If I could give 10 stars, I would!!! Blue Ocean is easily our favorite restaurant, and my boyfriend and I make the drive to Carlsbad every single month just to eat here. It's become our favorite date night spot, and after all this time, we've never had a bad experience. Our absolute favorite appetizer is the pork belly skewers. They are seriously unreal--they legit melt in your mouth and are packed with so much flavor. We also love the pork belly bao buns, which are just as delicious. The Brussels sprouts are another must-order. They're hands down the best Brussels sprouts we've ever had, and we can't come here without getting them. We also always order the spicy garlic edamame. The sauce is so good that we actually dip our sushi rolls in the leftover edamame sauce, and it's honestly a game changer. (The pricing is also unbeatable for how good the food is). Every sushi roll we've tried has been incredibly fresh and beautifully made. We always end up ordering way more food than we planned because everything is just that good. For drinks, the Cracked Summer is our go-to cocktail every single visit. It's refreshing, delicious, and pairs perfectly with the food. The atmosphere is perfect for a date night, the staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the quality is consistently amazing every time we visit. Blue Ocean has become more than just a restaurant to us--it's one of our favorite monthly traditions. If you're anywhere near Carlsbad, do yourself a favor and eat here. Boy does this place pack in a crowd! It was just two of us on Wednesday early evening, but we were seated immediately; no wait time at all. That was a big plus for us because we were hungry. We were seated at the main dining area but when we requested for a table so we could sit side by side versus across from each other (the room was sooo loud that we couldn't hear each other) the waiter (darned we didn't catch his name) acknowledged and rearranged a table nearby so that we could sit beside each other. Another plus! The place was busy busy and sooo noisy. We were fine with the wait to take our order (about 15 minutes), which gave us enough time to peruse the menu. We ordered the Omasake box with side of sushi rice, Salmon Teriyaki entree with xtra veggies and no rice, a side of Kale salad, and Passion Fruit Cheesecake for dessert. No menu drinks; just water, which came aplenty, as our glasses were never empty while we continually guzzled down our h20 (this summer has been such an excruciatingly hot one) - another plus for this continued h20 service! Now for our order: The Box came immediately, and without hesitation my companion dove in with chopsticks already waiting in hand. I picked on his meal, while waiting for mine. The Salmon entree came about ten minutes later, while I salivatingly and happily endulged myself with its delicious flavor. The Kale salad came quite late (almost like an after thought) as we were almost done with our main orders. The salad had an odor that wasn't quite pleasant - as probably most extremely green veggies do smell when grilled. I liked the taste; my companion did not, as he stated it tasted too bitter. I requested a side of ponzu sauce to tame down the bitterness, and I also ended up tossing some shredded white garnished radish noodles (left over from my companion's box meal) to mix in with the kale salad...hmmm, tasted better, but we eventually requested to have our salad to go. My companion was still hungry after his boxed meal; I was not, but we both agreed not to order anything more, a we awaited the dessert. The cheesecake dessert was the best part of our meal here, as the taste really pleased our still hungry palette. And yet another plus! All in all, the meal was pleasant. A little pricey (over $100) - thank goodness we skipped the drinks, less regular h20. Would we return? Sure. Service was great, and food was pretty good. The charge on our credit card had an additional $61. The bartender who waited on us must think he's amazing to give himself a total tip of $76.40 I will be disputing this. We have always loved the food here--it is consistently delicious and keeps us coming back. However, over our past few visits, the service in the bar area has unfortunately fallen short. On multiple occasions, it took ten minutes just to be greeted or asked for a drink order. Furthermore, once we received our drinks, staff never checked back to see if we wanted another round, making the experience feel unwelcoming and unappreciative of our business. My husband and I came here on a Saturday evening for dinner for sushi. We didn't have reservations and managed to get seating for the both of us inside. We ordered the new Golden Tide Roll, Madison, and Marine Boy. The rolls came out in a reasonable amount of time. The rolls were all flavorful and delicious. The inside was surprisingly loud. It definitely has a classy vibe but is not super formal. We ordered the blistered shishito peppers to start. They were delicious and spicy. I wish it were a tad saltier but I found them to be delicious and the portion was slightly larger than I expected which is great. We got the hot night and Madison roll. The fish was tasted fresh and the flavors of the rolls were delicious. The rice was also a good texture - not mushy but not hard. The hot night roll was refreshing and flavorful. I did notice that not every single roll had the outside piece of fish on top on it but it was still good I just wish every piece were more consistent/had all of the fish. The Madison roll was creamy and umami. I love when sushi places have real crab because I don't really like imitation crab. We headed over to Blue Ocean to enjoy some sushi on our last night in Carlsbad. Before heading over we noticed they did not take reservations so we expected to have some kind of wait. We got to the host stand who shared we would have a 30 min wait and we would get a text when our table was ready. We waited more than 30 mins and saw that everyone who came after us got sat immediately we weren't sure if there was a mix up or maybe we were forgotten. On the app it reported there was no one in front of us in line, regardless we eventually got a text and were sat but no explanation was given. I would give this spot 5 stars if it was not for the weird wait situation. The food was delicious, the presentation was amazing and our server Anthony was super friendly and attentive. We love Blue Ocean!!! My family and I come here whenever my husband and I come to visit my parents (which is often) and none of us have ever had a bad bite here. The fish is amazing - we always get the Omasake box as a staple and usually get different rolls alongside just to try them. Their fresh wasabi is so good with all the sashimi included in the box - highly