly and it's located right in downtown Oceanside very close the parking structure so you don't even have to worry about parking. They also have live music as well.