recommend! The ambiance is beautiful - all the decorations are seamless and very well done. They have a full dining area, an enclosed patio, and a bar that usually has a game on, all of which are great! It's impressive that they have a bar with a game playing, while keeping the sit down area of the restaurant still feeling upscale. Nathalie was our server last night and she was so sweet and kind! Really easy to walk in to find a table on a week night, which is when we typically go. During our last visit, we were seated right away. We put in our orders quickly and our drinks arrived and so did our edamame but our other app did not arrive. We started out with an old fashioned and a lycheetini. I absolutely loved my lycheetini, but I love almost any lychee cocktail. The edamame had a great garlicky flavor with every bite. Our rolls came out shortly after and once we dug in our grilled hamachi app finally came. For specialty rolls we ordered the caterpillar, marine boy, and summer roll. Our absolute favorite was the summer roll as it was refreshing in each bite. Now we loved the marine boy but for different reasons. My husband loves spicy tuna so the inside of the roll was his favorite part while salmon is my favorite fish. The salmon on the top of this roll was perfect. Melted in your mouth like butter so you know the salmon is fresh. The caterpillar was a great roll too but was outshone by the other two. We did finish the grilled hamachi last but it did have a lot of small bones making it a bit difficult to eat. Still was delicious though. We ended our night with tempura ice cream. We were disappointed that the ice cream was not fully fried in tempura but just had tempura flakes on it. It was still good overall. Will service was not fast or really attentive during this visit, our server was still kind. We did have to ask for the check a few times but we did have a nice dinner overall. read more

I was invited here by my daughter and son-in-law as it was his favorite sushi spot in Carlsbad. He came on his birthday just a few weeks before and was very impressed he mentioned. The moment we parked outside and I noticed the modern decor, it seemed like a chic place. Don't think I hadn't looked at the reviews and the menu items prior to my visit.. Robata is the table side grilling I believe, and did happen to notice a few tables doing this. We came for the sushi and weren't going to be swayed away from this. So we all started with the miso soups and shared some spicy edamame and fried calamari. So far so good, and then I tasted his jalapeño yellowtail roll and suddenly wanted the yellow hamachi style raw plate in the ponzu sauce that I viewed on the menu. Practically life-changing umami flavor with each savory bite.. I was definitely wowed! The wife got her typical shrimp crunchy roll and daughter got the Padre roll which I helped her finish and was very impressed with the soft shell crab taste and the roll itself- this was a future must order. Mmm. Minimal talking and maximum mouth stuffing. We finished with green tea and mango mochi type ice cream sandwiches that I've never seen but were pretty tasty. Delicious vegetarian sushi!! It's been hard to find good vegetarian specialty rolls in San Diego without going to explicitly vegan restaurants, so I was happy to stumble upon Blue Ocean which had great option for me and my meat-eating friends. I've been here twice and have gotten the Crunch Vegetable roll both times because it's that good! It's very creamy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, with some tanginess from the beet. This restaurant is pumping on weekends and a prized local sushi restaurant. The warm amber hued interior offers a hint of elegance rarely achieved at sushi restaurnats. I particularly love the lighting with overhead bubbles floating and glistening. Beautiful brick features and upgraded comfortable seating give Blue Ocean a high end feel which is carried through the restaurant making this a great date spot. The robata is a nore unique offering that is not available at all sushi restaurants and I appreciate that they dabble in bau buns as well. My family and I (wife and two young kids who are 1 and 3) really love Blue Ocean. The food is amazing. It's some of the best quality sushi I can find since my favorite sushi place in San Clemente loaded during Covid, and I'll take it. We've tried a good variety of the menu at this point, and nothing has disappointed. We've also had a few cocktails, and I wouldn't say they are spectacular but also not disappointing. The one thing I'll note, is that a few times our service was a little lacking. Not being checked on throughout dining, having to flag someone down to order something else or request refills or a fork and then waiting for a long time for said items, or just general not very friendly. Each of the sushi rolls were good size rolls (not too small or too big in my opinion), and each roll is presented in a unique way! Even some of the other dishes like the Chicken Teriyaki, Edamame, Brussel Sprouts, and Vegetable Potstickers were really tasty -- so you have quite a nice variety to choose from. But definitely keep in mind that this place does not do all-you-can-eat so you might need multiple trips here to try it all (we will definitely be back)! We went on a Friday evening around 5 or so as a group of 6 and it was pretty busy inside. As such, our server was not around our table very often to ask for refills or order more food, which is a little bit of a bummer, but luckily there were plenty of food runners that brought the food out as it was ready! Either way, our server was very kind and was great with answering any questions we had and even pointed us towards some of the more popular dishes on the menu. As for the inside, there seems to be a good amount of space for several parties, and even larger parties as well. It has a cute little bar on one side, tables for different size parties, a sushi bar (which you can sit at), and even a table-top fireplace inside (which I didn't explore much because it was busy, but it looked really cool)! This establishment does not take reservations sadly so we waited for about 30-35 minutes before getting seated. The decor inside is nicely done, and they offer std, high top and bar seating. The appetizers and their sushi was excellent. Everything we ordered was delicious and the sushi was so fresh. What I liked most is that the sushi did not have a lot of rice, less carb, less filling and you could really taste all the flavors. My only complaint was the noise. It was crowded, music was loud and we all had to raise our voices just to hear each other. They really need to lower the music so guest don't feel they have to talk over it, and add sound absorption on the floor/walls/ceiling.
